10 reviews for Porters Sports of Tahoe City
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
being a bay area bloke and only a wannabe tahoe/truckee local; i used to buy all my snowboarding gear at tri-city in fremont. well, that closed down, and the son of the owner re-opened at least the snowsports section of that nice store in sacramento as sierra snowboard & ski. that store has a loyal following just like tri-city did; but you know what? i think i actually prefer to buy my gear from porter's when i can.
many of these snowsports stores have modernised and have great web stores along with their real life stores. that's great. porter's is like this.
anyway, what i like best about porter's is that it's a snowsports store that sells snowboard gear but also has a skateboarder side to it, just like me. i'm a skateboarder turned snowboarder turned skateboarder. i didn't come to snowboarding from skiing but from skateboarding. anyway, i like how porter's keeps certain brands in stock like santa cruz. i'm a pretty loyal to santa cruz because as a nor*cal guy, i grew up on their stuff. my dad even took me to met the founder richard (dick) novak when i was a kid. now porter's has a skate shop, and i like that. that's why i really miss the old tri-city even though there's sierra snowboard & ski. i like snowboard shops that also sell skateboard stuff.
anyway, whereas i've been to many, many snowboard shops (including tri-city in the old days) where the staff sounded like they barely knew a thing about snowboarding, i like how the staff at porter's is experienced and knowledgeable. they're real locals but (for the most part) aren't snobby about it.
porter's is a real core shop. it's the kind of local shop that you need to support when you hear "support your local board shop." like, they actually promote the snowsports, sponsor athletes, etc. they're people who are in it for the love of the sports, not just to make a buck.
well, i'm reviewing the tahoe city location right now, but they have multiple locations. i've been at least to the tahoe city and truckee locations mulitple times. the service is great at the tahoe city location. once the toe strap on my brand new burton cartels broke at the top of my first lift ride at homewood, so i rode down on one binding and drove up to the tahoe city porter's to get it replaced at a very reasonable price. i was back on the slopes with my friends in no time.
As a skeptical online shopper, I rarely purchase anything over the internet because it's too much of a hassle, but Porters Tahoe and staff have made me a believer! visit http://www.porterstaho...
I ordered a jacket from Porters and it was part of a close-out so the only size Porters had were Large. I received it the following day and I must say... that is what you call SPEEDY DELIVERY!!! The jacket was too big for me though so I called the Porters store to see if they had a smaller size. Of course they had none in stock because of the close-out, but Jennifer and Karen went out of their way to contact their buyer and locate one for me! I would've never gotten that kind of service from any other store.
Over the past few days, I've contacted Porters for many other things and they have always been accommodating and helpful. I'm sure they're tired of hearing from me, but it definitely does not show in their customer service.
Their dedication to serving their customers is rare and valuable and I can't express how thankful I am for everyone's help at Porters.
Thanks again to you and the whole Porters staff for making my online experience a trouble-free and enjoyable one. You will definitely hear from me again, even though I know you're tired of me calling you everyday for help!
I love love love this website and http://www.porterstaho... will definitely be my go-to place for all my snowboarding needs!
i came in here to get a pair of shoes so i could go hiking. i had forgotten my sneakers at home. the sign says women and childrens upstairs but ALL shoes are downstairs. no one helped me. i basically tried on a display. decided i was ok with it. and took it the register. then the girl went to get me the pair.
Great prices on the ski & snowboard demo gear & summer seasonal sales for winter gear. Everything was 50%-75% off the retail price! New wool socks for $10, Ski googles for $40, gor-tex Burton gloves $10 and so much more. July 4th weekend, July 31st & Memorial Day are the sales days (i think, you may want to check online).
Well, not a month after I complimented Porters on their generosity to pay sales tax, they pull it out from under us (us being California shoppers as well as Nevada). Something to do with the recent change in increased taxes but I'm not one hundred on the details. I just know my girlfriend had to pay taxes on the new snowboard she picked out. For the other states, rest easy. You guys can still get the great deals, no taxes to pay, and free shipping on orders over $50. With the current economy as it is, that's a home run right there and a very strong reason to purchase exclusively from this company. Now if only they could let us back into the club....

First off, AWESOME after-season winter sales and even better customer service. I purchased brand… Read more »
Well, not sure what to make of this selection of reviews. But I'll share my experience.
I went to get a rental here because my friend has this Snowbums card or something, and it gives him one free rental at a bunch of locations. The one in Tahoe City happened to be for Porter's. When I went, there was exactly one guy manning the rental counter, and about six customers drifting around looking either anxious and trying to mob the counter, or confused and hanging back until they were told what to do. The guy who was helping us seemed a little stoned, which I guess is par for the course in ski towns. Anyways, the gear I got was basically shit. The snowboard was totally beat up, with notches all along the edges, and the technology was ancient - super stiff, thick, and heavy. The boots' insulation was worn through, so my feet were freezing, and one of the lace locks wouldn't stay put so I kept having to retie them. They also do NOT have helmets for rent which I consider ridiculous, and they forgot (or didn't have, not quite sure which) to attach a leash to my bindings. Not usually a big deal but it was icy that day and my board totally kept slipping away from me. I guess you get what you pay for - normally this would have been a $25 rental.
As far as gear goes, I took a look around afterwards. They did seem to have a big selection, but it wasn't priced particularly competitively. Most things were at or above MSRP. A couple of women's snowboards at $280 (the cheapest price I could find) and a lot more in the $350 - $500 range. Helmets around $80 - $130, bindings were $120+, and boots $100+. They were having a 40% off sale on a lot of the boards, which made it slightly more attractive to me.
They also have an outlet down the road a bit towards the resorts - not sure what the deal with it was because I never managed to stop by while it was open. But it looked like stuff was discounted majorly there - 50% off almost everything and some things 30% off on top of that. Has potential.
Bottom line: don't bother renting from here, and consider shopping while there's a sale going.
i was impressed first by this store's web sight. i bought a few things and was blown away by there customer service. i ordered something and when i got it, the person i bought it for had changed there mind. i called them up and they where HAPPY to do what ever i wanted to make me happy. it is so rare these days to get service like that, and from a shop (that i later visited, its awesome) that knows there product because they use it and love it. so all and all, great selection, great product, the best customer service i have had in a long time, and i always seam to find a great deal on something i want. i freaking love this store.
Great gear in Tahoe City. Great Service, great selection, decent deals on jackets (like 20% off and up)
Good selection of snowboarder AND skier gear.
No better place in TC
Their good selection & friendly fruckin staff are what must keep Porter's filled with out of town regulars and newbs alike. An excellent stop to stock up on gear off season.
I've been gearing up here since childhood trips to Tahoe. As a kid, I remember their selection was always the coolest. A recent stop in proved the same. Great ski/snowboard styles & brands at fair prices.
