Categories: Gyms, Swimming Pools [Edit]
63 Funston AvenuePresidio YMCA is the BEST gym in San Francisco. Wonder WHY?
No pretentious gym patrons. Meaning no meatheads to fight with over weight machines or mirror space. No women all done up so they can go "out" to the gym. Just chill, great people looking to work out. But rest assured there is eye candy here, why else is there a bank of MIRRORS in front of the treadmill. It is very awkward to LOOK at yourself when running, look elsewhere!
Plenty of Parking. I almost WANT to park here on a regular basis so I can say there is TONS of free parking. Never, ever had a problem, plus you do not have to PAY *cough* JCC *cough*.
Low Membership Fees. Their memberships are low, much more so when compared to other gyms throughout the City. Pay month-to-month with no worries about some stupid annual contract and low one time membership fee. The biggest contention point with most gyms is this, YMCA makes it easy and they will work with you.
Gym Facilities work well. Just replaced a TON of cardio equipment with your own personal satellite TV, and even internet access on the stationary bikes. All the weight machines are new too. While this place is not as fancy as Crunch or Equinox. You are here to sweat, and these machines do the job. There are TONS of classes, a brand new SPIN only studio with daily classes. And you get access to a pool. Not some two lane sub basement deal. But a BIG pool, with a HOT TUB! That is worth the price of membership right there!

I love this Y. Its definitely the best in the city. It has been remodeled and has all the new and improved fitness machines, TVs on most of the cardio machines, the facility is always clean, the staff is always friendly. You really couldn't ask for a better place to get in shape.
Yeah for the YMCA!
I'm writing this review for the Letterman Pool at the Presidio YMCA. The lap pool is 6 lanes: fast, medium, slow. The front desk person was nice and let me try the place out for 3-days..you can get a 3-day pass coupon thing online here:
http://www.yellowpages...
The pool's temp is great, it keeps you cool throughout your workout. I went after work (from 6-7) and it wasn't crowded. I shared a lane with one other girl and we split it, so it's like I had my own lane the whole time. They have kickboards, pulleys, and buoys for everyone to use. The shower/locker room is like any other gym locker room. Not dirty, but you know..still grosses me out if I'm barefoot. They have soap in the showers, a swimsuit spinning dryer, and hair dryers. Their schedule is pretty flexible, but I would print it out just in case bc I know they have classes in the lap pool every now and then.
This is no Equinox or Bay Club, and that's exactly why I love it.
If you live near the Presidio and are under the age of 25 the membership is completely affordable. Plus it's not a scene -- to be perfectly honest, when I'm sweaty and stinky I'd much rather be working out next to a 50 year old with a beer belly, than a hot 20 something dude with sweet muscles.
Their spin classes are great - especially Andrea on Sundays. She also teaches a Pilates class on Sundays that is the BEST Pilates class (and hardest) I've ever taken. Their Bodyworks classes are kick ass classes too.
Yes it can get a bit crowded during peak 5-7pm hours, but I've never had to wait longer than 10 minutes for a cardio machine. Plus, it forces me to do some weights while I wait, so I really shouldn't complain.
Don't come here for luxurious amenities and pretty people - come here to get a good workout on a wide variety of cardio machines, weights, and classes.
Why the Y?
1) Location - beautiful place to go, conveniently near Sports Basement.
2) Facilities - everything! Basketball, tennis, pool, classes of all kinds, good weights & equipment... I like to mix up my activities and this is just the place.
3) People - staff is super-helpful, and the vibe there is mellow. Less grunting, posturing, make-up and flexing than at many other gyms.
4) Value - financial prudence is SEXY.
If the Presidio Y had squash/racquetball courts, I would demand that Yelp! allow me to give the first-ever 6 star rating.

Having swum in thousands of pools since I was four years of age, the Presidio YMCA has to be one of my favorite pools here in the city.
The temperature of the pool here is cool and crisp unlike the any of the city pools that are kept at ridiculous bathtub temperatures. The lifeguards actually watch the pools here at the YMCA and I didn't see a single band aid or hairball on the bottom of the pool. A great escape from most of the dirty and decrepit pools here in San Francisco.
I have only walked through the gym but noticed the cleanliness and abundance of machines and weights for people to use.

