If Vegan is this tasty, then moo-ve over this no meat thing doesn't seem so impossible.
I love the hole in the wall look, you would think anything before thinking it was a vegan restaurant. I've seen this place so many times after visitng Scoops and I never thought it was a restaurant. The inside is small and cute. And the service is good unless of course the place is packed.
Jackfruit. What a peculiar fruit, still have no idea what it looks like but my oh my what a great substitute for meat.
Todd's BBQ Sandwich: bbq jackfruit "pulled-pork" with pickles, onions and vegan mayo on a rustic roll is one of my favorites, just because the jackfruit really does taste like meat in a bbq pork sandwich, I was intrigued.
Jack's Super Burrito Wrap: flour tortilla stuffed with Jackfruit "carnitas", sweet potato fries, pinto beans, BBQ sauce and fresh cilantro was also tasty. Again with the jackfruit-still stumped at the oddity of this fruit.
I also had the soup of the day, which was mushroom soup. I'm not a huge fan of mushroom soup because its usually made with the boring mushrooms, but this one was very flavored and made with shiitake?
I love the sweet potato fries with the dipping sauce-some of the best I've had yet! This is a must have. So are the fried dill pickle chips (a new fan after having deep-fried pickles at the LA Fair this year)
Price is reasonable, everything was fresh, and bonus points for their good beer selection!
Some really really good cooking going on at this place.
The food is always really tasty...everything I've tried so far has been delicious. Also, they have a really excellent beer list! It's nice place to go out for lunch or dinner.
Nice cosy environment too...not too many tables, so there could be a wait if it's super busy. Reasonably priced, it's not super cheap, but it's not overpriced.
Even if you are not a vegan (I'm not)....you need to experience the food here, it is a solid 5 stars in my book!
Not "Woohoo, as good as it gets!
Not "Yay! I'm a fan.
Just "A-ok"
From the time we ordered, the food came out very quickly. Unfortunately, our waitress only approached our table 15mins after we were seated. The price is really good for a vegan restaurant, but they quality of the food was "meh". I ordered the spring rolls and a side order of plantains. I can't say that I was impressed with the spring rolls, and didn't finish them. The plantains weren't fried at the right temperature and I had a huge pool of oil at the bottom of the bowl. Its possible that I just made some bad choices because some of the other patrons food looked really good. I intend on trying Pure Luck again and updating this review.
The back parking lot is scary after dark. You almost expect to get robbed walking back to your car.
This place is a good, solid vegan restaurant. I love when my vegan buddies want to go out to eat because I'm always ready to consume some jackfruit. Really love the carne asada jackfruit burrito and the jack fruit bbq sandwich. I don't understand much about jackfruit (I guess I should read about it on wikipedia) but I do know I like how this place prepares it. I'm glad it's not "pretending to be meat", even if it looks kinda similar. It's just whatever it is.. and that is something good.
It's a little bit pricey here but the food does come with choice of fries/salad/soup and the service is great. I tried the curry coconut soup and it was awesome. Sweet potato fries do not disappoint. Our waiter had the best cat t shirt on.. I wish I had one just like his. I promise i'm not a stalker if you read this, waiter with cat shirt.
Don't forget- you get to go to Scoops afterward, even if you are a veg. So save room for dessert.
PS. They have parking in the back.. yes!!
I give five stars because of their good cooking and great beers.
The food is sooooo good. BBQ sandwich is fantastic, and they have the greatest vegan tacos that I've ever eaten. The jackfruit is a great subsitute for meat.
Try the potato pals extra crispy for that nice crunch.
If you're on a budget, try the rice and beans, they're delish.
Another Hel-Mel bike district gem conveniently located approximately 22 steps away (depending on how long your legs are) from SCOOPS. This neighborhood is fantastique and makes my heart smile.
Perhaps the greatest sleight of hand and trickery that would even baffle the great Harry Houdini. I am talking about the jackfruit. It looks and taste like pork. It even looks like there is pork fat on the faux-meat... unbelievable texture with a taste to match.
