So, we all know that Powell's has been looking pretty sad these past months.  As the previous owners looked for a buyer to take over the business, the candy stock dwindled down to nothing and the whole place had an air of sadness about it.  Thankfully, that time has passed.

Powell's has been transferred to new owners, who in a very short time have put life and joy back into this darling shop.  When I visited with my son this week, the store was packed with new candy, and tall, colorful displays made the shop look like the child's wonderland it should be. The new owner was walking through the crowd of customers, introducing herself and welcoming people back to Powell's.  There was an energy in the shop that was really wonderful to experience.  We all want our special, local businesses to survive and flourish.  I really hope that the ownership change will allow Powell's to do just that.  It's such a special part of downtown Novato.

My little boy eschews the fancy candy here (and there is tons to choose from).  He just likes to get a simple lollipop and then sit in the movie theatre seats at the back of the store to watch Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.  I can't resist the display of gourmet chocolates at the front counter.  Chocolate-covered salted caramels, truffles... yum.  There is truly something for everyone here.

Welcome back, Powell's and best of luck to the new owner!

Great selection of candies and gelatos. Good place to buy gifts and stocking stuffers.
I have a big quibble, however. Last time we were here, my boyfriend bought some candies from the bin. Licorice and jujube type candies...and they were stale! Hard and barely chewable. Same with one of the bar candies be got also.
I know economy is down and times are tough, but if you're gonna you gotta keep the inventory fresh! Check it regularly to make sure it's not past it shelf life!

If you ever wake up in the morning, with sore limbs, walk over to the mirror and say WTF, when did I grow up? Take a drive over to this sweet spot. The second you step foot in this magical place, you will be entranced with youth. You just can't help from feeling like a kid again.

From wall to wall, floor to ceiling this place is dripping with candy. From candy your grandma raved about to candy just created, they have it. I remember the first time I ventured in here, I almost cried I got so nostalgic. War heads? Now & Laters? Pop rocks? Ring pops? Candy necklaces? Cigarette bubble gum? oh em gee. They have it all.

Not to mention-- the Gelato. I have been to Italy, devoured in authentic Gelato and I have never tried any in the States that compared. This does. It is amazing. For some reason people think Gelato is more like ice cream than it really is. In reality Gelato is more icey than creamy but a combination of both. Powell's nails it.

This place will make you feel like a youngin again and everyone needs that every now and then :)

I've been back to Powell's several times since my original review, and thought now was as good a time as any to update it.

My Granddaughter LOVES Powell's I try to make a special trip once a month as a reward.  She always wants to watch Willy Wonka in the back.

The variety of candy seems to have changed, they no longer have Cup-o-Gold which is my favorite ... I love the many colors of M&M's.  Sadly, it is still not very disabled friendly, and there's not much they can do about that, and I'm still getting my Mike & Ikes, Hot Tamales, and Raisinette's at the Dollar Tree for a dollar.  I think the owner should look in to a different distributor for those types of candies so people will go to his shop instead of a large store like the Dollar Tree.

There's just nothing like a good old fashioned candy store, and I do hope Powell's will be around Novato for a long time!!!!

I don't even like sweets all that much, but this place is freaking rad.  They have almost every kind of candy I can think of.  And to top things off, they have a mini-movie theater in the back of the shop that runs the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder.

This place is full of interesting things to look at, movie memorabilia, disgusting looking "hamburger" marshmallow candy, novelty gum and a pirate that scares kids senseless.

It's fun to just take your time and look at everything, it made me feel like a kid again.

Powell's Sweet Shoppe..... you had me at Mallo (cups).

If you're the type who likes to take a walk down memory lane, step into Powell's. I walked through your door today and nearly dropped dead after eyeing your sweet, little bags of Golden Nugget chewing gum. *BAM!* I'm 6 years old again.

I mosey over to the Gelato counter and suddenly I'm 16. I had a job in high school at the Gelato Classico shop in Sacramento, where I lived off Coppa Mista and Caramel Pecan for 3 years of my life. Who says Italian ice cream doesn't make a sensible meal substitute?

Anyway, I could go on... But you put me over the top with your never-ending loop of Willy Wonka playing in the background. ".... Come with me.... and you'll be ..... in a world of pure imagination...."

