Excellent BBQ. This is the real deal for sure. Besides BBQ, they had some good looking fried chicken. It was tempting, but maybe next time. I wasn't all that hungry, so I only tried a few things.
Here's my report on the Q:
Sauce: I only tried the sweet sauce and it's exactly the way I like it. They have medium (bubba sauce) and spicy too.
Pork Ribs: Perfect...in every aspect. Color, texture, flavor.
Pulled pork: Moist and delicious. Served with some larger chucks with a nice crust on the outside.
Sides: I had the beans, they would have been great with out the green bell pepper. That flavor just over powered them.
There was this Japanese business man sitting next to us and I am not sure what he order, but it was the most BBQ I have ever seen on one plate. It must have been some kind of sampler, because it was piled high with meat and topped with a gigantic beef bone. He took that plate out too.
THEY ARE OUT OF BUSINESS
I went here, the signage up is now for a sandwich shop. The sandwich shop is closed as well. The insides are empty.
Ah the chicken, so good, so good. Smoked or fried. Doesn't matter. I am in love with their chicken. Ok, so the fried is probably better.... but what can compete with fried chicken??? Seriously... what competes? NOTHING.
The ribs are insanely good, but I don't usually eat ribs for dental reasons. I always pick off everyone else's though.
The side dishes are heaven, the yams and the greens are my favorite, but the dirty rice is ridiculous too. I'm a fan of the fried bread also. Not much of a mac and cheese girl, but my vegetarian sisters are all about it.
The pulled pork sandwich rocks.
The staff are friendly, the wait is never too long.
My only complaint........... I can never figure out what I want to order!!!
I don't think I was sure what I was going to rate this, but now that I'm here at the computer, it's 5 stars all the way.
Up a star for the drive-through. We pulled in, thrilled about the drive-through, and immediately saw a Bentley parked at the curb--Josh, who's been living in Guatemala, was of course in awe at the dichotomy...The ribs were gorgeous. We got them to-go, but they smelled so unbelievable, like the smoke was still leaking out of the bag into the car...we pulled over and ate on the spot.
We had the Pork ribs. Not baby back, what's the point? The ribs were VERY meaty. Very. Yum. Plus they don't overdo it with the sauce. I usually order my ribs dry, but I forgot this time, and wasn't dissapointed. They had a beautiful pinky smoke-ring-tinge, which I wasn't going to have any doubt about, as they smelled like they'd been hanging out with charred wood for hours, with their to-go menu confirmed (16 hours+)! Porky's is awesome in every way, I finally have another place to get my ribs beside's JR's!
Hooray for Porky's! It's awesome, and super duper convenient with the drive-thru!
I left singing Gershwin... "I loves you Porgy", but substituting in "Porky", which would be a great jingle, by the way...
Porky's BBQ // Golden Bird Chicken
Before I write a review, just to be clear, Porky's BBQ AND Golden Bird Chicken are in same building and share same chicken. I am writing review on both.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon this great southern style BBQ house while I was visiting the 'FORUM'.
I ordered a lunch special Pork Tips (1/2lb) with French Fries and a piece of thigh Fried Chicken. I got Rib Tips because that's what cashier recommended. I ordered one and then my friend noticed a fried chicken menu. So we added a thigh for just 99cents.
I could try both Porky's BBQ and Golden Bird Chicken
(((Porky's BBQ)))
The BBQ souce was amazing. One of the best I have ever tasted in Southern California. If you have extra bucks in your pocket, make sure to get a bottle.
Rib Tips were done right. Chewy and Juicy and again, Amazing BBQ sauce all over it. It came on a HOT griddle with onions and BBQ sauce sizzling over it. Yum Yum..
French Fries were done right too. I wasn't sure if it was double fried. but, it was crispy outside and soft inside. Seasoning was ok.
(((Golden Bird Chicken)))
Best Fried Chicken I ever TRIED EVER!! EVER!!
I was amazed and just... wow.. amazed how amazing it was. ok.. my sentence is not making sense anymore
Anyhow.
Batter was great. It was very gentle yet had that southern style flavor.
Outside was amazingly crispy yet not hard.
I took a piece off it and tasted it. just the outside..
When I took a bite out of it.. . the juice.. THE MEAT JUICE!!! just overflowed.. NOT GREASE OR OIL! only meat juice.. all the flavor, juice, and taste were captured inside the batter.
My friend, who's from Texas agreed that the chicken was just done right in Southern Style.
As I was walking out of the restaurant.. I wondered.. what If i put that BBQ sauce on that Friend Chicken? ..hmm.. must try next time
Value = 9 out of 10 (prices were reasonable)
Service = 9 out of 10 (service was courteous and nice)
Taste = 10 out of 10 (You will love it)
My friends' wedding was catered by these folks. It was so good that my girlfriend and I went to their restaurant the very next day!
The sauce is addictive. The meat is slow cooked and perfect. The portions are huge. I always end up taking food home.
Everyone who works there is really nice. In fact, the last time I went there, the woman behind the counter recognized me from my friends' wedding and asked me how they were doing.
I still have yet to try the chicken but I am sure it is great.
The best thing about this place is how fresh the food is. They only cook what they think they'll use, and if they run out, then you're out of luck. I've been getting food here for a year, but the only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are because some of the employees aren't always the friendliest (when the owner isn't around, that is), and because the flavor of the food isn't consistent. I can't expect it to always taste EXACTLY the same, but sometimes the differences are extremely noticeable.
If you live in the area, I definately recommend trying it at least once. Plus, they serve alcohol and have a bigscreen HDTV.
