Holy cheapness!  I am reviewing their yarn selection, because that is all that I shopped.  But I was surprised by the amount of yarns (mainly acrylics for all the snobs out there) and the color options.

They have Lion Brand yarns like Vanna's Choice, Wool Ease Thick and Quick, Fisherman's Wool and others for $2-$3 cheaper than you can find it in the Lion Brand Yarn Studio.  If you're making a blanket or baby stuff, this is a great resource.  You could probably stock up on the yarn for a blanket for half the price you'd find the yarn elsewhere!

    I'll definitely be back.

Tip:  $10 minimum on credit cards, and yarns are cheaper (by 25 or 50 cents) if you pay cash.

Highly irregular hours, a man (owner?) with a distinctive phone who gives earnest yet vague answers to questions, limited range of merchandise (especially in terms of knitting and crochet equipment beyond what it takes to make a baby afghan out of worsted weight acrylic yarn with average sized cheapo needles), shamefully disorganized and fabric section full of gaudy, dusty lengths of crap (though there were some diamonds of lycra in the rough), airheaded cashier (on the particular day I went with a friend - kept overcharging her and hitting her head then making the same mistake on her giant rhinestoned calculator), and haphazard collection of notions rolling all over the damn place.

One good find: a pair of crocheted 100% cotton lace Victorian gloves for 6 bucks. Run, don't walk, if you want the other pair...they may never restock inventory again...

Skip this if you have a serious project or want to make something you will actually use or present to someone you care about. Maybe stop by if you want to show an out-of-towner a paragon of chaos without dragging yourselves all the way to the grubbier corners of the fashion district.

I apologize in advance for a terrible review.

But when the hell is this place ever open? I've trudged down here at least three times, twice in the pouring rain, to find this place closed. Today, I lugged all of my textbooks with me on my trip here, only to find this place closed, YET AGAIN.

I'm sad because the yarn in the display window look so beautiful. Admittedly, I spent about half an hour fawning over a complete set of DPNs in the window and crying on the inside. Argh, I will come back here on Sunday, and hopefully write a better review.

Great store. I am reviewing the notions selection, it's pretty good. I like that the salesperson was a nice little old lady that was really helpful and was patient with me. I would have gave it a five but the man behind the counter was very rude and wasn't helpful as far asking questions concerning sewing needles.

Not the best selection of fabric I've seen - I'd suggest coming here for the yarn and sewing tools instead.

Kind of gruff woman who cuts the fabric, she didn't want to let me see how wide the fabric was and she yelled at me when I asked where the 1.00 muslin was - "NO NO NO ONLY 2.50 NOW YOU WANT IT YOU BUY IT"... Okay, no need to get huffy.  Maybe its the lack of air-conditioning.

The man behind the counter - not exactly endearing, but not the fabric cutter.

Skip it and go to mood.

I haven't shopped here in a while but I have fond memories of this place. Located near Chinatown, it is one of those places that you can dig around and find little surprises. I especially like the downstairs section where they have lots of upholstery fabrics (great for making handbags). Their staff is friendly too. I hope to visit again soon to look for fabric to make a slipcover for my couch :)

I first came here to get materials for a sewing class. I think I spent about half as much as my classmates who went to Mood! The salespeople were helpful when I had a question, and attentive when I needed things cut, but were also content to let me look around at my leisure. Patterns are 50% off if you pay cash, which is a great savings on what can otherwise be an expensive part of any sewing project. Also, they have patterns in a wider range of sizes than some of the other shops in town! Curvy ladies like me can come here and know they'll find a pattern that will result in a garment that actually fits.

I have always found low-priced, high-quality fabric here. There are also some super-cheap remnants! The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because I had a hard time sorting through the bolts of fabric to find what I needed--their organization wasn't immediately intuitive to me--and because they're unfortunately closed on Saturdays. It's tougher to get down here on a weekday. But it's definitely worth it. The store is packed to the brim, and as I eventually discovered, there is something of a method to its madness. Just take the time to walk around. If you don't see what you're looking for immediately, taking a second look will often reap rewards.

I frequent this store as it is one of the few places I know in the city that carries paper patterns. My best experience there was once when I was looking for a specific out of print Vogue pattern and I couldn't remember the exact pattern number. I told the helpful owner that it could be one of two options and he went into the store room to search for me and brought out both options. I was thrilled to purchase the pattern for half what it cost online.

There yarn selection is pretty good, and their notions are comprehensive. They have great deals if you pay cash. Anytime I can't find what I'm looking for the make sure to write the item down.  The only downside is that they close early on Fridays and are closed saturdays.

