This is one of my favorite vintage stores. They have an amazing collection of vintage records, kitchenware, clothes, and furniture. I plan on buying my new living room suit from here. I come as often as possible. The merchandise changes quickly.

The inventory at Pre To Post Modern is very eclectic and stocks some really kitschy knick knacks and housewares and retro furniture too. They have a nice vintage clothing and accessories area too. The prices are fair and with a little digging, you can find some real treasures.

The staff greets you but generally leaves you to your own curiosity which I appreciate.

This is a great spot to pick up a gift for someone who adores vintage or retro goodness or who possesses a fun sense of humor!

What a super fun shopping experience!!! After months of passing Pre to Post Modern I finally had the opportunity to stop in. The incense was a tad overwhelming but I'd rather incense than moth balls and it sort of helps shape the experience of going back in time. The free treats (raspberry brownies) were fabulous as well.

The shop is basically three rooms: clothing, accessories, and home. The clothing and shoes are in such great condition and have been picked incredibly well. Dresses and coats seemed to be priced between $45-75. Going through the jewelery was similar to days spent going through grandma's jewelery. I love the furniture displays and the art is to die for.

There are endless options at Pre and Post Modern and you can certainly find unique gifts. Their LP collection was quite impressive as well.

Good God, this place is nuts. With mid-century furniture, retro household goods and 1950's-1990's vintage clothing, what more could you want?!

Buy what you want when you see it, because the last time I thought about a 1950's designer table it was gone the next day. No joke. I've bought 3 chairs and a lamp there. Their prices are much better than most antique malls and most of the internet!

The household goods are amazing! Everything from 1950's kitschy kitchen ware to 1970's paisley hand towels.

Their vintage clothing for men, women and children vary greatly in price, decade and quality. With so many vendors, you're likely to see $ next to $$$.

This is my favorite store in Nashville. The end.

Perhaps it's just my taste in things, but what makes Pre to Post Modern stand out from other vintage stores is that I actually want to buy stuff there. Does that make sense? Instead of a store full of 0-3 size dresses I don't wear and gigantic dining room sets priced at $1,000, Pre to Post Modern has an eclectic selection of gifts, houseware, and accessories. (And yes, clothing and furniture.) I dare you to come to Pre to Post Modern and not find something you don't love! And everything's pretty affordable, even for vintage.

Things I have bought at pre to post modern include:

Blue Velvet JC Penney Coat that is fucking awesome
SuperBowl 14 red button down sweater, also awesome
    Ridiculously good sunglasses
Some sort of argyle hat, fantastic
All of these items together were very inexpensive, and Lynda, the vintage shop girl, was extraordinarily helpful. I will be going back to purchase more sweaters, since I am now obsessed with looking as much like Mr. Rogers as possible.

I haven't been to that many vintage stores in Nashville yet, but I think Pre to Post Modern is the best store in the area, and probably one of the best EVER.  I like how everything is organized by furniture, housewares/kitchen, and clothing/accessories.  They have a wonderful furniture selection, with many pieces from different eras - just bought a '50s coffee table today on the cheap!  The clothing is also pretty fantastic, but it's largely from the '70s, and I would adore some more '50s clothing. :)  My favorite part, however, is that they are very reasonably priced.  Some vintage/antique stores will charge you an arm and a leg, but not Pre to Post Modern!

I love this little shop.  I guess the best description would be kitschy.  Full of 50's style goods and great furniture that is straight out of your grandmothers basement.  Just walking into this place makes me want to pour myself a cocktail and go hang out by the astroturf tiki bar.  The prices are sweet especially compared to their neighbors.

If you dig the vibe of what the future looked like in the mid century then I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by Pre to Post modern.

Umm, did I go to the same place as the other reviewers?  I understand that thrift/vintage stores can be hit or miss.  On the day I went to visit, it was a complete miss.

Problem one: no parking.  The lot across the street has signs saying that it's only for such and such business.  The lot right next door to Pre to Post has signs saying it's only for this and this business.  Frustrated, I went into the other store and politely asked the guy behind the counter if he knew where else I could park and he graciously said it would be ok for me to park in his lot.  He added that he appreciated me asking.

