The food and drinks are great: fresh, healthy, delicious. I would eat at this place everyday if it wasn't so expensive. I make the same sort of food at home for a whole lot cheaper, a whole lot cheaper. So yes, this is my only complaint, the price.

I recommend the 'build your own bowl' and have found that the baby bowl is enough food for me. Everything was cooked to perfection and my favorite sauce is the ginger miso. Also--tempe over tofu any day.

Anyone else hate how eating healthy is so expensive in this city??

I will start by saying that I don't go to a place like Power Source for the service. If I want a counter person who will compliment my hair and lovingly gaze at me while I make my order, then I'll go to a spa. Or something. I can't imagine wanting that experience, so I'm not sure.

    Anyway.

I went to Power Source for the first time today. I stopped in around 9:00 am on my way to work, stoked, having seen their online menu, to snag a vegan lunch wrap to bring to work for under $7. Unfortunately, I was informed that they only have lunch items beginning at 11:00 am. I ended up grabbing a scrambler (scrambled tofu wrapped up in a whole wheat tortilla with guacamole, veggies, and lots of spinach), a smoothie, and a muffin.

Everything was great! I'd been looking forward to a veggie wrap with hummus and sprouts, but the scrambler hit the spot come lunch time. I had a very short wait (though the staff did take a bit of time to get together and notice me when I first arrived), and had perfectly good service.

The one suggestion I would make is it would be great if lunch options were available earlier in the day. I understand that might be tough given the fact that everything is made from scratch daily. However, I know I'd be in probably 2 or 3 times a week if I could pick up lunch wraps on my way to work in North Beach, where healthy, reasonably-priced vegan options are scarce.

Overall, I'm happy to know this place exists, and I hope to see it again soon!

I have avoided going here since I had a similar experience during my last trip...but i wanted some coffee and some organic cream this AM and didn't feel like walking to further cafe that i typically prefer.

I ordered a cup of coffee and a banana. Simple, right?

I'm informed that they don't have any dairy right now...would i like almond, soy or some other non-cow-produced-subsitute? Um, not really but whatever. Sure, i'll take almond milk. Almost the same *rolls eyes*.

After taking my money from me, the 'dude' just walks away. I didn't realize their coffee was self-serve so i bring my mug over to the counter thinking he'll fill it. He points to the self-serve area, which i didn't notice. Fair enough.

So, waiting for the other half of my order (a banana. not juiced, not sliced, just a flippin banana)...standing, waiting -- guy looks up, surprised like he's wondering what i could possibly be waiting for..."banana?" - "oh yea".

How a banana and a crappy cup of coffee with almond milk can take this long to put together, and cost $3 is beyond me...but thanks for the solid reminder of why i won't come back again.

Love the theory and i'm all for the cause, but...seriously dude?

Having recently moved office buildings I was on the prowl for a good lunch spot and I think I found it in Power Source Cafe!  It looks like I do the smart thing and order online for a pick up later as I noticed the line out the door around noon-ish one day. I've tried two items there so far, the Iron Giant and the My Body's a tempeh-le (both as wraps) - i love beets so I'm all about the Iron Giant wrap and its really good and filling and i don't feel disgusting after I eat it like i normally do when I get a sandwich elsewhere.  The Tempeh wrap was just sooo good too and filling. Both will set you back about $7 which means I only go there maybe once a week... but I'm sold on this place!
    Healthy options. Delicious.  CHECK!

Disappointing. For $8.50 I could have gone to MixtGreens and gotten a salad that was stuffed with goodness and was a meal instead of this appetizer. DO NOT ORDER A SALAD if you want a meal. Go for a bowl or a wrap. And let me just give a shout of thanks to my co-worker who shared her trailmix with me in the aftermath of this snack. A few more handfuls of almonds and blueberries and I'll feel like I had lunch.

Points for being a healthy, veg focused place near work/downtown.  I placed an order online, and they personally called me since items from the online menu were out.
I got a bowl with brown/black rice, steamed kale & garlic, tempeh, and spicy peanut sauce.  It was large, delicious, and healthy.  If I could afford to, I'd eat it every day - the peanut sauce was fantastic.  Had no problems with my order, though I came after the lunch rush.  I'd definitely come back, even just for the shots of wheatgrass or blue-green algae, I'm still wired from it!

