Q: Where can you go and watch the full-length feature 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' whilst surrounded by chocolate?

Q: Where can you find novelty chocolate bars for all occasions?

Q: Is there a place around here that serves delicious gelato?

Q: Where can I find awesome vintage bottled soda?

Yes, the rumours are true. Powell's. Go here. Actually, I will amend that. Run there, now. Take someone who will permit you to be a kid again and will join you in the Ooh'ing and Ahh'ing that will ensue. That is all.

The golden standard for candy/sweet shops. Who cares if it's a chain, it's the best! By far the best gelato in town, and amazing selection of chocolates and candies.

My favorite part is the collection of boutique sodas/pops across from the gelato counter. If you want an old-school Dr. Pepper, or 8 different sarsaparillas/root beers, start trying them! My ladyfriend bought several of them for me to try and packed them in a cooler for a birthday trip.

Stop in and feel like a kid again, life's too short to skip over Powell's!

My sweet tooth has been going CRAZY the past few weeks!!  I really enjoy this place though they are a little overpriced.  They really do have anything and everything.  Even a wide variety of bacon chocolate and other bacon things o_O.  The store always has something new and different in it so it's worth multiple trips.

Along with many types of packaged candies and chocolates, they also have bin candy, a case full of truffles and that kind of thing, and gelato.  I tried the Coppa Mista and White Chocolate Raspberry gelato and it was really good.  You get a lot for the price, plus one of those cool straw cookies that are delicious.  I don't know of any other place you can get gelato around here, so I have to say this is the best! haha.

I wouldn't wanna work here tho.  Not only would I weigh 914871039478 pounds but also I'd get super sick of Willy Wonka.  It plays on their TV 24/7.

This place is amazing! So much vintage stuff, plus Gelato!

My friends took me to Long Beach for my birthday, and this shop was probably my favorite place in the whole area.

Walking in, you immediately can tell it's a vintage type store. Everything's wooden, and they've got these big wooden chests and such, with drawers open and filled with old fashion sweets, toys, or other novelty items. They've got these novelty glass bottled sodas too. I got a Ghost Buster's tin there with green slime candy. They have an area in the back devoted to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and they even have the first version of the movie playing. They also have this drawer full of chocolate bars with interesting and hilarious boxes and wrapping. They don't mind you picking up stuff and playing with them.

Their gelato's pretty great too, which was the main reason we went there. They give out samples, and have a large variety of flavors to choose from. They give you plenty in their mini sized cup too! At first, the gelato kind of looked melty, but it wasn't. And the taste and texture was great. All three of us were satisfied with the gelato. We probably spent at least an hour in that little shop.

Great for kids and adults!

This is absolutely one of my favorite spots on earth!!  It's a struggle to not spend a ton of $$ here when I visit.  So many of my childhood favorites are here that it's difficult to make a decision.  Can't find what you want, talk to the owners Nick and Judy and they'll help you out.  The only down side of this is the teenage employees who really don't seem to care too much about their jobs.

Iggy and Kate sang it best: "Candy Candy Candy I can't let you go!"
At Powell's you certainly won't have to let any candy go...BUT you would need a gigantic Mack truck to get it home.

If you have a sweet tooth or even the faintest craving for a dash of sweetness, take some time and peruse the store, they WILL have something for you.

There is chocolate candy,  fruit candy, hard candy, soft candy, gummy candy, retro candy, cotton candy, sour candy, spicy candy, sugar free candy, mints, lunchboxes, collectibles, Pez Dispensers, Pez refills, Gigantic Pez Dispensers, there is a whole wall dedicated to POP ROCKS, super fun self-adhesive bandages, lollipops, tiny candy, gigantic candy, jaw breakers, candy lipstick, toys, Wonka Bars...I think you get the point.

On my last trip there, I was searching for the old-formula Sweethearts candy, which they did not have.  They DID have rolls of Necco wafers which saved the day.  I hope that either the Sweethearts candy goes back to it's original flavorings OR they NEVER ever ever change Necco wafer flavors, they are my only hope.
So, I purchased Necco wafers and a candy called Valomilk.  I can't seem to get enough marshmallow when mixed with chocolate and the display described the candy in these words: "Creamy Flowing Marshmallow In Two Milk Chocolate Cups".  This surely isn't a review of Valomilk and I don't blame Powell's for this but this candy is just WRONG...ha ha ha.  You can literally pour the marshmallow in your mouth.  EW. EW. EW.

