Review from Sajid Z.
Bronx, NY
Been here twice. I enjoyed it both times immensely. The live music (good music) coupled with STRONG drinks and a good meal really makes this a place to keep coming back to. Due to the fact that it's on the Westside of Manhattan- I do not get a chance to come here as often I as I'd like to. Nonetheless, the service is always awesome. The music, loud and live. The crowd- just wonderful. I love that it's dark in there and the food is good.
I will say- as I've said before- they do not rip you off on the alcohol. My friends enjoyed it (one of them came here first with me) and the other had no problems.
The people around us were all having a good time and it just felt good. Oh! And a place like this COULD charge a cover but there was none on a Thursday night. I didn't encounter one on Sunday either. I enjoy this place and the decor.
5/5 for the Experience
4/5 for the Price
4/5 for the Meal
5/5 for the Drinks
5/5 for the Atmosphere
I recommend this place. I discovered it off of a friend who checked in here over a year ago and then groupon had a special and I am glad I was curious to check it out. -
Review from Annie S.
Met some friends here recently after bar hopping all over the city. Normally I shy away from making the trek to the UWS, but I figured why not.
I really liked the concept of the bar -- sort of intimate, but still has a collegey-fun feeling without being fratty. They also had a fantastic cover band. The band played selections from the 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's and absolutely killed with their rendition of Toto's 'Africa'. I was a fan.
I was already pretty drunk when I got here, but I remember the drinks being good -- not sure of prices, however.
The big downside to this bar, like everyone else has said, is the over-crowdedness. They need to learn to start turning people away sooner. There was a line down the street after 11:15 or so and one of our friends bailed in leui of waiting (I don't blame him). The smallish space and tons of people make it hard to stay together with your friends or move to the music. There is a loungey area in the back, but it's filled with couples on the verge of making out. Completely different vibe from the front.
Not too disappointed this is so far away, but I think I need to find out where that band is playing in the future... -

Amherst, MA
Extremely trendy NY crowd (this is not inherently a bad thing, but certainly not what I like). TINY space, making all movement difficult. Great 90s cover band, but I couldn't even bust a move to their music because it was so packed. From the name, I thought it'd be a little more classic.
On the plus side, they give me a relatively heavy pour of bourbon. If you love NYC and follow its trends, you will love this bar. -
Review from Pia V.
The BF and I came here to meet a huge group of friends that had already settled themselves in the backroom. When we first walked in we quickly put our name down for a table and was told it was a 15 minute wait. So we walked around venue, spoke with our friends for a bit and checked back 20 minutes later. We stood around the front area waiting for an employee to ask how much longer the wait was going to be, but all we got was a "we haven't forgotten about you." So we continue to just stand around as we really didn't want to have a drink yet with our empty stomachs. Another 10 minutes pass, still nothing; then after another 15 minutes we started looking for the host to see the wait time once more. When we finally found him we had been waiting an hour and decided it was just time to tell him to cross our names off the "waiting list" (It's in quotations since all he did was remember our names and never actually wrote it down anywhere.).
So we left and ended up at Slightly Oliver an avenue away, but that's a whole 'nother review you can find on my profile ^_-. After grabbing a bite to eat we were forced to come back here as this was where the group of friends had already posted themselves. We made our way back in and stayed in the backroom the entire time. There are about 3 TVs playing sports, a smaller limited bar, a pool table, and plenty of seating/standing room. The venue played some great hip-hop/r&b up until about 10/11pm where the band started and played a variety of genres. Not to mention that their specialty cocktails are pretty great.
In the end we had an enjoyable time but not a great one. The events in the beginning of the night really put a damper on things and tainted my opinion. I do, however, plan on giving this place another shot and hope that things go more according to plan this time. So till then 2 stars ...Listed in: Bottom's up in NYC, shhhhh!

Great bar on the UWS. Overall the people are friendly and on a given weekend night if their is a band playing its a fun scene with nice space in the back to go to if its too loud in the front. For a "fun bar", it also has a nice atmophere - a great place to bring a group of people.

