A really beautiful museum that's the perfect size for a city like Portland.
The permanent collection is pretty spectacular and they've also had some very interesting temporary exhibits.

Definitely worth a visit for tourists and locals alike!

This museum is the perfect size for those that enjoy musuems but get bored pretty quickly.  I went on a Friday afternoon--on Fridays they have free admission from 5-9.  My favorite galleries were the Impressionism and Maine Art galleries.  They have a good selection of French and American impressionists, and Post-Impressionism too.

I really enjoyed their Maine art/Local artist galleries because it helped me get a good feel for the city.  Lovely museum for a city of this size!

Came in 15 minutes before a tour of 19th-century art / neo-classicism was to begin.  So I was down for the free knowledge.  Ted, the docent, was a good speaker and knew his bidness, I learned a bunch and had a great time on the first leg of my trip through.

After the talk, I wandered the upper floors of the museum.  They have a good deal of known and not-so-known artists that will have you drawing parallels and making comparisons, I found it quite interesting.  Mixed media aplenty, a range of styles, and a warm space make this a great place to stop in if you have a couple of hours.

This was a really lovely art museum for a smaller city.  I was really impressed with the museum space and the collection.  There was a great section that featured furniture by Frank Lloyd Wright that I enjoyed.  Sorry I don't have more specifics, but quite a nice museum and well worth the visit!

For a city the size of Portland, this is a fantastic museum.  They have a great collection of local stuff, and really excellent shows on a regular basis.  Everything from French impressionists to Ansel Adams.  Don't miss this museum if you're in Portland.

The PMA is great. Their permanent collection is a must-see for tourists and the exhibits that rotate keep it interesting for the residents. Also, free admission for USM and MECA students makes it a cheap-as-free (and warm) place to go for a little stroll to see what's new.

Keep an eye out for the Biennial, which can be really bizarre/wonderful.

I enjoy this museum for one specific piece..  The Lost Pearl Diver - a sculpture by Benjamin Paul Akers.  Just that piece is worth a visit in my eyes.. they used to have it in the front foyer so you didn't even have to pay to see it but I am pretty sure it's been moved.  Not a bad little museum though - enjoy culture in Maine, check it out!

This place is surprisingly good. Part of that was I didn't expect much and found four floors of quality art, well placed and documented. The cafe is a bit on the ridiculous side, but what museum cafe isn't? The contemporary and modern stuff is amazing. However, there is an old house (can't remember the name right now) attached open for touring, but it really isn't that interesting as they removed all the old furniture. If you want to see an old house in Portland, go see the Victorian Mansion or the Longfellow house.