This is the kind of business I envision us having more of, if the Occupy folks get their way with the world. Organic, expensive, but high quality food that's good for you and for the planet, served up by snarky hippy/hipster types, who don't say fake hi when you come in (hate that anyway! Jamba Juice, are you listening?) but also sometimes seem like they'd rather not have to actually help you. Ah well. Eating well is more important than being treated well.

I love this place. It is the only legit, healthy, delicious, vegan + vegetarian-friendly place downtown. I was so glad when I found it.

I've read a lot of complaints about service and, to be totally honest, I've also had a few times where they forget something in my order. But, on the flip side, if you politely tell them about it, they are more than happy to remedy the situation.

Recently, they forgot the delicious butternut squash I ordered. Most of the time, I wouldn't care. I've worked in service before and mistakes happen! But I was really looking forward to it, so I sent an email wondering if they might give me some squash free of charge the next day.

Howard (who I assume is the owner) promptly replied and gave me my entire meal for free. FOR FREE!!!

I will continue to go here because the people are friendly and the food is great, even if something is forgotten once in a while. The food is worth it and much better for you than anything else that's offered downtown. It's sure to give you energy instead of the after-lunch slump caused by so many other, greasy options downtown.

Unfortunately I have many problems with this place, and despite repeated chances (I really want to eat here as the food options are usually enticing and delicious), they have gotten worse in recent times.

The lunch hour is DESPERATELY understaffed.

On six of seven visits my order has been incorrect, but by the time I finally get my food, the 20 person line has snaked to the street corner and I'm too flustered to wait longer. I order a salad, I get a wrap. I order a wrap, I get a sandwich, and so on. Today during lunch the bromigo making smoothies was either incompetent or working his first shift - I felt sorry for the poor guy as he was clearly drowning in orders with no one to help him out. 20 minutes later I had received everything in my order except a ginger lemonade that had been paid for, but I couldn't get him to make eye contact so that I could ask him if he could pour me one, so I just left without it.

Everything I've eaten here has been tasty - the Power Source Salad, the Salmon Salad Wrap,  Apple-A-Day Salad, Cold Crusher & Modern Elvis smoothies were all satisfying. The one miss was today's Lentil Soup, of which I took exactly one spoonful before thrusting it out of my site. It was akin to plucking something straight out of the BRAT diet (http://en.wikipedia.or...) - an oily, mealy mess and the lentils were so broken down they had the texture of baby food and not much else. An absolutely horrifying soup.

To management: please hire extra staff and make the pickup area for online orders more obvious - something has to be done with queue flow because the current situation is a confusing mess. It's like an angry, hungry mob waiting to be fed and when one of the cooks finally emerges from the back room, they all rush him.

To customers: this place is absolutely to be avoided between noon and 2pm. The waits are just too long, and as other reviewers have said, it's hard to tell if "it's the food that's good, or the fact that you had to wait so long that anything would taste good at that point."

Like almost everyone else who's given a less than stellar review for Power Source, I really wanted to like them. Lunch options in SOMA that are both healthy AND delicious are kind of limited. Plus everyone who works here is really nice. But (and this is kind of an important "but" I guess) the service here is consistently a mess. Between the long lines, almost always being out of something I want to order and the weird system of handing your order off to the kitchen in a manner that seems less accurate than a game of telephone, more often than not I end up super frustrated by the time I do get my order, which has on multiple occasions not actually been what I ordered.

I'll probably go back once I forget how disorganized this place is, because that one time everything went well? It was really great.

My favorite lunch spot. Mainly because it's a nice warm meal alternative to the typical sandwich or salad you can get in the area. And it's healthy. I recommend the build-a-bowl, which is the nice warm meal I love, or the baby-bowl (which they fill very generously so it's plenty of food - it's tough to finish the big size).

Super hippie place (in the financial district - only in sf, right?), super packed all the time so I'm not surprised to see some poor customer service reviews here, but if you place your order online, it's really easy to slip in and out quickly.