I started coming here after 2+ years of patronizing USF's Koret Center gym. At USF, I grew tired of restricted visit times and dodging water puddles with dirty, rusty lockers in the locker room.
While the Presidio Y is no Sports Club of LA, you also aren't paying for it either. I have no problem finding parking except during those times they hold youth basketball tournaments, love the free towel service and the locker room, while small, is kept clean. I feel like it's a a real neighborhood/community of people whenever I come.
The only other minus is the wait often during the week for equipment, particularly the treadmill. There are a few that can't wait and will stare down those just about to finish. For me, it's much more relaxed and less crowded to go in the mid-to-late afternoon on weekends. During the week I work on the Peninsula and go to a different gym.
Honestly it's overpriced for what it is. I thought it was great at first but realized the classes are really bad, the instructors do not have any enthusiasm. Also between 5-7 pm is a no go, everything is taken.
I thought the towels were a nice plus but they are some funky towels. I sound like a snob but actually I just wasn't totally thrilled also the boiling point is when my ipod was stolen right out of my bag when I was in the shower for 5 min. I think I will find elsewhere and pay the extra money!

I do like the gym and I dig going to the gym, but the Y just went through a remodel.
Fine, we got a bunch of new machines which is a huge plus as I could care less about the classes, yet can we have a bigger floor space? It is true, anytime between 5-7 is a disaster!!! What the FUCK??!!! No machines are available and you have to wait for at least 1/2 and hr. to maybe be able to put your name on the list to use the elliptical. In this instance, why can't we have the huge gyms like LA does, 7000 sq. feet of machines and space. God would that not be great??!!!
And also word to the wise, who ever said is was OK to walk around the locker room w/o thongs on was high. Foot disease much? So gross, but aside from that, this is okay. I know that yes, they support the wee tots, but when there is no parking on a weekday night, that gets real old real quick.
But in the bigger picture this is good gym, fees are not horrible and they do not have an enrollment fee. Works for me

I'll admit it...I am a 24 Hr. member AND a Presidio Y member (long story involving my dad weaseling a family membership for 6 people at 24, for like $.03, way back in 1993). Although I could be frugal and simply go to the Marina 24 Hr, I refuse. That place is a hot mess of douchebags and the most annoying girls on the planet. So I go to the Y. The Y is superior in the following ways:
1- Free towels.
2- Awesome spinning room/classes (nearly died this morning at said class.)
3- Not a scene. As much as I like people casually gawkin' the goods, I don't like it when I'm a sweaty sea-hag.
4- Parking. Nevermind that I live in the Marina, I like being able to drive in the morning, esp. when it is dark.
5- The last time I ran on the treadmill, I completely cheated and was on there for at least 50 min. instead of abiding by the 30 minute limit. Not ONE person said a thing...no annoying glares, taps, etc. Normal people in a town filled with snobs. Love it.
UPDATE- Went to spinning class again on Thursday and the instructor didn't spin w/us?! WTF? Not a fan of the "do as I say, not as I do" school of thought when it comes to classes. One star off for you, Presidio Y.