Lady friend and I ordered the fried plantains, carnitas taco plate, and an order of the BBQ pulled pork sandwich that came with a bowl of delicious corn chowder. Everything tasted great and I had nothing to complain about. The tacos tasted like real tacos and the pulled pork sandwich served with pickles tasted like a McRib sandwich minus the unnaturally shaped reconstituted meat.
Pure Luck has an excellent arsenal of craft beers that pair well together with the food and compliment the exciting flavors at a price that won't break the bank. The service is very unpretentious and welcoming. Felt like I was having dinner at a friend of a friend's house... eclectic décor that matches the hipster clientele.
I was a strict vegetarian for 5 years and have since switched over back to the dark side... a good woman will make you do funny things... vegetarian or not, this place is great and is definitely worth a trip. Finished off with some ice cream from SCOOPS and called it a perfect meal.
As we are bombarded with the expansion of commonplace corporate chain restaurants, it is quite refreshing to see a growing amount of unique progressive eateries that are straying away from mediocrity and providing an excellent experience.
Highly Recommended
I was visiting LA earlier this year, we sort of did a Vegan restaurant tour, b/c I'm vegan and it was awesome we had so many options.
I still think about this place...I want it bad.
Eat here....just do it.
I'm a bit late on reviewing this lovely little Vegan restaurant, but hey, it's better than if I never Yelped it!
Ok, so out of the blue Marthie D. calls me up and asked if I wanted to have dinner with her. I was like "Hmmm, maaaaybe....(secretly checks wallet to see if I have cash)". After making sure I had the greens, I said yes and off to Pure Luck we went. From the outside, Pure Luck looks kind of dumpy. To me, this means that the place must be legit. Sometimes when restaurants look a bit TOO fancy or put together, I suspect that it's to make up for their subpar meals. Well, there was no such thing as a bad dish at Pure Luck.
I ordered the pesto tofu sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and loved every single bite. However, I am docking 1 star because when I tried to eat my leftovers the next day, I saw just how oily the sandwich really was. I ended up throwing it away and only ate the fries.
The service was quick, casual, and friendly (just the way I like) and that made my experience even better. The girl who served us was kind enough to take our picture by the cool looking bamboo wall so that we'd have proof that we ate at Pure Luck.
Parking can be a hassle if you try to park on the same street as the entrance of the restaurant because there are a lot of time/day restrictions, but if you are smart and park one street over, you will have no problem finding a spot. Good luck and enjoy yourself some Pure luck!
A fun veggie restaurant. Great beers. Casual atmosphere.
I'm a fan of the fish tacos and the pickle chips.
I am not a fan of the jackfruit-as-meat-substitute. The appearance is unnervingly meat-like, but in the end, the flavor and texture leave me wishing it were seitan.
"This really isn't meat?"
That's exactly what I thought when I looked at my BBQ Sandwich.
If any of you checked the threads earlier last month I made a thread looking for a good Vegan place http://www.yelp.com/to... . And after all of the recommendations, I set my decision to try Pure Luck. Why? Because the notorious Scoops ice cream parlor is right across the street (that will be an upcoming review). Oh man, that ice cream was good.
Now onward to Pure Luck. Time to celebrate finals being over! When I drove to this place, I didn't realize it was in a run down portion of town. I saw neighborhood, Wilshire Center, on their Yelp page, and thought, "Oh Wilshire!!!" thinking it was like Wilshire on the west part of town by Westwood. Little did I know that I was totally wrong. But I didn't let that fool me. Pure Luck may just be that diamond in the rough.
May W. and I came in and were told to take a seat where ever we liked. We chose the large corner table, with a wall of bamboo. Quite pretty. I like to think we chose this big table because we're such fatties, and us fatties need our space. The friendly waiter gave us our menus and I asked what's good, (even though I knew what I wanted. I'm a good yelper and do my research!) She said Todd's BBQ Sandwich, so the Todd's BBQ Sandwich it was (with a side of Sweet Potato Fries.)
While waiting for our food, which didn't take too long, May W. and I took pictures with her camera of us admiring our bamboo wall. (Unfortunately I didn't have my camera, but luckily she did and I still had my blackberry.) After about 7-10 minutes our food came up and WOW it looked good.