Usually just stop in to grab a quick juice (greens or sometimes blended fruit). Haven't tried any food here yet.

The place is usually busy during lunch with the line running out the door. It' pretty loud, so best to take your food out.

I've been frequenting Power Source Juice Bar since my Monday excursions to 50 Fremont Farmer's Market. One thing that I've learned since my multiple trips here is that you have to be prepared for your order to be slightly off. I love this place, but I've come to accept that they can be slightly disorganized when it comes to ordering.

Their whole system of ordering and build a bowls gets fairly complicated, so even if you order online, which has the potential to lessen your wait, something usually ends up a little mixed up in the final product. I think I've only had a perfect build a bowl once.

That being said, their stuff, even if it's not quite what your ordered is always delicious, made with care, and is very healthy. I also highly recommend their baked goods at the front. The vegan zucchini muffin that I scarfed down was incredible. Moist and you could taste all of the zucchini bits in it.

    Trust.

I want to love PowerSource so much.  The food is great, they offer online ordering.  The problem with this place is EXECUTION.

If you can order online, but your order isn't ready when you come to pick it up and you have to stand in line in the confusing, disorganized mess that is the dining room, why bother?

They run out of things all the time (see previous review by Michael K about straws).  The employees are flustered, have no sense of urgency, are generally unapologetic about anything that goes wrong.

But, bottom line:  when I order online and I still have to wait 15 minutes, not cool.

Pay for a consultant and figure out how to get people in and out of this place EFFICIENTLY.

UPDATE:  I just spent about 30 minutes reading other reviews online.  It's amazing how consistent the reviews are: great food, BAD SERVICE. Is there an owner or a manager of this place?  Do they read yelp?

I wanted to like this place.  I really, really did.  It has fresh food that you're not likely to find in the financial district (sweet potatoes, quinoa, etc.).

The only problem is, is that takes so long to get your food that you're not sure if it's the food that's good, or the fact that you had to wait so long that anything would taste good at that point.

I would forgive them this if it were a one time, or even a two-time occurrence.  But, every single time I've gone, I've had to endure long waits.  Even the time that I ordered online and went to "pick it up" I had to wait while the employee blinked his eyes at me and then finally said, "Oh we sometimes have problems with the online ordering."  Umm, yes.  Apparently.

I think they have tried to help by getting one of those overhead electronic newspaper-read-y things that shows some of the day's current NY Times articles.  Given the wait, I might suggest War and Peace might be more length appropriate.

I came here with a vegan, left with a vegan lunch.  Those kinda things happen.

The bowls here are a pretty decent lunch idea.  Pick one protein, one major vegetable, two minor vegetables, and some sauce.  They get mixed up together and served up.  Simplicity and deliciousness.

They make really good waffles here and I love a good waffle. I've had lunch here also, one of the combo dealies, tempeh, quinoa, root veggies, in thai curry sauce. It was yummy but was missing something...meat. They serve fish here though! And I think chicken. You can put in an order online or over the phone so that you don't have to wait inside because it can get cramped during the lunch rush. I'm not sure yet if I can get used to a vegan diet but I like that this place is here in the Financial District.

    Delicious smoothies.
A little bit on the pricey side with most smoothies topping out around 7 bucks.
Also of note: I've got to second the other yelpers in saying that some of these guys are seriously High as a kite.  Rastas and hippies galore.

It can be annoying when you are pressed on time and these hippies are taking forever to squeeze oranges.

However if you have the time and the money, then stop by.  Try and see if they can throw in some ganja into your smoothie

Power Source Juice Bar catered my wedding event in May, and my friends and family are STILL talking about it.

I gave this group SPECIFIC details about what I wanted and I added: FRESH and ORGANIC to everything. What I got was not only fresh and organic, but absolutely fabulous.

My event was 2-parts: a 'cocktail hour' at the conservatory of flowers and a BBQ reception the next day in Golden Gate Park. Power Source was not only professional and punctual, but gave a fun an healthy spin on all the usual suspects at BBQ day (ie. red and green cabbage coleslaw with roasted sesame seeds and vinaigrette sauce, watermelon mint punch, seasonal fruit salad with antioxidant rich blueberries) but also managed some seriously classy dishes for cocktail hour (salmon mousse with caviar, walnut pomegranate pate) at a very affordable cost. My guests are STILL asking me where i found my caterer and the staff at the Conservatory is interested in featuring them on their list of favorites for perspective bookings.