Let me first say I am not a big fan of going to a gym. I love the outdoors so running/biking/hiking/skiing etc are my gym. But I also like swimming so I needed a pool (bay=brrr!). I tried to go to Korret but the times are not all that convenient and the parking takes longer than my swim. Ditto for the community pools. But the Presidio Y's pool has lapswim almost all day long. And there is ample free parking. And its not that far from home. And thats how i ended up joining.
- The people at the Y are awesome! Sidelined now with an injury that keeps me out of running and all that the great outdoors has to offer means that I'm now at the YMCA gym or pool every day. Some of the folks that work there have literally taken me under their wing offering unsolicited advice on workouts to do during my injury and just plain old putting a smile on my face every time I walk in.
- The pool is great. Its clean. They have a masters class (that i keep meaning to attend) and they have a great hot tub too warm your achy muscles. It gets crowded sometimes and you have to do circle swim, but I guess thats because everyone knows about the awesomeness of the pool.
-They have a variety of classes - spin, pilates etc. - and some outdoor ones too. So far i've liked all the classes i've tried.
-The people who frequent the Y (both pool & gym) are great too. No one is stuffy or trying to show off and some are quite friendly.
Its a good atmosphere to motivate you to keep going back.
I'm currently a member of Cruch (chestnut) and the Y in the Presidio and it's obvious which one wins out. The Y has two basketball gyms, indoor pool, various stretch rooms, spin class, yoga, on and on. It's a bit cramped, like everything in SF, but the free parking nearly gets it 5 stars.
The only reason I continue to have a member ship with Crunch is it's within walking distance of my house so I don't lose out on parking when I leave, and a friend is teaching a jiu jitsu class there currently.
i'm kinda shocked by all of the negative reviews. this place is exactly what it should be--a small, friendly, well-maintained, clean facility. they recently upgraded so most of the cardo equipment has tv--which is awesome because when i go at 7 after the crowds, i can watch access hollywood and not think about work or anything else stressful or boring. the youth basketball tournament madness is kind of irritating, but it IS the YMCA...
i also love that for the most part i don't know anyone there except my roommates and the odd person from high school, and i can sweat and read US weekly uninterrupted. what else is a gym for?
one complaint--kids. they should not be on cardio equipment. they should be out running around, skinning their knees playing freeze tag. they should not be on an elliptical machine. it's against nature's will.

And before I cycled, I swam.
When I was a child the smell of chlorine got me super-excited because I knew there just might be a pool nearby.
In high school I lettered Varsity in swimming my freshman year.
People tell me that I'm a great, nice, affable man; and that I always listen to other people despite their more or less confounding views of discussion.
So what am I trying to say? The YMCA pool nearly gave me a coronary not long ago.
I think the only time you will ever see me lose a wheel is during a free swim at the Y. Not to be arrogant, rude, or elitist, but I swim fast. So when I go to the pool and see a sign on a lane that reads "FAST," I'm going to jump into that one. Because, I swim fast.
Great. Goggles on. Arms stretched, and Gooooooo!
Freestyle until I see a pair of feet kicking in front of me. Hey, that's cool, you are kick boarding. But, you are kickboarding slow, the sign says, "FAST." So I pull back the throttle and wait until we get to the end of the lane. "You can pass me, " she says with the most god-awful rude tone. "Fine!" Swim to the other side, flip turn, come back, pass Bee-Yotch and she starts screaming at me. I stop at the other end, grab the sign and hold it up, point to F-A-S-T. And begin freestyling to the other side. As I pass her I make sure to slap the water with my feet. Screams heard again.
Fuck it.
3 laps at the Y pool. Bite me, paddle kick lady

Overall, I don't find the pool impressive. There is way too much programming at the pool, which leads to crowded lanes or you'll get thrown out in favor of an aerobics class. I found the scheduling varied too much, was inconsistent and, more often than not, you shared a small lane with 4-5 people of varied speeds. I feel like this facility is not for the experienced swimmer. If you're serious about your swimming, avoid this facility at all costs.
The fitness center is decent. However, just like the pool, it's always busy and difficult to put together a quick and effective workout. The facility is small and you're constantly working in with others on machines and free weights.
One positive: monthly dues for those under 25 or those who work/live in Presidio.
I love their Pool. The pools in this city are kinda yuk, but this one is nice! Plus, the lifeguards are hot!
Oh! And they have this cute "Mommy and me" baby swim lessons, sooooooooo cute!!!!
If Im gonna get in the best shape of my life by the time I turn 30 then this place is gonna inspire me to get there. Aaah the fresh eucalyptus air rolling in through the windows, the outdoor fitness classes (is any other gym offering this? I think not!) the funky cardiokickboxing class, attentive yoga instructors and all this in just one month Im already seeing results! I think my favorite part is the sign on the sauna "Please do not wear clothes in the sauna" Ah my home away from home. Feel free to say hi if you see me at the gym

I love it! Been looking for a nice, friendly, not-too-small-not-too-big gym for a long time and I finally found it! I'm one of the lucky people who get to go during the day, so I can't say much about crowds after 6:30pm. But daytime people are all very friendly and easy to chat with. I love the outdoor bootcamp class at 5:45, of course; bodyworks is fun as usual, instructors and class-styles vary - which is good. Haven't been to the aquatics center yet but will soon. What amazes me is the biiiiiiiiig basketball court that's open for everyone most of the time. So much space! You can just grab a ball and off you go. Oh yeah, and there's parking! Plenty, for real, for free.
This is a really good gym; unpretentious, only a handful of meatheads and they're nice meatheads, and it's never too crowd.
The parking situation is great, which, again, is unheard of. Imminently convenient.
According to the pictures attached to many of these reviews, there are a disproportionate number of hot, yelp-ing girls working out at this gym.
Until some of you present yourselves to me, I'm holding onto the 5th star. I'm the fat, balding kid with an Elite Yelper t-shirt on.