I could die here a very happy woman.

Love this place! It has to be one of my favorite candy shops around.

    Pluses:

    - Willy Wonka playing in the background. Complete with vintage movie theatre seats!
    - Nostalgic candy from Abba Zabba to Zotz. For those of you "d'un certain age" you will appreciate the selection.
    - Good selection of British/Australian chocolates and candies. However, they do not stock jelly babies (one of my personal faves).
    - Humorous candy. Loved the "We met on Facebook" gum.
    - Open pretty late for a candy shop! Until 9:00 when we were there.

    Minuses:

    - Overwhelming tendency to spend too much money on sugary items. (It is not the cheapest candy store...but you don't come here to score a bargain.)

I cracked up at seeing the local teenagers hanging out at the corner in front of this place trying to stare me down. I mean, they did try to put on a tough front, but how intimidating are Marin County teenagers wearing designer jeans?

I've actually been to this location several times and I've never thought that the owner was rude in the slightest bit. I've had a few extended conversations with him, especially when they first opened. He's always been very friendly and sincere.
I think that they have an amazing selection of candy and even some really old fashioned toys as well and new weird little trinkets.

There are actually a few holes in Raine D's  review. If she can only go in at 10:00am, then why does she wait in the car until past 10:30?
The prices are too high but she doesn't mind paying high prices? Then is that a downfall?  Either Yelp itself or a competitor is at work here.

As far as the rices go, yes they are a little bit higher for some things, but not everything. It is a privately owned franchise, when you purchase one of these stores the main corporation makes you sign a contract stating that you carry everything that they require so that all of the Powell's candy stores across the country will be uniform.
All of the product is purchased from the main corporation, as well and they also dictate the pricing.

I like Powell's because even though there is a larger corporate "ownership" there is also a local business person running the shop in your town and it does have a local feel to it.

I like places like this because I can find Moon Pies and Abba Zaba bars and all that other candy I had when I was growing up (although I didn't see any Astro Pops). But you will pay for the novelty of it all. I bought three candy stocking stuffers for the tune of $7.23. That's kind of nuts.

This place is also small and packed with merchandise and it attracts a lot of children who are all losing their minds because -  well, they're kids in a candy shop. Which I think should not come as any surprise to shoppers - but you may want to avoid weekend afternoons if a scene like this is too overwhelming for you.

Vintage customer service.  The kind of service that actors portray in 1950's-themed movies.  Despite what time you go, how many people are milling around the counter, how indecisive you are, the customer service is consistently great.  And that is a HUGE plus with me.

Also, I will never again have to settle for a "whimsical" or halfway-decent-trying-to-be-funny birthday, anniversary, new baby (even new DOG!!!!) or get well card at Walgreens or Longs.  They really do have the best selection of greeting cards that crack me up even before I've been next door to Finnegan's.

Their truffles are divine, their gelato is heavenly, they show Willy Wonka on a loop with theater chairs in back of the store so you can just chill and watch some Oompa Loompa action.  They have an amazingly huge selection of old-school candy:  not just your average 80s candy like Pop Rocks or Nerds, but Bit O' Honey, Chick-o-Stick, Nik L Nip, Big Hunk, SkyBar, Mary Janes, Zagnut (that's a great name for a band, by the way) and even candy cigarettes and candy buttons.  Goo Goo Cluster anyone?

Anyway, a great addition to the increasingly welcoming Grant Avenue.  I love you guys, Powells!

I love CANDY, not chocolate, but candy, I can't enough, and when I walked into Powell's Sweet Shoppe I thought that my head might explode, ya know in a good way.

Bins of old fashioned candy from Abba Zabbas, to pixie stix, to hard candies, to lemon heads, to salt water taffy (too name a few of about 200). Fill up a bag of jelly bellys from assorted, to island punch, to juicy pear, to licorice, to cinnamon, or to pink grapefruit (my all time favorite.) Then move over to the "gummy" section and scoop up some coke bottles or swedish fish or licorice bits. Head over to the jars of jawbreakers (they come in all sizes), then make your way over to the old-fashioned gum section (they can be found in pull-out drawers that used to house the dewey decimal cards at libraries).