I came here for some jean alteration tools, tailor chalk and jean thread, and maybe some yarns for crochet, and of course, can't leave here with crochet needles.

Being the beginner of the beginner level of crochet, I was too curious, went around the yarn sections in infinite circles, touched the samples hanged from the shelves again (and again), picked up a 'shinning pink needle' from the wall, and tucked in a big bundle of colorful yarn...until the moment one of the store staff pointed out I should follow the direction on the yarn (it pointed out which typle of needles should be used for this kind of yarn). Oh, the embarrassment, the whole world of 'I will be the best crochet artist there is' crumbled and splashed on the concrete floor.

They also have pattern books/magazines, fabric, accessories items like buttons, zippers, and lace stripes. The price is very reasonable as well. Would definitely go back again.

What an awesome find! I came here looking for notions and not only found the perfect buttons for my current project (on a wall! of boxes and boxes of buttons) but also picked up some yarn on impulse. I've decided to learn to crochet- who knew?

They no longer carry Sugar 'n' Cream yarn, however, which is one of the main reasons I went here. But the rest of their yarn can't be beat- they have from inexpensive to luxurious (with discounts if you're paying cash)

Love this place. Hoping that this crochet adventure turns out well.

You don't go to a place like this for advice on a project. They sell cheap yarn, fabric and notions in Chinatown and they give a discount when you pay with cash. It is what it is, I wouldn't expect top notch service.

I got two brand new Kwik Sew patterns for $4 cheaper than the price at a fabric online store.

They have pattern books in the front and if the pattern is in the book, then ask for the number at the register. and VOILA!

I love this store already, but now I love them even MORE!
Now I can make a dress for my bday....I'm very ambitious.

After dim sum today, of course I decide to walk home and OF COURSE I end up spending all of that extra money (that I had previously saved by going to dim sum and paying $11 for lunch) on a fabric shopping excursion.

Even so, it was worth it! This place is a great downtown find for a huge selection of fabrics and also boasts plenty of trimmings (ribbon, trim, buttons, etc.) to keep you happy.  Their remnants section is also impressive -- 75% off the ticketed price, and they are LARGE remnants -- at least a yard as far as I can tell.

ON TOP OF THAT (this is for you, Madeline!), they carry a ridiculous selection of yarns, with bins upon bins of skeins for your perusal.

Definitely check this place out if you are hunting for fabrics, craftware, trimmings, thread, warehouses, outhouses, henhouses, doghouses, etc.... (j/k about the latter, but you get the picture!).

Big plus: Open on Sundays and accepts credit cards!

This store was a lifesaver when I began my quest of learning how to sew and knit.  They carry cheaper yarns, like Lions Brand and Sugar 'n' Cream.  Since most things in this place are reasonably priced, it was easy to buy a few pairs of bamboo needles, cheap yarn and oodles of fabric.

Don't miss the carvenous basement with more fabric.  All of the heavier fabrics and upholstery stuff can be found here.  The door to the basement is right by the front door.

Warning: don't try to go here on a Saturday.  They are closed Saturdays.

Maybe I've not noticed before, but they have 2 long racks of pre-cut fabric (most 60" wide, some 45" wide) at 75% discount. Some hidden gems are enough for a skirt or even a dress and cost less than $3/yard!

I must reiterate how incredibly convenient it is to have all patterns, fabric, zippers, accessories and tools in one place at very reasonable prices. You get everything you need in one swoop.

Wonderful, if slightly overwhelming, assortments of fabric practically slap you in the face when you walk in. In a good way.

They have it all, from yarn to buttons to zippers of extraordinary length to all sorts of incidentals. I mean all sorts - ribbons, elastics, thread, knitting needles, crochet hooks, trims, edges...I even saw a pair of cuffs for sweatshirts! They have a whole heap of stuff crammed into that store, and don't forget to visit the basement for deals and upholstery fabric! Don't be afraid. You know you want to check it out.

There are also some patterns tucked away, but I did not get a good chance to pour over them.

They have many bins of yarn for poking at, but I was sort of disappointed at the colors and yarn sizes. Good if you need some cheaply priced yarn in any color, but not as good if you are looking for something specific. Come here for the needles and supplies, but be ready to settle/not find the yarn you are specifically looking for.

Do you sometimes want yarn that is NOT made of cashmere, alpaca, merino, and otherwise high-end fibers?? I do! So that's when I head over to P&S. You'll find your usual selection of Red Heart, Caron, Bernat, Sugar N' Cream, Lion Brand, and all those acrylic favorites you've been lusting after. Huge yarn selection!

