I went here once. Once only.
We got there early I guess, we didn't know when they opened so we waited outside the door, and once we started seeing people come in, we followed. The door guy was extremely rude, told us to back up, and that they aren't open yet. So we stood out there for another 5 minutes and then the troll-of-a-man let us in.
We got in, and we stood by the desolate bar waiting for the 4 bartenders to serve us, as they were ALL talking to some random guy. With an "escuse me?" after about 3 to 5 minutes of waiting, the bartender put her finger up to us and said, "Just a sec", rudely.
Finally we got a drink and we sat down on the seats scoping out the scene. A couple of scared looking femme girls, I am assuming newbies as we were, were sitting down talking amongst themselves. I thought, alright this club so far is fine other than the rude "help", the aura of it is very much like Ybor, FL, where I grew up with clubbing, so I continued on with an open mind.
The place from that point on filled up with the people were rude and either ghetto or bro-dudes and that just isn't my cup of tea.
Good side, I think the music was decent, and that's hard to find sometimes.
Yelpers warn - NO don't go.
But the stubborn lesbian in me just had to experience it for myself. I was a fool not to listen this time.
This place is horrible. As soon as we were let in (doors don't open until 10:30 and it was 9 degrees out) I got a tacky vibe off the bat. The decor was horrendous. The bartenders are snails. Music was crap.
You just get that too-cool-for-school vibe when they don't even come close. Def not worth the price you pay for the cover and drinks. The Queer community shouldn't have to subject themselves to these standards for nightlife entertainment.
First and last Pure.
I'd like to start with the fact that I got my credit card STOLEN here. No joke. When we got there, they said there was no coat check that night, so I had no option but to keep my stuff with me. I set my purse down on one of the sofas for a second while I was dancing and when I checked back it was GONE. After searching frantically for about an hour (while the bartenders and staff were very unhelpful), my friend finally found it -near one of the bars. My wallet was still there (thank god!) but my credit card was missing from it. Whoever stole it then proceeded to charge drinks at Pure all night and then charged almost $2000 worth of other stuff before I could cancel the card. Lesson learned.
I've been to Pure a few other times for gay night. The music is good, and there are some cute girls, you can have a fun time with a bunch of friends and the dance floor is a good size. But the cover is expensive ($10), staff are pretty useless and I don't like the location, since it's not really accessible by anything except a cab and is near a bunch of sketchy straight clubs.
But I guess when it comes to lesbian nights, we take what we can get.
Also, if anyone finds that fucker that stole my card, tell her off for me. Thanks.
This review comes after an encyclopedia of miserable experiences at this place. I'm just gonna break it down into a few catergories, or I'll be typing all day...
PROLOGUE: The fact that this review sucks... sucks. Toast is closed, and there seems to be a confounded helter-skelter to discover the new "spot" (at least for us somerville queers)... okay, that being said...
STAFF: Absolutely dreadful. I'm not sure if I've EVER gotten a smile in this place. The bartenders take their sweet ass time getting around to you, and don't even greet you with a smile. More on the doorman later...
DRINKS: Wow.... way way way overpriced. It should never cost $50 for a couple shots and a couple drinks. EVER. This is addition to the $10 door charge.
MUSIC: I know my lady lovin' ladies love their hip hop... but the music at Pure should be outlawed.
BATHROOMS: Okay, this is my biggest beef with the place. On Fridays, BOTH the men's and women's room are reserved for "Lady's Only." I'm a dude... and i'm a dude who rolls about 10 lesbians deep... i'm gay... i'm friendly... and i will not sneak a peak at your twat... I promise...So, they grab me... physically grab me, and pull me out of the restroom on at least three occasions now. The designated WC for the XY is actually a nasty one-seater waaaaaaaaaay down a back hallway (which usually has a line about 10 men long)... so from now on, if the staff at Pure asks.... I'm transgendered. Really though, who are they to stand at the bathroom door and judge each person's gender... they obviously have NO CLUE who their clientel is.
THE DOOR: We showed up at 1:16 last night (this morning) and they stop letting people in at 1:15. The door man was rude, abrasive, and would not let us in. ONE MINUTE after the official closing time. We were dancing we had to pee so bad... but he wouldn't budge. He then suggested we go over to Shear Madness (which is a play... not a bar). This aspect alone would prevent me from ever returning to this establishment.
I've been to this club multiple times in the past, both as a regular customer and also as a guest listed VIP. All of my experiences there have been far from memorable - from the drinks, the staff and the actual place, I have yet to be impressed.
First the typical clubbing staff that is composed of former "guidos". They think that they are the shiznit because they get to pick who goes in and goes doesn't, Your a freaking doorman dude, face it.
Secondly their bar tenders. Their drinks, just as in most clubs, are expensive but I've tried multiple ones from screwdrivers to jacks and cokes. All have been mismeasured by the barkeep and that really ticked me off considering that I paid a premium price for them.
Then comes the music which is not my thing - mostly r&b...
The decor is pretty nice, very fresh and white but the place isn't very big and the seating area is very limited but nice if you manage to grab a seat. I've had the "privilege" of being a VIP multiple times which gave me access to seating but one time I wasn't and got kicked out even though the seating wasn't being used. I found that both ridiculous and rude from the staff to do that and gave them lip for it.
The crowd going there is very Asian actually and also very guetto. Not too many guidos here thanksfuly. I do not recommend this place and gave them two stars because I'm generous. I wish we could half-star places, in which case this place would get 1.5.
