I really love Preet's, as you may be able to tell by the five-star rating. I don't give those out to many restaurants, and Preet's took a while to earn it.  To be honest with you, the first few times I went there, the service was hit and miss, but for the last several months I've found their service to be flawless, and the food is straight-up delicious.

I've never had the buffet, so I can't speak to that, but the regular menu has some truly delicious items.  Most of my friends order the thali when we go, but I am so enamored of the black daal that I almost always order it all by itself.  I like the channa and the aloo gobi a lot as well.  Preet's does vegetarian cuisine in a spicy, flavorful way-- as long as my water glass is kept full, spicy food makes me happy.  I also really appreciate that the entrées aren't swimming in oil and/or grease to the degree that they are at so many Indian restaurants.  Also, I love the little pickles that they serve on the side of each dish-- hooray for tiny pickled vegetable assortment!

The atmosphere is comfortable, warm, and casual.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Redmond.

Will never go there again.  The wait staff took forever to get our order and forever to bring our food out.  Other people came, ordered, ate, and left before we were finished.  When the entrees came out, they didn't bring it with rice or roti, so we had to wait even longer to start eating.

The entrees are too small.  The chai, while good, costs $2 for what seems like 3 ounces, but refills are not included in the price.

This place is not worth going.

We went here on a Saturday and had the lunch buffet and were seated immediately.

Decor - very clean, modern look. I liked their outdoor patio area and would have preferred to sit outside enjoying the wonderful weather we had that day.

Service - pretty decent. Although when I tell a waiter I don't want my water glass filled, I'd expect him to respect my wishes instead of filling it up and saying to me "just in case". Ok.....

Food - $10 for buffet, $3 mango lassi - Not sure the food was worth $10. There wasn't much to choose from and I didn't go back even after an almost empty first plate. But their curry veggie (meatless)balls was really yummy. Mango lassi - meh....too gooey. Didn't taste anything like mango....I dd taste a lot of yogurt, however.

    Overall experience was good.

I was so excited to go here that I actually went to Redmond.

Unfortunately I cannot say that it was worth the drive...to me. Perhaps this is the most authentic Indian food (authentic != good) in all of King County but it just didn't hit the spot for me or my over-ordering dining companion.

Southern Indian food is some of my favorite food on the entire planet. I crave Iddly and Veda dipped in Sambar, sometimes I yell "Dosa, Dosa, Dosa!" until someone agrees to accompany me to the Eastside for my fix, and Gulab Jamun is a dessert that I drool over so imagine my disappointment when they didn't have the first 3 things on the menu and the dosa was really just a bit of flat bread.

The paneer for some reason tasted like hard boiled eggs, the samosas were nothing more than spicy potato fritters with a couple of peas, and the chana, daal, and kofta all had an odd flavor to them (so odd that I was glad we were eating vegetarian because if meat was involved I would have been really suspicious) so it was a good thing that my lassi was tasty and the gulab jamun was good.

The odd atmosphere and the poor service would be forgiven  if I had enjoyed the food, but I left here losing the one reason I ever had to drive to Redmond.

    Preets is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC.

Look, if you want to eat the 'traditional' type of Indian food (Mughal style, which of course is food brought to India by the Mughals, and is really more of a Persian style of cooking rather than Indian, but I digress.....), then head over to Mayuri in Bellevue. They make good Indian. Get your chicken tikka masala there.

But Preets serves no meat and no alcohol for a reason: Many Indians are offended by both. That is changing quickly, but still, many Indians don't want to eat food in a restaurant where there is ANY meat.

Preets food is the most authentic Indian food I have tasted in the Seattle area. Not to pull rank on everyone (opps....I just did....), but I have been to India 4 times (actually leaving in 2 days for my 5th trip as I write this), and my Indian wife and I are in lock step on this one. Preets is the REAL DEAL. Kind of sad reading some of these sorry ass comments about Preets from Americans who don't really know shit about Indian food. GO TO INDIA, then you will understand why this place is packed with Indians, and not Americans.

Their Channa Bhatura....OMFG is it good. So, so good. They have some really nice 'chats' (Indian snack foods, sort of like fast food for Indians) as appetizers. Everything is always fresh and hot. Their roti (bread) is exactly like what you would have in someones home in Northern India.