I love Powell's, it is a great place to find candy that you know and love and on the flip-side it is a great place to find candy that you have never heard of.  My sweet teeth love Powell's Sweet Shoppe...every single one of them.

Just too cute.

Old-Fashioned stuff from our youth. And our parent's youth.

And hilarious mints and car air fresheners and novelty items like 'Leninade'

Little pricey- it was crowded, you're doing decent business, do you have to charge me $8 for the slinky my kid just had to have?

Never mind, it's still fun. I'll be back when I have an hour or more to wander around.

Warning::::: They had a sign up saying that the manufacturer is discontinuing Wonka Bars.

Great old school lunch boxes :)

That's the best thing I have to say about this place.  The next coolest thing I saw were the M&M's by color. Sic. So we got a bag to match the house and now they are sitting in a beautiful little place blending in ever so nicely.  Yes, there is TONS of candy. Yes, anyone could go nuts in here. But I was looking for some more of the actual OLD FASHIONED candy. Lemondrops, please?

Overall it was great if you need a quirky, silly gift or just want some candy. If you have a sweet tooth and aren't looking for the old fashioned candy I expected you may want to give this funny little place a try.

Well, tie me up with Twizzlers and drown me in Ghiradelli chocolate! I've died and gone to heaven...in the form of Powell's Sweet Shoppe, that is. Dentists and diabetics beware! Sugar fiends and six-year-olds rejoice! You'll find almost all of your childhood favorites in this corner-to-corner collection of candied confections. I know I did.

I'd heard about Powell's from a few friends and had been meaning to stop by. Unfortunately, stopping by a candy shop after cupcakes (Frosted Cupcakery) or gelato down the street is rather redundant. Well, I finally made it over a while back and I can't wait to drop in for another shipment of candy.

This place is not only full of candy, but I was pleased to discover that they also serve gelato. Had I known this on my last visit to the area, I would have just headed straight to Powell's. Collectibles and random trinkets can also be found here. I had flashbacks from elementary school when I saw their collection of old-school metal lunchboxes. Heck, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" playing on the television at the back of the store even reminded me of my childhood.

The nostalgia that Powell's evokes is something rare. Sure a trip to Toys 'R' Us makes you feel like a kid again, but you easily get lost amongst the new-fangled hi-tech toys they have nowadays. Stepping into Powell's jogs your memories of the ice cream man, childhood candy shops, and sharing candy with your friends and classmates. You can't help but smile when you rediscover candy you haven't tasted or seen in years. This is what makes Powell's so great.

Aside from the spotty service, Powell's is a great stop, be it for the kids, for a quick shopping break, or just to beat the heat. Definitely check it out if you're in the area. And don't forget to bring your toothbrush, floss, and insulin.

Just being in the store makes me feel like I should be a diabetic.

I love their Gelatto here.

The Cafe Mocha is nice.  The White Chocolate Raspberry was delicious but not as good as being in cheesecake formation. We usually get a Child's size ($2.95) and get 2 flavors to in one cup.  Peanut Butter Chocoalte was EXTRA peanutty!

Lots of cool and "fun" candies you can buy.

They sell the Bacon accessories here if you need to go Xmas shopping. Bacon Board Game, Bacon Wallet, Bacon Belt, and Bacon Beans and Bacon bandages.

haha i would wanna be a kid in THIS CANDY STORE! i can't believe they put so much yummy, sugary nostalgic and just plain AWESOME stuff in one store! i especially liked all the different chocolate bars and mints- haha the choco-scope bar was so true! i was also impressed by their expansive collection of pez dispensers- i've never seen so many in my life!
i like that you can come in and walk around without necessarily buying anything and they don't care- but if you don't wanna take a trip down sugary memory lane, you have to at least try their gelato! i got the banana split, which was creamy you could still taste the different components (chocolate, strawberry and banana gelatos marbled together). their chocolate hazelnut is pretty rich- it reminded me of eating a slightly less thick spoonfull of nutella, so beware if youre not used to the artery clogging-ness of gelato :) the vanilla bean was good, but pretty much tasted like a gelato version of haagen dazs.

