Review Highlights
Gosh I wish they had one of these in socal. I got the roast beef hot with lettuce, mayo, cheese, mustard, tomatos... on whole wheat bread.. it might have been multigrain. YUM.
Hubby and I were really hungry when we ate this, but still we know what's good. The beef was awesomely flavorful and the bread was wonderfully soft. And the cheese was melted. I don't kow what made it so good because Subway has the same ingredients, but if you're ever in DC stop by any Potbelly's because it's really really tasty.
Everyone has their own personal, fool proof hangover cure. Some like greasy diner food. Others prefer sleeping for 16 hours straight. My cure is a turkey on wheat, hold the mayo and cheese. What is it about those magical hot peppers combined with toasted bread that makes me feel whole again? Whatever it is, I know I can always depend on my favorite sandwich shop in Van Ness to get me through. And trust me, there are plenty of sandwich shops in Van Ness. Quiznos, Subway, Jerry's, and even Epicurean makes sandwiches.
The employees at this particular Potbellys are great. They are cheerful, efficient, and they keep the place very clean. If I come in close to closing time, they occasionally throw in a free cookie. Even if I'm not recovering from a massive headache, potbelly's always hits the spot.
I wish places like this existed in Boston. Live blues music at lunchtime? YES PLEASE! Delicious, cheap sandwiches? YES PLEASE! Fast, friendly service? YES PLEASE!
I left this place satisfied, relaxed, and happy. Oh, and check out George Castanza in the bathroom!
Few things come in to our lives that make living all the more worthwhile.
Potbelly is better than sex. Yes, I've had my fair share of sex; and furthermore, my fair share of Potbelly. For all of the nay-sayers out there, while I am never bitter toward other reviewers or opinions on this website, can go right ahead and go f*ck themselves.
First off - what other establishment would write a letter APOLOGIZING for raising sandwich prices? These guys know how to operate a business. The employees are cheerful and embrace what they do, and I've been able to have enjoyable service, quality conversation, and sometimes a free cookie.
I will not waste your time describing the place or process in full, as to not get sick to your stomach while I worship this lunch and light dinner Mecca. All I wish to tell you is come in and see for yourself firsthand. You will be treated not just as some dude in a line, but an educated consumer making a wise lunch/dinner decision. Quick and quality? You can find it at the sandwich joint with all the cool antiques inside.
The sandwiches are not earth-shattering large, which is perfect. The soups are fresh and well prepared, as are the salads - and their shakes are beyond amazing (as one friend pointed out, a great cure for hangovers).
Other fun notes:
1. Check out their website to get the full story behind the place, it's really neat.
2. The musicians make a great touch, but be careful about the one in Farragut North by 19th and L - he managed to butcher one of my favorite songs of all time. That aside, it's still a great touch that ads to this place's uniquely attractive character.
3. For a great option, order the PBJ with Bananas - it may be an extra 50 cent charge, but one of their employees suggested it to me once and it definitely did not disappoint.
4. When it's not just a guy and his guitar jamming out, their music selection in the place is top notch. I only wish they had a Satellite station I can tune into more often.
My dream is for them to have some sort of frequent customer card, much like California Tortilla, or what Subway used to do.
Call me biased, call me crazy, I don't care. God bless Potbelly, God bless America, and when you finally get the chance to patronize this establishment, God bless you.
Potbelly is definitely my favorite sandwich chain in DC. They're warm and toasty, great with the hot peppers, and cheap. For that, Potbelly's is a solid 4 stars in my book.
What bumps it up a star is the catering. As a law student who does a lot of event planning at school, I highly recommend Potbelly. Earlier this year, we always ordered Subway. After several late deliveries, soggy sandwiches, and the delivery man forgetting things like the condiments or utensils, we decided to change.
Potbelly has been our savior. We have already ordered Potbelly at over 5 events (with 100-200 people at each one), and everyone is always happy.
-The delivery is always on time, if not early. The delivery people have also been very nice.
-Unlike Subway where we had to carry clunky plastic trays of sandwiches ourselves, this Potbelly delivers all the sandwiches, packed neatly in cardboard boxes, with a dolly to the room of the event.
-Sandwiches come warm and individually wrapped so it is easy for people to pick up their food. (no sandwiches falling apart)
-The peppers, mayo, mustard, onions, and pickles come in individual containers so the sandwiches are not soggy and you can customize them.
-Cleanup is a snap.
-Potbelly is cheaper than Subway catering.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Subway. I think their individual sandwiches are good. But Potbelly beats them hands down in catering for a crowd.
I never had Potbelly's before this one moved to my neighborhood, and I'm glad it did. Though the menu is somewhat limited, the sandwiches are very good and they have an awesome selection of beverages.
I marvel at how fast they built this place! One day it was a video store bone yard and seemingly days after it was a beautifully constructed new restaurant. My only complaint is that this location closes at 9 p.m. every night. Please, please, something in this neighborhood has to stay open until at least midnight, just for me.
My second Potbelly review... so here is my last cut and pasted..
Get the sandwich "all the way" and you get all sorts of flavors you don't expect from a chain. Very salty, but also lots of vinegar, pepers, mayo and other stuff that blends well with the meat and cheese.
I used to walk next door to get this, so the convenience factor probably got them an extra star(along with the live music at lunches which makes the long line less boring)
The reason for the second is that I live near this one and used their online ordering/payment for my last order, and was impressed. You can customize 1-n sandwiches online, mark them with different people's names and pay with a credit card, then walk in and grab them at the counter and walk out. I know, Chipotle has a fax service, papa johns has online ordering, but I really like Potbelly's attention to detail in the ordering system.