I noticed that Preets has been offering lunch box service to Microsoft. This is actually a popular way of getting lunch in India. Workers in offices will have their lunches delivered, with armys of delivery folks (dabbawallah) making the rounds bringing in food.

This place is not fancy, and its not cheap. But if you want to taste what its like to eat in someones home in Northern India, then this is the place.

Get a thali (a platter with multiple dishes), and get channa, dal, and perhaps mulai kofta. Not cheap at around $14, but you are truly getting a taste of India.

I would like to add that Preets is consistantly good. We have been going there for years, and they are not just some flash in pan. They are consistantly top notch. The food always comes out hot from the kitchen.

Outstanding food. It is the closest you can get (other than Punjab Sweets) to eating Genuine Parathas(tm) in the Seatlte area.

Things you must try out: Papdi Chat (the best description I've heard is Indian nachos, but that's like equating the Sun to the Moon because they're both round) and Mooli Paratha (bread with radish stuffed in it).

Its a good setting, very reasonably priced and a great place for dinner (or lunch or snacks...)

Their weekend buffet is not so bad for $10. I have been there twice for the buffet and it consisted of 4 vegetable entrees, surprisingly not one was a paneer entree (may be they consider malai kofta as one but it had no cheese in it whatsoever and tasted more like vegetable dumplings). But, it still is more bang for your buck . The food was fresh and hot which is always a good thing. Though Dals and Chana masala tasted of food grade soda which makes you pretty full, pretty quick.

From Preet's website "Love. This is the definition of preet in Punjabi. Preet's was aptly named -- to not only mirror her own feelings of what she strove to offer, but wanted to shout it from the mountain tops: Love. Love for her family, love for her passion, and most importantly the love she wants to share with all of you."

With 2 miserly chapatis, I don't feel that love Preet!

The quality of bread in most Indian restaurants sucks. This is particularly the case for paranthas, the flat pan fried bread from north India. Indeed the situation is so bad that at some places you can't even distinguish between the naan and the parantha.

Fortunately dear reader all is not lost. Preet's is here to save the day. A cozy little Indian restaurant devoted to the fine art of stuffed parantha making. They have it all, from paneer, to cauliflower and from  boiled potatoes to spinach.  A man can only eat so many at a time.

Every single paranthas that I have had was beautifully spiced and cooked just right. It came with some pickle and a bowl of Indian style chunky yogurt. yum.

The rest of the menu is good too. The stuffed baby eggplant is delicious, so is the kadhi pakoda. The malai kofta is nothing to rave about since the kofta was put in the sauce minutes before it was served to you and it barely had any time to become one with the sauce.  The thali is an excellent deal and comes with two very well made rotis, the roasted cousin of the parantha.

So why the four stars? Because their appetizers suck. The aloo tikki is deep fried instead of pan fried, so its more a pakoda than a tikki. This is a grave insult to all tikki lovers and for this Preet's loses a star. The pani puri is too sweet  and I am not a fan of the papdi chat either.

In summary, if you want to eat a parantha or three, Preet's is the place to go.

When I moved to Seattle from the Bay Area, my heart sank with the crap Indian food here - I had to start cooking for myself till I discovered the Punjab Sweet House and its sister concern, Preet's. This is how north indian food is supposed to be : everything is just a-ok.

I typically order the thali with some extra orders of chappatis. With the thali, you can pick your choice of side dishes. Having made my way through  the entire menu several time, I can recommend absolutely everything on it.

Preet's has the best Indian food in Seattle. Period.
The appetizers are great: samosas, pani puri etc. Try the paratha with a side of cauliflower or cottage cheese. For desserts you must have the gulab jamun which is the gold standard or the resmalai.
I would skip the buffet and go a la carte just to try out everything.

This is related to Punjab sweets. My absolute favorite place in all of Seattle (well Kent really). Ok I love Preets but not as much as Punjab sweets because the sweets aren't quiiiite as good (but are close).  This place has a more "restaraunty" feel than Punjab sweets, but the same home cooked taste. I love getting the chaat (appetizer/snacks) which I'd reccomend more than the main dishes. Except the mulai kofta- I love that too. The parathas here are awesome (Indian bread- like a roti but stuffed w/yummy things and well, greasier- YUM). The waitstaff is really nice to us and treats us like family.