Don't miss the back of the store where you can sit down and watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which runs continually. Of course there's a ton of candy back there too, plus some old school novelty items. I even saw a Wonder Woman lunch box.

This is the place I told my mom I would come to as an adult when she refused to buy me candy. Retribution at long last.

A kid in a candy store -that's how I felt when I walked into this air-conditioned store filled to the ((brim)) with all sorts of sweet treats.  From past to current goodies, your eyes will be overstimulated by the vast assortments of candies from jaw breakers to gummie bears.  I almost expected to see an old fashioned soda shoppe counter too with a Richie Cunningham like look alike behind the counter...no such luck.

I wish their website would give glimpses of what the store's like (or what kinds of candies they have), but I guess you'll just need to visit.  Looks like they've got stores sprinkled throughout California.

Dentists will be happy this place is around.  Just remember to brush after every meal.

If I could afford it, I would quit my job and go work here. Talk about Heaven on Earth!

A bright, happy, colorful store with *everything* your little sweet tooth could dream of or want. I like how they have little sections of different types of candy, like mints, gum and chocolate bars. They had some really neat and interesting chocolate bars that I'd never seen before, they're a little pricey ($3+) but worth it for packaging alone!

I picked up some sour nerds, Fizzies, Mars Bar, Yorkie and some some other bar that was like a Twix but not (all direct imports from Ireland), rainbow Twizzlers, Zots and a Willy Wonka Mix Up (Mini Chewy Shock Tarts, Spree and regular Shock Tarts all in the same bag!) to blog about on http://www.christinesc... all for about $30 but I could have bought SO much more!

Loved the movie theater seats and flat screen playing Willy Wonka in the back of the store, just too perfect.

I hear there is another one of these in Los Gatos, gotta check it out!

Coming into this place is Mildly Overwhelming.

There are songs about sweet things blarring on the loud system, chocolate filled movies adorn the big  screen "theatre" in the back of the shop...

But most of all, THE SELECTION. I was suddenly transported back to Broomfield, CO. Age 8-10 (?), starring @ the shelves with my dad, telling me I could pick ONE. I knew I had to choose wisely!

Holy Geeze, SIXLETS?! Dood, how many years has it been since I've seen those? I used to Love those little circles of  colored greatness. I mean, it's sort-of sad that I wouldn't eat them anymore (ignorance is only bliss at rare times in my food world these days)...
    But,  THAT IS RAD!

I had a good time there. I got something yummy  too. Powell's is the best thing I found while strolling around Novato.

I would like to comment on this review below.  (My comment is at the bottom).

    True story:
Had some great gelato here and was a big fan...Then, the last time I went in, the girl who was waiting on my partner and me (yes, I mean 'me') was *playing with her hair* while we decided what flavors we wanted. ok, not great. My mind immediately goes something like this: "Is this a place where they put on gloves, I can't remember ever seeing them wear gloves, but hopefully since she's playing with her hair they do because I just want some yumminess and I don't want to cause a scene"...Nopers! Not only did she not put on gloves or stop playing with her hair, she proceeded to take her ponytail down, turn over at the waist, REPEATEDLY RUN HER FINGERS THROUGH HER HAIR, and then flip back up and re-do her ponytail. All while standing inches from the gelato, not to mention EW, hands in hair then serving me.

So then she asked us if we'd made our decision...Um, yes, I had. I told her we'd changed our minds, paid for the candy in my hand, and left.

Called and made sure I was talking to the owner about this little episode and he was quite rude and so, SOOOOO UNHELPFUL. After I related the problem, he actually says to me "so what exactly was the problem?" UM??? So I explained that it was unsanitary. He seemed surprised that I would consider that gross! He was disinterested in talking to me and completely obtuse about the whole thing. He went on and on about how popular the place is and how he's never heard this kind of complaint before. He was very disbelieving that it had happened at all, then when he finally realized "Oh, yeah, food service is supposed to be SANITARY and I'm the owner of a place that serves food, gee, maybe I better make sure this doesn't happen again", he still *didn't apologize*. "Well, which girl was it?" he finally asked me and I explained I wasn't trying to get anyone in trouble, I just wanted to make sure this didn't happen again b/c I loves the gelato. Anyway, he kept acting as if he had no responsibility at all for the behavior of his workers.

