7 reviews for Portland Harbor Hotel
We had a nice experience at this hotel. It is in a great location and every staff member we encountered was very nice and eager to please.
Was a bit pricey ($260 + taxes/night for a room with a king bed) Room was very tiny. No closet, so there were some drawers and hanging space for clothes on either side of the tv. There was only a small walking space (no room for 2 people to walk by each other) between the armoire/tv cabinet and the bed.
And it is a dog friendly hotel, which brings them up a notch. The bathroom was very clean and seemed updated maybe since some of these other reviewers. Didn't notice mildew or anything to skeeve me out in the bathroom.
Didn't eat at the restaurant, only had drinks at the bar, which was fine and got the job done...
Rooms okay - service culture is pretty good. Like the responsiveness and the turndown service. Not a bad place to stay in Portland.

Look people we are talking Portland here, not the Ritz in NYC. For the town this hotel is about as good as it gets. Newer than the Portland Regency and the rooms are not as dated. I would give the restaurant and lounge at the Regency the nod over this hotel. Price is just about dollar for dollar with the Regency and the locations both in the Old Port area are just about identical. Basically you can flip a coin for either hotel. Restaurants and nightlife are all within walking distance, park your car and walk to everything.

My husband and I went over Labor Day weekend after winning a gift certificate to this hotel. Four Diamonds? I'd like to know how that rating system works. The lobby seems newly renovated, so that was really nice, and and staff were friendly and helpful, but that's about it. The room wasn't disgusting, but it wasn't what I expect from a 4-Diamond rated hotel. Something was splattered on the bathroom wall, I wiped it off, so clearly the cleaning people just didn't bother and the shower floor had what looked like mildew in the corners.
Additionally, I don't know who they use for their online reservation service, but it's terrible. Don't bother checking off anything additional for your room. We checked off non-feather pillows and a massage request, we had feather pillows and no massage.
And their "award winning" restaurant is a joke, but that's a whole other review.
The person who rated this hotel and the restaurant must have extremely low standards.

Sadly, this place makes one believe there is a "learning curve" in place for 4 star AAA ratings in Maine.
While the beds were comfy, the staff personable, and our stay pleasant, there was nothing over the top that seemed to warrant the AAA rating. Maybe they stayed in one of the suites with a fireplace.
The hotel was mid-renovation during our stay, which wasn't inconvenient, but there was a power outage at 10:30am on Saturday. Apparently it was previously scheduled, but no effort was made to inform guests. I thought that a little weird.
Three stars for now, although I plan on staying there again when they're done with the remodel.
The Hotel is just ok, but not worth recommending or staying at again. A few things that put them in the "never again" categories are these:
* Rude staff
* Would not let us check in till exactly 3pm. I know you can't blame them for this, but it was more their attitude they gave when we asked..that was not needed.
* A "thank you for staying call" that totally ruined my nap. Bad timing maybe but..just give me a note instead.
* No attempt to even consider a late checkout, and I'm only talking 30 mins on an off weekend.
There's more, but I have already wasted enough time..hopefully you won't waste yours.
Ahhh...The Portland Harbor Hotel..were do I begin? Let's start with the how awesome this location is. Right in Old Port and with everything is perfect walking distance, valet parking with really nice valets who are ready to dish out directions, grab a bag and suggest a great place for a quick bite. A bunch of very personable guys! Overall, the hotel is very easy to find with nice in curb appeal and interior decor..it would definitely be classified as a "boutique" hotel.
Now the cons: having worked in the corporate division of large hotel company that holds a Luxury Collection portfolio consisting of St. Regis, The Essex House, etc. I hold hotels that tout their "Four Star Diamond Rating" up to some pretty high standards. My husband has been staying at the hotel weekly since June 2007, so our experiences have been quite mixed. While some staff is quite accomodating to us, we have hit a few snags...like his twice "lost" shirts that were sent out to be cleaned..or the time that he specifically advised that I would be coming with the kids and left a key at the front desk but upon arrival they refused to give me the key. Ever stood in a hotel lobby with a tired 2 year old and a hungry baby? ARGH!!
Oh, and the printed directions to the beach that haven't been updated to include new red lights..spent a good hour lost with the kids in the car trying to find Higgins Beach. DETAILS people..details. You are listing yourselves as "the only four diamond AAA hotel in Portland". In my experience, luxury hotels pay SUPER close attention to detail and guest comfort..they also clean the rooms. In one of the suites, our feet were literally black...seriously. Hotels can be sketchy enough with kids, but this wasn't the Comfort Inn (no offense comfort inn), you expect cleanliness in a pricey joint, no?
The desk staff..with the exception of Michelle, tends to be condescending. I get the impression they aren't much into long term hospitality careers. Just this morning I called to arrange for the town car to pick up my husband and was given a really hard time by the girl who answered the phone..she initially refused, yep..you heard me right...she refused to send the car unless my husband called. (his phone was dead, thus my call). He later called and she apologized to him by saying that after she "hung up the phone, she realized who the guest was." Huh? Is it appropriate to treat ANY guest that way? I wonder how they act to people who aren't using the hotel weekly.
So..if I had my choice, I'd give the Regency Hotel a go . It is just down the street and the same price point. The Portland Harbor Hotel really needs to rethink their guest services. Also, the restaurant is pretty good, but I didn't think it was as extraordinary as the hotel claims.