I can't vouch or the juice bar itself, but I thank my lucky stars I was hooked up with this team to cater my big day. Would recommend to anyone looking to impress guests with healthy organic foods at a 5 star level for a 3 star price.

It's rare to walk into an establishment and immediately know that management randomly drug tests its employees. Apparently you're not allowed to show up to work at Power Source Juice Bar sober. Mandatory drug use is enforced at all times.

During my two visits, the staff idly wandered around, randomly prepping vegetables, talking with one another, and generally admiring their coolness and good vibes. I was mildly surprised the guy s-l-o-w-l-y chopping carrots didn't stop and pull out a pipe every few minutes, because given his performance and red eyes he was higher than a kite.

I don't know if they can smell the fact that I eat meat, or I'm not hipster enough for them, or they can tell I wash my hair on a daily basis, but having to wave my arms to get help (literally) gets old real quick. Using my voice did not work - I was simply ignored. It was also difficult to get anyone to go to the register so I could pay for my crappy drink, and let's just say watching them try and make change is akin to a slow motion train wreck.

I highly recommend applying for a position here if you like to get high on the job.

Took the 'build a bowl' option where you choose an item each from a lot of different lists and get it all together in a box (hmm.. they should call it 'build a box' instead).. everything sounds really yummy
the only downside of this place being so awesome is that a lot of people already seem to know about it, so you might have to wait in a line for quite a while

Good bowls, better sandwiches. I normally order the curry egg salad sandwich or the turkey-bacon-avocado sandwich. The latter includes almost half a turkey breast + a bunch of bacon. Definitely not your usual health-food fare.

I went to Power Source for lunch because I heard they had quinoa, one of the most humble of grains. I like the style of creating your own "bowl" so to speak, select veggies, select a sauce, select a meat (or vegetarian), and they craft it for you.

It was extremely filling and delicious -- I recommend the peanut sauce.

Power Source is a great alternative to the more highly priced, busy, slightly pretentious (albeit still tasty) Plant Restaurant nearby.

The meat they serve is organic and grassfed, their produce is local and organic, and their prices are superb for what they are providing.

My favorite meal is the Baby Build-a-Bowl with kale, sweet potatoes, and extra veggies accompanied with tahini sauce.

The major tip you should take away from this review is:  If you work in the financial district, ORDER ONLINE.  It is fast, easy, and painless, and you won't have to wait 20 minutes for the one cash register.  By the time you make your way to the store, your food will be ready and you get priority for the register line.  Then you can get back to working on your spreadsheet while eating in your cube... that problem I can't solve :).

Cons:  Not really a restaurant (a couple of small tables are located inside), have had my order mixed up with someone else's before (it was still delicious if that means something).

I always feel amazing after a meal here!  Go - you will like it.  I promise.

The morning staff is rude and invokes a "customer is always" wrong attitude. I've been coming here for years, but have recently been disappointed by the rising prices, the overcooked grains, the bitter orange juice, the lack of ginger (even when I paid extra for ginger) and the overall righteousness of the some of the staff. Competition is just a block away, so I'll go there instead for a better vibe and taste.

Last week I noticed on Yelp that a response was posted to my original review by the new manager Angela. I thought it was only fair that I give them another chance, especially because someone from Power Source--unlike ever before--showed an interest in addressing a customer's concerns

I went in this morning around 11:30 and ordered a lunch box, which is half a green salad, a full although simple but tasty sandwich and bunch of fresh sliced carrots with a dip. As usual, the food was very good but quite surprisingly the service was excellent too: 2 mins to order and less than 5 mins wait for it to be ready. I know I must have gone there just before the large lunch crowd shows up but compared to my several highly disappointing experiences from the past what I saw today was just remarkably different.

Let's just hope that my next visit--I will go during lunch hour next time--will come close enough to my pleasant experience today.

