Short story: Potato balls. 'Nuff said.

Long story: we walk in around 3PM (not even lunch hour rush!) and the line was huge. I think: maybe we should try elsewhere.. it's probably not worth it. Just hype. Oh wait, we already paid for parking. dammit. Stand in line. Get potato ball + variety of other pastries. Pay for snacks. Eat potato ball. Realize this is the greatest thing man has created and wish I got more than 1. Contemplate whether there is enough money in parking to stand in line for another one. Convince myself that yes it is worth it and doable. Get 2nd potato ball and sigh in contentment.

Oh yeah, then go back another day with coworkers. Company's covering the bill?! Buy many potato balls.

Moral of the story: Yelp (Yelpers) was right.

    http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Yum. I have done all the potato balls and little appetizers, and the guava danishes, etc.  I have never found anything to be so exceptional that the lines are worth waiting in. But someone brought this cake to a dinner party a couple weeks ago and YUM!  Coates with loads of chocolate mousse frosting and these crunchy little chocolate balls around the edges. I even had seconds.

Would I wait in that crazy long line for it? Nope. But if someone wants to bring it to my next party, feel free.

Made a pit stop to Porto's on the way back from the Bay. Ordered a bunch of potato balls, sandwiches and two desserts. The potato balls were delicious. Who knew just rolling those suckers up and frying them could be so good. The sandwiches tasted like your average sandwiches. Not that memorable.

The desserts were delicious. Had a coconut pastry thing and ended up yelling at the empty container in front of me for being so tiny. I wish desserts had a reproductive system.

Porto's...how I wish you had a location in Norcal. Hands down one of the best tres leches cake I've had in a long time...dare I say almost comparable to a tres leche experience in Peru. For a mere $5.50, you can easily order up one of these to go as they're sold in a basic rectangular foil baking pan. Next best thing are their meat-filled fried potato balls...it's like eating a bite of warm & hearty chili wrapped in a soft blanket of whipped potatoes. Another must-try are their cheese rolls. Try the guava cheese rolls if you're looking for a unique twist. Call a day ahead to pre-order fresh, soft-baked amaretto cookies. Having tasted their amaretto's, I realized the overly sweet and crusty store-bought versions sadly fails to represent the real thing.

This establishment makes a fantastic stop over on a road trip any day! I'm ready to find another reason to head down south to load up on more sweets and save room to try one of those Cuban sandwiches.

    Porto's is just amazing.

Stop by for a quick bite and coffee or order a beautiful birthday cake or snacks for a party.

Came here yesterday to get some potato balls, cheese rolls, and cheese/guava rolls for our Superbowl party. Needless to say, they were the first items to disappear when we got home.

I've also ordered cakes here and they looked and tasted great. It is worth every penny.

The only reason this place isn't 5 stars for me is because it is always packed and so you have to wait quite a bit.

Quick tip - go to the cafe drink line and order food there instead of waiting in the long bakery line.

You can rely on the 2400++ reviews already written. Everyone has pretty much said it all and how can you miss those long lines?

In a nutshell, have eaten Porto's baked goods at least 30 times and have never been disapointed with anything!

Other than the famous Potato Ball or Fruit Tart... I would also recommend the following cakes.....
Parisian (Devil's food chocolate cake w/ chocolate whipped cream)
Milk 'n Berrie (Tres Leche) cake

    Seriously, to die for!  :)

    Potato Balls.

That's kind of all I need to say.  The slight crunch, the soft mashed potatoes, the wonderful taste of it all... I am just making myself hungry right now.

cheese rolls are also da bombest

Overall: that's a great meal right there
12 potato balls and 5 cheese rolls. yum.

I don't eat cheese or dairy, but I go CRAZY for the cheese rolls here.

This Mexican-style bakery is always busy and filled with people, but for good reason: delicious, cheap pastries and other specialties along with happy, engaging employees.

The cheese balls are like a cream cheese danish..except it melts in your mouth and has a perfect sugary glaze. You can finish a dozen without even realizing it -__-

I also like the potato balls, which is just ground beef and seasonings wrapped in a mashed potato-like substance and then lightly friend. YUMMMMM.

The only downside is that they don't really have a lot of their items on the menu, and when you see them in the display case, there are no signs. I guess most people know what each item is so it's not a big deal, but when I first came I was a bit confused. The guy packing up our items for us was really nice and threw in extra items here and there ("Two dozen cheese rolls? Here's a few extra. Three meat pies? Here's a fourth") which was really sweet of him.