Came here on a friday night and can't tell if this is a restaurant, bar, lounge or club. There were people standing all crowded at the bar and whatever space you could find, tables with people eating dinner and waiters squeezing through the crowds,a lounge area with a private party, loud dancey music, people having dinner, then a live band. Seriously, pick a lane people!
Not a weekend place! -

Let me preface this review by saying this is the second time I went to Prohibition. The first time I went with my boyfriend and we had a lot of fun. It's a great atmosphere and the bands are cool.
Unfortunately, this was not the case last night.
A friend of mine was visiting from out of town, and another local and I took her to Prohibition after raving about it. We had a great time, the drinks were delicious, and our waitress was helpful and timely. At the end of the night, after we'd had our fill of dancing, we decided to go home. My friend had settled her bill earlier on in the evening.
On our way out, my friends and I were stopped by the security guard, who had a question about the bill. At first, my friend thought she had wrote down the wrong number, HOWEVER, the guard had the audacity to tell her that she had not tipped properly. Turning beet red, my friend apologized and quickly tipped some more and we left.
Here is my problem with this scenario.
Tipping is not required of us. It is a COURTESY extended from US, your patrons. Never in my entire life have I been stopped by the staff to demand a "better tip". We had four drinks, and my friend tipped four dollars. A dollar a drink, which I believe is apropos in a bar. Because of your incredibly rude staff, my friend was embarassed beyond belief and was on the verge of tears. You ruined her night, and she felt humiliated by your staff. We left around 11:30 and stood outside of the bar, completely dumbstruck at what had just happened. When I told my boyfriend what had happened afterwards, he said we should have crossed out the tip entirely.
Shame on you, Prohibition. I encourage everyone not to go to this bar because of the incredibly rude treatment my friends and I were given at this establishment. I myself will not be going back, and will choose to give my business to other bars. Horrible, HORRIBLE service! -
Review from Rachel B.
New York, NY
This place thinks a little too highly of itself.
First, they charged me $7 for a Guinness. While that's not absurdly expensive for a pint of Guinness, they definitely did not serve my beer in full pint glass.
Second, when you charge $10 for a chopped salad, I'm going to expect a large portion of fresh vegetables. Unfortunately, they served me a side salad; one I'd expect to get for an extra $3-5 as an addition to my entree.
Finally, when you charge me $12 for a margarita pizza, I'm going to expect a 10-12" pizza with fresh basil - THIS IS NYC. Unfortunately, they served me the personal sized pizza I'd expect from the Pizza Hut at the airport. Not to mention it was overly greasy and there were small unrecognizable chunks of what I assume was basil cooked in.
My fiance and I eat at plenty of NYC pubs. Usually when we split an appetizer and entree, we can't even finish the entire meal. I left here hungry. Thankful I used a Groupon and got most of my meal covered for 1/2 priced. -
Review from John B.
Prohibition is a wretched place. If you assembled a team that included your friend's religious grandmother and the sensitive girl from your ninth grade biology class who crushed on Alanis Morissette to design a "cool bar," they'd do a better job.
It is certainly satisfactory to Columbia University Executive MBA students and Columbia University freshmen. Lunchables are certainly satisfactory to six year olds.
Oh, also. You can't wear "sports caps." Because if you're in this unnervingly urban neighborhood after dark, and have thinning hair, and have a graying beard, you are almost certainly part of the thug demographic that lives to terrorize the Upper West Side after hours.
Good for Kids? Yes. Especially powder blue lion cubs! -
Review from Phil H.
Not a bad bar on the UWS. Been here a few times. Normally a pretty laid back and chill vibe during the day. Outdoor seating in the front to have a few drinks or bite to eat. Decent sliders. Live music nightly with no cover. Kind of a bar / lounge mashup for the decor.
Happy hour is not the greatest but you can get some nice frozen drinks for $5 a pop. Good on a hot lazy day. Beers on tap and in bottles are nothing to write home about. Like I said, not a bad bar, but nothing to really go out of the way for. Ok if you're in this part of the UWS and have nothing better to do. -

