I do love me some Provender. Nothing here is bad...nothing! Gourmet sandwiches of all different variety on wonderful homemade bread make Provender a good lunch stop on your way to the beach. And even though they could charge an arm and a leg, they don't...prices are very reasonable. The hard part is in trying to figure out if you want a slice of that dense chocolate cake (so fudgy and rich you can really only eat a sliver at a time) or if you want to go across the street to Gray's for ice cream.

I have the perfect solution: get the whole chocolate cake to go! Then you can have your cake and eat it too....after your ice cream!

Provender has been the go to place in Tiverton Four Corners since I was a kid. The reputation is well deserved!

20 years ago I was in Tiverton RI with my best friend at a Little League game.  For lunch, my friend's mother ventured off and soon returned with what she promised were 'gourmet' sandwiches.

My friend and I both recoiled when we saw alfalfa sprouts and what appeared to be a cranberry sauce. Despite her best intentions, my friend's mom lamely tried to reassure us by pointing the sandwich's tarragon mayo.  I looked at my friend and together we furled our brows and rolled our eyes.

Much to my surprise and delight, it was the best damn sandwich I had ever eaten.  I've been haunted by that damn sandwich ever since!

Last weekend I happened to be in Tiverton for the first time since those adolescent days. I saw the baseball diamond and continued down the road when I stumbled on an adorable storefront celebrating its 25th year in business. This store front featured, of all things, sandwiches.

The mysterious combination of turkey, cranberry sauce, tarragon mayo and alfalfa sprouts that had awakened my palette all those years ago now had a name, the 'Scarlet Letter'. Provender had found a long lost devotee. As I left the storefront, I found myself wearing a smudge of cranberry sauce and tarragon mayo on my cheek with pride.

Yum yum yum yum yum!

Order your fancy, hand-crafted sandwich at the deli window, then just try to pay at the counter without salivating over the many dessert treats and vast cookie variety. I second the comment about the coffee--very good. Honestly, I liked the ice cream at Gray's, but I think the desserts at Provender are better. I mean, who makes pistachio ice cream without chunks of pistachio in it? Come on, Gray's, that's just wrong. (Also, it was November, and our hands kind of went numb as my dad and I passed our pint to and fro, so perhaps my hasty review is unfair.)

This would be my #1 place for a sandwich in all of RI and Southeastern Mass. The Scarlet letter is my absolute favorite. Everything here is amazing...and consitent best of all. The cookies are great. and so is the soup when they have it. The perfect time to come here is on a warm afternoon and you can get your sandwich to go and there is a big patch of grass behind the parking area where you can sprawl out and enjoy your meal. I can not say enough good things about this place.

Nice big sandwiches made with natural ingredients on whole grain breads. Cool, unusual sandwich and soup selections, and the setting is fantastic in a quaint old building. This place is perfect in the summer, and you can get deli items and special culinary stuff to go.
Most importantly, there are the desserts. My only complaint about the desserts is that they all look equally good and I can never decide what to get!! Good coffee, good service, and when you are done, there are a few cute antique stores and shops within walking distance.