Every time I'm in the LA area I always make it a point to drive out to Glendale for some Porto's!!! All my friends know I don't eat beef, but the potato balls here are SO GOOD it's one of those rare exceptions that I make, that's how yummy they are! From their potato balls, to the sandwiches, to their coffee drinks, to the cupcakes and fruit tarts for dessert...everything is just as good as the next!

I like to try a new sandwich every time I come, and I'm never disappointed. I've had their cubano sandwich, the medianoche, and the pulled pork ones and they are all delicious in a different way. Also, it comes with plantains (I hate plantains btw, bc they are usually so starchy) but the way they make it into chips and salt it is really good. The prices are cheap too for the quality: a dozen potato balls are about $10, a sandwich meal is $8, and drinks are about $3. Where else can you get gourmet red velvet cupcakes for only $1.50?!

I'm always so happy when I get to come here! I can't wait to come back again.

MMMM!!! Portos has a wide variety of choices on their menu, with over 20 sandwich choices, a breakfast menu and a huge bakery selection I highly recommend this place! I am definitely a fan for their potato balls and I usually order the steak torta sandwich. Since Portos offers such amazingly delectable food be ready to wait in line! The lines are never short, usually around 20 minutes, but you do have the option of calling ahead to make phone orders! So if you don't want to wait and you don't plan on eating at the restaurant, call ahead!

Pro: DELICIOUS FOOD at a good price! great service!
    Cons: Long lines

This place is excellent, I can't believe I never been here till I was 23 =( . But no worries, I spent about $40 my first time and got me close to two boxes of pastries, sandwiches, soup, salad, and coffee and finished every last crumb and drop.

Staff is real nice and friendly, I asked for to-go boxes about 10 times and they never hesitated once to give me one(no, stink face either just a smile =) )

This place is ideal for anything: hangout, date, breakfast, coffee and a break.

Cubano Sandwich w/ Banana Chips - Excellent!
    Cheese Rolls - Excellent!!
    Meat Pie - Excellent!!!
Weird Glazed Coconut Balls - shiznittle bam snip snap sack!(Half Baked - Dave Chappelle)

I'm not a huge fan of baked foods, but Porto's Bakery certainly is an eye opener to how good baked goods really can be.

I had the guava & cheese strudel and the cheese roll.
The cheese roll is very, very cheesy so if you don't really like your sweets, make sure to stay away from this one.
The guava & cheese strudel tastes much better than the cheese roll as it is more flakey and not as cheesy. The extra guava flavor helps balance the cheesiness.

I think if I were to go back, I'd like to try the guava strudel. The strudels here are simply amazing and the guava flavor is unique.

As far as Cuban food goes... this is the best in LA by far... and I think everyone knows that.

My favorite dishes: Pastrami sandwich with a side of soup. Also gotta get the potato balls and a meat pie.

TIP! If there's a line, go to the Coffee & Smoothies cash register. They can take your order there too!

If you want to gain some weight, go next door to their bakery.... OH MY GOD! It's like carb heaven and the clouds are made of sugar.

I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't love portos. Everything is just finger-licking good! I'll especially go here for, besides their popular & name-perserving cheese rolls, is the HORCHATA SMOOTHIE. love love love!

what can i say, this place is worth the wait...

The sandwiches were delicious, the pastries were great (the cheese roll and the guava cheese roll was yummy) and not too sweet, and the Florentine cookies are my favorite (i love almonds) :D the prices are reasonable too which is another plus. I'm looking forward to coming back here again soon! i eventually want to try their cakes too because i didn't get to last time. The attendants were real pros, the one we had didn't need to write anything down (we picked up like 10 different things) and got everything correct I only wished i lived closer to porto's, if they opened one in the san gabriel or orange county areas we'd probably be there all the time... haha :D

In my opinion, this location is a little slower than the Burbank and Downey ones. Still, it's Porto's and that means CHEESE ROLLS!!! Personally I think the potato balls are a little overrated but the cheese rolls, damn those cheese rolls. I wanna construct a girl figure made out of cheese rolls and just recreate the Donner Party with her...

Portos... how can you possibly go wrong. Most of the bread here is delicious, and I only say most because I haven't tried everything yet. The sweet bread here is not too sweet, but good enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. The savory bread is quite nice and can be filling. Also, with the new addition of the cafe to the side, you can wash it all down with great smoothies.