New York, NY
Not sure why they have the different reviews. A great local bar for the UWS. Crowd is a little diverse but all like to have fun. Certainly get some of the Columbia University crowd but nothing wrong with that. When they have live music (which they have often), it is a blast! Great band, decent drinks and usual beer selection. They have a pool table in the back and an entire back area so you can go and enjoy some space from the crowded area in the front with the band.
It's not the biggest place period so like every popular bar, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights will get busy. Go early to secure a table with your friends and you'll be just fine. They do serve food but I've always stuck with the liquid diet and the band while I was there. Bar tenders are friendly and respect a good patron. So be a good patron and enjoy Prohibition! -

I definitely need to come back to Prohibition during a live music performance... I heard that the excitement happens then. My roommate and I came for a light dinner (and I wanted a drink) with a Groupon. We walked away very content, but I probably would not come back just for dinner again when there are so many other options in the neighborhood.
For a drink, I ordered the spiked lemonade (I forget the real name), which tasted like a Mike's, only with less alcohol. Downer.
To eat, we shared three appetizers, all of which were awesome! Our waitress even gave us props for our "great meal!" when we ordered.
-Mac and cheese: made with pepper jack for a great kick
-Blackened Shrimp Martini: big spicy shrimp curled around a martini glass full of guacamole (well, it's not actually FULL of guacamole-- they pull that horrible stunt where they put lettuce under the guacamole so you think you have a lot more than you actually have... lame). This was my favorite, even with the unfortunate guac trick.
-Tuna Tacos: they were fine, but I've definitely had better
This is a great place to make a meal out of appetizers! I would probably stick to beer or wine here, though, because of the weak-sauce drink that I got. Good service, nice option to dine outside in the summer... overall a solid 3. -

Came here with a bunch of people. Every guy got a beer, and most of the girls. I, on the other hand, got myself a frozen cosmo. It was pink and looked super tropical and cute. And it was DELICIOUS!
The live music was cool, the band wasn't bad at all, it consisted of 2 brothers. The only problem was that the music was loud and it was impossible to have a conversation if you stood near the band, so we had to move away. Had some pizza here, which was ok.
Definitely will come back for more good drinks though! -

I would come here for the LIVE MUSIC.
I would NOT come here for the pricey, not great mango margarita.
I expected a well blended mango girly drink instead I got frozen syrup on a margartia. They also have a basic menu that also looked pricey but not bad.
I would come here for Happy Hour...perhaps.
Overall classy dive with low lighting consisting of recycled wine bottles with light bulbs inside. Genius! I loved the look and the idea!
It is true about the mature crowd, I would not go eye candy hunting here. But bring your friends or significant other and enjoy the Live Music with NO COVER. I guess this is why it gets crowded? I went at almost closing time on a Sunday night so I didnt have this problem. I would def not come if it was packed...Listed in: Happy Hour/ Watering holes

Review from Ki G.
You should prohibit people from entering your establishment when there is nowhere for them to move. This place was just waiting for the fire marshal to come and kick everyone out.
If you're going to reserve tables for people, make sure you accommodate those who don't have reservations or just want a drink at the bar. That is, if you could fight the douchetastic crowd to get a drink.
I felt sorry for the wait staff who had to deal with irate customers thanks to poor management by their superiors. And I felt sorry for the band coming on to play because they really had no space to play.
And what is this place? A bar? A music venue? A restaurant? Make up your mind.
Blech. -

We went for food after the Black Eyed Peas concert was unexpectedly canceled and everyone was craving dinner. The serving sizes for appetizer dishes were fairly big. our waitress came out with the food and we were all pleasantly surprised, except for my plate! My tuna tacos were extremely GOOD, but NOT close enough to being a meal.
Wait staff was willing to sub in options for my vegetarian friend.
On Thursdays they have bands play, so that was nice. I did feel like they were waiting for us to leave, as we just chilled and waited 15 minutes before paying the bill. -