Don't forget to try the sweets!!!!!! (To prime yourself for Punjab Sweets).

Dont ever go to this restaurant. If vegetarian food is the only option for you, there are other good veggie restaurants out there.I am really surprised how they have 4star and 5star reviews seriously. We went here along with  another couple who are vegetarians. Considering the fact that we had different options we decide to go with buffet. Even after reading this, you end up there, I beg you not to have their dinner buffet. Its a waste.

First thing when I reached to the buffet counter, I was shocked to see the varieties. The options were very limited. They have 4 kinds of chutney for one appetizer which was dry, cold gobi manchurian. Next in line were 3 different side dishes panner tikka masala, dal makhni, channa masala. Then as for the rice they had only jeera rice. And ya you can have only two chapaties for each person, more than two will cost you extra 50cents. The worst part of this was the dessert. Steamed rice colored yellow and mixed with sugar. That's a joke. The buffet was definitely not worth for 10$. Its not abt the cost. I'm ready to pay even 25$ for a dinner buffet just with 5 items but if the food is good. It was not the case with Preets and I'll never go back again.

Preet's is run by the son of the folks who own Punjab Sweets in Kent, my favorite Indian sweet shop and chaat house in Puget Sound (which I heartily recommend in another review).

I'm giving Preet's a 4-star rating, but with a couple of reservations.  First off, the food is what makes this place.  The appetizers and entrees are a solid 4 stars (maybe 5) IF you consider this place for what it is.  It is a *Northern* Indian (Punjabi to be precise) restaurant, which means that Southern specialties such as dosas and mango chutney are not to be found on the menu.  This place doesn't have typical tandoori or tikka dishes, or "curry," as we know it in the West.  Oh, and as a few people have pointed out, they don't have naan... because you need a tandoori oven for that, and what's the point of having one when you're 100% vegetarian???

In short, if you're measuring this restaurant by what it lacks compared with more common Indian restaurants in the region (e.g. Chutneys, Taste of India, etc.) then Preet's is not going to get a fair shake.  Nor if you're looking for a cheap hole-in-the-wall, which this is not.

What you will find are dishes which are atypical from other Indian restaurants in this area.  And if/when you ever do run into a real-deal Punjabi restaurant elsewhere you'll note that the attention to detail in the recipes and execution at Preet's is a cut above.  (You might think of the former as "soul food" and the latter as what the Kingfish Cafe in Seattle does with soul food.)

The samosas are good, but what makes them great is ordering them as chaat, with all the chaat trimmings such as yogurt, tomato-tamarind sauce, etc.  I can vouch for the papdi chaat as all-around excellent.  Then there are the entrees, such as makki ki roti - mustard greens served with corn rotis (same shape as tortillas, different taste), aloo gobi (potato/califlower) and palak paneer (spinach/ with a light-tasting cheese).  I am also a fan of the rajmah (kidney beans), which are very filling.  Also worth mentioning are the parotha (stuffed chapatis - think wheat tortillas with a little more tooth).  They are well-flavored with several great choices of fillings.  You'll find these served in many Punjabi homes but on few menus in our area.

I have just two reservations about Preet's.  The first is that service is somewhat spotty - our experiences range from 2-4 stars and average a "3".  The second is that the sweets experience does not compare with the Mothership (Punjabi Sweets in Kent).  I understand the sweets come from Kent, but: there is limited selection, they're not flexible on how much you can order (e.g. just a couple of squares of burfi or pieces of jalebi), and they're generally not as fresh.

With those caveats, I like Preet's for its excellent Punjabi fare.  Although service could be improved and the place could stand to be a little more user-friendly to the uninitiated, the food makes up for a lot of little things.  Not to say there aren't other choices out there, but to match food from this region at this level of quality means a visit to Punjab Sweets in Kent.

Indian food for the Microsoftie demographic? Find it at Preet's.

Let's look beyond that, though... Is it good regardless of the fact it seems a bit more Americanized than necessary and you can get twice the food for the same moolah elsewhere? Ya, sure, you betcha.

I've eaten at a number of Indian restaurants in the Seattle area, and never have I seen a menu like they have here. It took me a few minutes of trying to decipher it before I noticed it was totally vegetarian. Lots of paneer and tofu, but not a speck of meat to be found. (Which is fine with me, personally, but if you're not expecting it it's a bit of a jolt.)

