Before pulling up to this range off of 82nd, I had fears. Fears that I would be a scardy cat when it came to shooting a gun for the first time. Fears that the employees and patrons of this range would be mean and uninviting. I'm not a huge supporter of unrestricted gun rights, to put it plainly.

Thankfully, these fears were lame. My shooting party and I were given great instructions and a list of helpful things to keep in mind (such as, "It will be loud.") I even turned out to be a pretty sharp shooter. We were even given used targets shot up by other patrons as a souvenir. (Weird, I know.)

I don't think I'll make going to the PSTC a regular habit, but I'll definitely consider going again. They have free donuts, too!

Here's what the really great and friendly guys and ladies at the Clackamas County Public Safety Training Center Shooting Range taught me and six of my friends this weekend:
- Treat all guns as loaded
- Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to destroy or kill
- Keep your "eyes" and "ears" ON at all times on the range
- Take your finger OFF of the trigger after you've fired a shot
- If a hot shell pops up into your glasses ...or maybe down the front of your shirt, potentially settling in your bra between the girls because your shirt only buttons up so high... go ahead and put DOWN your firearm before attempting to remove the shell.

Just wanted to add that the price of gun rentals has gone up to $8, and they've added a gang of new rental guns.  I believe I saw a Sprinfield XD there last time.  No clue why there's no Beretta 92 there still but, oh well.

Sure, they won't let me shoot my FN Five Seven here, and frankly I think it's ridiculous.  I love it… Read more »

Great shooting range!  Ok, I'll admit it, guns are cool and this place is great for recreational target shooting.

The indoor range is part of the Clackamas County Sheriff range, but it is open to the public.  They offer 10 firing lanes, each 25 yds.  You can fire pistols and even semi automatic rifles.  Day fee is $15 for a non-member.

Safety is top notch here and the range supervisors make sure everyone is acting in a safe manner at all times.  People new to the range must take a quick mandatory safety training/test to learn the rules of the range.

The one downside is that they require clean fire ammunition so if you don't bring your own, be prepared to buy their ammo.  They do stock just about every caliber you might need.  The shop also sells targets and will rent eye and ear protection.  The guys who work there are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Oh yeah!  The best part is the huge armory they have which allows you to rent several different types of guns (for a small fee)...you don't even have to clean them when you are done!

The facility also offers classes (for a fee) to learn how to shoot, for self defense, and for concealed carry.

I have been wanting to go shooting for a long time, as I had purchased a hand gun about 6 years ago and had not fired it in over 4 years. I had pretty much forgotten all there is to know about it since taking the first class many years ago. So I tried to gather a group of girlfriends to go as a fun girls night out. I chose Thursday night for $5 cereal entry. Only one friend was able to come. Oh well, we both needed the practice and not a lot of distraction. The armory guy was super friendly and patient and had a sense of humor. The range guy was big, intimidating, impatient and not very funny when he tried to be.
My gun kept jamming so I went out and rented a Ruger .22. I loved it. I did way better with it than i was doing with my own .22 anyway. I need to buy a new gun.
I'm planning to go back every couple of weeks to try other guns before deciding what to buy. The armory guy gives great suggestions and is super helpful.
Average cost of a visit is about $20 if you are on cereal night and shooting .22 ammo. About $45 if you are on cereal night and shooting a 45. Ammo gets expensive and there are fewer in a box.
Great time and very informative. I think I'll take a class too then get my CWP.
