Dear Profiles:

It was great meeting you yesterday, sorry I wasn't that talkative, but it was before 10am - I'm sure you can understand. It saddens me to tell you this, but you've been eliminated from contention for the title of "Marianne's perfect nail salon." I know this must come as a shock, but know that it's not you, it's her. I know that you probably didn't see it coming and feel a little blindsided right now; but know that from the moment my mother crossed your threshold she had one, freshly pedicured foot out the door. Sure, she may visit again for the occasional hook up, but please don't read into it as something more.

I know right now you're thinking I'm paying you lip service with all this "it's not you, it's her" business and trying to figure out where you went wrong - stop, just stop! Know that my mother is on an insatiable quest and sadly you're just another notch on her nail file.

Keep your chin up,

Mary

As long as my mother keeps offering to treat me to mani/pedis I'm going to keep saying yes, I'm no fool!

I will get this out of the way right off the bat, Profiles is more hair salon than nail salon. There are only 2 mani/pedi stations and they're nothing fancy. My mom's nail salon radar fixated on this place when she saw a deal for a $25 mani/pedis on Mondays and Wednesdays.

My mani/pedi was just average, not nearly enough pumicing on the pedicure. According to my mom she got the superstar of the two stylists and I got the B-team, I suppose that's fair she was paying after all. I arrived 5 minutes late and she was already soaking, etc. I estimate I got started a full 15 minutes after her, yet our pedicures were complete at virtually the same time. I definitely got gypped on the the tootsie pampering, she didn't even use the pumice brick or the blade/scraper thingy (that's its technical name), just the enlarged file doodad (technical name) on my feet.

My manicure was ok, I'm sticking with the buff and polish these days. The manicure table I sat at had books, a McDonald's cup and some other non nail-related things on it when I sat down. I guess they don't have to do double duty very often; again, this definitely more a hair place than a nail place. My manicure was just average, I've had better.

Bottom line: Friendly place, good deals, but average mani/pedis.

TIP: The complex lot just west of the salon on Lake has free parking in the commercial spaces.

Is your head stuck in the 80's? Take that floppy mop over to Profiles in River Forest and say goodbye to your mullet forever.  I stopped getting my hair cut for a long time because everytime I would end up looking like my head was attacked by a Flobee. But ever since the fateful day before Thankgiving in 2003, I have been a customer. I'm sure all their styists are top notch but both my mother-in-law and I always go to Sarah. She's the best! They're good about walk-ins, although I do suggest making an appointment because they get busy.  This small, friendly salon also offers other services including nails and waxing.

Did not enjoy my experience. Period. When I came in, I wasn't greeted and felt like I was awkwardly stood there amidst many a stylist and receptionist that did not seem to notice or care about my presence. The man who washed my hair was rough, and the experience was all but pleasant. He told me to lean my head into a plastic bin which was supposedly the sink, and my neck killed leaning against the hard plastic. I had another awkward moment sitting there waiting to be serviced. My friend and I were going there to get the same style, and we both got equally atrocious cuts. There seemed to be no styling involved- Just a blow dry to floof out my hair. Having no where else to go, I went another time to get my hair styled for graduation. I soon realized you had to naturally have long, thick, goddess hair to get a style even slightly appealing, because a girl next to me was getting her hair styled for graduation and seemed to fit that description. Her hair was luscious, and mine.. well.. not. I asked for loose curls and a sideswept bang- that did not happen. The curls were ugly, tight coils and my bangs were just a sliver of hair that was parted to the side. It was overall.. ugly. I do not recommend this salon.