I went here a few weeks ago for one of their lesbian nights to catch a fleeting glimpse of Dani Campbell from "A Shot At Love". Well, I think it was this place... it could have been Wet at Pure, or Shine at Felt, or Toast at Tribe, or....
Wait, no yeah, it was definitely this one. The address matches up.
But that's the thing. No offense to the girls who frequent them, but these places all run together to me. All the girls here wear women's basketball jerseys and have wet curl hairdos, and I end up buying one beer that I discover costs about eight bucks once they hand it over to me.
This is why I never leave JP.
Not impressed with the place at all, I mean it's big at all, but the crowd just didn't do it for me.
We were on the guest list, we got there in line around 11:45, but they were not letting us in until like 12:02. So instead of paying $10 for guest list, we had to pay $20 (guest list is closed at 12am...scam)
Anyway, since I didn't pick the place, I am not sure if this is 18+ club or something. Everybody are just looks way to young to be getting freaking trashed and throwing up at the place. I saw at least 5 girls need to be carry out at the end of the night.
The music is decent, the drinks are okay, nothing special.
Very Asian, I mean Azn, crowd... It was a small club and not exactly luxe but it wasn't as ghetto as some other people have described. Then again, I'm not a true club kid so maybe I don't know any better. I wouldn't pay $20 to get into here, thas fo sho'.
I'd say it's more unremarkable than specifically disappointing in any way.
Actually, they show awesome, crazy kungfu Thai and Hong Kong movies which have no subtitles but are still fun to watch when the crowd is so unattractive.
The only ocassion I've enjoyed going to Pure was on a random gay night, and that was more a function of it being gay night (re lowers the sketch meter a notch in my mind). Despite it being gay night, for some reason I kept getting free drinks and so was fabulously forgetful by the end of the night.
Other than that, I do not like Pure AT ALL. The crowd seems kind of lame and you can be sure there'll be some college kids there. Also, it will be randomly cold in there - I nearly froze to death in there a couple of times. Unless you have some sort of Asian fetish, I don't see many reasons for going to Pure.
A part of the Roxy family of clubs, PURE is the new name of what used to be the Matrix. I went on Friday when it's 18+ because I'm not 21 yet. It was soooo packed and the crowd there varies from gangsta/ghetto to metro/hair gel/popped collers. The girls are pretty but the boys are not. Everyone's sweaty and it was hot like whoa towards 1230-1ish when the place got more cramped.
The bathrooms are clean and never crowded. The dancers are hot and energetic and while the dance floor is a little small, you can still have a good time. Go with the right people and the right blood alcohol level and you can definitely have yourself a good time.
One word: G-H-E-T-T-O!
This club was a lot of "firsts" for me. It was the first dance club I went to when I moved to Boston and it was also the first club I've EVER been to that patted down its customers (after collecting the cover charge) before allowing them to enter the dance floor. I don't know about the rest of the people, but I was incredibly offended and definitely freaked out by their security check. That area of Tremont isn't even bad...Seriously, wth?
Drinks were way overpriced but they weren't watered down, which surprised me. That fact isn't enough to give Pure another star though; I wouldn't even give it one if I had a choice.
Been there on Fri night, first of all, I didn't impress with the decor. And the drinks were very overpriced, same price with other places but much smaller cheapo plasic cup!!
On the other hand, the music was good and better than many places I went. There was a contest when I went there, Naughty School Girl Party, so yes, a lot of cute girls so that spiced up the night.
Be there by 11.30 coz after that the place will be packed and you will have to wait in the very long line.
crappy place. only place i know though for lezzies around here. just get wasted, roll in deep with girls and lower your standards. the hip hop music with mad girls around keeps me coming back.
One star for the experience, another for benefit of doubt. Beyond that I'll start this off by saying this. I'm a bartender. I'm in the industry so I know what to look for and I generally know when I'm being BSed.
I went there on Saturday night's "lesbian" night. After standing in a line that didn't move on a 10 degree night for about 45 minutes, we finally got in. $10 cover. Eh. Apparently the long wait was because some chick from "Win a chance at love with Tila Tequila" was there. Gag me.
So we check our coats and enter the club. It was busy, but not busy enough to warrant the wait. Not even close.
So I saddle up to the bar and wait for a bartender. And wait. And wait some more. We see a couple of friends around the other side so we head over there. My date goes and chats with them and I take a seat at the bar (this side had stools). and wait some more. Three bartenders in one bar and not a one even looked my way. Additionally, they all moved at a snails pace. I felt like giving them all a case of RedBull. As a bartender, I can't even fathom moving that slow.
Turns out apparently you have to stand in just the right spot to get a drink. Okay fine, I head to a different smaller bar, with a bartender who actually looks like she knows what she's doing and stand in what is apparently the right spot. and wait again.
Finally, after my date was abandoned by her friends, we decided we'd waited at this place enough and left. She had to work in the morning anyway.
What I can say for the place is that it was big, with a decent number of people there and decent decorum. But then, big clubs aren't really my thing.
This falls in line with all the other clubs located in this neighborhood - high on the concept, low on the clientele diversity, but always has the money to bring in a few great DJs and pull in the outsiders.
Former Matrix, RoxyPlex amped up the sound and decor...new white bars with purple and silver decor. Went by last night for their grand opening, but the music was SUPER commercial dance, and the DJ actually trainwrecked some mixes!! I was not impressed. The actual venue is a nice step up from Matrix and has great potential with its new look.
the only thing that i like about this club, is the vault downstairs near the bathrooms...this place was a bank before. too small for my taste. holds about 200-250 people. one bar and the wait is always long unless you are showing 20,50 or 100's bill/s
