Review Highlights
I guess I thought this place may be a little better than the other one in Alpharetta, but no it's not. Service is awesome and the food came out very fast.
FOOD: I'm not keen on their chips and salsa. Their chips are thick and a little stale, and the salsa is spicy. I usually get their Pescado, which are fried fish tacos with poblano slaw, chipotle aioli, and tomatillo salsa (the green one). I ask for the aioli and salsa on the side since it makes it very spicy. I'm not a fan of their tortillas either. I guess I go for their drinks - margaritas and sangrias are good.
People don't really come here expecting authentic or cheap mexican food, do they? Judging from the other reviews, I guess some were. After driving by the past few weeks and seeing large crowds of hipsters and wannabes, I came expecting a scene and a good alcoholic beverage. And I got it...pretty decent mojito. Food actually is not that expensive, at under $10 an entree. Actually, compared to all the crappy mexican food in Atlanta, it's not too too bad. I couldn't stop eating the chips & salsa. Just adjust your expectations before you go.
This place is nightclub-kind-of-loud...if you want a quiet soothing dinner, go to Sotto Sotto or Zaya. I actually like the fact that it's got a bit of a crowd...too many places in Atlanta are empty and tomblike. Hip industrial garage-y kind of feel and decor.
Pure Crap.
The only "taqueria" where I've had to valet park. Not very "authentico". The meal was overpriced and the tortilla chips were stale. Even the rice and beans were messed up - the rice was undercooked and the beans were bland. Our waiter was twitchy and kinda "cracky". Total waste of time and money.
For good tacos, just go to Taqueria del Sol.
My wife and I headed to Pure on a Friday night with my best friend and his wifey. I had Yelped and noticed mixed reviews so i was interested to see what the consensus would be from the 4 of us. And i was out-voted on my sushi suggestion.
I'm still totally shocked how hype this stretch of Inman Park has gotten, and i was equally surprised that the Grape didn't cut it on this busy intersection. Pure, at least in the short term, clearly has no problem filling their seats. At 8:00 we were told it would be 45 mins to seat the 4 of us, but i don't think we waited any longer than 20. They must have known that I'm important. Surely.
The space was completely renovated and has that popular converted gas-station aesthetic similar to U-Joint or Standard (exposed girders, garage doors, etc). There's a large bar that separates the two sides of the main seating space, with the outdoor patio still intact. I really do like the look, but it makes for noisy spaces. Management, if you're reading, consider some inconspicuous noise panels. Anything.
One of the first things i noticed once we were seated were the reasonable prices on the...tequila menu. Yah, not what you were probably expecting at the end of that sentence, but seriously these prices are beyond fair. Ole!
The dinner menu had a great mix of options (menu is online) but it became quickly clear that the vegetarian options haven't been fully thought out. Silly vegetarians. She ordered the fajitas, no meat. The rest of us ordered meaty fare, including my tasty cuban sammy, An Americano burrito, and the Chicken Fajitas (See pics). We all squeezed as much of it down our necks as possible since we had just hoovered a half gallon of guac and chips. I think i slipped into a food coma at some point later that night.
All-in-all i think Pure has the chops to stick around. It's nothing fancy and you probably won't find something here that you can't find 'better' somewhere else in the city. But it's a pretty cool place, with cheap tequila and good food in a cool neighborhood. And don't get me wrong - this ain't yo typical heat-lampery.
Pure has only been opened for a short time. It'll get even better with time, I'm sure of it, and it's going to be jumpin come next summer when those garage doors go up ;)
Doesn't "taqueria" mean taco shack? I thought taquerias were supposed to be cheap, filling, and vaguely threatening. Oh, well. The new Pure Taqueria does its best to slip stylishly into the growing phalanx of chic Inman Park eateries. And it does, even if it fails to conjure dusty cantinas along the ocean...