Wow.......... That place is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! This isn't your mall candy store with plastic bins everywhere charging you insulting prices for cheap bulk candy....... Powell's is pure character. I had a big stupid grin on my face while wondering around the store dazed and confused. Every single nook and cranny of this store has something. There's baskets on the floor full of candy, book shelves full of candy, even an old library card catalog cabinet full of vintage gum. I was so overwhelmed I had no idea where to start.

The store has little themed areas such as suckers, sour, vintage, gum, novelty, chocolate bars, humorous, sugar free, willy wonka brand, British imports, and a bulk bin section in the back. Unlike the mall candy stores the bulk stuff here is only a tiny portion of this place. They even have gelato! Next to the register is the more fancy stuff such as truffles, chocolate covered oreos, giant peanut butter cups, and other stuff.

Since I was here by myself I tried to get a sampling that both myself and my wife would like. I got different suckers such as cotton candy, watermelon, and lime flavors. I got a caramel mouse chocolate bar, jaw breakers, rock candy, sour sweet tart looking things, valomilk, retro flying saucer wafers filled with candy beads, popcorn bars, and 6 truffles(Orange cream, smores, chocolate carmel).... All in all I spent about 28 bucks!!

Some of the stuff was pricey but for the most part I thought it was nice prices. The bulk stuff for example was only $8 something a pound..... at the mall it's about $12. This isn't your everyday candy store but a place of "pure imagination". Just like Craig R's review states, that song from Willy Wonka was playing so I assume it loops at that point. Based on what I'm reading from other people's reviews there is allot of stuff I missed, so next time I go I'll make sure to take my wife and get two sets of eyes scanning around for goodies.

Scrumpdiddlyumptious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call me Veruca!

This place has got some serious candy- things you would think you'd never find in one shop. You can spend hours finding so many different, cool and nostalgic treats. They have case of chocolate truffles and serve gelato even! There's a HUGE pez section, M & Ms, the biggest jelly belly display i've ever seen, tons of old school favorites like abba zabba and zagnut.
The even have Vosges chocolate bars (still 8 bucks tho) and lots of other hard to find chocolate bars. They have cute pillows in candy brands, awesome candy tote bags, a big soda selection,  and tons of lollis.

A must stop for belmont shore. !!! You won't be disappointed!

It's a candy shop on 2nd St. Not like See's or anything. It's more of a novelty candy shop. There are lots of random candies and goodies that you wouldn't expect to see normally. Powell has lots of goodies from all over the world, some old, some new. One candy that shocked me to see was Valomilk.

Yeah, it's the old adage of a kid in a candy store. But Powell's is definitely THE Candy Store. I would like them to open an hour or two later to satisfy the late-nite crowd, but I suppose you can't win them all.

Rumors have such a bad rap. People always scoff, "That's just a rumor." Well, I've got news for you...the rumors are effin' true. So true. Powell's is seriously the best shop EVER.

I knew I was in love as soon as I saw that they store all of their bubble gum in a card catalog. A freakin' card catalog!! It's like someone was reading my mind on the coolest store displays ever, and executed them to perfection. A card catalog! I still can't get over it. I'm in love. And I haven't even gotten to their selection of bubble gum, which is vast. They've got the fully retro, and even the semi-retro - Fruit Stripe?! Remember that stuff.

This is the perfect place for nostalgia. Any candy you remember as a kid, they'll have here. Well...with one exception...no Lucas or Limón candy or saladitos...so, everything you remember from all of your white friends. Still, I was drooling over the pez display and the bajillion flavors of saltwater taffy.

And it's not all retro stuff either. They have an entire section devoted to bacon related candy. Bacon chocolate, strawberry flavored gummy bacon, bacon mints...the list goes on. And all sorts of other new-fangled candy, this entire station where you fill up a tube with some kind of weird sour powder candy, a wall of pop rocks, m&m's by color, and gelato!