Great selection of other notions as well! (Does anyone really say "notions" anymore? I didn't think so.)

    The good:

    - Pretty easy to navigate (it looks like they recently reorganized the place)
    - Some good deals on non-fabric supplies (ribbon, elastic, trim, that kind of stuff)
    - Some good deals on fabric, too
    - Nice staff

    The bad:

    - The fabric cutter lady does not speak any English. She knows enough to cut four yards of fabric for you, but don't try to chat her up. I still like her, though--she kind of sounds like the Spanish version of Swan.
    - I could say a few things here about the owner, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

I could have spent a whole day at this store! (But then owner probably would had kicked me out) . I did however spent a close to an hour in the store just browsing the yarn section since thats what I came for, the fabric section would be another day for me.

Lion brand,  Patons, Cascade, Red Heart. .. are just some of these brands you'll find in the yarn section ,  although most of the selection was acrylic (lots of colors for Vanna's choice) I did see some higher end stuff there like cascade Merino, pima cotton and pure wool.  I also loved how they have knitted samples of the yarn next to the bins so you can see the color and feel the softness before you buy it.

I ended up picking up 2 skeins of Lion Brand Fisherman wool and a set of Susan bates needles (couldn't resist they were under $5) everything totaling to be under $20. I loved going to smileys but i can never make it before closing and most of their yarns are hard to find since they've been discontinued so this is my new go-to store for yarn now.

Bring cash! Trust me you'll be surprise how much a couple of cents here and there can save you.

Definately another store to keep in mind if you have a sewing project.  Why?  they do offer affordable fabtric and as with everything: you get what you paid for.  It is not a bargain, but the prices are very reasonable.  The choices are not bad and worth a browse and the fabrics are actually well laid out compared to the fabric store next door.  They either have it or they dont, you are not going to get a headache from having to search for your fabric.  However much things are a 'bargain' you really have to factor your time involved too.  I am not going to spend hours hunting.

They have a 75% off section, but it is more psychological than real 75% off section: more like 20-25% off.  But it is sure a feel ood factor than one for your wallet!

The patterns are either 50% or 20% off with cash payment: good bargain.  They have vogue, kwick sew and butterick patterns. I have bought a couple and they were all in stock.

for notions and trimmings: you can get more competitive prices elsewhere, but if you just want to shop in one place then go for it.   but good place to shop for all your essential sewing tools.  The gingher prices were very copmpetitive.

Helpfulness of staff: they have their on and off days: the lady who cuts the material will not help you carry any fabrc rolls, in fact she will not even call anyone to help you.  she behaves better when the store manager is close by!

I have a love hate relationship with this store. It's the closest place for me to buy yarn, and the prices are decent for cheap, mass-produced brands like Lion Brand, Patons, Red Heart, etc, but I urge shoppers to be alert when they go to pay or return.

One time I was buying a large amount of items, and before I left the counter I noticed a skein of yarn hand gone missing. (At first I wasn't even sure how many I was charged for because the receipt only lists items as "misc", so you can't even tell what is what.) I inquired about it and it was retrieved from behind the counter.

Another time I was returning two unused skeins I'd bought two days earlier and instead of giving me a credit refund when I presented my receipt, I was given cash back. When I looked at what they credited me, one skein was credited for 5 dollars, when in fact it cost 6 dollars. I also was not credited any of the tax I was originally charged, so a 4 dollar skein of yarn ended up costing over 6 dollars. I just went back to look at another return I had made and low and behold, no tax back from that one either. I went back later that day and got back the money I wasn't originally refunded.

I was extremely disappointed by this oversight. I will only buy yarn from here when I know I will not be returning and will be keeping tabs to make sure all my items end up in my bag.

When my budget (and schedule) allows, I'll be headed to another downtown store, Seaport Yarns.

This is a great place esp since we don't have Woolworth's anymore - am I dating myself?  They have everything and don't overcharge.  Need a 27" fuchsia separating zipper?  They might have it.

Location a bit inconvenient and don't forget Jewish orthodox hours and holidays.  If you haven't been there in a while, don't panic like I did when you get to the old location and there's no store.  I needed some clear snaps and had a bit of a hissy fit.  They've moved just across and up the street.

Yes yes yes. I went here yesterday and though it was cramped and messy, I really liked what I found. The cutting lady was cranky, but one of the guys was particularly helpful and I'd feel comfortable getting recommendations for my novice sewing skills.

I even asked a question about the safety of some fabric dye after checking out and with a big line behind me, and he answered my question and didnt make me feel rushed at all.

