I pick up a chicken and spinach burrito with sour cream and hot sauce from Puebla at least once a week for lunch, for just under $8...they are addictive.
The plentiful spinach is fresh and bright green, just cooked - not dark mush - and the chicken tender though crispy at the edges. Green hot sauce blows your head off but has real flavour. Jose is very friendly and efficient.
I give the places four stars not because it's haute cuisine but because it's Haute Street and 100% consistent...
Was in a mood for something smaller than a meal but bigger than a snack so I split 3 enchiladas (with green sauce) with my sister--- it was fantastic! To top it off, it was only $7.04 including tax.
Very spicy, but not deadly. Left feeling very content. I'm so glad I heard about this hole-in-the-wall (from Yelp, of course), I can't wait to go back soon.
Note: The bathroom is only for employees!
Back when I lived on 1st n 1st the owner of this spot was like a mother to my roommate and I. I've given a number of other menu items a shot, but the go-to for me is the Chicken Mole Burrito.
i've only ordered from Puebla once, and it was great. i live pretty nearby, so the delivery was super fast. the price was great. my roommate and i ordered the carne asade burritos with a side of hot sauce. it was a LOT of food, and it was very filling and very good. i'd suggest getting some sour cream on the burrito, because that hot sauce is like lava. yum!
$5-ish will get you a plate of 2 tacos al pernal. That's big fat chunks of roast pork shoulder, with tomatillo salsa, cilantro and onions.
Delicious dive-y food, and the perfect sustenance when you're about to go out drinking in dive-y bars in the neighborhood.
Bring friends, so you have someone to talk to. I went alone before I met up with friends at one of the aforementioned dive bars, and had to suffer the aural horrorshow of telenovellas and the one-sided conversation of a community college do-gooder who bought a taco for some homeless dude and then talked his ear off about the importance of doing good deeds and how lucky he was to be poor, because god loves the poor and money is evil. No shit? Give the homeless guy your wallet and STFU, frat boy.
Cheap, delicious, authentic, and very big portions. It don't get better than that. So far, I've had the bistec torta (a big two hander with a bread that combines the best features of Italian and French breads) and the chicken cutlet with chipotle sauce and rice and beans (aka #55). The rice is quite mushy and flavorful, and pairs well with the beans.
Strongly recommend.
Ordered takeout steak and chicken fajitas. It was a fairly small portion, and the meat was particularly well spiced. It was ready pretty quicky, but the food is nothing to write home about, even if there aren't many Mexican places around. Not terrible, but better options are nearby.
I'm not from the southwest or Puebla, but gosh darn-it, I love this place. (I have dreams about their tomatillo sauce.) This little joint should not be overlooked. Tasty Tasty Tasty!!! My favorite is the spinach or cactus burrito, but get ANYTHING with the green sauce. If you can handle the heat, you won't be sorry.
I read through all of the Yelp reviews for Puebla Mexican Food & Coffee Shop, took a long drink from my bottle of Tecate beer, and gave it all some thought.
Now people here have (unfavorably) compared the food you can get at Puebla to the Mexican food you can get in California, Texas or Mexico...
Here's the thing, though: I don't live in those places. I live here, in the East Village, just a few short blocks from this restaurant.
And goddammit I like the food here (and I'm from California and I've visited Texas and Mexico!!). Yeesh.
Anyway, I definitely like the food at Puebla well enough to come back again.
Tonight I shut down my computer, put on my hat and coat and walked out of my office with a big smile on my face, knowing that I'd stop off here on the way home from the F train.
I had the tacos de pernil. Tasty pork, with cilantro and tomatillo sauce, and a bottle of grapefruit soda.
It's a really inexpensive meal, unless you order rice and beans on the side and a drink. Then, it's costing you over $10.00. At that price, you start thinking about where else you might eat, so stick with the two tacos.
I work just down the street and this restaurant is a staff favorite. On the question of authentic: The woman who runs the place is from Chihuahua, I believe, and actually was an immigrant granted amnesty by Reagan in 1987! The mole is fantastic, the best I've ever had. I buy sides and put in on everything. The shrimp tacos are really tasty and juicy. I love the steak tacos and usually order them without onions. The burritos are HUGE.
Try the beef stew, which is so tasty and fllling and only $6. Even better, get breakfast tacos. Very lovely. The best thing about this place's tacos, by the way, is the way they are wrapped "wrap" style, with double corn tortillas, then in wax paper and foil. One-handed eating, no mess no fuss.
The only bummer I have is that sometimes I want to "customize" my tacos and they frown on that. Also there is no fish taco. But everything else is so good, so fresh and the family that runs it are great. For 5-8 dollars you can ahve a truly satisfying meal quickly, without all the salt of most places.
Texas transplants rejoice. They serve breakfast burritos.
