Pullen Park
- Good for Kids:
- Yes
6 reviews for Pullen Park
It's got a carousel and a train. What more could a kid want? Oh, you're not a kid? Fine. It's still a beautiful park with plenty to do. Paddle boats, tennis, or even baseball diamonds that always seem curiously abandoned if you want to get an afternoon kickball game in. Seriously. Kickball.
The aquatic center is lovely if you happen to be free on weekday afternoons for a swim, but weekends find it pretty jam packed.
While the main drags in the park can get plenty of traffic on a nice day, there are still amazingly plenty of pockets out there where you can simply sit down in the shade and enjoy a beautiful park.
I have no comment on the Andy Griffith plaque.

Pullen is what a flagship city park should be. It's got everything from open spaces to great playgrounds to an old-fashioned carousel. The Pullen Park train is an important Raleigh icon, and is a fun diversion from doing anything active while your at the park. Other rides include a little boat carousel for tiny kids, and paddle boats for rent to take out on the artificial lake.
On Summer afternoons the park is FILLED with groups of people doing all kinds of things, and there's always some sort of family reunion going on in the reserved picnic shelters.
A recent addition in the past few years is a bronze statue of Andy Griffith. It's apparently really popular with visitors to the city - I've actually been asked for directions to it a couple of times by people driving by in their cars. Interesting trivia: a few months after the statue was installed, someone stole the plaque from its base... I don't if it was ever found, but there was a bit of a ruckus in the local news, and a lot of people took it REALLY seriously.

Pullen Park was THE park I wanted to go to growing up. The park has an excellent playground, paddleboats, a carousel (I believe left over from the 50's) and a working train that you can ride. Tickets for the carousel and train are relatively inexpensive and make for a fabulous afternoon when you're a kid (or when you're an adult for that matter).
The park has a pretty large picnic area as well with large covered picnic areas you can reserve for your school group /birthday party/family reunion.

Pullen Park is without question the quintessential Raleigh park. You won't find many native Raleigh-ites who haven't visited this little slice of heaven a few times over the years. It's one of the more kid-friendly parks in the area, with a great playground (including the famous train caboose), carousel, paddle boats, a concession stand, and of course SWINGS! It's not uncommon to walk through the park on a warm evening and see people of all ages enjoying the swingsets or just taking in nature on one of the grassy knolls that fill this conveniently-placed nirvana.
There's also the Pullen Aquatic Center with an Olympic pool and all sorts of aquatic classes and courses. I've never actually used the center, so I can't really speak to that. Many people don't even realize the center is there, in fact - the park is usually the main attraction.
Pullen park is amazing because I can swing on their swings and ride the old carousel and get in a boat and boat around a little lake and feed fish and walk over big, arching bridges all in one afternoon.
I can also cross the street and use the pool, if I feel like it.
In the spring (early march) you can see all sorts of flowers and trees in bloom. It's really sweet smelling and heart warming. (which is a weird feeling for me to experience.)
Come to pullen park, because you're never too old for a swingset.

Once in a great while I feel the irrepressible urge to swing and for the quick gratification of that, Pullen Park has my adoration. Most other parks have those baby swings with the small seats that would castrate me were I to try to use them. Theres also a boathouse to rent paddle boats if you want to cruise around the small lake though in truth, if you wanted to do that I'd recommend one of the bigger lakes in the area. This place is an oasis, a small patch of tranquil amidst the hustle and bustle of NCSU and downtown Raleigh. It serves as a quick fix for peaceful natural splendor if you're in the area.