That BBQ "Pork" sandwich really did look like some carnitas, and if I didn't know it was jackfruit, I would have sworn otherwise. This sandwich had BBQ jackfruit, pickles, onions, and a vegan mayo on a rustic roll. What is surprising is that it didn't taste like jackfruit, nor did it taste like meat at first. But after a few bites, it started to feel like meat. Crazy I tell you. Crazy. I felt like my eyes and my taste buds were fooling me. And that sweet potato fries... mm mmmm good! It came with some bbq sauce on the side, but honestly, they tasted fine without it.
I purposely didn't finish my sandwich to save room for Scoops, but I could of totally finished that plate since it was deeeee-lish. This small place makes you want to turn into a vegan. Well, it at least makes you totally consider it. Friendly and sweet service plus good food made me a happy customer there :)
I have never experienced jackfruit like I have at Pure Luck. Meat Substitute Extraordinaire!! It was my first time here - a friend had suggested we grab dinner here since we wanted to get Scoops for dessert. So yeah, I was a first-timer. After glancing through the menu I realized how I kept seeing jackfruit in the item descriptions. "Interesting..."
So I made sure I ordered something that included it in the ingredients. Carnitas Burrito with a side of platanos (sans cream). My friend got the "pulled pork" BBQ sandwich with some sweet 'tater fries.
Dear goodness! First off, my platanos were cooked to perfection! I wish I had more! And my burrito was pretty damn good (and massive too!) Great deal for the amount of food I got. I tried a bit of the BBQ sandwich. Let me just start with commending presentation alone on that baby! Jackfruit never looked so good and the pulled pork look was achieved to the max. Plus, the whole shebang tasted divine. I think my meat-loving buddies would go for this.
I was so happy that they served wine and beer. The pint of the IPA went great with my meal and my mood. Place is small but I loved the vibe. And there were some great people in there. I also enjoyed watching the bicyclists hanging outside by the bike shop. And I love that I could stumble over to Scoops for some gelato after my meal.
Parking was a bit tricky. Because Pure Luck is right by LA Community College most of the metered parking was taken and I believe I saw some spots that required permits. I drove around through the neighbourhood a bit until I found a block that had 2 hour parking between 8am to 10pm. Perfect since I got there around 8pm-ish. And I just had to walk around the block. Not bad at all. I am definitely going to have to come back to sample the rest of the menu.
I have eaten here 1 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 1 1 times!
Ruling!
Drink 1903!
My vegetarian boyfriend brought me here for one of our first dates. His great taste in food is one of the many characteristics that won me over very quickly.
Pure Luck is a vegan restaurant that offers a small menu, but filling and delicious food. Make sure to come here hungry, their portions are huge. Gigantic. Their food options range from sandwiches, Mexican food, salads, appetizers, and soup (of the day.) They also serve wine, beer, soju, etc. I have tried nearly everything on the menu, and have never left as a disappointed customer.
But my favorite is the Tofu Pesto Sandwich, with either a side of a caesar salad or Potato Pals, and a cup of Oolong Tea.
They don't serve any desserts, but Scoops serves some delicious gelatos on the other side of the street!
Great food, service, and people. The only hang up about this place is the parking. They have a small parking lot available right between Pure Luck and Orange 20 Bikes (a tiny orange shop next to Pure Luck with tons of illustrations drawn on the side.) There are meter parking right out front, but those are almost always taken. If you do manage to get one, make sure to keep track of your meter, I'm not sure if it's just me or the location, but the traffic police seems to always get someone when I'm there.
delicious! i love the tofu pesto sandwich and the organic microbrew selections. i go here every time i have a day off. great place to take any vegan cuisine skeptics! it will surely change their mind.
I was really surprised by the selection of beer and mixed soju drinks they had available here. It just seemed really shocking that they served soju in a non-korean establishment.
Their rosemary fries were absolutely divine! I think this place is better to go for drinks and appetizers than dinner.
I tasted their "jackfruit" torta and did not like the texture. It wasn't my thing.
I didnt feel like I fit into the scenery. It seems as though the patrons are mid twenties tattooed artsy Caucasian crowd comes here. I'm not trying to be racist or anything - its just an observation.