One major problem is that service can get very slow on busy days. Also, parking could be better, but if it's a local visit, it's not that bad. However, location is great; Portos is planted right in the heart of Brand blvd. and also quite close to the Americana.

They believe in it so much, they put it in the sign for the world to see: BAKERY. (n.) A place where products such as bread, cake, and pastries are baked or sold.  And damn, do they do it well. Check it out - you'll like it.

The croissants, my personal faves, make you want to say cwah-sahn like Pepe Le Pew. I always order a dozen to take home and they store well. Don't need extra butter on these babies. Nuke them in a toaster oven for about 3-5 minutes and they're good as fresh. The cheese rolls - flaky, sugary goodness filled with cream cheese. The sandwiches - everything I get pretty much hits it out of the park because of the bread. The plantain chips are simply delish and the cakes are impressive. Strawberry cheesecake is a party starter and their decorated mocha rolls are a conversation piece. Downside - if you don't eat the Napoleons right away they WILL lose the flakiness, so that's not the best for take out and a long drive home. Opt for a shortcake or maybe a pie.

The parking is a pain (as always in L.A.) but there is a metered/pay per hour lot on Lexington. As stated in many reviews, Porto's is always busy. The line will look intimidating, but it moves quickly. The staff is great, almost as good as the bread. Customers bombard them one after the other, but they're always courteous and always get my order correctly.

I've been to multiple locations and I'm happy to report that the two most important things are consistent: Porto's Bakery has great quality products and good customer service.

You know that you're doing something right when two of your most popular items have (tm) next to their names... Did they really trademark that stuff?

Service: the line can be out the door, but the line goes by pretty quickly. When I counted it was 15 minutes from the time we fell in line to the time we paid for our orders.

So far I've tried their trademarked products, the cheese rolls and potato balls. The potato ball, when warmed, is just this savory combination of mashed potatoes and ground beef that melts wonderfully in your mouth. A couple of these can be a meal for me. The cheese rolls are flakey, filled with cream cheese and tastes just as great. Goes well with a coffee for a quick breakfast. Warning: Both are very addicting and are a fast track to easy weight gain!

Con: Parking's such a bitch around here (darn meters), but it is worth taking the effort to finding a spot!

    Porto's

The legend and the myth I've heard so much about! Finally I get to see with my very own two eyes! This location was about a 15 minute drive from my uncle's house. Nothing but madness when I walked in here. It looked like people spent hours waiting in line but, actually was moving at a reasonable pace. This was very impressive from a very popular bakery.

I waited approximately 30-45 minutes in line with my sis and bro in law. We had to pick up some guava cheese rolls, meat pies, and potato balls. Great prices for delicious delights. A trip to So Cal without a visit to Porto's is just plain wrong. Do some due diligence and check this legendary place out!

After having a horrible experience at Dinah's Fried Chicken, I went to Porto's Bakery to see if I could have a better experience. OMG this place is amazing!!! I tried the potato balls and they are seriously one of the best things ever. This place did not disappoint. They have such a variety of things you just can't go wrong. We tried the coffee, inca cola, potato balls, pastries and all were amazing. If you are ever in that area you should definitely check it out...I know I can't wait to go to Porto's again. =)

THIS PLACE IS SOOO AWESOME! Like my brain kind of hurts just thinking about how good this place is.

Trying to park in this area for me was a PITA, but I said a quick "Hail Mary full of grace please find me a parking space," (shoutout to my Catholic people!) she got me a parking spot really quick. LOL.

It is packed up in this place! Like come with a group have someone stalk for a table while someone else is waiting in the long line to get everyone's order. For me this place is like a version of Panera on steroids and BCAA (branched chained amino acids). I ordered the Pan Con Bistec. Which was basically a roll with grilled steak and potato sticks in it. If it wasn't so busy, my sandwich would have been a lot warmer than it was when I got it, but it was still delicious! The steak had a great marinade on it and that interesting crunch of the potato sticks. I love how they serve you fried plantains as chips. When you come here you must get the potato balls. They're crispy on the outside and nice and smooth inside, which that delicious chorizo in the middle. Desserts...how I LOVE YOU! They probably have the best pastries I have ever tasted. You cannot go wrong with any of them. I had the green tea smoothie too. It was so smooth and you didn't really get that weird powdery feel when you drink it. I also got to have a taste of the HORCHATA SMOOTHIE, weird? Yes. Awesome? Definitely.

