7 reviews for Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant
This little Mexican joint is A-OK in my book. We've gotten take out from here time to time and it satisfies a craving without knocking your socks off. I've also gotten into the habit of buying rice here when I'm making Mexican food at home since Mexican rice is the only thing I have trouble replicating at home and theirs is quite fabulous.
I wouldn't really endorse coming here if you're a foodie visiting the Napa region. Instead, I'd head over to Azteca Market in St. Helena for a killer burrito. Also, Miguel's in Calistoga serves some pretty good sit-down Mexican that is probably more authentic.
After our lil' adventure up to Table Rock, my friend and I were famished, not to mention chilly. So, we stumble across Puerto Vallarta on our way into Calistoga and decide, yes! Chile Rellenos here we come (I was with my friend who shares my quest for, and appreciation of a GOOD chile relleno).
We order mexican hot chocolates ('cuz we were chilly, remember?!) and it is good, but I get the feeling they just added some chile powder to a packet of swiss miss or something.
We order chile rellenos and they are just ok. My mouth doesn't feel like it's on fire so I douse the damn thing in tapatio. The cheese is not as ooey-gooey as I hoped for, and there's not much I can do about that part. I am disappointed.
The chips are good. Salsa? Not so much.
The waiter is friendly, but weirdly intense.
It took me awhile to convince my boyfriend (he was proudly raised in a Mexican household) to eat here with me. The food isn't that spicy or authentic and it's definitely geared towards gringos and tourists. However, their salsa is tasty and the chips are deftly salted right out of the fryer. After several visits together here, the BF (swore i would never use that abbreviation, but it is handy) is a convert.
At first glance, you might see crispy chicken tacos on the menu and think, "boring!" ...but at Puerto Vallarta, they braise the whole chicken with chilies and onions. They fry the taco shell so that when you bite into it, it doesn't collapse all over you...the shredded chicken provides a wonderful, juicy bite with just the right amount of grease left behind from the fry action, topped with shredded lettuce, cheese and plain chopped tomatoes...it reminds me of something I would make at home, except I didn't have to! They also give you a generous dollop of sour cream on the side. It is the perfect, albeit homogenized, crispy chicken taco.
The seafood cocktails are fresh and delicious, I always order them with extra limes and avocado...the chili rellenoes are reminiscent of one of those out dated casseroles that my friend's Chicana mom would make...and the enchiladas are a sea of melted cheese and rich brown "ranchero" sauce that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'll admit it...I'm not ashamed.-EFK
Heard raves about the authenticity of this place, so we had to try it. Although it didn't quite live up to the hype (we have so many good Mexican places around home), the food was still decent. And, the portions were large. Can't say this place is anything special, but it did the job.
This place sucks. I will never eat at this place again.
Cheap, tasty lunch for 2 outdoors in Calistoga?
Two ways to know if your Mexican joint is authentic:
1- The chips are fresh, made on the premises (or hand-carried by donkey to the premises) and the salsa is of the same caliber!
2- The beverages on hand are actually imported from Mexico.
yeah it is not fancy...yeah it's not that big...but you can dine al fresco..didnt do that today b/c it was raining a bit...the way i check a mexican restaurant if i will like it or not is always and yes always order a shrimp or fish ceviche and their tortilla soup. well i ordered the shrimp ceviche and the tortilla soup. i like their ceviche (they didnt skimp on shrimp). it reminded me of my friend's ceviche. well the chicken tortilla soup is mediocre..i didnt really care for the sliced celery that they put in that soup. and juz before we left (around 5 pm)...all of a sudden the whole place was packed. we ate here after our mudbath experience (girls day-out). we ate here b/c my sister said they have good mexican food.