Well-designed, brightly lit, with an energetic bar and tightly knit mass of two and four tops, Pure fits the intown description. The mango margaritas are good--frozen or rocky. The tilapia tacos were tasty--three per plate plus the requisite R & B. And the tilapia entree, Pescado Veracruz, was actually delicious.
The service was a bit uninspired--weak smiles and general lack of enthusiasm. If you tip 15% do they get the message or just think you're cheap? Anyway, all-in-all a good meal for two for $65 (two drinks each plus tip). Fits the optimistic, economy-be-damned intown attitude...
I've been waiting for this place to open for awhile now and was excited when my friend decided to have her birthday dinner there so we could try it out! Entrees averaged about $10 and a single marg was about $6, so right in line with other places in the area.
I took a fellow yelper's suggestion and got the chicken tostada and it was definitely the fan favorite at my end of the table. My other friend got a quesadilla that came out fried, but she claimed she liked it. The only complaint I had was that for the taco platters, you have to order a plate of 3 of the same, not a la carte - so if you are looking for variety stick to El Taco down the way.
Really fun space and upbeat atmosphere - I'm sure we will be back for many happy hours to come!
I'd always heard good things about Pure, but sometimes the hype about Mexican joints is more than they deserve (I'm talking about you, Taqueria del Sol).
The new location of Pure is in Inman Park, near Zaya and Parish. They have indoor and outdoor areas, and a smallish parking lot in the back.
I had the Tostada de "Tinga," which had two tostadas topped with lettuce, guac, shredded chipotle chicken, sour cream, and crema. It was quite good, and my friend enjoyed his chicken taquitos.
The service was friendly and quick, so no complaints there.
Oh, and I had a random celebrity spotting there, as well: Tony Hale (Buster Bluth from Arrested Development).
Definitely a place I want to return to soon.
So much potential. Such a great location. But OMG, SO !@#$%^&* LOUD. Seriously, I registered zero enjoyment of my first (and last) meal at Pure, mostly due to the fact that I couldn't hear myself think, let alone carry on a conversation with my husband. The food was decent--crab fritters were too heavy on the spicy sauce, enchiladas were fine, and my quesadilla had fresh ingredients (even though I didn't like the corn tortillas)--but jeebus, I just can't handle a place where I have to scream my order to the server and then pray that it all comes out correct. Maybe I'm an old fart, but I don't want dinner to induce a migraine. The tequila is supposed to do that.
Came for the PRIVATE opening on a Thursday last week and had delicious Crab salad. Very refreshing and plentiful. Lotsa wine and drinks to pick from. Beautiful people. I like it A LOT A LOT!
On Sunday ate "brunch" here. No Bloody Marias but ate their Hangar Steak with taters. Really good and they thought of it the night before! then returned to try their Fish Salad which is delicately fried Tilapia tossed with lettuce, sliced radishes and a delicious combination dressing and vinaigrette, topped with crushed tortilla chips. I have yet to try a taco here but it is on the works. This is mt fourth visit and yay, I am a fan.
Drinks are really tasty and prickly pear seems to be the item to order here. Good wines, patio is still being put together . Mixed music between Troubadours and latin mixes....Two TVs at the bar. Nice space and retro decor. The bar has a beautiful open look to it. The staff is superb and the GM Bradley will treat you like family...now, go wash your hands and eat this up!
I went to Pure one week after it's private opening and the place was packed. It was lively and the hostesses and bar staff were attentive. Salsa was refreshed and new drinks appeared with no delay.
My issue was with the noise level. It was so loud I had trouble hearing my friend at the bar stool next to me and it just got worse once we sat down at our table. We were at the restaurant on a Tuesday night around 7:30 and the music was cranked up to late night Saturday levels. Totally ridiculous. When our party got tired of having to scream across the table at each other, and took a quiet moment, we were assaulted by loud cheesy pop/techno or the overly loud conversations of the diners around us.
