1 review for Prospector Hotel
We stopped in Juneau for a night on our way home from a lovely week in Gustavus. On the advice of a local, I made our reservation at the Prospector, hoping for the best. The rooms looked nice on their website and I opted for a medium-priced room, expecting something along the lines of a Radisson or Courtyard Marriott.
The Prospector is about a 10-15 minute walk from the heart of downtown and the cruise ship dock, so I was excitd to stay there. When our cab rolled up to the hotel, I was disappointed to see that it looked like something straight out of downtown Reno, which I guess kind of sums up Juneau anyhow. Not the ski-lodge, romantic, hearty gold miner architecture I was hoping for.
We checked in and got our key and were told that the elevator didn't got to our floor -we had to use the stairs. No problem, except that our room was on the first floor. Turns out our room was in the basement! We cracked up when we opened our curtains to discover that the window sill was even with the sidewalk and the highway running right outside!
I tried to see about getting a different room but was told everything else was booked solid. The room smelled like cigarettes, which I mentioned to the front desk woman who didn't seem concerned even though we were in a non-smoking room.
We asked for a fan as the room was really stuffy (since we only had half a window!) and was told the only fan in the hotel was being used but we would be put on the waiting list (which was basically a big fat no, since we were only there one night!).
There were also a few dead bugs and a mystery hair in the bathroom!
For $120, I was pretty disappointed, considering that our b&b in gustavus cost the same and provided us with amazing accomodations.
Plus one star for having a minifridge and for letting us store our luggage downstairs before we checked in. I recommend staying elsewhere, but if you can't find elsewhere, the Prospector is at least a decent place to pass out after a night boozing downtown.
