Yum. I've been here twice and I really enjoyed sampling their namesake dish, pupusas. Described as "a traditional dish from El Salvador," pupusas ($3 ea) are thick grilled corn tortillas that are filled with your choice of ingredients. I tried the loroco con queso (fiddlehead fern and cheese) and my friend tried frijoles con queso. We were both happy but the fiddlehead fern was much more exciting -- yum!
We also tried a couple of soft tacos ($1.50 ea), and some chips, salsa, and guacamole. We found it very reasonably priced.
They were very friendly which is always a plus!
Oh, and good to know is that their refried beans are vegetarian -- not made with lard.

This place is the same place as the other Pupusas place people are writing about. I decided to write in this one because it has the correct restaurant name. Pupusas is such a general term you can't just call a place "Pupusas."
This place is a nice hole in the wall kind of place with maybe 5 tables at most. They do take-out so that's what I did. I just wanted a nice filling snack for dinner and a pupusa is the perfect thing. I ordered one pupusa with chicharron, bean and cheese. Although they made a mistake and gave me one with only bean and cheese in it, I had no complaints because it was DELICIOSO! It just melted in my mouth. It came with a very refreshing carrot and cabbage relish (I don't know what it's called....) with tomato sauce which at first I thought was hot sauce but wasn't at all. It was fresh yummy pureed tomato.
It's a nice snack for $3.25. I'm DEIFINITELY coming back here and try the other stuff on the menu.

We all dream (ha, maybe just me!) of that amazing dive Mexican restaurant that skimps on the decor but triumphs in it's amazing carnitas, carne asada, and salsa! Fresh homemade chips and horchata, amazing breakfast burritos with chorizo... this is what we want!
Sorry guys, but Pupusas is not this place.
There are some shining moments at Pupusas, like their fire-roasted jalapeno peppers on the salsa counter... these are to die for! Their horchata is delicious and comes in those huge monster styrofoam cups... the flavor is so smooth and you even taste ricey bits on the bottom of the glass. It's legit. The pupusas are also worth a purchase.
So, those are the highlights, here is the bad news:
1. $3.00 for a small horchata? This is an outrage. Not the big one... the small plastic cup. I know it's Boulder, but this is a rip-off.
2. My carnitas burrito was barely edible! It was equal parts slimy fat and actual pork. I literally could not eat it. Someone in the kitchen needs to learn to distinguish between fat and meat. Disgusting.
3. Did I say expensive? I recently got a breakfast burrito with chips, and 2 horchatas... and the total with tip was $17. Bandito robbery!
So, here is my tip. Enjoy a pupusa, save money and buy the large horchata, and eat some fire-roasted jalapenos. But go to Efrain's if you want better Mexican food in Boulder. They're not overpricing the menu, and it tastes much better.

Hmmm...since Yokes F. has specified that this is actually the correct name for this restaurant, I'm copying my review to this location as well as the abbreviated-name location for the restaurant's reviews on Yelp. This one, however, is not categorized correctly, because Pupusa's is a Salvadoran restaurant primarily and not solely a Mexican restaurant at all. Category is important too. So I'm submitting a correction for that. Anyway, here's a copy of my review--I love this restaurant and the service here, and FYI they have 10+ tables inside plus several additional tables out on the patio during the warmer weather. My review follows:
*****************
I am so grateful my neighbor enlightened me about Pupusa's arrival in our neighborhood.
I've loved it since my first visit.
Primarily a Salvadoran restaurant, the featured menu item here is... you guessed...the Pupusa. There are many kinds including FIDDLEHEAD FERN. Can you imagine? Haven't tried it but one of my friends did and didn't complain so I assume it was good.
Fresh salsa bar ... mighty nice!
Everything on the menu is good. You just can't go wrong here and the prices are so reasonable. The soups ... impressive looking but haven't tried them yet. I enjoy the Pupusas, the enchiladas, the burritos, anything on the breakfast menu which is served all day--it's all good!!
This place is tiny and expands seating capacity in the warmer weather when the outdoor parking lot patio can be utilized.
For me the tininess adds to the charm, as does the personal and caring service.
For me the funkiness of the center it's in further adds to the charm, as the funkiness of N. Boulder appeals to me far more than all the mixed-use yuppie-ish chaotic stuff going on over on the other side of Broadway.
Magnificent desserts here too so save room...and diabetics, try a bite and increase your Metformin dose for the day. :)

This is the real stuff, none of the swanky Mexican/Latin wannabe food served at so many pricey restaurants in Boulder. If you are looking for some authentic, South of the border food this is the place. The only thing I missed was a nice cold beer but their Mexican sodas made up for it.

Looking to break away from the typical American interpretation of the Mexican restaurant? Try Pupusas, an out-of-the-way hole in the wall in North Boulder. It's in the same strip as the North Boulder Coffeeshop, where the old Greyhound stop used to be. Step inside and you'll feel like you're in Chihuahua, not Boulder.
Seating is limited, as the place is kind of small. At the time of my lone visit there, about two months ago, they hadn't completed an outdoor patio. Assuming that's up and running, that will immensely help the shortage of seats. Even without a seat, the food is worth the trip. When our order was ready, my girlfriend and I--unable to find a table--simply took our food to a nearby park. Pupusas in the park is a great way to spend an afternoon.
