Review Highlights
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Fabulous venue! I hosted my friends birthday party here and it was a great success. Super hot art behind the bar actually sort of looked like the birthday girl so I knew that I had chosen well.
Parking is totally no hassle.
Bartenders are very chill and friendly.
The space is huge and has a lot of potential for holding performance art, visual art and can also be separated into two rooms very easily.
The furniture and decor is mildly upscale without being pretentious and bathrooms are clean.
It was a benefit night for a girl riding the Aids ride and a bunch of DJs donated their time to her cause. This drew in quite a happy crowd for a Thursday night. People were chatting and laughing and dancing with strangers, now that's a good vibe. Wine was around $6 for the cheap glass.
Very close to MUNI 22 bus which is an owl.
This place is prolly gonna boom so catch it while it is still your local hot spot.
I have to admit, I'm not a fan of typical DJ's... too many beats, not enough melody. However, I can overlook any amount of music I don't like for Project One. This is a combination art gallery and DJ lounge done right.
I've been several times now and have found the staff to be very friendly, the drinks delicious and the art intriguing. Plus, the bathrooms are clean. How many nightlife venues truly can say that? I might be tempted to go on weekdays more often than weekends, but I'll be going back. Definitely.
Project One is Potrero Hill's best kept secret.
I used to live in Potrero Hill - a perfect house, a perfect son and a very imperfect person I used to be associated with.
I moved to SOMA and live life. Potrero Hill has redeemed itself to me by means of "Project One".
The first time at Project One was a super fun European venue - the DJ was a German, the crowd was totally Europe - it was like an extended Euro vacation a stone's throw away from my 'hood.
The space is vast, the art gallery and installations were great additions that kept me away from the booze, at least for an hour or so. The staff behind the bar catered to our every whim.
The first time I was with my summer boy and his Euro friends - we had a blast and I totally worked his friends. The longing for him intensified, but my pride got in the way.
Fast forward a week later I brought one of my BFFs to Project One again, the DJ was not as good as the last time, but the rest of the experience - impeccable. Service was consistent and I loved Javier - to the maximum.
Rent out this space for a special venue - it's an understated club, that should not be overstated.
My boy ... oh well, let's see what "domani" unfolds.
Perfect birthday party spot! The green-eyed boy and I scoped out no less than 10 places before deciding this was the ideal venue for my birthday party this year. Chill vibe, no bar minimum, allowed us to bring in appetizers, cool art to check out, and slick downtowmpo beats. Cat the bartender was a doll. Parking is easy on that street. We will definitely hold future parties here!
Can't speak highly enough about the spot. I went for the installation party for Chor Boogie and POW! I was utterly impressed with the crowd of progressives...
I normally frown upon art events in SF, as I see far too many "in the know" types.... The kinda fools to walk up to you and say, "what do you see"?
Strong space with a great owner, however.
We need one in Oakland!
I was at P1 not one, but two times this week! I will echo others by saying that this swanky gallery/lounge is a sexier version of 111 Minna.
During SF Wine Week's Opening Party, about 10 wineries were stationed inside the gallery, so most of the crowd was packed in there. Last night at the Thrillist Anniversary Party, most people were spread out, chillaxin on the chic banquettes while the DJ spun old skool hip hop beats.
While Project One only offers wine, beer and soju cocktails, they offer 2 for 1 beer and cocktails during their happy hour from 4-8pm Tue-Fri. To keep things fresh, the art in the gallery rotates every 2 weeks. The venue is a great spot to host a private party for 250-300 people. Parking is plentiful, but I'm not so sure cabs are super easy to come by out there in the sleepy Design District.
Very excited that this place is right near my house - there are few opportunities to go out and grab a drink right around here. I like the decor, I liked the white sangria (although a little light on the fruit when I was there) and I love the art. A full bar would be much appreciated though...although I know how difficult and expensive that is to obtain.
I'm on their mailing list now, and it seems like they have a lot of events, so clearly they're making a concerted effort to get their name out there and keep people coming in. I don't know how realistic that is, given the location, but I hope they succeed!
Project One is exactly what this corner of San Francisco needed. It's a great, big, wide-open space that's perfect for parties. The bartenders are super friendly (one of them is also super handsome, uhm, for the record).
This is also an excellent venue to show your art. Dino Dinco was on deck the night I went, curated by Brooke Waterhouse. As an artist, I apprecate the smaller room in the front. It provides great lighting for artwork while the rest of the space can have more romantical lighting. So many show spaces turn the lights down low, preventing the art from taking the spotlight.