So Potbelly isn't a new thing in these parts, but THIS location is a new one! When I was living in San Francisco, I was always sure to get some Potbelly's in my pot belly whenever I visited. Deprived Californians don't have these wonderful toasted delights. In fact, when I enter 'San Francisco, CA' into the city search box, you know what comes up as the closest store?
Ft. Worth, TX.
Don't take your local Potbelly for granted. Here's a new one to love.
A solid meh...
I've heard alot of hype about Potbelly in the past and it just didn't quite live up to it!
I had the Italian salad, which had a decent amount of topping and good portion of lettuce... but chickpeas in an Italian salad, what is that? The non-fat vinaigrette didn't have much flavor either, though thankfully there were some interesting flavors on the salad (the red peppers and artichokes were a nice touch). So it was about a 2 star salad, but the extra star comes from the friendly staff and the milkshakes, they were yummy! Though I do wish there was an option for lowfat milk with the milkshake instead of whole milk.
I would come back to try a sandwich, but I'm done with their salads!
There are about 5 places round Van Ness offering sandwiches but Pot Belly is my favourite! I lurve the "Wreck" sandwich because it has everything in it - I leave out the mayo, the oil and onions but ask for everything else. I just love their bread - I suppose this is all relative cos I am thinking of subway (subway tends to make everything feel cardboardy - even their meats). Great shakes - I like the little biscuit they put through your straw. Unlike burger joints, the seating feels homely without that awful greasy smell.
Try it if you havent already. You'd be hooked.
Ok, ok it's a chain, but what a chain it is. The sandwiches are great: lightly toasted with decent amounts of toppings... mmmm. I can taste the roast beef now.
The staff is also friendly and jovial each time I'm in there. Makes for a great atmosphere, and I like that you can call ahead for pick-up.
This is the second Potbelly's that I've been to. The first one I went to was near Farragut North - on my way to DAR for a DCFC concert. I wasn't particularly impressed then nor did my opinion really change after going to this Potbelly.
The sandwiches are alright - but I have to wonder how they have been named "the best sandwiches in DC". I didn't understand what was that good about them. The sandwiches are pretty basic - meat, cheese, condiments, white or wheat...but kinda bland and boring. I would even go as far to say that I like Subway better or even Booeymonger's.
2 stars for sandwiches
The 3rd star for friendly employees.
It's alright...but I'd rather go somewhere else.
I love Potbelly!
Ok if you don't like it try this sandwich and lemme know what you think. It's my boyfriend's concoction, but I love it too : turkey, ham, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, hot peppers (that's my add on). It's soo good. My sister gets : turkey, and all the toppings except no mayo and no tomato...another good one.
Overall I love the toasty bread! Also, the cookies and cream milkshake and the chocolate milkshake are amazing..I'm sure they all are but those are the ones I've tried.
Best sandwich chain around!
As apparently the only person in the world who has yet to review Potbelly, I figured I might as well jump on the bandwagon. And then quickly jump back off. What a disappointment. Everyone always raved about them, and there's one right across the street from where I work. So I figured I was somehow obligated to go ahead and try it. This is what I get for eating things out of obligation. My mother would have been proud (having forced me to be a member of the clean plate club), but that's about it. My taste buds were decidedly under whelmed. Not even under whelmed, really, just...whelmed. I had been expecting a lot more. There was nothing particularly wrong with my sandwich---meat, bread, cheese. Pretty standard. But it didn't excite me. It made me sad.
I learned to order my italian on "wheat skinny," I have a gluten sensitivity. (I was standing in line and learned from an expert in front of me, a really nice lady from Richmond). We don't have sandwiches like this where I'm from, and I am pretty persnickety about (my) food, what you like is your business (nothing more political than food a professor once told me), but I care about my friends. We teach each other: that a bowl of pho needs tripe (ofal) etc. and star anise isn't that exotic c'mon, plus tacos de mexico are made with corn..but I'll get to those reviews(pontificating-lactating-gesticulating-what ever) soon enough..and that's "win" and not "naguyen" ;)
****Right, I like their sandwiches with everything on them. Its a sodium bomb eating here-remember, a good fuji apple afterwards usually balances things-or h20. I am still always perplexed why people eat corn syrup, but I digress(lol). The ice cream needs to be colder/more firm imho. The guy who manages the place seems like a nice guy. He stayed open just a minute longer because my pals and I wanted an ice cream just as they were closing shop.
My boyfriend eats at the Potbelly downtown Philly when he's there on business. I'd never tried the place, until we were leaving DC the other night and needed something quick. He suggested that I try Potbelly. I wasn't sure what to order. He had the Tuna Sub on wheat, but I opted for The Italian sub. The staff were kind, despite the fact that we stopped by 10 minutes before closing. My sub was really delicious. The Italian sub was filled with meats, unlike neighboring sub shops, which bulk up on lettuce and tomatoes. The bread was DELICIOUS and toasted at no special request. As a lover of the toasted sub, I was pleased that toasting was part of the usual business at Potbelly. We had a long road trip ahead of us, so we also bought a cookie to share (I confess I ate the entire cookie). However, the cookie was not particularly good. Sugar cookies should not be doughy or dense, but this one was. It was not good, but hey, when you're bored and driving and trying not to go to sleep-- even a doughy cookie is a good cookie. I'm not a lover of milkshakes, but my boyfriend's Strawberry Banana Shake tasted pretty good. Hopefully NC will be home to one of these tasty little sandwich shops soon enough.
I'm a total Potbelly enthusiast, and as I live near Van Ness depend on this location for weekend Wrecks, Italians, etc. That said, this particular branch has some not insignificant issues. They seem incapable of moving customers through the process at a reasonable speed or with complete accuracy. I've had more orders messed up or sandwiches done in by sloppy topping application than at all the other branches I frequent in the DC area put together. Come on gang, pull it together. You're Potbelly. You can do better!