I have been going to Pure Luck for over a year now. It's a good place. Let me tell you why.
The sweet potato fries are TASTY. I love all sweet potato fries, but the way they cook these they seem to retain a bit more substance. Plus, they serve it with a peanut dipping sauce which compliments it quite nicely. They probably serve my favorite sweet potato fries around.
Todd's BBQ Sandwich is also very tasty. I get it without pickles, but the flavor is still there. On some days this is made better than on others. On all days, it tastes delicious.
And to be honest, that's all I've ever ordered for myself. I've brought other people to try, and they've had things varying from Angelica's Garbanzo Salad Sandwich to Kristen's Carnitas Wrap. People tend to like my regular sandwich the best, though.
Also, if you like tart lemonades, try their Fresh Lemonade. I find it to be very cleansing and refreshing. For some people it probably isn't sweet enough.
The other plus is that it's across the street from Scoops. The only minus is that service can be hit or miss (aka slow sometimes), even though everyone is generally nice and friendly.
Oh, and I'm not vegetarian and I still love this place. Which says something, I think.
Its good... for being vegan I guess.
I'm not vegan but my friends is.
I just wasn't too impressed. I mean i've been to another vegan place which was actually good even for a meat lover like me but this place, not so much.
The staff was pretty friendly. No complaints there.
The sweet potato fries was really good and is a pretty generous portion.
Cesar wrap was good.
Potato pal is pretty bland.
Tacos, I wish they found a better meat alternative. The tofu and jackfruit just didn't do it for me. Also thought they were a bit pricey.
If I come back, I could definitely do without the taco and potato pal.
Beer, initially I thought it was great that they had a nice selection of microbrews. Well untill I tried it.
Their "heavenly hefe". Its either the worst tasting hefe ever or they got their taps switched around. I really think its the later but who knows, I could be wrong.
I also tried another beer that I swear tasted like champagne.
This is my kind of place. A good friend of Jeff V's took us here to indulge in some vegan goodness. This place is obviously very popular and a hit since it has an abundant amount of reviews and a very high rating, so I will just say that this is a perfect lunch spot and if you are looking to expand your horizons regarding good food or are a vegetarian that likes to indulge in some vegan treats, Pure Luck is for you. They also have some very good micro brews. I have noticed something about vegetarians and vegans, we do know our beer. I am pretty sure it is because we don't care to or have time to get to know what "good" meat is, so we focus on knowing good brew and Pure Luck did have a tasty cider and pale ale.
If you are used to eating seitan and tempeh, you really won't find that being used at Pure Luck. I noticed the use of jackfruit (first time eating it ever) and more use of tofu. The jackfruit was cool and very interesting and I would use it again for meals but I have to say that I prefer other veggie options over jackfruit.
I must also say that we had a total bike babe sweetheart of a waitress for the remaining part of our meal and in my book nothing beats a cute waitress who is a bike dork babe. I can't wait to return.
i can't believe i've never had fried pickles before. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
they were really good. i've been here a couple times and always order the jackfruit carnitas tacos. they're pretty tasty, though the rice could stand some work (tends to be sticky) and the salsa could be more flavorful.
the beer selection is fantastic, and if you're looking for a low key healthful place to go, this should definitely be on your list.
I've been meaning to review Pure Luck for a while now. This is one of my favorite vegan spots this side of town. The atmosphere is like that of the NW, complete with decent microbrews and woodsy-looking photo-wallpaper so it definitely has that homey vibe.
I recommend the Fiesta Platter (the chips remind me of my mom's!), any of the awesome beers on tap, rosemary fries, both types of tacos, the gnocci, and the jackfruit "pulled-pork" BBQ sammie. The sandwich is a bit awkward to eat, but for fake meat, it's awesome. I had a soup with hominy in it once that was delicious as well.
The soju cocktails are an interesting idea, but not necessarily worth the effort. Same could be said for the sweet potato fries and the caesar rolls.
All-in-all, it's filling and earthy. I will continue to enjoy having well-fed vegans cook me up goodness.