By the way, I believe it was Angela who was carrying around her little baby in a front sac attending to various parts of the kitchen and the front desk. She seemed very nice and committed to get things done and the rest of the staff was moving quickly too, which was night-and-day given how dreamy and spacey most of the previous staff I encountered was.

    Angela,
Thank you for the vast improvements. I am looking forward to visiting Power Source again soon.

The food is generally good but what will get to you sooner or later is the apathetic service!

I have to say i love this place.  It takes a while to get your food, so don't come here if you are in a rush.  The build-a-bowl is amazing, but I wish I could get a better mix of veggies - like broccoli and carrots instead of just broccoli.

I usually add extras that i have at work to the build-a-bowl, like baby carrots, sriracha, and sunflower seeds.   Perfection.

I consider myself to be pretty healthy. I'm all about that gluten free, nitrate free, blah blah free stuff. Caring this much about what I eat makes me uber-bougie. Am I a little embarrassed about this? Maybe a little. But is it wrong for me to care too much?!

So I'm definitely drawn to the offerings of Power Source Cafe, which is considered one of the healthiest smoothie and food spots in the Financial District. With a marketing tag line like that, how can a bougie health nut possibly resist?!

Am I a sucker for paying $7 for a smoothie? Probably. Does the Zeus smoothie (made with whey protein, organic banana, and almond milk) taste good? Yes. Can you honestly put a price on your health? According to the Power Source Cafe, the answer is also yes (and it's a steep one).

Sure if my work would just let me plug in a Magic Bullet (the blender...) I could whip up a Zeus myself in no time flat and at 1/3 of the cost. But oh no they are worried about something called a "fire hazard."

The Power Source Cafe is the Whole Foods of smoothie places. If you are into the Whole Foods scene than this is the place for you. Otherwise save your money for Jamba Juice and just add a protein boost.

It's not the perfect operation, but this is my go-to lunch option.  The build-a-bowl is healthy and tasty, and they have enough variety to keep things interesting (they'll do half/half too).  Also, their smoothies are both numerous and delicious, and in price, quite judicious.

I have been to power source five times.  I like their juices, smoothies and food.  Well, I can only speak to the apple/walnut salad, salmon tzatziki wrap and turkey sandwich....they were all tasty, and well priced when you get the lunch box deal.

Unfortunately, I will not be returning to power source.  The last two times I have been there, they have been out of straws.  Not a huge deal, right?  But, come on, you sell fresh squeezed juices and smoothie.  When I asked how I should consume my smoothie, the girl suggested I "walk next door and borrow one".  So, I'm waiting for my food, and I overhear the two girls talking about how their "boss" never orders enough utensils (I can only assume because she is against the over-consumption of packaging product, which I agree with).  I chimed in and told her that this was the second time I've been here in three weeks where they've been out of straws....and clearly it wasn't something they were worried about.  "Oh yea, our boss never orders enough of that stuff".  Me:  "well, sorry to say this, but your boss kinda sucks at her job".  Her (in extremely defensive tone): "No, actually she's really great, and that's why I choose to work for her".

Whatever.  Are you guys trying to run a business or just offering local comparative literature majors from Berkeley (I went there) and other trustafarians a place to hang out in between drum circles?

Because, from the hugely expensive advertisement you are running with Living Social (a deal that I personally choose not use, because I'd rather pay full price for a business that I am already aware of, and feel that groupon/LS/townhog/etc are generally bad for small businesses)....well, with that ad, it seems to me like you're trying to run a business.  But, the attitude among your customer-facing employees is rather abrasive, self-righteous, and unconcerned with customer service.  Embarrassingly so.  For example, one of your girls was essentially arguing with me (while eating her lunch at the juicing counter and not washing her hands before preparing a customer's juice  - totally unsanitary) and would not even come close to making an apology.  I told her I didn't think I would be back, and she said "well, that's your choice".  I don't think the owner (her boss) would like that very much.

I grew up with parents running a restaurant.  When you're out of something small like straws, or napkins or plastic forks or whatever else you might be out of.....there's a simple solution:  Go buy some with petty cash, or borrow some from your neighbors.  Apparently borrowing is not an option, because Lee's next door "hates Hannah" the other counter girl.