Project One is sort of the sexy version of 111 Minna. With a warehouse feel, high ceilings, edgy art, a DJ and the ability to hold hundreds of people, it's got all of the elements to be the city's new hip spot. Low lounge seating gives the space some serious sex appeal.
Joe, formerly of Otis, and Brooke have put a lot of tender loving care into the place. They hired a burner to nail bronzed birds all along the walls, maybe a nod to the Mission just next door? Rotating art, currently tiny painted birds by a local graffiti artist, line the walls of the gallery.
Now all they need is their liquor license, and I'll be a believer. Beer and wine just ain't enough for this here aspiring boozer.
This was a cute place... it was all hipster-ish and stuff with all the laid back people wandering around. I like their concept of a dance/whatever club meets art gallery. It gave it a kick back feeling, and it was a cool place for my cousin's birthday.
However, I believe that if you are going to have an establishment like this, you can at least have a liquor license! I mean, they're probably working on that, aren't they? But , still. Really? Really. Yes, it's all fun and games with beer, sake, and wine... and that's all very, very good. But liquor would have really made it all better.
And there were a couple of things I found odd:
- What's up with their bathroom without a door?
- What's up with the viles of sweat collected from someone's lover they called "art?" I shudder at the thought.
- What's up with people going to this place and not dancing at all?
- What's up with them not accepting debit or credit cards?
- What's up with... that?
I don't know how long Project One has been running, but I hope they realize that they need to get certain things going (the liquor license, the ability to keep the stream of alcohol running with a debit card, etc). But all in all... good place to gather with friends and family.
Project One is a very unique space. And me? I like that whole unique "thing". Apparently a renovated furniture showroom, they've done a fantastic job making the place look urban, grungy and hip by using lighting and creative, fun wall art (the bronze birds were a great touch, it inspired me).
Last night was the 1yr anniversary of the website/newsletter Thrillist here in San Francisco (great job guys!), and boy howdy did Project One set the tone for the night. The bar staff was extremely prompt on getting everyone their booze of choice, and the Dj was spinning super hip beats. I really did enjoy myself. Even though some of my compatriots were not fans of the little bird art in the main gallery, I thought they were FREAKING ADORABLE! If I had money, I'd buy a ton of them and decorate my house with random bird paintings. Wait....I sense a theme here. Birds.....AhhhhhIgetitnowduh...
I like the idea of a gallery/bar/club. It's kinda the same model as 111 Minna, but as Nicole G writes, it's the "sexy version". And it's true. Dead, dead sexy. It's too bad it's kinda in the cuts, but hell, I'll rock it if every night there goes as smoothly as last night.
Big ups to the dirty balloon animal man from last night. If you've ever wanted (or didn't want) to know what a "dirty poodle" is, just ask Anna K, as she is the proud new owner of said balloon porn*
*this is the second post in the last week I've mentioned porn, I've got to get my mind out of the gutter....
Thank you, Thrillist. Were it not for you throwing your 1st anniversary party here, I never woulda happened upon this bitchin' venue.* Well done, Nick E. and all your cohorts, y'all really threw a killer shindig. Project One is the ideal place to hold a large event, conducive to all kinds of people: your boozebags are happy with the well-stocked bar, your movers-and-shakers can get loose on the dance floor, and your artsy-types can try to explain to me why a 2"x2" painting of a cartoon bird replicated 50 times around a gallery with variations such as, oh, turning it 90 degrees really gives it a whole new meaning. Would definitely go back for another event- possibly an Elite event, hint hint nudge nudge know what I mean?
*Also, I wouldn't be the proud owner of a naughty balloon poodle (careful, he's a humper).
This was a great place for the Thrillist 1 year party. It was al so hosted by Jameson Irish Whiskey. You were handed a blinking green shot glass full, with neck band, by a smiling lady who had the...Get slammed please, look on her face.
The space here is BIG, very open yet feels nice and cozy, in a way. Veronica G and I grabbed a seat on the round couch and started our flow of libation. About 20 mins in, a very nice guy came by, popped open a bottle of said libation and glass's, smiled, and told us to enjoy our night. I love him. I left with new friends in the phone, and seeing Jessica T and Connie C was cute as ever. They also had a balloon guy out side, who was making a dirty poodle for a fellow Yelper. God bless us, she gave me the idea for MY dirty Penguin. Hes good...see pics.
The night was great, but I did have ONE lil "incident". A VERY drunk, and mom like( she looked to be in her 50's), plopped down next to me, Veronica was getting drinks, and put her hand, on my inner thigh, and ran it up to my kibbles and bits. I have NEVER been felt up by a woman who's just shy of being my mothers age.... I still give this 5 stars, I can now check the, felt up by old lady, off the list.