The total menu switch-up forced me out of my comfort zone a bit, but I was pleasantly surprised. The entrees all come with a small bowl of tangy plain yogurt which meshed my spicy curry tofu with the rice and roti quite nicely.

It did, however, confuse me as to how to eat the different pieces of the meal. Being as I am from Central Washington and default to Mexican food mode, I dined on curry tofu soft tacos with yogurt.

Service was unobtrusive and friendly, the atmosphere clean, and the damage for 2 people with entrees, a mango lassi each and one shared appetizer was $35. Not unfair at all, but if you're used to paying similar prices for over-sized portions you're going to need to change your perspective. We did have leftovers, but not the giant boxfuls I'm accustomed to packing home after a night at Taste of India.

The salt lassi was good and the appetizers were incredible (best pakora ever and also very good samosa). The entrees were very small for their price, but reasonably tasty. Mooli parantha was less delicious than expected from the other reviews and menu description but still tasty (it was really thin though, so I wonder how the other parantha are).

Next time we'll try the buffet because the food quality looked equal to the menu items but $10 all-you-can-eat is way cheaper than $10-$14 for a tiny portion of entree.

It wasn't BAD, ... but I've DEFINITELY had better.
The menu was FAR too limited, which forced my party to opt for the buffet. The buffet, which consisted of about five entrees, one desert (a sad rice pudding), and a pan of lettuce (by which I mean five wilted leaves of shredded lettuce), left MUCH to be desired.
Hindsight being 20-20, I should have turned around and suggested we go elsewhere, but it was late and we were hungry.

The lentil curry was decent. It was decently spicy, which was appreciated, but it was a tad dried out on the line.
Was no one tending the buffet?

The curry tofu was tasty though.
In fact, MOST of the entrees were good, though the 'meat'balls in the orange curry had a surprising flavor. Not really off-putting but close. It was a familiar taste that I couldn't quite put my finger on.
Carrots were suggested, but I suspect it was some sort of mushroom.

    Not nearly enough Fulka/Roti served.
Four small pieces for a buffet order for two people is not nearly enough.

I was also not impressed with the rice.
Too much of it was dry and crunchy from sitting in the pan. I was finding myself dodging the hard bits on my fork, and picking them out of my teeth. Ugh. Rice is CHEAP and easy to prepare, so there's little excuse for allowing it to dry on the buffet. A quick freshener should have been put out when they seated us.
Perhaps a smaller pan would have helped. :-\

Granted we arrived about 30 minutes before closing, but even customers arriving close to closing should be planned for. That is to say, the quality of the food shouldn't decrease just because it's about a half an hour to quitting time.

Plus, while they said they "didn't mean to rush us", asking us if we wanted any more food, or if they could clear the buffet, after each trip to the buffet IS rushing. :-\

Preet is a step up from your average Indian restaurant.  It's not a buffet and is as hip as an Indian restaurant in Redmond can get.  The food is delicious though every time I go I realize I have no idea what anything is save for the samosas.

Every time I go I get the impression this is a popular hangout for successful Indians from the Microsoft milieu.  I'm almost always the only non-Indian person there and I'm always overhearing MS-speak.  If you are a successful Microsoftie and are wondering what your wife and money are doing at 2 PM on a given weekday, start at Preet.  While you are there, order a bit of extra roti to soak up the delicious food.

This is vegetarian Indian food cooked by and served to you by an Indian mother.

If you've been to the average Indian restaurant in the Seattle/Redmond area, you will be confused by Preet's menu because it shares little to nothing in common with them. There is no Butter Chicken (or any chicken) here, and no Tandoori! This is highly regional cuisine, not the Mughal style Indian that most restaurants serve.

But I think it's safe to say that this is the most authentic Indian of its type that I've found in the area. Start with an appetizer sampler, and notice how perfectly cooked the Samosas are. They're the best Samosas I've ever personally had. Then move on to any of their main courses -- or bring a group of friends and try all of them, since there are usually only six or seven on the menu. My go-to dish is the chickpeas, but I've also really enjoyed their Cauliflouer+Tofu and their spinach and mixed greens.

Definitely my favorite Indian restaurant in the area!