I'm all for health, all for juicing, shit, I'm all for smoking marijuana and spreading good vibes.  But, I'm also all for running a successful business.  And successful consumer businesses begin with good customer service.

I wonder how badly this place is in the red on a monthly basis.

Angela T-  I know you monitor these reviews.  I assume you're the owner, or boss lady that they were referring to.  I apologize for saying you suck at your job.  Maybe you have other things going on and can't give it the attention it requires.  At any rate, do you want a free business consultant?  I have a few very simple suggestions to help your business run more smoothly, retain its customer base (and acquire new ones without having to pay social deal sites), and get you profitable.  I really like your place, but the kids (or at least the vocal ones) are a bunch of self-righteous idiots that spend more time on their iPhones than doing actual work.  If you only productive workers, you could run that place with 3, instead of the 5 caltrans style crew you had there today.

Don't wanna sound like a smob but I'm kinda happy that it's pricey as that keeps the lines shorter! Still a good 15 min wait though..

Their bowls are $7.95 but for $4.95 you can get a "baby bowl" although you have to pay extra for "nutritional yeast" or any toppings which are included in the standard bowl.

I got the #3 quinoa, kale, garlic bowl. It was satisfying but definitely something I could throw together myself if I was given 15 mintues.. which ironically was how long I waited in line.

After reading the reviews.. I'm going to have to verify this microwaving plastic accusation. I can't believe they would do that??

I also tried their soup of the day.. it was $4.95 for a small and pretty watery. Definitely overpriced and not even that tasty.

    No seating!!

This is actually a decent restaurant.

There is seating for about a dozen patrons, and they have more than vegetarian food.  They don't have sodas, but they do have water and, um ...

Oh yeah.  Juice.  They have juice.

I met a friend here during lunch.  There wasn't a long wait, and they brought my sandwich to the table.  I ordered a salmon salad wrap for under $8.  The salmon was excellent, and the dressing on the salad complemented it perfectly.

The salads and sandwiches look decent, and the juices also look yummy (but whoa, pricey!)... but the build-a-bowl concept is where it's at.  I had the brown/red rice + lentils + broccoli + yellow coconut curry + cilantro + green onions combo.  I am not ashamed to confess that I licked the to go container clean when my coworkers weren't looking.

This place cooks like I do and I adore it.  Nothing fancy but clean, healthy, delicious goodness.

I'm a fan of almost any health food restaurant.  Power Source does some things I don't love, but I can't knock them because their build-a-bowls are awesome!

Don't waste your time with over-priced juices and lackluster sandwiches.  Get the build-a-bowl.  The salmon is cooked perfectly, the quinoa and kale are my favorite toppings and the garlic-tahini sauce is awesome!  So healthy it makes me want to run a marathon!

    FiDi Vegan Dreamfest.

Love going to a vegan-friendly lunch spot and seeing low prices, filling meals, organic produce and a green business certification. Meat and fish options are on offer for carnivores and pescaterians, and you can get yourself a home-made kombucha right out of their tap.

Fave choices at the Power Source include the build-a-bowls with quinoa, and the lunch box (as close as you'll get to a "value meal"): a sandwich/wrap with a side salad and your choice of 3 "snacks" (carrots & hummus, apple & pb or celery & pb) all for under $10.

    Woo, freaking, hoo.

Their juice is phenomenal. I actually dream about it (Valencia orange with lemon and ginger). I've had their vegan sandwiches, they were a bit small but their bowls are where it's at. Get the #1 with black and brown rice. Large. It'll make your head explode, yum!

Super packed around lunch so go early/late. It makes me smile that it gets crowded here. Being healthy and having vegan options in this area is fantastic, even if for most people it's only symbolic and/or convenient.

I really really like this place. I am not usually a health nut but these guys know how to take the rep that health food gets and make it delicious. I am a fan of the bowls with quinoa, roots, spicy peanut sauce and surachan. Soooo good. It's a lot of food though so be warned. If that doesn't sound great to you, the staff is very pleasant and always willing to offer a suggestion. I want to come back and try their sandwiches.

Kind of smallish inside so you have to order and carousel around the place which only has like 3 or 4 tables.

Food takes a little bit of time to prepare but it's worth it.