Yeah, big ups to my boy Nick and crew for throwing a killer party last night celebrating Thrillist SF's one year anniversary. Another shout out to Jameson Whiskey, for making my Wednesday a little less productive.
Project One is a sexy little space and a great idea. An art gallery/club/bar all rolled into one. I had to wonder though last night, as I sipped Jami and ginger with my Mom (yes, its true, I was clubbing with my Mom), will people flock to this part of town to go clubbing/sipping/art gallery perusing?
I guess if the beats are knocking, the crowd is young and beautiful, and the drinks are as plentiful as they were last night... then the answer is yes.
Project One --a groovy, snappy space that exudes class, sexiness and inspiration without intimidation.
If you know me or read my reviews, you know that I'm more of a "bar babe". I like my bars like I like my men-down to earth, full of personality, relaxed, maybe a little questionable/scruffy/rough around the edges/ a certain quirkiness if you will. I'm not too keen on people or places being too "done" you know? It seems either pretentious or artificial. I'll admit I was up in the air about trading my comfy kicks, jeans and sweatshirt for a dress and heeled boots before heading over here but after coming here I'm so glad I got my happy butt off the bar stool and gussied up. Yes, it was worth it.
Ok so the whole bar and DJ with a dash of art gallery has been done quite a few times in SF (hello 111 Minna, Space Gallery, etc). Project One kicks it up a notch utilizing the 3000+sq. feet inside to create both a gallery to peruse/make a purchase in and a banquette area/dance floor to get your groove on. The dark lighting and high ceilings blend well with DJ beats and add to that sexy feel everyone's mentioned in their reviews. The bar itself is good sized and if the staff on Tuesday was an indication their hired talent, they will be more than capable of dealing with a wild pack of hipsters on a Saturday night. It's located in the Design District in Potrero Hill with plenty of parking nearby but be warned if you aren't familiar with this area. Do NOT use Google Maps. They will take you to an area that doesn't really exist. Instead go up 16th to Rhode Island. Much much easier--trust.
As of me writing this, Project One only serves wine, beer and soju on a consistant basis. I have a feeling this will change though (particularly after seeing everyone happily consuming their Jameson drinks at this last party). BTW, to the guy who came by and gave us a full bottle of Jameson, did my alcohol fairy* tell you I was there? How else would you know that I love Jameson and had only moments before uttered the words "I don't want to wait in line again, so this might be my last drink". Because of you Mr. Bar Man, I was one inebriated social butterfly eagerly pouring out the Jameson simultaneuosly letting me relive my clubbing days of the past and ensuring that cructial hangover in the morning. Thank you very much but I will have to say that even without this little kick down, I had a blast and would still given you the proper star rating you deserve.
My alcohol fairy*--no this is not a cute nickname for my favorite gay bartender; my alcohol fairy is like a guardian angel except instead of ensuring my safety he/she also likes to make sure that I get my drink on. Seriously, just come out with me one night or ask John H. The strangest things happen that result in free/ cheap booze.
This place is pretty amazing. Every month there is an event called Africa Rising at this place. The theme is Music. Fashion. Art.
I love events like this - they really are rare in the bay area. I love when unique venues like this can support local artists. There are like four major areas to the lounge/gallery: a back area with 2 sections for displaying art or having a fashion show. There is another for the bar that in large and goes all across the wall. Then the very large dance floor. There is a white lounge like couch seating outling the dance area along the wall - nice when you can sit a drink down and still watch it from the floor.
Last month's Africa Rising event was a resounding success and featured on San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Bay Guardian and on TV and Radio. Please join us Saturday, March 28th for another exciting night for live Dj music and a Trunk Show/Sample Sale!
In fact, there is another one coming up this week (3/28)- check it out!

I literally work around the corner from this place and was initially excited about this new and unheard of venue/gallery in the neighborhood.. that is, until I saw a flier for what probably ended up being one of the biggest Filipino ultra cool hip-hop gatherings of 2008. I won't name drop, but basically the yelp photo entitled "the crowd :) 12/20" pretty much sums up what I'm referring to.
My BF's good friend just so happened to be playing some live saxophone over crazy electro beats one night, so we decided to pop in and say "Hi". Caught a glimpse of Chor Boogie's "Romanticism" exhibit, which is amazing, to say the least, and threw back a few $5 Red Stripes in the spacious, yet mundane looking space.