I always assumed Redmond was nothing more than tasteless sprawl.  Fortunately my friend showed me there are a few gems, especially when it comes to Indian food.  I ordered the combination plate (the name of which I am now spacing on) primarily to try three different items.  I enjoyed 2 of the 3 to be exceptional but found the saag paneer to be excessively salty.  I had to dilute it with plenty of rice.

I would definitely eat here again on my next trip to the area...

Since there are many, MANY far superior Indian restaurants near by, this one isn't worth it!

The food was spiced all wrong. It tasted like someone dumped an entire bottle of cayenne onto my small dish and both my and my husbands dishes were gritty and inedible (and we both enjoy spicy food... spicy food that is spiced properly).

I would say only go here if you enjoy cracking open a bottle of spices and eating it with a spoon as a snack. For me, not so much.

Some of the stuff is pretty unique and good here. E.g. Indian junk food called chaat, which is a category rather than a dish. Try papdi-chaat, or bhel puri. Not great but passable. Btw, disappointed that this place does not do stuffed parathas well enough, that being a Punjabi forte. If you think the parathas here are great, ahem, let me say you need to have better ;)

Service is sketchy at best. This is a Punjabi restaurant so don't look for South-Indian stuff here :D Look up the India states to see why.

Overall good unique Indian experience, away from the staple curries. Expensive for what you get though.

I have no idea why this place is rated so highly?  Try any other veggie Indian place in Seattle and you'll find it has a LOT more flavor, a LOT more substance, and a lot less pricey.

It's not bad, it's a cute place, with cute little dishes, but it's overrated, for sure.  I always leave not remembering what I had, which is usually never the case with Indian food!

Even the mango lassi was eh.

My Indian friend took me here because he said it was the very best.. and of course, I LOVE Indian food.  It's vegetarian and the place looks pretty modern (not traditionally decorated Indian restaurant).

Within minutes of being seated, the place filled up to max capacity.  This was on a Monday night so I was surprised.

I ordered a mango lassi (pretty good.. standard though).  The entire menu is vegetarian though.  We got the sampler appetizer which has four different things.  Unfortunately, there was only one of each item (with the exception of the potato thingy).  I was a little surprised how small the quantity was for $8.

I tried the combo as well for dinner.  The ingredients are indeed fresh.  I really enjoyed the chickpeas and kidney beans dish... but I really wasn't too impressed with the aloo gobi (curried cauliflower potato) or the Indian bread that came with it.  So not everything is good.. even if it is authentic.  The same complaint though.. the dishes were way too small for $16.  My friend only got one of the dishes and it was just a little bigger than mine.  That was $8.

So my two complaints:  First, the place is kind of far from people who don't live near Redmond.  Second, the place is kind of pricey for vegetarian food considering how much you get.

I didn't really enjoy my visit to Preets and probably won't be going back. The main problem for me - there was a type of dairy in almost every dish - milk, butter, cheese.I found a few things I could eat..and they were so so but I didn't much like the taste.

My waiter was excellent though - he exuded the "This is a high class restaurant" behavior even though he was in a one room box with some tables.

Service and ambiance were fabulous, but the real treat was the food. I won't go to Redmond every time I want Indian, but this place suits my taste better than anything else I've found on the West side of Lake Washington lately.

First the caveats: it's all vegetarian, and it's rather pricey. That said, it's delightfully light on the grease and full of flavor with just the right amount of heat to complement. Loved the roti, yogurt, and pickled carrots that came with all dishes. The baigan was unique - not like I'm used to, but really delicious. Definitely worth a trip back when I'm in the area.

II am not a vegetarian but I like vegetarian Indian food.
I took a Korean friend to this restaurant for his very first taste of Punjabi style Indian
food, which he said he liked very much.
We each had an appetizer sampler plate, which consisted of one each of aloo tikki, samosa, paneer pakora, and two vegetable pakoray. Despite being deep fried, the appetizers were not greasy, but rather were well prepared and well seasoned with tasty spices.
We ended up sharing one entree only, which was the Thali, a sample of three items of your choice. We picked the suggested Tofu, Aloo gobi (curried cauliflower and potatoes with onions, tomatoes, and spices, and Palak paneer (creamy spinach with cheese cubes), rice and roti were served on the side.

The other side items of pickled carrots and the Tamarind sauce were tasty.
We both had the mango lassi and very much enjoyed the sweet dessert gulab jamun after a quick and pleasant lunch. My friend enjoyed the food so much that he promised to bring his wife back.