Ok enough about the overly voluminous ambience. The tacos just aren't up to par. My friend had tried the fish tacos at the private opening and liked them but this time she ordered the chicken tacos and I ordered the carne asada tacos. It was just dry meat in a soft tortilla. No toppings. Just meat in a shell with a tiny bowl of sauce on the side. The winner at the table was the Torte Cubano sandwich. So freakin' delicious I stole half of my husband's.
To sum up, service was great, the noise level was off the charts unpleasant, the tacos were three times the prices of Taqueria del Sol and not as good. The menu does have plenty of variety to explore but I will have to pop a soothing throat lozenge before daring another dinner there.
I am going to go easy on Pure since they are newly opened and I would much rather have them versus the Grape in Inman Park. I have been long awaiting their opening and as their next door neighbor, we kept tabs on all of the progress and literally breathed the fumes that helped build the place. I have been twice since they opened and while I am a fan of their space--a little funky--and their cute staff, their food was average at best.
After all of the hype, their food was a bit bland and very greasy. We tried the queso fundido and the grease dripped out of the tortilla shell; the chicken soup was greasy as well. We tried a few of the tacos and they were rather bland. Calamari-average. Margaritas-average(too much sour mix). Fish tacos-average. Dessert-average. Too sweet and too much like a frozen dessert out of a box at the grocery store. I guess I can say that I am not too much a fan of the food...
The vibe is fun and a great place for drinks, but it is very loud in there, so if you want to have a conversation, go elsewhere. But if you want to go and get a buzz on, it is a perfect place for happy hour. And I suspect once the sun comes back out and it is Spring again, the place will be even more packed than it already is...
I have enjoyed the Pure Taqueria that is up in Alpharetta for quite some time when I go visit my dad. When I saw they were opening up a Pure in Inman Park I was pretty excited! This location is spot on to the location in Alpharetta and the food is delicious.
The vibe of the place is that of an old garage converted into a restaurant and it is pretty wide open spot. The tacos are my favorite thing on the menu (the carne asada is some of the most delicious I have had). When you order a side please get the refried beans, they are nice and spicy!! For drinks you can have shots of numerous types of tequila, try out some margaritas, mojitos or throw back a couple beers ($1.25 Black Label).
The service was a bit slow on the drinks but this is a new place with new young employees (wasn't that bad and I think it will improve).
Check out PURE!
Just waited an hour and didn't even get seated. Took our business elsewhere. We were always next on the list. Horrible. Incompetent.
Giving these guys four stars mostly for great service.....We got there on a busy Thursday put our names in the hat and were told approx. 25 mins. It turned out to be 10 mins. I hate it when they underestimate - time to table, Pure did not. Also, whilst waiting for our table we walked over to the crowded bar and were immediately given a menu and and asked for our drink order from an attentive bar tender. Food wasn't too bad nothing too spectacular either...the free chips and dip was great. Also they have a 1.25 can beer black label which is awesome for the money. Bottom line fun place. Just one big complaint too much noise - loud music, lots of people and no sound dampening material in largely concrete tile box. I could hear very little from the person sitting accross from me.
Very cute spot, let me tell you it is definitely a breath of fresh air compared to the over priced previous Grape restaurant.
Anyways... the decor is absolutely FAB and the drinks are really good. I had the classic Margarita and for $5.75 I got my money worth for sure! I did not eat the food because this occasion didn't call for it :), but the menu items looked great and I can't wait to go back.
I give it two thumbs up and I can't wait for the spring/summer to go back. Hmmmm maybe Pure will be my new hang out spot for next year Jeez don't judge me you gotta plan ahead for these things!
My advice if you want to eat here? Learn sign language.
My wife & I tried it on a recent Sunday evening (around 5:00) after friends in Alpharetta raved about the one in their 'hood. We were seated immediately, and it was obvious that it was still "kid hour" - several folks with wee ones, including some in strollers who were blocking the already-narrow aisles.