I have to admit the food here is not bad, but it isn't great either. As a person who really, really loves food, I would only go to a vegan restaurant for a healthy, guilt free, meal. For years I've been going to RFD in Santa Monica (read my review for comparison sake) and I was excited to try this place as an alternative vegan place. I tried the sweet potato fries, fried pickles, bbq "pork" sandwick, and fish burrito. Yeah, the fries and pickles were not the healthiest things considering it was fried, but they came as sides. The pork sandwich was not bad, but I feel that the bbq sauce that they used was not very healthy. It tasted like some store bought, mass produced sauce that fried chicken or rib places used. And the burrito was super super salty. There was also sour cream in it that tasted like knudsen's, and I'm pretty sure that if the bbq sauce tasted like it was some mass produced thing, and the other condiments they use are of the mass produced kind (heinz ketchup, sri racha hot sauce, etc.) I have this feeling that the sour cream they used was made from dairy, which means it wasn't vegan. I may not be exactly sure of this, but if anyone can prove to me that I'm wrong about it, then I would gladly change my review.
And, besides this place being possibly pseudo vegan, the service is horrible. If I do decide to go back here, I would only order takeout.
Pure Luck, you have my heart. You always will...
The bf stumbled upon this place while attending a nearby play, and now we're loyal customers for years.
Parking can be tough, but if you don't mind walking a short residential block or two, you can find some no problem up the street.
My all time favorite: The jackfruit carnitas sandwich with sweet potato fries (though the curry gnocci is fantasmic too) Jackfruit carnitas (adobo style) scared me, it was like a huge pile of pork right there on my plate. However, appearances are totally decieving and i'm glad i found the tender flavorful chunks of jackfruit delightful on a crusty bun. It was vegan and it was delicious.
Sometimes, i have dreams where i'm eating their sweet potato fries with creamy aioli, and i wake up drooling.
This place is hip, trashy, classy, artsy, and funky all at the same time, with food that will knock your socks off without killing your wallet.
I will leave you with this though... http://www.quarrygirl.... An undercover investigation of LA vegan restaurants which shows a positive result of casein in their food.
As questions, judge for yourself, and live to eat. Always with an open mind.
Wow... so many reviews... I'm not sure if I can add much more valuable information. All I can give you is my personal experience.
I've been here a few times with friends during the school lunch hour. Thank goodness it's so close by. Thank goodness it has beer.
They have this really tasty black currant cider. I've only sampled it a few times from my friends. Unfortunately, I can't imbibe during my lunch hour because of the Asian glow. Genetics have foiled me again!
I've also ordered the taco combo. Two tacos with non-meaty meat inside served with a side of rice and beans. It was surprisingly fulfilling. If I didn't love meat so dearly, I could easily convert to veganism based on this restaurant alone.
The vibe is casual and eclectic. It has a somewhat environmental tree hugging feel to it. Very positive. I dig it. The waiter was cool and attentive. The food was uber-cheap. Plus, the bill was served with complimentary dum dum pops. What's not to love?
Things to remember:
1. There's street parking and a small lot behind the restaurant.
2. There's Scoops right across the street. I would recommend going there after lunch for a quick scoop of deliciousness.
Came back here a few weeks ago with another friend and they finally had the Heavenly Hefe! Now while I probably wouldn't call it heavenly, it was pretty good. I was happy to finally get to drink it :)
This time I ordered Todd's BBQ Sandwich since I wanted to try the oh-so-famously-delicious jackfruit. I don't think jackfruit by itself takes so great, but combined with the sauce and the rest of the sandwich, it is absolutely lovely.
I recommended the tofu pesto sandwich to my friend and she fell in love. Like seriously in love. As in it's been almost a month and she still brings it up every single time we talk.
So obviously the two of us had a blast and stuffed ourselves silly and now I am giving Pure Luck their five stars because I love this place.

Went here for dinner last night and I am a FAN!

Dear Pure Luck, You're so damn good. My carnivorous daughter even loves your pulled pork jackfruit sandwich.
The fried pickles are like calamari... create a pungent horseradish cocktail sauce and this starter will rock us.
one dime star for over use of barbecue sauce. We like variety.