I will definitely recommend this place to other friends.

Pro: All homemade style food that is freshly prepared.
    Con: No alcohol is served.

    Food quality: 5
    Service: 4
    Ambiance and cleaniness: 4
    Overall: 4.25

Went here with the hubs last night because neither of us wanted to cook. I'm a vegetarian, and he's a chef, so it can be challenging to find a place that will offer what we're both looking for. I didn't realize until reading yelp reviews before we left that this place is all vegetarian. Hubs was up for it, so off we went.

We were going to try an appetizer, but then we saw the buffet and just went for that instead. The vegetable fritters were very tasty, and the vegetable balls (like meat balls) were AH-mazing. The curried chickpeas were okay, but I didn't go back for seconds. There was also rice pudding for dessert.

Only two complaints: I wish the food had been a little bit hotter, but that's what you get for going buffet, and I wish there had been small bowls for the rice pudding instead of just the flat plates available for the buffet. For ten bucks per person for dinner though, you really can't complain. I saw a lot of Indian people in there too, which is always a good sign, being that it's Indian food. We will be back, and next time, we'll try the sampler appetizer.

The parathas are good and and the quality of the entrees used to be better. Buffet is spicy even for me and definitely for my wife. I find Preets pricier than it should be.  Preets is just ok these days.

Finally!  My husband and I have been searching for the best Indian food in the Seattle area and I think we have finally found it.  Granted you have to drive out to Redmond and its not exactly cheap, but I don't care.  Sooooooo good.  My favorite moment is when an employee was on the phone with a customer and said "no, we can't take out the spices"  Awesome.

    Side note: vegetarian only

Finally I found a great Indian place!  The great thing about this place over all the other Indian restaurants is that you get small meals that are big on flavor.

There's no "five star" system as to spiciness.  It is served the way it is made.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who craves great Indian food that is high on taste!

Man, who can say anything bad about these guys?

Great veggie dishes, great regional dishes. Prices aren't bad, ambiance isn't bad. Service isn't bad.

I will say the place gets crowd-ED during lunch from all the Microsofties flocking there (and then taking their goddamned time).

Otherwise, I like this joint a lot.

American Nouveau Indian? Yeah, that kind of describes it.

The food was good.  Not great, just good and definitely overpriced.  It definitely lacked a certain je ne se qua found in traditional Indian restaurants and the absence of mango chutney and naan really kind of bothered me.  The atmosphere was pretty bland and for some reason there were only two CD's in rotation...The Cure and Duran Duran's Greatest hits...strange.  The service was relatively good, but again, nothing to write home about.

Although I'd probably recommend this place to someone in the area, I don't think I will be venturing out of the Queen Anne borough anytime soon to go here again.  Especially since they don't serve alcohol.  Being an alcoholic, this was just not a compatible match.

Preets represents home-made north indian cooking at its best. While the all-vegetarian menu is not as extensive as most Indian Restaurants, the food is lip smackingly good.

So why the 4 stars...service is not great...that's why. Most of the time, one has to self-seat and there is nobody around to take your order. When the restaurant is full, it can take a good 10 - 15 minutes before somebody comes by to get your order. and another 15 - 20 minutes before you get the food. The portion size of the entree is also slightly on the smaller side.

On the positive side, the yummy food makes up for these shortcomings.

Once they fix the portion sizes and the service quality, this will be one of the best dining spots in the Seattle area.

The good: the atmosphere, friendly service & nacho appetizer

The bad: food tastiness/quality & price

I was disappointed with this place!  Overall the food wasn't that great, the portions were smaller than I expected, and because of that, over-priced.

The menu is not very clear, so it does help to have the servers explain what the options are.  If you get a Parotha Combo, you basically pick your main entre and also get a side of fried layered tortillas (which I didn't like ...bland and greasy, no flavor.) Rice isn't included. The service was friendly and helpful with questions, but not very attentive to re-filling our glasses.  They also cleared away the leftovers we could have taken home... meh.  The best thing I had was the papdi chaat (nachos, kind of).

I would suggest Haveli's down the street compared to Preet's. I can't think of a reason I'd go back.  The atmosphere was pleasant but overall fairly disappointing..