Then to top it all off, he had the audacity to tell to me that it was probably a worker who was an "immigrant" whose behavior I witnessed! (Both of the workers that day appeared to be and sounded Hispanic, which FTR would normally not even be mentioned b/c obvs it's not important.) HI, dude, that's pretty racist an attitude. So that sealed it for me: not going to patronize this person's business ever again. It's a shame b/c of my sweet tooth, but thems the breaks - sometimes the cute little candy shop is owned by a meany.

THIS IS NOT A TRUE STORY!

I know the owner of Powell's Sweet Shoppe. This is a sounding board for people with legitimate reviews, good or bad. What you have written is total garbage! How would you feel if you were trying to run a business and someone writes a disgusting lie which you have made up.   GET A LIFE.

Powell's Sweet Shoppe turned me into Veruca Salt as soon as I walked in the store. I wanted it ALL! It took all my self control to stop myself from dancing and singing through the store. Eventually, I comprised on the creme brulee gelato which was the most fantastic thing I have ever had.

Words cannot describe the selection of candy that is available and the employees were helpful in narrowing down my selection As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is not cheap, but its worth every penny.

This place is awesome.. my latest score was a big bag of Jelly Bellys (mostly Juicy Pear), jujubees, and gummy fighter planes (why get bears when you could get fighter planes?).  I think it was $7.99/pound.

My dad really likes English candy and they have a good selection here - he always gets the Rowntree Fruit Pastiles.

Every time I go in there they have Willy Wonka on the TV.. must drive the employees nuts..

This place is seriously as good as it gets.  The gelato is incredible and what began as a nice special occasion treat has now turned into an ugly addiction and its not pretty, yet its oh so yummy.

Sometimes when I walk in I get a little overwhelmed, between the novelty gum, the old fashion chocolate bars and the bulk candy its likely that you could find yourself in a fetal position sucking on a giant lollipop. So its best to decide what you want in advance, strategize and, in my case, head straight for the gelato.  Part of the strategizing, ask for at least two free samples, but in the end choose the caramel, nutty chocolaty one.

The one downfall,  you will go to sleep with the melody of shirley temple's on the good ship lollipop song stuck in your head.  However, they tell me they have a new radio station contract so maybe there will be more choices.

All I can say is Mr. or Ms Powell, whoever you are, I love you, please don't ever go away.  As a matter of fact, I'm on my way!

This is one of the most incredible candy shops I have ever been in, My god, Spock, they have a 'wall - o - Pez'!!!! Not only that, but for the past 6 years I have bribed, begged and cajoled friends and family to bring Smarties when they come from Canada. And now I can get them at Powells.
Not only that, they have a lovely english section with Maltesers, Curly Wurly's and the one and only delectable Coffee Crisp. Life is once again worth living - thank-you Powell's Sweet Shoppe!

This place is really adorable and has that nostalgic vintage penny candy shop atmosphere.  Their candy selection seems really good and there are always happy families there.  I went twice recently for their gelato, and found it to be average.  Their flavors were quite good, but the texture of the gelato itself made me wonder if it was extra rich ice cream or not so creamy gelato.  As far as I know there aren't really any other places in downtown Novato to go for gelato, but there are far better gelatos in the county.

Tons of candy, some of which you haven't seen for years and much of which you've probably never heard of before. Gelato, too.

Go to the back where you can watch Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on a big screen TV. Prices at Powell's can be out of sight, especially on the more obscure items.

Oh my, this place should be on those lists of 100 things to see before you die. Mind you, if it existed in Houston I suspect many of us would die a lot sooner. Imagine your favorite candies from childhood, trips to foreign countries, gourmet chocolate stores. Then put them all in a magical place with theater seats in front of a screen showing Willy Wonka, so you can get your sugar high in entertained comfort. Then add a sprinkle of outrageously delicious gelato and boom, you have entered the worlde of Powellse sweete shoppe.