I hate sandwiches. It's just never been my thing. So when I hear about Porto's and their great Cuban sandwiches from my friend, I'm not that stoked to go there. Still, I didn't want to be difficult, so I went. And I am so glad that I did.
First of all, you have to get the Inca Cola. You just have to. It's different. It's like Coke, but it's a golden color. I know. Amazing, right? Haha. I also love love love their croquettes, which are like deep fried potato balls. Delicious. And I never get tired of their medianoche sandwich. It's sooooooooo good! The meat isn't dry, it's pressed so that the bread is just perfectly toasted, and the portion is perfect. If you want to get the medianoche sandwich with the aforementioned delicious croquette actually included in middle, try the medianoche preparada.
Lastly, do not forget to take home some dessert. Their bakery has an amazing selection of different sugary sweets you can take home. A favorite seems to be the Guava danish, but trust me. Everything is good.
Remember that there are two lines at Porto's. The main bakery line will get you sweets in the beginning and then take your food/drink orders at the end. You get a number. Try to find a table, then they bring the food to you. If you only want drinks, you can go over to the left, and they have another line strictly for that. It moves a little faster. The hardest thing about going to Porto's is the line on the weekend (weekdays aren't bad at all) and between all the yummy selections, you will have an extremely difficult time in choosing what to get!

Come to Porto's for the pastries. Skip the sandwiches. The Guava Cheese Bread is good. The Eclair and Cheese bread were just okay.

And the Potato Balls. Wow. Just... wow. Smooth mashed potato balls with a crispy exterior filled with a delicious beef stew-esque goodness.

And so cheap! Delicious and cheap...!

Potato balls, why you gotta be so good, huh?! Huh?!

I have only heard the best of reviews about their infamous potato balls.. so I had to venture out here on my last trip to socal. I would have to say that I have never had something like this and it was alright. The bf loved it and so did his family, but I absolutely loved their sandwiches! Their sandwiches are a steal.. especially the croissant ones! SOOO HUGE! We had ordered the turkey croissant and pastrami sandwich and both left us feeling full and satisfied.

As for the pastries.. they are super overpriced as I spent over $40 for everything. And super rich and sweet as I am not used to this bakery. Overall, we ordered 2 slices of carrot cake, 1 mango mousse, 3 fruit tarts, 2 lemon poppyseed cakes, 6 potato balls, feta spinach croissant amongst other things. I would have to give this place 3 stars because my ABSOLUTE favorite desert is a good lemon poppyseed cake, especially since I have dreams of it being my wedding cake flavor.. and Porto's lemon poppyseed cake left me the most disappointed. The cake was so rich with butter and barely any lemon sauce on the top.. sighhh. I am still off on my adventure to discover the best lemon poppyseed cake ...

I've come here many times for coffee,  the coffee is superb especially the espresso cubano.  I'm here for the cuban espresso and am addicted to it.

Unfortunately, I have had lackluster sandwiches like the pan con bistec,  the media noche, the cuban sandwich (was dry the 3 times I had it).  The pastries  except for the guava pastry and almond croissant (both deeelish) are not as impressive.  I've tried them all as there is a nice variety to choose from.

The potato balls which seem to be a big hit with some Yelpers have left me underwhelmed. I love Cuban food and  I've been to many Cuban dinners at friends' homes and great Cuban resties in LA.  Typically, potato balls are the size of one's fist loaded with picadillo-- the ground meat filling that when perfectly spiced, is to die for.  The potato balls at Porto's are bite sized, generic,  skimpy on the filling and not as flavorful.   The cakes are ok and good.  I've tried over 10 cakes here (from co-workers'  and friends)  and they seem to taste the same with different flavors blended into the cakes.   At any rate I like this place just not madly into it.

Porto's Bakery, i'm very sad you're so far from me....but you're so worth the drive...

this is the one place where i'll pay for balls in my mouth..
    2 DOZENS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

their potato balls are ridiculously amazing....... fried mashed potatoes hovering ever so gently over some hearty, well seasoned ground beef... GOD you Cubans are good.

their roast beef sandwich is delicious as well..... served with some fried plantains.. mmm! perfect..

cheese rolls are also good, but i like my meat.. so i don't necessary drool over this as much as i do for the potato balls and the roast beef..

my friend though, ordered a salad (poor her) cause she's vegetarian and i dragged her along for my selfish need to get my fix..  and she said she was really disappointed...

i really wanna come back for their chicken croquettes!! i hear they're amazing

mmm Porto's.. you are so loved.

