A stop at the Pukalani Superette was a highlight of our Maui vacay this past August.

I rec'd a twitter tip that the Pukalani Superette had the best bento boxes, according to da locals...and the Superette did not disappoint.

There weren't any picnic tables in sight, so we took our bento boxes to go. Everything was so so so good! Even the typical beef teriyaki was really good. We sampled the chicken lau lau, above said beef, lo mein, roast pork and of course some spam & spam/egg musubi! Yum!

If you're in the upcountry, actually, even if you're not, make your way here!

I miss this store... i used to grab me an arizona green tea everyday here and used to get the shakes when they ran out... i remember for about a week all the stores i hit up on maui were all out!!!

fillin up my cooler when the heineken's were on sale and grab me a spam musubi when i didn't have time to cook anything or i was in a hurry.

one day i shall return to shop at this store again... i usually don't support moms and pops stores but this superette actually had decent prices...

BROKE DA MOUTH CHILI CHICKEN!

brok-da-mout (slang) - used to describe a sensation after eating food so delicious that one doubts if their mouth, tongue, and taste buds will ever be able to function again.

That pretty much sums up Pukalani Superette's chili chicken. Breaded, crisp, moist, juicy chicken covered in a sweet spicy sauce...it's pretty much heaven in a take out box. They also have some excellent, albeit unusual, smoked tako poke, excellent turkey and stuffing, etc.

If you need a snack or want to pack a lunch for a day on the beach or hiking up Haleakala, you should definitely stop by! And while you're at it, can you Fedex me some chili chicken? Pleeeeease!

Venture up to paniolo country and find Pukalani Superette.

Do you like Tako? He'e in Hawaiian. It's Octopus. Pukalani Superette makes the absolute best Tako Poke in all of Hawaii Nei.  First they lomi (massage) it with salt, then they smoke it, mix it with maui onions, chili peppers and some killer sauce. Try it, you'll be hooked.

Heading for a drive up to Haleakala or down to the beach? Stop here and pick up some local grindz. Mini bento's, okazuya deli type foods.

If you don't think this is the best Tako poke, let me know and I'll refer you to my Dr. to have those taste buds of yers checked out.

If I'm upcountry, I try to stop by the Pukalani Superette, for the fresh produce and local deli dishes. I love their potato mac salad - a Hawaiian classic.  The staff is friendly and  the place reminds me of old ma and pa groceries stores that existed before the big corporate grocery stores came to be. A place for locals and visitors. Definitely not a touristic spot. I looked up the definition of Superette and the definition fits the name.

The Superette, in most cases, offers a closer alternative (in terms of distance) for purchasing grocery items than super markets,  but at a slightly higher price (not necessarily true).  On most occasions one would only use a Superette for small purchases such as milk, bread or deserts. In PS case for local inexpensive grind.

Above all else, the Superette sells convenience.

Kind of a neat little market with all of your basic needs.  We orginally wanted to eat at a breakfast place nearby - Cow Country Cafe - that is no longer there.  Then my sister remembered the Chili Chicken at P.S. and all of their little bentos.

Their bentos are so popular now that their prices have been raised.  You can find loco mocos, Spanish beans, beef stew, sushi rolls, mac salad, and lots more.  The loco moco is good with tender ground beef.  And the chili chicken is really more like a sweet local Korean fried chicken.

P.S. saved me from having to eat McD and gave me a taste of plate lunch a la carte.

My friend and I were in search for good authentic local food in maui and we came across this place (found in a small review in American Way magazine). When we first arrived, we were a lil surprised to find out we drove about 30 minutes to go to a supermarket!!  But don't let that decieve you. This was really the best lunch we had while on the island of maui. They have food in the market in small take out boxes, ranging from fried chicken, teri beef or teri pork, shrimp katsu, mac salad, ocean salad (seaweed), Namasu (pickled cucumbers and veggies),lomi lomi salmon, noodles, egg rolls, tako poke, chicken adobo, korean short ribs, spam masubi, hot dog masubi, and many many more.
my fave of them all is the lomi lomi salmon with the namasu, white rice, teri beef and ocean salad. Sure did hit the spot and makes my mouth salivate when i think of the food..