One stop short of walking into Willie Wonka's factory, this place will make you want to run around like a...well, kid in a candy shop. The staff is friendly. They carry items from the east coast that people spend the time to seek out specifically.  The sorbet/gelato/ ice cream bar is enough to kick the diet to the curb! ;)  Definitely worth a walk around...

Adorable old fashioned candy shoppe. You'll find comical gum neatly displayed in a wooden library card catalog. Barrels of candy from floor to ceiling, both old and new. They even have Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory playing in the back, complete with seating, and signed memorabilia from the cast. The gelato is divine and the chocolate treats behind the case are decadent. My daughter and I love visiting the shoppe for the ambiance, service ... and yeah ... the sweets don't hurt either.

I think I just found my favorite thing about working in Novato: Powell's Sweet Shoppe.  It's a candy store located in downtown Novato (which looks like a movie set circa 1962, btw).  It's total candypalooza in there - it's almost overwhelming.  And it's funny how there were almost no kids in there - it was all adults shopping and squealing over the vast candy selection.  When I walked in the first thing I saw was packages of the hazelnut wafer cookies that my mom used to buy me when I was little.  It was a pretty tame first visit - I got my favorite Jelly Belly flavors, Toasted Marshmallow and Margarita (not together), and I couldn't resist a couple of Ice Cubes, another childhood favorite.  And even though I'm the kind of person who sneers at smokers, I loved that they carry another old favorite -- bubblegum cigarettes!  So wrong, yet so fun.  I wonder if I can order in bulk for Halloween...

Update: 2nd visit.  They've got Cadbury's Flake, my favorite English chocolate bar!  And it's fresh, unlike the ones they sell at Cost Plus, which can be a bit stale.  And they carry lots of games & fun trinkets - it's the perfect place to shop for your next kid's birthday party.  On this visit I found even more candy that I haven't seen in years.  Remember dots, those weird sugar candies that are basically colored sugar blobs glued on to pieces of paper?  And Fun Dip - those packets where you dip the white sticks into packets of flavored sugar?  I couldn't resist getting one.  I foresee a major sugar high in my near future.

If you need nostalgia, drop in to Powells.  they have all the good old
favorites and great new stuff too.
It's a bit pricey and kind of a shock when you see something
that cost 25 cents back in the day but you pay more than a dollar for it
now.  yipes, am I that old?

Powell's is a trip back to your child hood.  It's reminiscent of the 5 and dime that I used to walk to when I was a kid(just a bit pricier, I still spend my full allowance, but my allowance is for a family).  It has the added charm of having a large selection of difficult to find European candy.  Having grown up on the east coast and Europe it's always memory lane to visit Powell's.

    Best candy store in Marin.

You name it, they've got it.

Pink popcorn, Blackjack gum, EVERY kind of licorice and bubble gum ever invented, fine chocolate, italian gelato, jawbreakers, oversized lollipops, wonka bars, everything.

There isn't anything you can't find here.

    Willy Wonka would be proud.

There are candy stores, and then there are CANDY stores- Powell's definitely falls in the latter category.  They have practically every candy imaginable- nearly every color of M&M's to Gummy Clown Fish (one of my favs).  But this isn't a run-down sweet shop- a plasma TV shows "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but has that old-school, heart-warming charm that you expect from a candy store.  Check out Powell's for unusual sweets and friendly service

I love Powells.  I do.  With Willy Wonka on constant play in the back, and fun and interesting holiday treats up front, you seriously can't go wrong.  I adore their Gelato (try the Espresso and Cookies & Cream), and frequently fill up a back of gummies to take home with me.  It is a great place if you need little basket filler type gifts for the person who has everything, including a sweet tooth.  They have nostalgia candy, modern candy, and candy just for fun.  Plus they have specialty made candy in the case like honeycomb- yummy!

THANK you for introducing me into the world of no end in candy. And thank you AGAIN for bringing it to Petaluma! I love the chocolate-covered smores (and you thought you knew good sweets..). About 20 seconds in the microwave + glass of milk = no turning back.

If you're familiar with the phrase "like a kid in a candy store", this is the metaphorical store that the kid is running through.  An amazing selection including a lot of stuff you thought they stopped making decades ago, presented with a well-executed Willy Wonka flair.