Oh, DAMNIT!
I can no longer avoid exercise like the plague.
I'm one of those people that loves to go hiking; I'd hike all the way to British Columbia if I had the time (and the weather). I love going for long walks around the city, even. I regularly walk home from my part-time weekend gig in SOMA to the Inner Richmond. But since I graduated from high school, that's about where I draw the line when it comes to exercise. Because the thought of going to "the gym" quite frankly makes me want to shrivel up and die.
Stairmasters, pilates classes, treadmills, personal trainers... BLECH. Kill me now. Pay money for that? To go sweat, and suffer, in some sterile, smelly meat market surrounded by a bunch of people who don't even look like they need to be there, all checkin' each other out? That's been my experience of "the gym."
But sadly, my experience of my body as I get older has been, "Wow! I don't necessarily look great without trying anymore! I need some freakin' cardio!" And, oh yeah -- I have multiple sclerosis. I need to work on strengthening and toning and balance and all that bullshit a little more than the average person.
So off I went to join the YMCA. With my medical team urging me to get back in the water because of the whole balance thing, I decided to join the Presidio branch. They have a pool, right? AND... They have parking. Those two things alone made it worth it to me.
But after just two visits, I now actually feel like a GYM PERSON. As in, I'm excited to go back. I wanna go back tonight, actually, and I was just there last night. What is going ON with me?
Everyone there is like, normal. They're just normal people. At the gym. Some of them are NOT EVEN BUFF. Or beautiful.
You get free towels. The locker rooms are nice. They'll give you a fitness coach for free. Read: FREE.
The class schedule is amazing, and they have lots of outdoor classes, too, because -- hello! -- it's in the PRESIDIO. You can join the group jogging class, or the Presidio boot camp, or the cycling class. It's like an indoor/outdoor gym! Sah-weet!
I'm so giddy about this -- can you tell?
The aquatics center was great last night. I took the deep-water running class, and somehow left with an exhilarating feeling of having NEARLY drowned, but gotten a great workout at the same time. My doctors would be so proud.
And my employer pays half my dues. I can't promise the same will be true for you, but hell! If they can make me go to the gym, well... I promise you this; that's no small accomplishment.

I love a gym where I can park, get on a piece of equipment without a ridiculous wait, not pay $3 for a gym towel just because I forgot mine, wont make me sign a 3 year contract just to get a reasonable rate, includes use of the tennis courts in the price (which you can also reserve very easily), has a pool and will give me a fitness coach for free. In addition I get a discount just for living in the same neighborhood as my gym.
Minus one star for the huge mirrors on the wall in front of the treadmills and ellipticals....no one wants to see themselves sweat.

Tennis anyone?
I don't like interior of this gym or the pool, too rough around the edges for me, but the Tennis is awesome. They have groups of 10 or so and play at Gorgas courts in the hills of the Presido. The people I have met have been great and it is a good way to brush up your skills and meet new tennis buddies. Go to the YMCA Presido under sports- tennis to sign up!!