Maybe I'm just a party pooper these days, but I seem to have a problem with certain crowds of people.. especially, those who are well into their mid-twenties, if not much older, acting a fool as if they were 18 all over again. I don't know.. the crowd was just really strange on this particular night.. a cross between Dave Chapelle and Morpheus with the long trench, shades, and all.. a dead on look-a-like of McNulty (if you watch The Wire on HBO, you know what I speak of).. a group of broady's huddled together, sipping on vino with uncomfortable and awkward looks on their faces.. maybe I came on a bad night?
The place itself as a gallery is great.. as a "nightclub", ehhhh.. I think I could do without. Another downfall is that they don't have a full bar.. only soju concoctions, beer and vino.. guess it's pretty tough these days to obtain a liquor license.
I'm not gonna lie.. I probably will end up coming back for some Happy Hour shenanigans or another exhibit.
Generally not my scene but had fun anyway!! Crowd's more "urban", self proclaimed hiphop heads, styled in flannels (what's hot right now) and stussy gear.
So after a long cab ride around town, we all ended up here. We were suppose to go clubbing but instead we met up with some old friends. We were told there was no dress code and cover is $5.
No dress code? YIKES - we were overly dressed but went anyway.
Project One is this little hole in the way gallery/venue area. In the middle of nothing special, cover was $15 (since we weren't on the list) BUT it included 2 free drink passes.
The place isn't that big but definitely utilized its space; there is a cute little art gallery to the right and a bar to the left. The bar mainly had soju/sake drinks and wine/champagne. The pink lemonade soju drink was sort of gross:( We managed to find the liquor and scored 2 free shots of grey goose with our passes:)
There was so coat check (burn) but we asked the bartender to watch our things. He was awesome! He ended up getting on his makeshift bar and pouring champagne in people's mouths...guess who came back for seconds?!
Music was all hiphop to the old beats (Michael Jackson) to the newer stuff (Kanye). The crowd was groovin' to the beats and although some seemed a bit too cool for school, most of the crowd was all smiles and having fun :)!
Me and my husband have thrown two parties here and we're certainly not done yet...They are AMAZING, easy to work with, dedicated, they will try to help in every possible way plus it is an awesome space with easy parking people.
Joseph Latimore is the best!
Book this place for your party, you will not regret it! ALL of my friends LOVE it!
Wide open floor plan, interesting graffiti art on the walls, and a DJ filling the room with beats. I came here during the San Francisco Wine Week Opening Party. The room off the front entrance was filled with tons of people tasting wines from places like Roshambo (http://www.roshambowin...) and and Ehret Family Winery. Everyone was really friendly and enjoying the new atmosphere and great samples.
The space itself only serves wine and beer, but has room to dance and a great series of art pieces behind the bar to gaze at while waiting for a drink.
Swirl here, taste there, I went here for SF wine week and the flavors were all there. A mix of people from the "I am a superior wine taster" to your two buck chuck and box wine expert, "Quantity over quality". There was a taste for most pallets.
When entering you have a choice between the darkside or the light. The path of light leads you to the gallery space was nice, but got a tad warm with all the lights. The dark, you'll be escorted by the bar tempting you with spirits that could lead you either way. The lounge is dark with nice couches which again can lead you into many directions.
Which path will you take?
I really liked this venue. I went here yesterday for the Economics and Art event. The art was interesting, the bartenders were nice, and the atmosphere was chic without having too much attitude. I would definitely go back to this place.
I went to the opening night party at Project One on Saturday. The lounge used to be one of those "trade only" furniture showrooms so the space has amazingly high ceilings and a nice flow.
Project One is not a new concept, rotating art gallery and bar, but they do it well. They have a good selection of beers (I like any place where I can get a Guinness, Stella and Hoegaarden) and wines.
The art is quite cool. I was quite taken by some of the black and white photographs of Grand Master Flash, M.I.A., and the like. I can't remember who the artist was (I wonder it has anything to do with the multiple beers?).
Joe, the owner/manager, is the sweetest guy around. He makes everyone feel like an old friend. You can tell that he has put a lot of effort and care into this space. He has created a vibe that is cool without being slick and comfy without being divey.
I can't wait to see the next round of exhibits. I hope he makes an effort to incorporate some local artists into the installations.
Bonus: It is located in the design district of Potrero Hill which makes for easy parking at night!
This place definitely has a lot of potential as a neighborhood happy hour spot. But I'm kind of glad it hasn't blown up yet. I went here for happy hour after work last Friday and was very pleased that not only was I not yelling and/or straining to hear during group conversation but you could also do cartwheels, probably even some floor exercises too. I jest, but really - we were only 6 of maybe 15 people there. And the space was enormous. They only serve beer, wine, and soju cocktails - be sure to have their white wine sangria.