All your food is good good good goood gooooood... the beers are splendid splendid splendid
Your waiters are adorable adorable adorable.
Can we kiss them, kiss them, kiss them?
The sweet potato fries, vegan bbq sandwich & black current cider are my favorite things at Pure Luck but I've had multiple other things there that are also really good. The only real drawback I'd say is that there is almost always a bit of a wait for dinner and they do occasionally run out of items. But all is forgotten once that yummy food arrives! Definitely on my top 10 veggie-friendly LA restaurants.
This place could be so pretentious if they wanted to but they aren't! It's awesome! The mix of people eating there and the super friendly staff rocked my world!
The food was very delicious too. If you don't like the texture of meat, this is your place..jackfruit doesn't have that toughness that meat does. Although it does give the appearance, it certainly doesn't taste or feel like meat. It's quite enjoyable.
And the fries? Oh good god, yes.
Motherfuckin' Fish Taco is the bomb!
That is all.
Okay. I lied.
The fish taco is a definite surprise. It's hard to get something to taste fishy without it tasting "fishy", but Pure Luck has done it. The "fish" was flakey and crispy, with a hint of sea flavor (thanks to the magic of nori). I wish the portion of the fish was a little bigger, but the flavors are on point. They nailed the creamy sauce, and of course the traditional pico de gallo and cabbage toppings. Be sure to add a squeeze of fresh lime for optimal flavor!
The tacos go for $4 ala carte, or you can order the 2 taco entree with a huge side of rice and beans.
Another point of interest is the beer. I tried the "Heavenly Hef" and it was really yummy, with hints of banana and peach. At $5 a pint, you can't go wrong!

How they managed to turn a fruit into tasty pulled pork is beyond me. Then to… Read more »
This place has really, really good vegan food & beer. The service is slow, so come when you are not in a hurry and enjoy the place.
There is shaded seating outside that is a really nice place on a hot day to read a book or visit with friends while you wait for your food.
Speaking of food...!
The jackfruit tacos could be my main meal breakfast, lunch and dinner. They are THAT good. The tofu ones are fine ~ not as good as Kogi ~ but the jackfruit tacos rock. And at $3 a pop, I can happily fill up on 3 and get out of the joint for $10.
AND there is parking in the back! AND there's dill pickle chips!
The place has a cool vibe and I can eat good tacos & chips when I go there. I like it.
Last time I was at this restaurant I saw the drummer from Mika Miko wearing a knotted handkerchief around her neck, eating a plate of jackfruit barbecue. That is what Pure Luck means to me.
Also, the sweet potato fries are tremendous.
I went for the food. I was not expecting to find such an awesome beer list! They had Hair of the Dog in bottles - wonderful! I had the Caesar Salad, and their house dressing was really excellent.
Not too far from the Red Line, and quite close to the 204/754.
I can't believe I haven't written a review for Pure Luck yet!
One of it's first patron-ettes (-esses?), , I've always been a huge fan of the gnocci with their magical 'fry sauce', their bamboo-photo wall (remniscent of the local Perkins diner in college), cute portland girl vibe and close proximity to Scoops, not to mention their innovative use of Jackfruit.
but NOW I'm a fan of their beer and BBQ sauce! Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
Like peanut butter and jelly, just MADE for eachother..and I don't even LIKE beer except on scorching summer nights!! The best part? The leftover BBQ Sammich tasted even better the next day! Even my meateating foodie friend munched enthusiastically.
I apologize for sounding like an infatuated 9 year old picking up a copy of Tiger Beat, but..well.that's just how Pure Luck makes me feel.
PS: On the off chance you don't know this already, Pure Luck used to be a Korean 'hostess bar' ; they liked the name and old sign and kept both.
Pure Luck is the reason I went vegan.
The thought of eating only salad for the rest of my life was sad; I didn't know how my vegan friends did it. Then they took me to what they call the "best half-block in L.A.", the cluster of stores on Melrose and Heliotrope.
After a year and a half, I had the menu memorized, and the waitstaff knew me very well. Even though I'd almost always get the same thing (tofu pesto sandwich with a side of potato pals and black currant cider), I would always look through the menu and try to convince myself that I'd try something new. I must have been so annoying to them, because they knew I'd get the same thing I always did.