Nice staff, free parking, free towels, a variety of classes, good weight equipment, and nice aerobic suite (although a bit crowded at times.) Clientele here isn't looking to pick up (with a few exceptions) and most people who are members are nice but a bit reserved. The trainer Ed here is awesome and knowledgable!
I just moved into the Presidio and realized that memberships only cost $45 if you do which was pretty cool. The gym area has a decent weight room and plenty of machines with no wait at all if you go after 7:30pm. It's clean and everyone keeps to themselves either listening to music or the TV on one of the many cardio machines.
There are free lockers to keep your keys & phone and free towels to. Like everyone else says parking is never an issue. They have a lot of classes and outdoor activities too.
Hey all you ladies at gyms wearing your matching juicy threads, your makeup masterpieces and your messy ponytails (styled for 10 minutes to look like you don't care): gyms are for working out. You are there to sweat, make ridiculous faces, and breath at such an elevated rate that you couldn't flirt with that hot guy next to you even if you tried.
The Presidio Y is the first gym where I can sweat my ass off and not care one crunch what I look like. Maybe it's the addition of grannies and overweight middle aged housewives that bring down that hightened sense of self awareness that rears its ugly head with one step through the gym doors.
Other reasons why I pledge my fitness allegiance to the Y: very cheap and includes the pool facility, a variety of unintimidating exercise classes, free towel service, gorgeous surroundings for that outside trail run, plenty of free parking, and enough cardio machines that waiting is usually not necessary.
Why the Y gets 4 stars instead of 5: the classes get boring after awhile with the same routines- especially kickboxing. The wednesday morning spin instructor sucks. The sunday morning spin instructor kicks my ass- which I know should be a good thing but instead I usually opt out for a large brekkie.

This is, fins-down, the best pool I've seen in the city. The water is a perfect tempature (not bath-tub) and very clean. People seem to do better with figuring out what speed they are (and therefore which lane to swim in) than at other pools, and I've never seen it too crowded during lap swim. My only lament is that I don't live closer to it.

I love this gym. You get a great discount if you live in the Presidio. It is much much much much much better than the Richmond YMCA.
Highly recommended. The equipment is very modern and new. Fun, intensive classes, basketball courts, tennis courts, and includes access to a beautiful pool.
I also really enjoy the location of this YMCA. You can either jog here or drive here. Whatever suits your fancy, you pass by Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field, Exploratorium, old forts, weird houses, and tons of beautiful views of the ocean. Gorgeous location.
This place is not prententious nor too elderly. It's just right for people who want an affordable, non frills, but serious workout.
Oh yeah there's PLENTY of FREE parking too.

I love my gym! it's now been 6 months since i've joined and i've literally never had a complaint about it.
Parking = awesome and no excuse not to go because of weather issues
classes = fantastic - I go to bodyworks, spinning, cardio kickboxing...
cardio availability = never had to wait! i usually get there just before 6 and it's perfect timing
Basically i love my gym and can't wait to do things like aquatics and tennis there too.
There are tv's on the cardio machines and they distract me and my time goes by so quickly.
Did i mention they just did a remodel which vastly improved the stretching room and added a beautiful dedicated spinning studio?
Oh - and free towels.
Plus since i'm under 24 it's only $45 a month!
LOVE IT
Parking is free, it has a pool, the machines aren't crowded with skinny pigeons on their cell phones. And it's low coin, so I'm all good.
There is something for everyone at the Presidio YMCA, from babies to seniors it is more than just a gym it is a community. The staff is great and classes are good. There is a new spinning studio as well as equipment. Parking is readily available with no fee, which is hard to find in San Francisco and makes the gym experience even more relaxing.
I have decided to share this secret gem. Apparently a few other folks are on to it too. This gym is everything a gym should be.
It sports:
Tons of classes.
Nice equipment
Roaming instructors to spot you if you're lifting heavy
An amazing, spacious stretching room to get the kinks out
Tennis courts
TONS of parking
A beautiful, non-skanky indoor pool
An impeccably clean atmosphere
People of ALL ages working out (you go Grandpa! Good for you!)
What it does not have is:
the ohmigod I signed my life away 12 1/2 year non-negotiable contract
disgusting Marina chicks running around in skintight gear
a mad pickup scene
an obscene monthly fee
I love this place. You get to drive thru the presidio to get there. It's a short jog from the Lyon Street Steps. You work out amongst a beautiful eucalyptus grove. For a SoCal girl, this place is heaven. Reminds me of home, in a cosy sort of way. Love it.
Only in the Presidio could you get a cool, low-key gym with friendly staff and chill patrons. Only here can you get fresh air coming in through the open windows and step out to the scent of eucalyptus and views of the bridge, the bay and downtown!
A renovation phase is bringing in new machines and fresh paint. Sure the locker rooms are small-ish, but it's worth it to escape the gym-rat, make-up caked, fashion parade you often find at other places. This place is for real people... and there's a free towel service too!
Now, if only they would leave our new found, and much loved, racquetball court alone!!! Don't take away the racquetball, I mean dodgeball, I mean racquetball... I mean... pretty please??!!!