Pretty much every gift I give anyone from now on is going to have something from Powell's. That's for certain. So...hopefully all my friends love bacon chocolate.

Halvah bars, Chocolate galore, gelato, old candy bars and toys? YES PLEASE!!!

Powell's has really out done themselves with themes, candy's by era and lots more. As soon as you walk through the doors the smells and sounds make you feel like a kid again. For candy, if you can imagine it, they have it. I was even surprised to see the young kids working there so knowledgeable about the products and seemingly happy to be there. Like a kid in a candy shop I suppose.

Powell's is definitely a great place to grab a nostalgic gift, shop around in or just swing by for a cup of yummy ice cream.

One word describes this place:  OMG!  (Or is that three?)

We wandered into Powell's during a walk after enjoying a nice Kayak trip "on the Water".

Powell's IS the best Candy Shoppe!  They have EVERYTHING from Gelato, to Bacon flavored chocolate, to Habenero pops, to Cheese and Bacon Larvae (aka. worms!)  MMMMMmmmm!

The decor was cool, too.  In the back they were playing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on a big LCD.  Surrounding the TV were autographed pictures of the actors that played Veruca Salt, Mike Teevee, and Augustus Gloop, and the other kids in the movie -- only they were all grown up and the pictures were of them signing autographs in the Shoppe!

It just sucks that the next nearest one is in Laguna Niguel.  They need to open one in L.A.!  Franchise Opportunity, anyone??

CANDY! CANDY! I WANT CANDY!
I absolutely HAVE to stop here every time I come back to my LBC hometown. ABSOFRIGGINLUTELY have to pop into Powell's sweet shoppe. They have every kind of candy you can imagine. You can select how much candy you want and buy mix matched bags by the lb.
Huge dispensers full of m and ms of every color, gummi bears, sharks, worms and fish of all sizes, red and black licorice twists and vines of sweet, salty, and sour varieties. They even have bins of old fashioned candy  that your grandma probably enjoyed in her day like jujubees and horehound. There are also a ton of candy bar selections.
It is a great place for kids and  kid gift ideas. They have a kitschy selection of vintage lunchboxes with old fashioned comic book characters and some magic/gag toy products in the corner of the store.
Just walk in and you will experience a flashback to your best childhood candy memories. When I was a kid we used to get those yellow chick shaped marshmallow peeps for easter.  Now and laters remind me of catty jr. high girls in the '80s. The fresh saltwater taffy reminds me of a family summer road trip to Pismo Beach.   A serious assortment of chocolate and their gelato selection brings me back to a college trip in Europe.
There is something for everyone here. Its a great place to come any day and for any occasion but it is especially nice if you are feeling down and need your spirits lifted.

I found a new place for my black licorice gummy bear fix!

I almost missed them too because they are all the way in the back of the store in the bottom left hand candy bin. They didn't want me to find them for some reason, but they should have tried harder. I didn't actually buy any though. I was there for a birthday party and I already had bag full of candy, which surprisingly still has candy left in it. I just couldn't add anymore to it. This gives me a reason to come back... okay so it gives me ANOTHER reason to come back.

This was stop number one in the multi-venue birthday party we were attending. Powell's has a scavenger hunt that they do for those celebrating a birthday with friends. They hand out maps which pictures of candy (mini/fun sizes only) and you have to run around the store looking for them all. There were thirty-one candies on the list, but three were blacked out (distribution reasons), which they made up for after the hunt was complete. When the hunt was over, we got to keep all the candy, which they put into a little bag for us and we ended it the hunt with a small gelato. I almost got pistachio nut, but at the last moment got the spumoni, which turned out to be the better choice.

Since our group was made up of adults, the store had a special adults game that we got to play. (This game was held prior to the scavenger hunt) We split up into teams and were each handed a ring of cards that had pictures of partial candy logos. The team who finished the fastest got a little prize. Unlike the other game, we couldn't keep these candies.

*sad face*

Not that big a deal. They gave us plenty.