A week before I moved out of L.A., I tried the BBQ sandwich... and went back Every. Day. till I took that final flight out of the state. On that last day, I went to Pure Luck for lunch, ate a BBQ sandwich there, and got a second one to take on the plane. I don't know how they do it, but the last few bites of it are always creamy, almost cheesy in its taste and consistency.
The rest of the menu is really good, too. I didn't really care for the Caesar rolls, I thought they were a little on the dry side. But the potato pals are awesome, and the dipping sauce they serve with it is perfect. I've tried many times to reproduce potato pals, the tofu pesto sandwich, and jackfruit 'carnitas', to no avail. I'll just have to dream about them till I find my way back to L.A.
i sat in their outside patio area.. i liked it, especially around 6ish, not too dark not too bright.
ordered the hefe and the tofu pesto sandwich. was really into that basil pesto... and the tofu was perfectly grilled, nice slabs of it, not too thin and not too thick. the rustic roll was toasted and really good.
the side spinach salad also a winner.
this was nice and chill, right around the corner from my house. will come back here often.
This place is decent, I mean the food is nothing special but they do have a micro brewery and the beer choices a delicious.
Def. try it even just for beers
I heard about Pure Luck because they serve jack fruit tacos and I've heard good things about 'em. So, when I was in LA I decided to try 'em out.
I went with a few friends and we ended up ordering beer (which they have a nice selection of, though it feels like they are a bit pricey) and an appetizer of their rosemary fries and fried dill pickles. Texas friends have raved about fried dill pickles and I've never seen 'em on a menu before so I felt we had to have 'em. And ya know what? They are good. I wonder if non-vegan versions would be better, but only time (or trip to Texas) will tell. And the rosemary fries were pretty good themselves but I felt the real stars there were the fried dill pickles.
For a main course I had the jack fruit "carnitas" tacos. I never had jack fruit before but I have to say, it's pretty good! I thought the tacos really worked but I did drown 'em in lime and hot sauce. The rice and beans were OK, but kind of lacked real flavor. I'd probably get the side salad the next time over that. But the tacos, they were good in my opinion and definitely something I would eat again. I wish I would have gotten the soup of the day, Pozole because it did look good!
Overall, I thought the food was pretty good but a few things lacked flavor (rice & beans). It was kind of expensive, but I think that's to be expected. In all honesty, I'm just cheap.
Ate here for lunch today. Ordered the BBQ "pulled pork" sandwich with sweet fries. I put "pulled pork" in quotes, because it's not really pork. This is a Vegan restaurant. Quite tasty all the same. My friend ordered a very tasty wrap. I would come back again.
I love this place. A hole in the wall with tasty food and a warm atmosphere.
It's always full but they turn the tables around quickly so you never have to wait too long.
The gnocchi taters, fried pickles, jackfruit sloppy Joe and amazing soups are all worth having.
I don't drink but the beers look unique.
I do recommend the iced oolong tea.
Go across the street to Scoops for dessert.
I love the food. The vegan BBQ pork, mock tuna salad, potato pals. All soooo good.
You know what sucks though? Is their service. It keeps getting worse and worse too. Dear management, if you're reading this: this is a huge problem. No way it should ever take a party of two 2 hours to get in and out of this place, especially when there's like 1 other table. Really bad. I'll be ordering take out from now on.
I cannot understand why this place gets the rave reviews that it does, because I have never had an amazing experience here. I remember ordering the tofu-pesto sandwich that all Yelpers seem to label as to-die-for, but I was not that impressed. It was a very basic sandwich that looked/tasted like it came out of a vegan 101 cookbook. I was also looking forward to the sweet potato fries but they seemed rather burnt and a bit flavorless. The service was so-so (we were left waiting a little longer than usual before we ordered, as well as when we waited for our check).
So, not many positive things to say here... I might be willing to give it another chance, but right now it just stands as a solid 2 star restaurant for me. I guess I'll be either traveling out to El Segundo for the Veggie Grill.