Service started OK and went rapidly downhill. Bar order was fairly prompt, and the chips were OK. Queso was passable, but nothing that sets new standards in cheese dip.
Our actual order - just a couple of tacos each - took *forever*. In fact, three tables that arrived after us had received their food and left before ours arrived. When it did, it was the same as the queso - OK, but TdS has nothing to worry about.
When my wife ordered a second margarita, the server (a curly-haired blond that looks like an aerobics instructor) made a point of upselling to a fancier tequila (like it matters once you add 'rita mix). After the food arrived, the server never checked back with us and completely disappeared until I flagged her down for the check (15 minutes after we finished eating).
The check arrives, and she's charged us for *5* margaritas. I had to get up from the table and find her at the wait station to get it fixed. She acted like it was no big deal - no apology, nothing.
So... food OK, service terrible, and noise level only slightly lower than the front row at a Stones concert. Not worth the 50 bucks and won't be going back.
The chicken tacos were dry roasted
Chicken on tortillas. It took them 55 minutes to get our to go order. ( They lost the ticket). We got home and it was all wrong. This place is bush league- they need to go to El Taco or Taqueria del Sol to learn how to make tacos. The owner wouldn't talk to us and the manager was short with us and kept asking us "what do you want me to do?" ( get our food, refund our order, for starters). Disappointing. I wanted it to be good because I live in the neighborhood. Maybe they'll get the kinks worked out soon. The world needs another crappy faux Mexican place like it needs another hole in its head. Better than having The Grape there, but I was kind of hoping for a place that actually served good food.
First off....i'm a new yelper, but don't hold that against me.
I've been waiting with great anticipation for PURE, IP to open. I work literally a stones throw away.
I was invited for the pre opening party but only had time for a margarita, which I thought was excellent.
The location looks fantastic and is very inviting and comfortable.
I finally had time to stop in for quick lunch today, and only had limited time and limited appetite. I was a little dismayed looking at the menu and seeing the prices for the lunch plates. All I wanted was a couple of quick tacos, with no sides. The server mentioned they would serve any of the tacos ala carte, so I ordered 2 tacos 1 beef short rib, and 1 carne asada.
The portion was decent size but the meat was completely flavorless unless a healthy portion of the salsa was placed on it. Also, the corn tortilla was too soggy to hold up, they should double them up.
My biggest complaint was when my bill arrived, I paid $8.80 for 2 tacos and a glass of tea. 2 tacos do not constitute a $9 ($10 with tip) lunch for me, especially since I was starving when I left.
Iced tea $1.75
short rib taco $2.90
steak taco $3.50
I guess I will continue to eat my tacos and mexican food on buford highway and go to Pure just for the drinks.
There are a lot of delicious taco joints in Atlanta. This is not one of them. We went with a decent size group and were split up. It was pretty busy on a weekend night and I was really hungry, so the bar was down. Not down enough. One of my friends was at a table that sat before us and he came over after his meal to warn us- it was every bit as terrible as he warned. Margaritas were delicious (I had an agave one, which I definitely recommend). Guac and cheese dip were OK. The service was friendly and good enough. But, who wants to valet to go to a restaurant with bad food when there are so many good spots in the area? Not me.
Went here with my girlfriends on a Wednesday night & this place was happenin'!!! The interior reminds me of Key West with the blue tile & disco ball, but there's somewhat of a retro feel as well. I guess that conflicts with the bumpin' contemporary music they blasted throughout the evening. Such a bustling atmosphere for a random weeknight!
Anyway, this seems like the place in Inman Park right now for happy hour. The drinks are strong & very reasonably priced. Chips come automatically, which is always a plus in my book. The queso was like most queso - always reminds me of Elmer's glue in consistency - but tasted just dandy & they even asked us if we wanted it with or without jalapenos. The service was on point for us the entire evening & everyone was so accommodating.