The remnants were awesome. I think I haven't fully processed the potential here.

I am both an obsessive sewer and knitter and have been going to P&S for years. The store is a treasure trove of fabrics and yarn, as well as notions. You do have to know something about fabrics and yarn to get bargains. Although the prices are fair to low, more or less you do get what you pay for. The staff is friendly and go out of their way to please.

Today was my second time I frequented PS Fabrics.  The first time I went was last week.  My first visit was okay. No one really helped me out so I just browesed myself.  PS Fabrics was recommended to me by The Sewing Studios so I thought it was a good place for a beginner sewer like me to ask questions.  I had forgotten to purchase something last week so I went back today. I needed help so I asked the lady cutting fabric.  She pretty much yelled at me that she was busy and said to look here or here or there, which wasn't helpful.  So I asked the guy by the cash register. I wasn't sure if he owned the place or not. I asked him and he was a lot more hlepful than the lady or at least he did not yell at me. I wasn't sure if he knew what he was talking about so I left the store, pretty unhappy that I wasn't able to get what I needed for my sewing class.  I have yet to find a fabric store in Manhattan with good prices and helpful staff.  PS Fabrics has cheap prices but if the staff is rude, I won't go back there.

2/2 update--yeah...the cheapo susan bates crochet hook i bought was such a piece of plastic crap i had to go back for a metal one (by boye).  but that's a dig on susan bates's crappy hook and not P & S--i still love them.

i went there for a specific purpose--cheap crochet supplies--for that one reason only...and they fit the bill to a tee.  acrylics and blends line the front of the store along with a selection of susan bates and boye knitting needles and hooks by the register and by the thread displays.  you won't find divine inspiration here, but it serves a fantastic utilitarian purpose--stock up on basics.

if you're looking for higher end natural fibers, head to purl, but if you're trying to make good on your new year's resolution to economize where you can, then this is the place.  Crochet hooks under two bucks, most skeins between $3.25-6.99 and a decent color selection.

i really appreciate the fact that there's no duane reade mentality here--i'll charge you an arm and a leg because you have no other options then give you crappy service as your cherry on top.  these guys were affordable, courteous, clean, and i'll definitely be heading back.

    no complaints, only praise.

(one final note...if i had a large project, i'd definitely take the time to head to smiley's, but this was a small project and i needed only 1 skein.)

where has friendly service gone in the city? the last place you'd look, of course-- a relatively small, historical fabric store south of canal.

i only wish i got to see the old store, but i have little to no complaints about the store at its shiny new location. enter into an aisle of sale fabric and remnants, with lion brand and bernat yarns lining the walls. it's not everyone's dream, but i am a born bargain hunter and had to do a double-take to check that i was still only a few blocks from the lower broadway boutiques.

great selection of really cheap sewing patterns from mainstream brands. i never-ever-ever use patterns and they even had me digging through the $1.99 bins. i didn't pick up anything, but still.

next up is the fabrics-- a kinda-organized glom of wool suitings, cotton prints, and novelty fleece. i wasn't impressed by the selection-- but that's just what you get in new york. the stuff they do have is pretty high quality.  i didn't hit the basement, though-- i'm not interested in upholstery fabric. the prices are really how they get ya. i picked up some gorgeous 100% cotton woven prints for $3 yd. try to find that anywhere else in new york. i didn't even have that awkward fabric store moment where you're holding all your fabrics, about to topple over, waiting to find a lady with a pair of scissors and a yardstick. *she* approached *me*... when does that ever happen?

then i scoped out the zippers, trims, and buttons. this place isn't great for that. selection is very small. that being said, if you can find what you want, it'll be cheap. $1 for a 30" invisible zipper? i'm there.

i also picked up some bias tape for $1.75 and tailors chalk for $1.25. these are prices i would expect in the suburbs, but considering the other fabric stores on broadway around here charge twice as much i'd definitely consider this a find. by the way-- great selection of bias tape. i always need matching colors and finally i don't have to pray for a joann's to open up in manhattan.

the best part was checking out. the cashier was very nice, even though at first glance he looked disgruntled and about to fall asleep. he rang me up with a smile and watched me light up as my total ran short of $30.

*that's* what i call a fabric store. i ran into fabric warehouse a block north afterwards and walked out within a few seconds. i'm spoiled now.

    love!!

got 2 yards of fantastic fabric, plus a bag full of notions for less than what 1 yard of so-so fabric would have cost at Mood or B&J yesterday.

between P &S and Belraf, I will never go above Houston for sewing supplies again.

    suck it, Midtown!