Second problem, as soon as I opened the door it smelled.  I don't like it when thrift stores smell because it's hard to tell if the clothing is going to smell.  Not that there was any clothing worth buying.  I didn't even have a "Oh, that's too bad it's not in my size" moment.

The store is pretty small, so it didn't take more than ten minutes to browse the whole place.  I went last Friday, during the day, and there were a couple of teenagers browsing plus me.  It wasn't busy.  The girl behind the counter didn't say a word to me until I was halfway out the door and then she gave a weak "thank you."

I am giving it two stars instead of one though due only to the furniture.  I don't live in Nashville, so I wasn't shopping for furniture, but from what I glanced at, they did have some neat pieces.  (I didn't look at the prices, so I can't speak to that.)

If you are coming to Nashville from out of town, this place is too small to make it worth your valuable vacation time.

The place is so fun! Here's why:

    a) The Tshirts! A Motel 6 Shirt! A Fryguy shirt! The list goes on.
    b) That blue couch from the 50s. I'm in love.
    c) The Pacman painting. You have to go see it for yourself.
    d) The Lassie children's book.

The outside looks like an old bowling alley, but on the inside you get a nice mix of old and new things. They have papers saying what can be bought, so I assume they are willing to buy older stuff from you, or at least someone through them is. They had a few item from A Christmas Story still hanging around, although I assume with Valentine's Day fast approaching, those may not be around too much longer.

If antique stores are too stuffy for you, you still need to come to the 8 South area and have a look around this place.

My New Year's Eve weekend vintage shopping efforts in Nashville were almost entirely fruitless (everyone was closed for the holiday until after I was leaving town!)...but then we made one last attempt and stopped by Pre To Post Modern, and they were open!  Score!  I didn't even realize that there were tons of clothes in the room off to the right until we were getting ready to check out, I had already spent an hour poring over all of the knick knacks and household goods in the first two rooms.  Everything seemed really appropriately priced and I had to make a deal with myself to only buy what I could carry.  In the end, I left with a very cool glass cocktail mixer with two teeny matching glasses ($15) and a couple of old French nudie pictures framed ($3 each).  I left behind an amazing pair of black leather chaps that actually fit and were in great condition.  I'm still kicking myself for not buying them.

They also get points for being bright and sunny, for the most part pretty spacious, clean and colorful.  It was a cool, fun environment to shop in.

When you walk into this little shop, you have stepped back in time. Everything in this place is from another era.. The furniture, lighting, clothes, and trinkets are all just to die for.. Love this place and will definitely go back.

This used to be a place to find only retro furniture, but now one of the 3 rooms is full of really cool vintage clothes, shoes, gadgets, and accessories.  I found a wallet that I convinced myself not to buy today, but I keep thinking about it so might go back tomorrow--it's an honest to God, original Sea World plastic wallet in mint condition--the kind I KNOW I owned when I was six and thought it was the best thing.  Complete with coin purse and mirror.  It was $12, which is probably about $11.50 more than my mom bought it for 25 years ago, but hey--inflation.

Other cool things I like, besides the Sea World wallet, are all the retro furniture.  One room is all new and special order, but with a funky retro feel.  Another room has actual used furniture, but all in good condition.

Super cool place in the 8th Avenue antique district--if you're in the area, check it out!

Pre to Post Modern is a hit or miss kind of place for me. When I find stuff there, I find a TON... Or I leave empty handed. I collect vintage Pyrex, and I went in one time and got at least $200 worth of the stuff for only half that. They are very reasonably priced, which is the reason I keep going back. A lot of shops have taken to selling vintage stuff for way more than it's worth, and luckily PTPM has never done that. If you want to decorate your place to look like a '70s nightclub, then this is the place to go. On any given day, walk in and find anything from vintage bowling bags to 1950s cat-eye glasses, platform shoes, to an '80s Christmas collector's glass from Hardee's.

PS Don't try to park in the antique lamp store's lot just down from PTPM. They get mean when you do.