And thus, my search for breakfast tacos in the city ended when I stumbled upon this neighborhood Mexican eatery. I was actually looking for the Downtown Bakery when I found their menu on an apartment door (don't let the name fool you: they serve Mexican food).
Turns out Puebla has the exact same menu. The guy behind the counter said Puebla changed its name. Made sense. Until I found the Downtown Bakery was just a block north.
I'm so confused. But Puebla's breakfast burritos are almost as good as they make back in Texas.
It may be a hole in the wall, but the food is fantastic! It's the best authentic mexican you can find in the city. Order at the counter and they bring it to your table.
I am absolutely in love with their mole enchiladas! The price is extremely inexpensive and you will be filled. FYI, the green chile enchiladas are extremely spicy, so it's advised to get the rice and beans with it.
I ordered from here last night with a friend when I was playing pool league at Mona's on Ave B.
We ordered chicken nachos, and a chicken quesadilla and a beef quesdilla. I made sure to specify NO JALAPENOS on the nachos since my friend is allergic and for GUAC ON THE SIDE.
Nope. Guac SMOTHERED the nachos and jalapenos everywhere. The quesadilla wasn't bad, but I've had better.
It's inexpensive, decent Mexican food for takeout. Pretty mediocre but it does the job.
Average Mexican food for New York means below average for just about everywhere else. I don't know why, that just seems to be the case.
Puebla is above average for New York, especially when it comes to their breakfast burritos. They're amazing and, even though it's not on the menu, you can have steak added. And don't forget lots of hot sauce.
Still, their normal burritos, quesadillas, and whatnot aren't exactly stunning. It's worth the extra block walk up to the Downtown Bakery if you like wet, juicy, sweet pork and refried beans in your flour tortilla.
Anyone who doesn't get this place doesn't deserve to eat mexican - it's one of the best places in the city and is quite authentic.
The rice and beans are always a good indicator of the care that the food is prepared with and there's no doubt there's plenty of lard, chicken stock and love put into these. The chipotle is very fresh and bright and quite light (lots of tomatoes) while still being spicy. The chicken is great and so is the pork and the tamales.
What's not good are things like the guacamole which is whipped into a froth and leaves a bit to be desired. I love this place though and probably eat here once a week at least.
worst delivery experience ever! DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! they got our order all wrong. the delivery person asked me if it was correct i said no but he didn't seem to speak good English (or her was faking) and i paid him. We opened our order and it was totally WRONG. We called and the woman who answered the phone said she was the manager that there was no way we were going to cheat her. there was hair in our food to which she said "oh hell no we wear hair nets". she told us she was going to come over and look through our food and slammed down the phone. She hasn't made it here yet but DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$$ or TIME!
So, I was sitting in DBA awaiting a friend. I was starving and didn't want to grab that first drink without a bit of a barrier to the brain. So, I was deciding between the shady Chinese restaurant and the shady Mexican restaurant with the obligatory "Authentic Mexican Food" blurb on the sign.
Actually, the sign completely turned me off because I can't count the number of times I've walked into a place with a similar claim only to be greeting by someone, let's just say - not from south of the border.
But after Yelping it, I decided to give it a try and lo and behold I was greeting by the real deal. I had a steak taco which I asked them to make without onions. And it still came with onions. And I tried their quesadilla.
Both was pretty damn tasty despite the onions. The quesadilla was refreshingly crispy.
And I wasn't even buzzed at the time. That came shortly later.
A no frills authentic Mexican dining experience cooked by Mom. Well, somebody's mom. This is the type of place you'll find down the street from the zocalo, where the locals eat twice a day. The food is very good, and although many things are necessarily of the pre-made, reheated variety, each time it has surpassed my expectations. The pork tacos ($6) are excellent, the chicken mole tamales ($6) were good, and the chile rellenos plate ($8) was awesome. The tortillas are ok, so if you're craving fresh soft corn tortillas you might be a little disappointed, but the rice and beans kick ass.
Whoever said that you can't get authentic Mexican food in Manhattan never ate here. This place was my religion as a Sunday brunch spot and hangover cure. The huevos rancheros, the enchiladas with rice and beans and the tamales are superior in quality and price than any restaurant in SF! While the atmosphere leaves much to be desired, the food will have you coming back for more. Also, you can't beat their homemade green sauce! It is scorchingly delicious!
cheaper than la esquina, and still not that authentic. i order from here a lot, but i wouldn't say it's great. tasty when you're really hungry.
might be best if you're slightly buzzed (i guess you could say that about most mexican fast food).
I'm always searching for authentic Mexican food, rather than the greasy, cheesy (pun intended) and/or swank stuff featured in magazine articles and/or advertised in neon or bubble letters. This is exactly that place - my fiance and I left, and for the last hour have been unable to talk about much else but the "comida mexicana mas rica" in New York. The service was great and judging from the phone ringing off the hook and the revolving line, our satisfaction is not a new thing. I had mole enchiladas and he had steak burrito - try the place, love the place.