I feel like I was at two bars in one night...all without leaving my seat.
Came here early during happy hour to kill some time before meeting with some friends. Happy Hour drink prices were decent, but I really enjoyed the tuna tacos and the mac & cheese. The staff were chill, and the place was pretty quiet with some mindless stuff on TV and the back room occupied by a party.
...and then the band came on. Good music, solid alt-rock with some grunge thrown in, but the sudden crush of people and tight acoustics of the place led to me suddenly feeling over it all.
I'll be back for Happy Hour, but not rush hour. -

A lively little place with a nice crowd and live music, but sadly the Radeberger wasn't cold enough.

who doesn't like a bar with live music?? a friend of mine who lives in the uws raves about this place incessantly and comes here ALL the time. so much, that finally while in the neighborhood i decided to check it out. and this made me wish i didn't live crosstown. aside from the fact that they have live music pretty much every night, i love the feel of this place. it's not upscale really, with its distressed wooden floors, and wooden chairs, and pleather olive green bench seats. but the tables are smooth and polished, with tea light candles adorning each table, along those cute little square salt & pepper shakers. more candles speckle the dark wooden room from what look like upside down wine bottles, and there is also seating outdoors on a nice night if you want to get away from the music for some conversation.
it's a great place for a drink even on a casual night, like a tuesday when we came. got here around 1130pm looking for a place to have a nice drink and prohibition was perfect. it's spacious, but feels cozy, and casual but even romantic at the same time. there were a dozen or so people there so it almost felt like a thursday night instead. i had a lager, but i hear their specialty drinks are pretty good, especially the cucumber one my friend also raves on and on about! -

Went here with a friend to grab a drink as it had been recommended to me.
Overall, I really liked it! Drinks were good, there was a live jazz band playing, and there is a back area with a little less noise where people can play pool.
I'll definitely be back! -

I came to Prohibition to become a trendy New Yorker once more after picking pumpkins, riding hayrides, walking through corn mazes and eating at a Taco King at Queens County Farms. It seems that all that soccer mom mayhem left me needing a swanky bar with an intriguing cocktail list real bad.
I had an expectation of stepping inside a UWS speakeasy based solely on their name, but upon drinking and dining, this felt more like an guy's bar with typical fried standards and a slightly expanded booze menu. As for the booze, and I've become quite a connoisseur of THAT lately, the drinks were ok. I first tried the ginger spice- but the promise of jalapeno infused lemongrass syrup was nowhere to be tasted. The flavor was nice though. The jalapeno in the blood orange margarita was stronger, but I've had stronger and tastier. Trust me. We split some fries which were like McDonalds fries- but for $8. Still, I can never say no to McDonalds.
I was pleasantly surprised with the small crowd at 9 pm on a Saturday night- we were seated instantly and had a good two hours until the live band started playing. Thank god because a huge MINUS- the band. WAY too loud and we left immediately. Another MINUS- overeager runners. Runners that watch over your table like bored hawks and want to swipe the plate on your table as fast as humanely possible. We dealt with two that night. It made me anxious to leave food on my plate. The hostess and waitress were nice enough, but as the place started to pack up, their hospitality waned and they seemed eager to leave. It's ok though, because after two hours Prohibition had the same effect on me. -

New York, NY
What keeps this place going is without a doubt the free live music.
The food is ridiculously overpriced, the drinks average, the staff impersonal & pushy and the crowd often pretentious.
I guess with so few good choices in the UWS this place stands up, but unfortunately they don't need to work hard to earn this status.
A real pity. -
Review from Minji K.
Came here for a friend's birthday party and really enjoyed the vibe. The bar was crowded but not overly so - we were still able to find seats to enjoy our drinks/appetizers. Guac was fresh and the chips that came with them were good, and my friends enjoyed their dishes as well (Sombrero salad and steak nachos). I had the agave nectar margarita as per the waitress' recommendation, which was very good. They also had a live band, big plus!