For the main course, I ordered the chicken fajitas, which I think was the standout of all our orders, if I do say so myself. Filled with zucchini, onions, peppers, & other veggies, they offer both flour & corn tortillas as well... love that! Not only was it enough to feed all of Somalia, it popped with flavor & literally came out sizzling. One girl ordered the soup, which was also mammoth in size, but that doesn't really appeal to me in a mexican restaurant. The tacos looked slightly over-garnished, but no one complained. One girl ordered the tilapia salad & I just may have to get on that next time... looked scrumptious! Finally, we topped off the evening with Key Lime Pie, which was like none other I've ever tasted. I'm not usually a fan, but this thing was money!!! More like a whipped Key Lime Cheesecake & had the best buttery graham cracker crust to boot. Lovesit.
All in all, we didn't rack up a ginormous bill, but left tipsy, fat & happy. If for nothing else, go for drinks & the Key Lime dessert thingy... You'll have no regrets!
Went here last night, and had a great time.
The decor is very nice, kudos to the ID! Only problem i had with the decor was that i arrived before the rest of my party so i sat up at the bar...some advise to those with junk in the trunk, DONT SIT AT THE BAR! the seats are small and the backs of the seats push you forward... it is hard to stay seated and the last thing you want to be reminded of before a mael is that you have a big ass! BUTT it might not have been just me bc i noticed the bar top kept moving and i think everyone seated at the bar was pushing down on it, trying to schhotch their rumps back to position. onto the food.... Went with a group, so i was able to sample some of theirs too... ended up trying Jaiba, Fish tacos, Shrimp tacos, Torta Cubana.... All good. The shrimp tacos were my favorite, big fried shrimp good slaw and mayo. The fish tacos were packed with fish, but a little bland (Taquria del sol is my fish taco control group and so far they are still #1) Portions are huge! The margs were eh... and a friend had the sangria, said muddeled fruit good, too much club soda bad. Chips and salsa average. It was a very loud place, pretty full and our table ended up playing a game of conversational telephone, poor robert at the end, was more or less dining alone. also, there was a light show and disco ball, note to management, this is not needed. cant wait till nice weather, when i can utilize the patio. Also, dogs allowed on the patio (always a plus) Service... strange, all the girls look the same??? my whole party noticed.
My final review: good taquria style food in a good atmosphere, just dont expect to have a conversation. Stick with beer, and share everything, the portions are huge and its a nice way to keep your tab low and your belly full.
I went there on a Tuesday and the place was hopping. I thought the food was only average but I'd definitely go back for drinks and apps. Great guac and ceviche app. Tacos were only ok and I tried 4 different types.
Pure Taqueria is a nice addition to the Inman Park neighborhood. It's a nice place to go with friends for good food and a few good drinks.
The wife and I have been driving past the build out for months waiting to try out the new neighborhood joint. Well, what a disappointment! The salsa tasted and looked Texas Pete, the mole chicken enchiladas were reminiscent of a cinnamon stick, the hanger steak was diced up and mixed with corn and we waited 50 minutes at 5:00 on a Sunday. I know it has only been a few weeks since the opening, but there are seriously WAY better Mexican options in the ATL.
Saturday night the 7th me and my partner went down the street to try the new Pure Taqueria in the old Grape location.
I rarely go anywhere on Saturday because of the crowds but avoiding parking by walking I'll give anything a try.
We choose to sit outside so we could eat after a long day. The host dropped the menus and sliver on the table with barley a how are you?
The service continued to be less than expected, even on a busy Saturday night. We had to go and get our own refills.
The music was too load. (Not sure why restaurants blast music. It just makes people talk over it.)
They also dimmed and brighten the lights about 5 times. It's not a fine dinning establishment. It was so dark outside other tables couldn't read the menu.
The appetizer was also 'ploped' on the table with no side dishes.
I have always given second chances and there will be a 2nd one for Pure. The plus is the food has good flavor and was plentiful.
Inman Park likes good customer service because we can go anywhere.