I spent so much time running around looking for specific candy that I didn't get a chance to really take the whole place in. I'm going to need to go back soon, pick up some gummy bears, browse a bit. The only thing I ended getting than wasn't food was a tin of toast bandages. Which came in hand after an interesting drunken Sunday night. *rubs his knee* Ouch.

THIS is modern day man's version of willy wonka's chocolate factory. almost every candy imaginable. from candy covered bugs to candy covered candy. it's stacked floor to ceiling, wall to wall. i'll be surprised if you can't bite the door handles off the door or lick the floor of sugar. the big question: is this is a dentist's dream or nightmare?

YUM x a million.

candy everywhere! wall to wall, the only place that there isnt is the tv playing willy wonka and the chocolate factory over and over again. they have all types of candy and gum, chocolate, taffy-- you name it, its here! :] they also have ice cream, in which i did not get a chance to try-- but it looked delicious. its not one of those stores that sell nostalgic candy for an arm and a leg-- everything is reasonably priced.

check it out! just FYI its on second street-- so parking is metered! bring lots of change & patience to find a spot. trust me its worth it! :]

Candysprinkedcupcakeheartpuppyeyedsugarylovecloud with a  pinch of sugar on top!

Yep.... That is what it is like walking into this place.. I swear that the minute you walk threw the door, it is like walking threw a time machine, whether you are 7 or 77 there is  a memory planted somewhere in this store... They have so much stuff, they have more candy then any one will ever need!

(+'s)
-CANDY MADE DREAMS
- they have like every version of candy land through out the years plastered on the walls....
-a little toy land in the back of the store can be found
-Willy Wonka is ALWAYS playing
-Variety beyond belief
-Gelato
-Super rad lunch boxes
-Gag gifts
-Fun times....

(-'s)
- Negative one star for the open candy bins where you put candy in bags and weigh it... (to no fault of their own...) There are little kiddy folks with dirty little hands that grab right in and eat the candy  -HELLO PARENTS GROSS! WAKE UP!-
-A little pricey, but they are in Belmont Shores, enough said....
-Parking

Have fun and brush your teeth!

Evil!  This place is evil!!!

I took my friend's daughter out for a belated birthday dinner and afterward we ended up here.  This is what conniving new teenagers do.  They and their evil ways take you to evil places.  How does an empty basket suddenly become brimming with things that I didn't put in there in seconds?  Big, flashing neon arrow pointing to my evil sidekick.

The entire store is one big display of impulse-buy products!  There's no use trying to fight or resist, but I'm the pack leader here! Put that back, you!

After weighing out the pros, cons, perceived value, nostalgic worth, bang for buck, etc. of each candy item, I eventually narrowed down my selections and walked out with jordan almonds, gummy fried eggs, a milk chocolate almond bar, and Reese's pieces.  $14 worth of candy???  I haven't paid that much for candy since Catholic grade school,  when I forked out allowance money to buy the leftover Helen Grace chocolate eggs needed to send me to Disneyland!

Really, I would just like to give this place the finger...in some gelato...hands in the jelly beans...face buried in sour gummy worms...mmm.

Star deduction: I think we caught the cashier coming down off of hi sugar high.  He was a grumpy lil bastard.

I can't wait to become a dad when I realize there are places like this in the world.  This is without a doubt the most amazing candy shop or shoppe I have ever stepped foot in!  It's honestly the FAO Schwarz of candy stores.  As my wife and I were walking out and I had pillaged my wallet... much to my sweet tooth's delight, a young mom walked in with her one year old son declaring, "All right Honey, you can pick out one thing."  This is a store where that might just be impossible!  The photos and the web-site just can't do it justice, you need to go there, all the hype is true in this case...just go already!

Who can take a sunrise,
Sprinkle it with dew,
Cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two?
The Candy Man!
The Candy Man can.
The Candy Man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good.

Powell's has the best candy selection around! If you are looking for your mainstream candy bar, Powell's can help you. But if you are looking for old school candies (such as Mary Jane, Necco, Beechies gum, etc.) Powell's can definitely help you! Powell's specializes in candies from the good ol' days, but keeps a ready supply of mainstream candy. They also have a great selection of UK candies and exotic chocolates.