I've been coming here for years so I'm not sure why I haven't reviewed it yet and am surprised by the poor reviews.
I don't think I've ever eaten here but the music and the drinks are consistently great. The bartenders manage to get to you despite it being packed. It's always packed - even in the summer when a chunk of the city goes to the Hampton's which I appreciate. The coverbands play classics from Journey and Bon Jovi (are there actually people that don't like this?! It seems so from the negative comments, nuts). Even though there isn't actually a dance floor everyone manages to dance and literally jump around which I like, but I may be dating myself again (Industry, Island Park in the late 80s, anyone?, anyone?)
As far as a lot of the girls in these reviews saying that the crowd is too mature - just wait til the bloom is off your rose, bitches!
This place never fails. -

If you're into fire hazards and general misery on a Saturday night, then this place is for you.
This place is an utter disaster when live music hits the stage. Management has no interest in limiting to a reasonable capacity, so they let people cram in at their own discretion. The result feels like trying to order $8 beers on a rush hour 4 train. Fun!
Over the last ten or so years this was easily the most miserable experience I've had going out in the city. -

One of my favorite places on the upper west side .I can't resist there spicy grilled shrimps Salad.
Great music, full bar they even have a pool table . If you are looking for an if you want to chill out have few drinks maybe dance a little . And you like the fact that it get crowded u will enjoy prohibition. Great people running the place from owners to staff to the patrons. -
Review from Mercy A.
Fun! Fun! Fun! We loved the live band that was playing the night we went. Great space, large enough to wander and breathe as it is quite crowded in the main room where the band plays. The cocktails are nothing great- just your regular mixed drinks. But grab a beer and get ready to jump around and spin like crazy (that's how most people dance these days) cause it's gonna be a good time.

It was Friday evening. The air was muggy as usual on a summer night. I had been enjoying an evening with more than my usual glass of wine. And somehow I ended up herding a group of my friends to Prohibition.
"They have live music!" I yelled and waved them on down Broadway.
Then we got there, shimmied about, and all of the sudden I found myself standing outside talking at length to a New Jersey Sign Maker more than 40 years my senior....
It was then that I realized in a revelation of sorts, that EVERY time I had been to Prohibition there had been two things: a bad cover band and overaged, overambitious what-do-you-call-a-male-cougar?s.
Not that the UWS has a lot to offer a bunch of 20-somethings out on the town anyway, but there has GOT to be something better than this... -
Review from Laura B.
Really like this place. They do a great job with booking good bands. The drinks are creative and the food is way above bar/club food level. I recently had the grilled shrimp with guac appetizer which was fab. Looking forward to trying karaoke on Wednesday nights.

Here is the deal with this place: Don't take yourself too seriously and you'll have a really good time.
The bands are cheesy, the patrons can be cheesy, some of the servers don't speak English and there are way too many tables on the floor.
Other then that, the drinks are strong and the food is pretty decent.
That being said, I wouldn't come here before 1AM and with less then 5 drinks in me.
So go late, and bring your sense of humor along. -

Whoooo ! I only suggest going to Prohibition if you're drunk enough to dance on a chair to a bad AC/DC cover band and yell Whoooo!
So I had a blast, and boy am I paying for it today.
Bring your drinking hat, your dancin' shoes, and your earplugs.

Self-segregator that I am, I don't often find myself in straight bars, but for some reason I was recently here on a Saturday night. My first thought upon realizing I had to wait behind a rope: "Guh? For this?" Clearly I did not have high-apple-pie-in-the-sky hopes.
So, yeah. It was way crowded. I think I paid around seven dollars for my lite beer, which, no. The clientele was a little fratty-boom-batty for my liking. The cover band was loud and "ironically" (i.e., unironically) toolish. And as much as everybody likes to hear the greatest hits of Ratt...oh wait. Actually that's nobody. Ever. In history.
I wouldn't call it a one-star experience, necessarily. If you're hetero, drunk, and just gotta dance to eighties metal covers, by all means go and rock out. I'll be alone in my room rockin' out with a six-dollar bottle of brut. -