I am in love with my gym (if humanly possible). It is like one of those relationships that starts out great and keeps getting better. At first I loved the facility.... so, maybe it doesn't blast loud techno music and have a fancy smoothie bar, but it has everything you need for a gym. There aren't people wandering around in $100 gym outfits, hair all done up, and makeup on. This is why I love the Y. It is where you go to work out and maybe even make a couple friends, but it is no trendy pick up joint.
About how it keeps getting better. I was perfectly happy with the facility when I joined but since then they have painted, cleaned the place up, and picked up some fancy new cardio and strength machines. They have even added some of those little flat screen monitors with TV and internet on them.
Great classes, great pool, great location, access to tennis courts, a huge basketball court, and phenomenal trainers. Oh, and $95 for a family membership with pretty much everything included. You can't beat it. I've been a member for two months and have already taken off those "I moved to San Francisco and can't get enough of all of the amazing food" pounds (thanks to the free consultation with a wellness coach... aka free personal training session).

Don't come here. Spend twice as much at 24 Hour instead.
Seriously. Is this place a secret? It's awesome! Parking, plenty of space, recently renovated---there's tons of classes and a pool, and it's all free with membership (which is still about half of 24 Hours' membership). There's even internet and TV on the stationary bikes. Have you ever heard of anything as cool? Also, the little things: free towels and hand sanitizer dispensers on the walls= awesome.
The downside: while it has enough, there's not a ton of free weights, etc. When I got my membership the woman said they were getting more equipment soon.
So yeah. Don't come here.

This is the YMCA I come to on Saturdays. It's a nice YMCA, with a large parking lot, a good number of weights and cardio machines, a basketball court, and a swimming pool (although the pool is in a separate building quite a ways from the main gym).
I'd come to it more often if I worked closer to it, but then again, perhaps it is best that I don't. My husband does work near it, and spends most of his weeknights here, lifting weights, grunting, and sweating with his buddies that he met at this gym. I wouldn't want to intrude on this beautiful display of male bonding.

The best thing about this Y is the aquatic center. 6 lane pool with a separate shallow pool. Lanes are not crowded by ladies walking in the water or kiddy swim lessons. Lanes are divided by pace and rules are very clear to those not used to lap swim. A lifeguard even rearranged a lane to allow me to have a faster work out. Great Master's program offered 2-3x per day.

So, I'm a free loafing, free pass moocher....
My friend is member and I go as his guest to use the pool, well, he isn't always around so I go as his guest without him of course. On the weekends, it's a breeze a sweet little Chinese teenager is all smiles and says "don't worry about it". Technically he is supposed to be here and "technically" you are supposed to pay $13 dollars but, it's ok.
On the weekdays however, it's very different story. James (a stern looking Chinese older gentlemen) looks at me like I'm about to do something wrong. "You are supposed to be here with him and you are supposed to pay $13 dollars"....well, I know but, he is in China and can't be here. "Well that is not my problem that is your problem". True. "Ok, I'll let you in but not because of him and not because of you, I'll just let you try it out for tonight." Thank you James... you are the best!

I just joined, and so far, I love it. The front desk people are nice and welcoming, the new renovations are great, and there's plenty of parking.
A nice all-around facility...maybe not as swanky as the Embarcadero YMCA but it serves the purpose of a health and community center very well. It has a nice location in the Presidio with ample parking in a safe neighborhood. The aquatic center offers many diverse programs from water-running to aerobics throughout the day which occasionally disrupt lap swimming. Lap lanes can get overly crowded at prime-usage times. It can also get loud with swim lessons and the swim team, but the Y is made for kids, isn't it? This Y also offers tennis courts...one benefit other SF YMCAs aren't able to do. Lots of weights, cardio equipment, and anything you'd expect in a gym. Locker rooms are very bare-bones and on the small side.

5 stars because who would've thought that little old me...the one always being poked fun at for being lazy, would like to work out? they have great group workout sessions, and it doesn't have that typical meatmarket gym feel.