Like a Michael's of Jo Ann's in the City.  I've only scratched the surface as I realized - this will take some serious time to comb.  I must know all my crafting options!  But the yarn is at the front.  Normal wools and acrylics for cheap.  CHEAPER if you pay CASH.

This is a huge store with an excellent selection of fabrics for any kind of project. It's industrial and basic in the best possible way. I found a fabulous leopard print upholstery weight fabric that I love. Like Aryn and Allison wrote, they have a lot of what a Michael's or AC Moore would carry--lots of Lion Brand, Sugar n' Cream, Red Heart, etc.; Susan Bates needles and various notions for sewing, knitting, and other crafts. The hours are funky, so call or surf the web.

Dudes, this place is cheap and nonassuming. My favorite bit about P&S Fabrics is the 75% clearance rack where you can get several yards of fabric for less than $5 total, usually. It gives me a chance to experiment with different fabrics without breaking the bank.

I first made the mistake of trekking down to P & S on a Saturday.  Oops.   I knew I should've looked at the yelp page again before going there.  Anyway, on my second trip, I was delighted.  I needed fabric to back a crib quilt for my niece, and found the perfect pink and white flannel as soon as I walked in.  Also, they have a rainbow of embroidery floss colours and I was able to match my fabric perfectly.  The staff was friendly, and the prices were awesome.  The selection was kind of random and eclectic (though it seems like quilt fabric is just hard to find in NY) but I'll definitely be going back for the great prices.

Great source for cheap yarn and stitching materials.  Checked this place out on my lunch break.  They have a good assortment of cheaper yarns like Lion's Brand.  I'll definitely be back to visit.

I had read about several fabric shops in the area, but P&S was nearest to my office, so I stopped in one evening to pick up basic fabric to line a pair of curtains. The shop is relatively roomy (compared to others) with an okay selection. You won't find any of the more contemporary fabrics -- their inventory in general for fabrics and notions is pretty dated. It is also very hard to get to a lot of the fabrics because of how they're arranged and stacked. Some digging was involved, but nothing too inconvenient. They had a good selection of colored broadcloths, but no modern prints (I was also taking notes for a future project). Regardless, my basic chocolate brown cotton fabric was "on sale" for $3.99/yard (a bit more than Midwest prices, but I'm just in denial..). They have a great selection of threads, and I was able to find an exact match. All in all, my project cost just over $30 -- a bit pricey to line a pair of curtains that cost less, but I probably made out overall as they looked so much richer once lined.

The gentleman working was very helpful, but there was also a shorter woman who was sort of horrid. From the way she answered my question (trying to track down someone to cut the fabric), I got the feeling she was hired to stock and maybe not deal with the customers.

I do wish, however, that their hours of business were a bit more user-friendly. I have no issues heading over there during my  lunch hour, but hate to make rushed decisions. They aren't open long enough in the evening to make a thoughtful trip either, and I rarely come into Manhattan on Sunday -- even having Saturday hours would be better than being open Sunday, in my opinion.

I needed to make dance costumes, but wanted to be able to have a good enough selection at a fabric so that I can have more options in terms of price and length availability. I wouldn't say this is the most organized place, but I was able to get a good look/ feel of what was there so I can plot how to proceed on with my little project. In the end, I picked a Patterned Lycra Nylon-ish fabric that cost me only $3.99 per yard (sale), and I got a total of 13 yards.  So I feel like I got a pretty good deal.  And the other fabric stores nearby are pretty cramped.

i went looking for yarn for a scarf for my man and fabric for curtains. i didn't find the materials i was looking for but found tons of other stuff to keep myself busy, and for once in my price range.

the fabric cutter was funny. i requested half a yard, please, and she gave it to me. i heard others say, "you don't sell less than a yard, do you?" and she made a face, so they bought a whole yard...

i have to visit craft stores earlier. i arrived around closing time and was so dazzled i couldn't make up my mind about a damned thing, and they kept telling me to take my time...good service.

but they seemed nervous to say no. that is one area where you have to politely put your foot down. it's a shameful character flaw, but some of us would stay all night unless forced to go! i may disguise myself next time.

tip: select carefully and add up before paying to know where you stand. i believe some items were non-returnable, and the receipt just says miscellaneous, and items aren't marked with prices, so checking it afterward is a hassle. anyway they were busy and a little stressed at the register which i don't blame them for, however, my receipt was accurate. also, call to check hours before making the trip! they told me a later closing time than listed on yelp...and they are closed saturdays...