Yea..ok..I really don't like to be dissin any place but my husband and I have actually bought several items in Pre to Post Modern but lately have well..not been to happy with the whole " your not cool enough " to shop in our store vibe when we have entered from the hip and cool gal behind the counter. That being said, as a collector of vintage furniture and other items this place has some cool stuff. It is more of a place to shop for "trendier " vintage pieces like fun t-shirts, jewelry, etc. The selection of vintage furniture is usually pretty limited but the pieces are in good shape and cool.

I can't believe I'd never been into this place before...and it's probably a good thing it's a new discovery, because otherwise I'm sure I would have already spent hundreds of dollars there.  Pre to Post Modern (as indicated by its name) is full of both completely neat vintage furniture and clothes as well as very modern, beautifully designed new furniture and art.

On the right side of the store are what you might call "Pre-Modern" wares.  They have old ashtrays, dining room sets, Western shirts, posters, ceramic figures, paintings, typewriters and more.  Most of this stuff is relatively inexpensive, and you can find everything from amazing old Beatle boots to ashtrays straight out of the '50s shaped like camels.

On the left side of the store are the "Post-Modern" items.  These include very cool chairs (shaped like everything from dogs to crumpled pieces of paper), lamps, clothes and more.  Most of these items are more expensive than the vintage goods, but I wanted to buy everything there and decorate my house with it.

In addition to home decor items and clothes, Pre to Post Modern also has some records, books, lighters, and belt buckles.  Their staff is very hip and friendly, and their prices are pretty affordable.  Today I bought a large, super modern-looking ashtray/trashcan for $18 and a small "citrus" ashtray (shaped like an orange) for just $5.  There were about four dozen other items I was interested in (including an original circa 1976 poster of Farah Fawcett for $20).  GO TO PRE TO POST MODERN, but be prepared to leave having bought several extremely cool items.

This place is like the adult version of a candy store.  There are lots of colorful treats and most are priced surprisingly low.  The middle section of the store is full of new retro-style knick knacks and a great selection of used vintage clothing and accessories.  One side room is filled with great retro home decor items.  The other side has very modern, insanely cool, yet very pricey furniture and decorative items.

The very best deal I ever found there was on this pair of vintage lamps.  I'd been looking for lamps for my new apartment for a while and when I saw these teal and gold gems I almost died. They're so cool and the pair only cost me $40. That's like estate sale prices.  I still get excited just thinking about it.

Alright, I'm going to start with the room on to the right in Pre to Post Modern, and then move to the left.

This is the clothes room, where they have a bunch of new screen print T-shirts of bands (Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, etc) and quirky images (something about a taco and a salt shaker, another with a cartoon rabbit - you get the idea), for about $25 each.  There's a good selection of unique cowboy boots, and further back you'll find a few racks of moderately priced vintage polyester button down shirts, skirts, blouses, etc.  The clothes were mostly bold and hip, since I'm picky and very short, I didn't find anything right for me.

The middle room is packed with actual and imitation retro appliances, ashtrays, clocks, accessories, and books.  There's also a small selection of records, ranging from $5 (Bob Dylan's "Street Legal") to $20, and a collection of framed celebrity portraits.

Finally, the room to the left is filled with new '60s and '70s style paper lamps and brightly colored plastic chairs ($440) and tables.  Pre to Post Modern feels kind of kitsch and artificial/stylized to me, but I could see myself making a few good finds there if I kept coming back.

Glad I stopped in omw back from goodwill. Super neat things and it didn't seem to much on the pricey side for all of the vintage that was in there. I could have taken home a few lamps had i lived in town. My favorite part was at the front of the store they had a Christmas room with vintagey christmassy stuff inside. It's rare to see all of that in one place. Ill definitely be coming back when im back in town.

This was the first vintage store I hit when I came into town, and I fell instantly in love! Not only did they have fantastic stuff for really decent prices, was the girl at the counter super nice! I got an amazing gold lame tote bag for $15 and white leather boots for $25!! I wish I had had time to come back before I left town. The clerk even went out of her way to recommended some bars and restaurants that we might like. Overall, really well organized, great finds, even better prices. A+!
