Review from Eva H.
So, we're having a TON of people over for dinner. As I frantically rush around the kitchen making lasagna, caesar salad dressing, and the like, I'm dumping dishes in the sink like nobody's business. And then I realize it...the sink is clogged. REALLY clogged. I'm having guests over in mere hours...this is NOT okay.
Time to call in the pros.
Yelp led me to Powers and it did not lead me wrong. Though they were initially fully booked, the friendly person who answered the phone originally tracked me down via caller ID to let me know that a plumber was available ASAP should I need him (after trying to give me advice to solve it by myself!). A few minutes later, Bill pulled up and the fun began.
See, this was not an ordinary "just needs a quick snake" job as I had thought. No, after running the snake 25 feet--twice!--the lines were still clogged. So Bill hustled down to the parking garage where all of the pipes lead and got the job done. Sure, there was black sludge everywhere--apparently the pipes were extraordinarily clogged due to bad plumbing, a crap garbage disposal, and general use. Of course, it took longer than I expected--and I had guests coming in mere hours. And, I'm dreading seeing the bill--though Bill was nice enough to let me clean up the mess versus paying him $89/hr to wipe up said sludge.
Overall, though, Powers was extraordinarily professional, went above and beyond to ensure that I was satisfied on the quick, and for that I give them 5 stars.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 2/1/2012

In University Heights. I tried with Home Depot things first then got a friends handyman. That was a disaster. Embarrassed about the whole mess, my neighbor recommended Powers Plumbing. I was afraid I'd be taken to the bank, but actually they were OK with the cost. I understand we had made a mess of things and I'm supposed to use a plumber not a handyman, of course, but I've got to try. Well all in all I am really happy that this is done, I have my water on again, and they didn't make me feel like an idiot. All I can say is thanks guys and I won't make the same mistake again.
I opened my Yelp account because of these guys. Good going.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 1/9/2012

When my wife and I moved to our bungalow in Mission Hills 10 years ago, we needed some plumbing done - we called someone and they charged us about $500 for a $200 job (we later found out), he sent us Christmas cards for years after that one visit...the next time we needed a plumber we asked our neighbors - they all recommended Powers (apparently, a local institution), we gave them a call, the plumber who came to our home was on time, nice and fixed our pipes in a timely fashion.
Their plumbers do NOT work on commission, no up-charging! Fair prices, great workmanship. Powers is experts on older homes and new homes - we have the experience and knowledge, also their staff is awesome, billing was professional and friendly - what more could one ask for?
Boy, talk about trust. Over the years, Powers is the only plumber that has serviced our old Craftsman.
Highly recommend Powers Plumbing to all!Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 1/4/2011

I had the 'Best San Diego Plumber' work on my drains. The technician evaluated all five drains in my condo. He let me know which ones needed clearing. The bill was very low for great service and knowledgable expertise.

This is a local family business for decades for a reason. As a realtor, I have the occasion to work with many types of contractors - for my own house and for many clients. All service providers are not created equal! There are those that don't show up on time, don't show up at all, over charge, charge for work they don't do or make mistakes then don't fix them. In the industry word gets around.
Powers Plumbing is a class act. They are always on time (if not early). They are honest, fair and do it right the first time. I have called them out to fix something that I thought was going to be a big mess and costly just to have them let me know it's not as bad as I thought and an inexpensive fix. There aren't many plumbers that would tell you that. All told, I have used them personally or recommended them to clients about 12 times and every time I'd give them 5 stars.
That's worth Yelping about.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 11/12/2010

Did you know that L.B. Powers also repairs older floor and wall furnaces? Well - Yes they do. Not only that, but they are honest, knowledgeable, and considerate.
I had two other companies look at my non-working floor furnaces. The first (Anderson) told me that it would be a few thousand dollars to repair my existing furnaces and that I should install a new forced air system (for over $7 grand). The second (Howe) gave me an estimate of over $800. Powers gave me the price of parts (new gas valves) and the hourly rate for labor and a range for the number of hours it might take. They carefully diagnosed the problem, replaced one gas valve, and repaired the pilot on the other furnace, then tested for carbon monoxide. The whole job took 4.5 hours and only needed 1/2 the parts quoted by the other company.
I am totally happy with L.B. Powers' service, attitude, considerate staff, and quality of repairs. I would not hesitate to call them again for any plumbing or older furnace repair.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 8/13/2009

This place is awesome when you need plumbing or heating items and for repairs when needed. They have a store front also were you can buy parts and anytime I needed valves or random plumbing things for my house I came here super knowledgeable too.
I remember the first time I came here it was to look for a water shut off valve went to Home Depot(Lame) could not find it there or at least the one I was looking for and came here because I remembered about it because I used to drive by this place every week. I came in with the original valve and he just glanced at it grabbed one form the back compared it with mine gave a smirk and told me it looks like one you can get from home depot that will fail on you in a couple years then he handed me the same valve but from a company he said has trusted for a long time no plastic or cheap construction. I was a bit afraid of the cost but it was the same cost basically as the ones I saw a Home Depot I think it was $2 more then the ones there but worth it its been now 6 years and not one leak or anything from the two valves that I replaced. This experience made me a customer for life at this place when ever I need plumbing items.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 8/13/2009

The office told me there was a half hour minimum charge for someone to check out our old furnace then billed me for 45 minutes via mail when the guy was here 5 minutes to tell me the furnace was old and he recommended replacing it, which they do not do. I was not told I had to pay travel time. Guthrie and Sons told me the same thing over the phone and is coming to give a free estimate for replacement. Others in the industry also offer a free estimate for replacement. The service technician was a good guy and professional. I have no issue with him. I will not call L.B. Powers again and don't recommend them. (When I called they did lower the bill to half hour but I still find it insulting).

Fixed my 1920's Craftsman floor furnace. After making the appointment, I was impressed that (a) they called ahead to tell me they were on their way, (b) he arrived on time, (c) the service guy was very knowledgeable about our make and model of floor furnace, (d) he fixed the problem relatively quickly, (e) he was thorough in testing the fixed furnace for carbon monoxide. I also got a discount for mentioning Yelp. I will be using these guys again and recommend them to everyone.

Review from Elisa F.

Powers sent their man out to give me an estimate for replacing the wall heater in my rental unit. He spent the entire time (1) expressing worries that the job was going to be too hard, and require structural changes(!), and
(2) telling me how well he knew the previous owners. It was clear that I did not measure up to them, in his estimation. He said he'd get back to me with an estimate of the work.
But--he NEVER gave me an estimate, never returned my calls, yet never said he didn't want the job.
So I called Down Under Plumbing, my heroes. They came promptly, and replaced the heater with no difficulty whatsoever. Powers' warning that the job would require changes to the property was unfounded.
Since I posted this review originally, Powers' office manager has contacted me to apologize for their earlier nonresponse, and outlined her efforts to improve office procedures and customer communications.
Updated 5/12/2011 - when I said "office manager", I meant "Janet O." contacted me through Yelp email. I had assumed she was the office manager; apparently she is not.Comment from Janet O. of Powers Plumbing 6/6/2011