The second I stepped through the door I felt as if I had walked into a live casting for Rock of Love LXXII. This may or may not have had something to do with the 80's cover band... No offense 80's cover band, but you all apparently attract women on the cusp of cougar-dom and tons of Affliction wearin' brahhsss.
I was so underwhelmed my smart a$$ can't even squeeze out another snarky comment. *And yes, I get the hilarity of using "a$$" and "squeeze" in the same sentence. -

For that live band in the UWS move.
The only reason this place has not received less than two stars are for two reasons, the live band, and the pool table. This bar is avoidable at best. The crowd usually sucks and is composed of women that are either far too old for you or far too stuck up to talk to you. The men usually wear the business casual on a Saturday night which is just another of many reasons to hate this place.
The drink prices are average and the place is crowded, so if you are stuck in your apartment contemplating suicide for even living in the UWS, then this place might be worth going to...although those three bottles of aspirin and fifth of liquor are looking like a mighty fine alternative right now.
My advice: find a house party in the UWS and hit that up, or just go somewhere downtown...if you live within walking distance and already have a good looking girl on your shoulder than this might just be the place to go...but I doubt it. -

Stopped in for the first time this past Friday night. Nice place, decent cover band and good crowd. The only negative was the bartenders, who were snooty and seemed more interested in sitting around talking to one another rather than making conversation with patrons or even checking to make sure we had drinks -- and this was early evening, when the place was fairly empty. Oh, and it's a tad on the pricey side for drinks. If you are in the neighborhood, check it out, but don't go out of your way.

One Saturday night, all the other 80-block bars were suspiciously empty and/or lame, so when we saw Prohibiton was packed we had to check it out.
I'd heard rumors of 80s dance night and cover bands and was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by Tom Petty, Rick Springfield and Journey.
I'm easy to please, what can I say.
Beers were a standard $6, and I'm glad my friend and I were able to snatch some bar stools because it was crooowded with drunk kids rocking out to the cover band. You can see how this would be obnoxious, but watching from the sidelines was entertaining and kept us from getting too overheated.
The crowd is pretty standard UWS, but we were hit on by a string of Europeans ... and not the cute "ooo you have an accent!" kind. Sigh.
This is the kind of place you come with a bunch of friends to get really, really drunk and rock out like you're from Jersey. -

This weekend I went to The Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival at the American Museum of Natural History -- I know someone who worked on one of the films there -- and we needed a place to grab a bite before.
This place has a great bar with a pool table, clean and not divey, VERY creative name (or, at least I thought so), very nice wait staff, and decent dinner menu.
I had the Organic Herb Chicken with sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes. Nothing like a good home-style meal to finish off the weekend. They also had Magic Hat #9 -- one of my favorite beers. -

Upper West... I know it's *WAY* above 14th street. I don't even know which trains to take up to these hinterlands!
Truth is I always get lost or some train won't be running.
Went to this place to meet for a friend of a friend's birthday. Yeah it was fun, I mean anytime you're with a group it's fun.
What about the venue? Well we're talking classic rock cover band, but they are live, right?!?! They were pretty good though, just that the music was so cliche 70's 80's.
The place has a main room when you walk in, and then a back area with a pool table. Which was somehow out of service.
I probably wouldn't come back here as it's not really my scene, but you know for what it was it was fine. :-) -

In my yelp profile, I say that when I'm not yelping I'm walking past any bar with a line or a cover. I sadly had to break this rule a couple of weeks ago when 3 of my friends had a combo birthday party at Prohibition.
It was only about five minutes in line, but I felt like I was going against all my principles. Normally waiting in any sort of line would lead to a 1 star review from me, but a couple of things led me to add a star.
1. The area in the back is actually really good for private parties. We had our own bar and plenty of space for 20-30 people. I would never want to go here on a regular night out, but it's good for a party.
2. The cover band playing that night wasn't all that great, but they played Sister Christian. Any band that plays songs from Boogie Nights is ok by me.
Basically, don't go here on a random night but if you're looking to plan a party and can reserve the back room, it's not bad.
