I first went to the Publick House 10 years ago for a relatives wedding. The main function room and the Publick House grounds are fantastic for weddings. I went here again recently for a close friend's wedding. The area is still excellent, and I really enjoyed the accomodations.

The rooms are motel style, and every room has a private balcony, which I thought was awesome. It's the little things like that that I remember. The bed was comfortable enough, but don't expect the Ritz. It's nice enough!

What I really liked about the accommodations is the level of privacy our party had. We were able to have a good group of people in rooms post-reception without any concern for disturbing neighbors. I'm not sure if the PH arranged the rooms so we weren't disyrbing anyone, or if nobody cared. Either way, we were able to extend our celebration into the wee hours without worry.

The staff was helpful, and the bar staff flexible when they announced last call. Seems as though they'll keep going at the basement bar within reason if there are enough people who want to keep enjoying their libations.

I recommend this as a place for weddings, and for people who may be staying here for one. The prices to stay are very reasonable!

The prices were about on par with most of the restaurants I've been to like his. Nice on the inside, we sat on the patio which was very pleasant. The food was ok, not bad, but not great. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

I would echo other past reviewers and say that I would like to give this place a 3.5.  A review of our meal:

I had a regular garden salad, my fiance had an wedge salad.  My salad was fine (can't really do anything to mess up lettuce, cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes!), my fiance's salad was not a typical wedge salad.  First off, the iceberg lettuce is supposed to be really cold- his was not.  In addition, they served it with thousand island dressing, not blue cheese.  They added a bit of a twist with bacon and sun-dried tomatoes.  Overall it tasted fine.

Wines are pricey for the un-interesting selections they have on the menu.

Dinner for me was the salmon with basil pesto gnocchi and asparagus.  The gnocchi in the pesto was very good and I liked the tomato coulis underneath the salmon.  The salmon was cooked well- nice and crispy from the oven!  The aspargus however, was undercooked and not even el dente.  Eww.

My fiance ordered fish and chips and his meal was fairly standard.  The fish was nice and crispy with tasty fries.

Overall, an okay meal.  I'm happy that we had a buy one entree, get a second entree free coupon though.

A lot of charm from being in The Publick house, adds to your dining experience.  I had Lunch here, twice, once having the Fried Haddock Sandwich and once having Lobster Ravioli.  I enjoyed both.  They make their own potato chips and have their own in house Bakery.

The feature Sunday Brunch and a Dinner Theatre Package, which includes dinner for two, Breakfast for two, two tickets to the Stageloft Repertory Theater, plus one night's stay in their Inn.

Service in the 3/4 full restaurant was just mediocre, considering this is an area attraction and historic hotel.  I went by myself this saturday morning and waited a loooooooooong time for simple scrambled eggs. I heard several other complaints from other vocal diners. I am assuming the kitchen staff was lacking today because I cannot imagine that it is always this bad.

on a positive: my meal was delicious, home fries were seasoned really nicely and not too salty or over-seasoned.

Grounds were beautiful and I would love to have a reason to stay over some day as it is a quaint old-new england establishment with a bakery/store downstairs. I did have fun meandering through the hallways on my way to the bakery.

I would agree with Jonathan R. and give 3.5 stars as well. I was here for two nights for a wedding. My overall impression is that you do have to sacrifice some modern niceties for the colonial feel. If you're cool with that, you might enjoy yourself here, but if you are type of person who wants everything new and fresh and fully functional you might have some issues with this place.

The positives:
Beautiful colonial setting and decor, in particular gorgeous paintings, chandeliers, pottery, needleworks, etc.
Beautiful grounds and a fascinating colonial cemetery next door
Cool independently owned gift shop also next door

The negatives:
Chipping paint in the room I stayed in at the Inn, both in the bedroom and the bathroom
Seriously ancient plumbing
Cold! (windows are old) had to crank up the heat, which was very old school and made tons of noise, constantly waking me up at night.
TV was unplugged when I settled in, had to move dresser to plug it in myself.
Extremely meager continental breakfast. Maybe I just arrived late but tiny little muffins and coffee. Can they at least have some bagels or cereal and maybe some juice or fruit?

I'd recommend coming here and checking out the place for the history and cool colonial atmosphere. Not sure that I would stay here again, however. The worst was the fact that I was continually awakened by the noisy heating system. Also, while I did not have any issues with the staff some of the other people staying with me for the wedding did. In one instance, despite a specific request that an elderly family member's room be ready in advance, it was not.

I also had lunch at the restaurant. It was okay but I would not rave about it. For the price, I found it rather mediocre.

A bundle of ambiance in a quintessential New England setting. My post-Thanksgiving food coma came to a head here. The Lobster Pie was so rich and chock full of lobster that I could barely move from my seat in the warm and cozy main dining room. It's got more lobster than you ever imagined.

The staff was nothing but helpful and charming.  How these people deal with the screaming, squirming kids I saw running around the inn , I don't know. The front desk clerk even offered us the front desk number and said she (and Mapquest) would  help us navigate back to Boston if we got lost along the way.

If you're stuck in traffic getting from I-84 to the Mass Pike, I highly recommend that you head here.

(And don't miss the Bake Shoppe! Everything is homemade and delicious.)

I live in Newton, but my wedding was out in West Brookfield (Salem Cross Inn), so we decided to block off rooms at a hotel in Sturbridge for our guests.  We decided on the Publick House, and it worked out perfectly.

The motor lodge rooms are simple, slightly dated, but clean and comfortable.  The motor lodge is nestled in the woods and feels really cozy.  For breakfast, there are free muffins, rolls, tea, and coffee.

We had our rehearsal dinner at the Publick House, and it was delicious.  Everyone was really impressed.  The pumpkin ravioli was fantastic.  The place is HUGE so we had our own room.

The only downside was that the day after the wedding, a bunch of us wanted to have lunch at the Publick House before going home.  For some reason, they were *really* unpleasant and unaccomodating.  It was really off-putting.  Luckily, after a crock of some of the best french onion soup I've ever had, my anger waned.

FYI -- someone also complained about the poor "continental breakfast"...Publick House does not claim to have a continental breakfast, but they do offer complimentary rolls, muffins, tea, and coffee every morning.

I can only attest to the grounds and the restaurant as I have never stayed at the Inn, but I have eaten at the restaurant many times, including on Thanksgiving.

Very quaint.  Fireplaces.  Wood everything.  Dim lighting.  If you want quintessential New England, this is it!

Meals come with a basket of a variety of freshly baked - still warm - breads, rolls, etc.  The corn bread is especially excellent!

The salmon and turkey dinners are good choices.  The marinated grilled chicken salad is also very good.

Two drawbacks:  The place has wood floors and gets a crowd - it is possible for it to be so loud in the restaurant that you can't hear what the other people at your table are saying.  The food is inconsistent - for example, sometimes the turkey is fantastic and other times it is a bit dried out.  This problem is easily solved - simply fill up on the wonderful breads!  If your meal is delicious and you are full, take some home.

We have been coming to the Publick House for ten years. The food is very traditional in styling, they do wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. The two things not to be missed are their little pecan rolls and their Sunday Brunch. The latter is the primary reason we visit the Publick House every time we take the family to OSV (two or three times a year).

Living on the name....great ambience, food is ok at best.   I would go 3.5 here if Yelp let me.  If you're not from New England and want to experience a New England setting, I would swing by, otherwise been there done that and there are better food options.