This is the original Portos I have been to.  The quality of the products are the same as what you would get at the Burbank location.

This particular location feel a little smaller since it is technically two buildings.  The original building houses the area where you order cakes and baked goods, but as they got more popular they acquired the facility next door and that houses the cafe.

The parking at this location is horrible.  You either park on brand or in the paid parking lot behind the restaurant.  Both will be normally busy.

Portos has the best cakes ever. No cake I've had has ever come close. The Red Velvet cake is beautiful with fresh rose petals on top. The cake itself is moist, and the frosting is indescribably creamy.

The Parisian cake is tied with the Red Velvet for my favorite. A moist devils food cake with creamy chocolate frosting and coated with tasty chocolate shavings, it's impossible to stop eating this.

For Big Mike's bday my aunt bought us a chocolate grand marnier mousse cake which was amazingly good. It comes with some tiny malted chocolate balls coating the base layer. I spent $42 on a Thomas the Train ice cream cake at Big Mike's request and in the end, all the kids wanted was the Portos cake. Note to self, next time skip the kids design and just get Portos instead.

This place is great... They have everything and everything is so delicious.  Love the variety of pastries.  The only thing is that they are always so crazy busy and long lines....

Decent prices, strong cuban coffee (yummm). The cuban sandwich with a 3$ fresh squeezed orange juice- Best price in town.
Had an unusual situation today...ordered our regular then waited an hour for it to arrive. Asked a manager what happened and he apologized and made it all right and then some. This place has the best customer service. The staff is extremely busy but still friendly and helpful. I live in the South Bay and wish Porto's would open
a site in Torrance by Del Amo Mall or Manhattan Beach. We have nothing like this in the South Bay.

The banana chips that come with the sandwiches are AMAZING!  They aren't sweet, but they are a wonderful savory light tasting surprise!  A friend of mine said they have an oil dip I have to try (it was not given to us when we ate there).  Also, my friend mentioned that you only get those banana chips if you order for "here".  When you get your sandwich to go, NO BANANA CHIPS FOR YOU!

I highly recommend that you look at the menu before getting in line and have a back up selection in case they're out of something (which happened on our visit so I stood there gaping at the menu not knowing what to choose).  I ended up with a basic turkey sandwich which was good but I would really have liked more time to figure out another choice.

All in all I would absolutely go back. Can't wait to try something else!

If I had one dying wish... I'd want everyone to taste porto's tres leches cake.

Well, except for the lactose intolerant folks for whom tres types of leche would likely spell doom...

Step 1. Circumvent the long ass pastry line and go straight to the cake line! Yes, that's right. Do not order their mini tres leches..sorry but it's just not as moist, soaked, and delicious as the full cake (which is only $5 anyway!)

Step 2. Pick out the tres leches cake. It's in an aluminum tray.

Step 3. Don't focus on how plain the cake looks. Yes, yes it's just white...like milk!

Step 4. Pay only $5 for Porto's gift to man.

Step 5. Grab a friend to partake in the devouring of ambrosia

Step 6. Devour cake straight from the tin with spoons.

Step 7. Try to stop eating...I dare you

But seriously, this cake is absolutely saturated with the milky and creamy sauce that they pour over their spongy cake. If you like moist desserts and condensed milk (and cmon we all know how magical it makes thai ice tea and viet drip coffee), you will love this cake! When I worked in Glendale, I would grab one of these nearly once a week to bring home to the appreciative Mr. V :)

The cheese rolls are THE best! My family stopped by here on the way back to Norcal and i told them this place was a must try. They LOVED it. We bought a box of a dozen home for the other relatives to try.. they didnt expect cheese could be so good as a dessert. I am definitely going back here the next time I'm in town.

As for the mango mousse, in my opinion, Cocola Bakery in Santana Row beats it.

PORTO'S. you can't come to glendale and not know what porto's is. honestly. lol. Parking is always terrible, sometimes there's no street parking on Brand no matter what time to you go but there's that parking garage off of orange i believe. Anyway! The food. Amazing pastries really. Flaky, tasty. Easy to overeat. My personal favorite would be their chicken pie, the way the chicken is made...it is just to die for. My parents are head over heels with the cheese rolls and guava rolls. I couldn't really recommend a time, sometimes they're packed; the coffee line, pre order AND take out lines are long and other times, the atmosphere is laid back. If you're going to get something for a party, especially the cakes, i would suggest calling in advance. Other than that, best bakery in my book!