The art gallery was an added bonus. The best part was that they had a free-standing, very large, gold picture frame in there. A fun place to get rid of your camera shy-ness, after a few drinks.
Thanks Project One/Joe for accommodating my birthday party on December 9th...we all had a great time and enjoyed Chor Boogie's exhibit.
Bringing on my request for Tiger Beer was a huge plus and I will be visiting again VERY soon!
Looking forward to future exhibits and checking it out on a Fri or Sat night with some booty shakin and strawberry sangria in hand.
reviews are right, they have hot bartenders.
the night i went, not many people showed up and it felt a bit weak paying $10 cover for an empty place.
beers were $5 and my friend's glass of pinot noir was $12. just a beer and wine license here so no cocktails.
this space is really nice though, i'm sure i'll be back. plenty of parking, cool decor, and a decent sound system.
I went here for a friend's birthday, which was fine, but the venue was pretty whack. The artwork (just for that night) wasn't very appealing and looked like something I could whip up better by myself in like 5 minutes. Other than that, the people there were not very fascinating (seems like a bunch of urban hipsters) and the people throwing the party were irrational for charging $10 for a shitty dj and a sparse crowd. All in all, I didn't care much for this establishment.
this place was so much fun. we got here kinda early for a friend's birthday so it wasn't packed or anything yet, which was nice. it gave us some time to walk around and look at the art. some folks we knew were throwing the event so cover was $5. not bad at all. the art that was up was amaaaazing. the little tiny bird canvases were SO CUTE. i wanted to take one home. haha.
anyway. the venue itself is nice. the bar isn't a full bar yet, so i believe it's all just wine, soju cocktails and beer that they offer. buuuuut on this night they did have a table with some bottles of patron/grey goose/jack daniels/henn, and if you bought a drink ticket you could get some shots. i don't know how it works really, but the owner did tell me they'll have a full bar eventually. i told him i'm soo having my birthday here. bet on that. haha. it's in october so it's kinda far.. but i liked the venue that much that i'm planning 10 months ahead.
and the music! ahhh the music was crackin. they didn't play return of the mack (my favorite song EVER) like i requested, but that's okay because everything they did play was pretty on point. from michael jackson to tupac to some top 40 stuff.. it was good times on the dance floor.
and there were free candy canes. and free shirt/hat giveaways. whaaat. i swooped on several of each with my ninja-like skills.
and parking was easy. lots of it available and you don't walk away from your car feeling like it's gonna get jacked. nice.
hella fun.
On the night I came, there was a dancer in some of sort of bikini spinning a hula hoop around the whole night ... I think that tells you a lot about what this place is like. House/trance/something music. I actually liked the art that was on display quite a bit. And I do like the space / layout of the main dance room, mostly that there was quite a bit of space to roam.
Went to P1's holiday party last night for the first time. I was happy to discover that yeah, it's kind of like a sexier version of 111! Really happy I decided to wear the little black dress and heels over jeans because the crowd looked really good. I was there from 10:30 -1:30 and D-Tek (the DJ) had me dancing almost non-stop. The space itself is really well thought out, with separate areas for the gallery, bar, and dance area. The staff was all really friendly so it seemed more that I was at a house party than a club. This place is going to catch on big-time, and with 3000 sq ft, I think this will be a major scene in SF.
This place is AWESOME! Great vibe, awesome art, very cool people. Love it, love it, love it. Will be back again and again!!!!!!
Oh Joe - from the EC to the WC (and then some), welcome back ;)
project one one of the best lounges / galleries in san francisco
Great Sound
That's my boy Joe Lat's sh*t, so you know it's going to be home grown and sexy.
Don't make me have to come get you and take you down there...
Peep game.
Project one is a great place to see great art while enjoying a glass of your favorite beverage and listening to some cool grooves. Brooke Waterhouse and Joe Latimore have done a great job with this new idea of a lounge/ gallery. I really enjoy the energy of the people and the architecture. The artists they showcase are fantastic likewise with the drink menu, also the music is some of the best in the city. Come and see for yourself.
I will definitely be back to Project One. The layout is original with a separate gallery area and lounge area, it's a lot bigger than one would expect. I could see going there for happy hour, some late night dancing (the DJ was awesome) or even throwing an event. The Owners did an excellent job of creating a truly unique space.
This hip new gallery/lounge is my new favorite place in Soma. The art is good and the they have really good sake
