There were 3 things that right off the bat made me skeptical about this place:

1/ It's in Arkansas, not known as a destination for fine dining.  Right down the street from houses with couches on the front porch, one with a hand-painted wooden sign that said "NO TURN AROUND" in angry red letters.  Pffft!  That's the sound of a can of beer opening on a warm summer night.

2/ The distance from the sea from which the "fresh" seafood is from, to the town of Fayetteville, is a loooooong ways away.

3/ The building is the old Electric Company.  So, kinda wondering what lurks beneath the surface - nope, don't want to know, actually.

And here's the reason I was wrong:

1/ I'm an ass who sometimes forgets that there is seriously good food outside a major metropolitan area.

Powerhouse was recommended to us by 2 very fine gentlemen working at the front desk at the Hampton Inn.  They did not hesitate at all when asked what the best restaurant in town was, and handed us a map.  They were dead right.

The building is large and spacious, with exposed brick & high ceilings (see pt. 3 above), and even though the AC wasn't working, they had ceiling fans going which made it cool enough.  It was 50 cent beer night, so the place was packed - mix of University of Arkansas students and local folk.

They served Shiner Bock, had Killian's on tap, and a really decent wine list.  So instantly everyone felt a little happier.

We started with the Powerhouse house salad, which was mixed for us at our table, and was a great mix of greens, hardboiled eggs, red onions, bleu cheese, and anchovies with a lemony vinaigrette.  Yum yum.  I wanted to try the fried alligator, but no one else thought that was a good idea.  Boooo!

For my entree, I had the crawfish 3 ways.  Oh my, it was enough to feed a family of 7.  I definitely felt my inner Bubba Gump:  fried crawfish, crawfish etoufee, and sauteed crawfish.  Beer #2 eased it down my gullet nicely.

My dining companions had the fillet mignon with bleu cheese and the seafood feast and both looked great.  The menu is extensive and there were a lot of dishes that looked tempting, including a fillet mignon stuffed with crab and shrimp.  Surf & turf!!

The quality of the food was very good, with both cajun and non-cajun dishes, and the place is obviously popular.  The prices were not cheap (avg about $15-20 for entrees), but the portions were huge, and I felt that the quality warranted the price.

Definitely check it out if you are in this part of the country - goooood stuff.

Visited Powerhouse again this past weekend. It was after a Razorback Football game so the place was packed. The waitress we had was among the best I have had anywhere in quite a while. We had a group of 4 and she had several other tables, but she checked on us regularly and quickly took care of everything we asked for.

The food was better than it had been the past few times I have been here. We had the Oysters Rockefeller, which always seem to be very good here, to start then several different main courses. Everyone was quite happy with their food.

I had gotten a bit down on Powerhouse before, but I must say, everything was great this trip even though it was extremely busy.

Try the Calamari or the Fried Alligator appetizers if Oysters Rockefeller aren't your thing! They are both really good here. I also like most of their fresh fish preparations and while I am not a fan of all the pasta dishes, my wife always swears by them.

I was there not too long ago and I loved those cornbread muffins that have a little heat in them, almost like a very very light cajun spice.   Their seafood is always fresh  and they serve a mean dish of pasta.    I have been there many times for lunch and dinner and they have always made our dining experience a pleasurable one.

Sing along to the tune of "I Love the Flower Girl"... I love the Powerhouse! The atmosphere is different and fun, the food very good.  I love the Power sandwich -- grilled chicken, which I order everywhere, and this is the best.  I had some wonderful grilled shrimp here too. Fried catfish good, salad with crawfish good, but my husband warns against the crab cake sandwich and the alligator.  I too found the place when I asked a local where the best place was to go for lunch.

Party on the Patio: When they say $.50 drafts, they actually mean fill a 12oz solo cup to the 8oz mark and then charge you for 2 drafts. We contested our ticket with the bartender who visibly processed the "2 @ $.50" mistake but averred, "Yeah, well, they're a dollar each."

Reasonably good food, but really nothing special.  The building is neat, but you could get many of the food items at several other places for a similar price.

This place has always disappointed me every time I have visited Fayetteville.  So so service combined with mediocre food that most any pub could reproduce with better results.  I just don't get the popularity of this place.

Powerhouse has always been a good place to get lunch or dinner.  They have some good cajun style dishes.  The best part about Powerhouse though is the patio on Thursdays and Sunday night with live music and  a low cover charge.