After dropping someone off at LAX, I decided to try Porky's for dinner since I was in the general vicinity and its probably the only time I even am in that area. I got there around 7:30ish and there were a few dine-in customers leaving and a few people getting takeouts after me. I ordered the 3-meat combo. I chose beef brisket, hot links, pork ribs and my two sides were BBQ beans and collared greens. The meat came out on a sizzling skillet of onions. All the meats were great and there was a ton of food that I had to take home after, but then again you're spending about $25. The beans were okay, but I'd probably skip the collared greens next time. I will also have to try the pulled pork.
We order from this place @ work once every 2 weeks or so, and I thought I should try it, even though Im a vegetarian.
So I got a garden salad with a side of Mac
Salad - Huge, and they dont charge extra for cheese! I give the salad 4 stars, except for the croutons, which taste like they were fried with the bacon. ewwww. Seriously, do you have to fry croutons?
Mac and cheese - Pretty good, but tiny!!!!! I guess for 2 bucks, you cant really complain. Very cheezy, and I dont think its the blue box brand.
All my coworkers look like they enjoy the chicken, so for that alone I will recommend it to those who enjoy fried chicken.
BBQ seems to be something that everyone can associate with. There are various types of BBQ, something to fit everyone's tastes. Porky's has been widely regarded as one of the best BBQ restaurants in Southern California. They specialize in pulled pork and pork ribs, but also serve beef and chicken. Their BBQ is dry rubbed and smoked for up to 20 hours over hickory wood.
The pulled pork sandwich is overflowing with luscious, slowly smoked pork butt that has been dry rubbed. It is topped with coleslaw and just a hint of BBQ sauce. The sauce is a little tangy and not too spicy. The sandwich has to contain at least a half pound of smoky pig. There is just enough fat on it to glisten your lips and give it that extra flavor. The only thing that could be better was if the meat was hot, but they take it right off the smoker and serve it at that temperature, otherwise that juices would evaporate with the added heat.
The yams are very Southern style, loaded with butter and brown sugar. There was just a little too much butter for my taste, and its heavily seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg. It's almost like a mini dessert in a bowl.
They even have Golden Bird Fried Chicken, and chicken and waffles for adventurous types.
Porky's truly is one of the best BBQ places in town.
I've been on a bbq rib tip quest recently and wanted to try Porky's out.
Porky's specializes in bbq but there is fried chicken and hamburgers on the menu. But I was here for the rib tips which I order the lunch portion.
While I was waiting for my food when a Christmas DVD movie played on the widescreen even though it was Jan 3. I found it unusual that the food took a while to get to my table but when it came I realized why. I heard a sizzling and then my entree came out. All neatly laid out on a pizza pan there was a fajita skillet with my rib tips on a bed of onions and green peppers, a small bowl of red beans and rice, Texas toast, and a plastic ramekin of bbq sauce.
At first I'm a bit befuddled because I'm used to picking rib tips with my fingers out of a paper boat with fries and a piece of Wonder bread at the bottom. As the smoke and sizzle settled down I hesistently dug in with my fork wondering if I should be eating this with tortillas instead. Since the sauce was on the side you could taste the dry rub first which was good. The tips were smoked with hickory but not too strongly. And the bbq sauce had a complimentary flavor. The red beans and rice were a bit bland and tasted like they were sitting around a while. It wasn't the best bbq but it was decent enough to say that I could find myself eating here in the future.
The Forum is located a block east of Porky's so it would be a convenient place to grab a bite to eat before a concert.
Went here last night before a concert over at the Forum & boy was it good. I had the pulled pork with dirty rice, onion rings & BBQ beans & my boyfriend had a whole smorgasborg of fried things: fried chicken, fried catfish, fried okra, and french fries. We topped it off with some Diet Coke to watch the figure.
Mmm, mmm! It was happy fried love. I only wish there was a similar joint in my neck of the woods. Service can be pretty slow so don't expect to get in & out fast, especially since the heavy food will have you moving in slow motion afterwards. One thing: If you're not a BIG eater, you can definitely share a plate with another person because they do not skimp on what they give you.
If ever I'm back in the area I'd order the pork ribs. They looked incredible & momentarily made me regret my pulled pork decision. Though I would highly recommend that you try out their fried chicken (you can buy just a leg) because it is, as their slogan says, "full of flava!" If they just made the batter extra spicy their fried chicken would be unstoppable.
hit porky's for lunch
had the pulled pork sammie, comes with a side ( mac n cheese ) and a diet coke - $9.80
the menu said the sammie has 12 ounces of pork - i believe it - damn thing is huuuuge. tender, good flavor - i prefer a little more of a smoky taste - surprised since they smoke using hickory - usually you can really taste/smell the hickory.
i really LOVED the mac n cheese - smooth, rich with a little tang - either they use cream cheese or sour cream - my guess.
i love this place !
the one thing that i miss about working in inglewood was the good food in the neighborhood. like this place.
pulled pork is sooooooo good. won't order it anywhere else but here. and i agree that the service is really good, and the people behind the counter are nice. i've never had to wait forever for food, it comes out pretty quick.
this place isn't here anymore, i drove looking for it and ended up going to baby blues instead...
This place is AWESOME!!! The pork ribs are great and the beef ribs are actually meaty and tasty. Portions are huge and you will have some leftovers! The baked beans with pork pieces are mighty tasty as well.
I'll try it again, but it wasn't all that. Baby backs a bit tough on the bone. Didn't see much of a smoke line in the meat. Beef ribs skimpy on meat but not a bad chew. Cole slaw seemed thin in sauce, which worked out ok after all the other heavy food. Greens I liked a lot, bits of pork in there. Fried chicken very crispy, thick crust. Reminds me of the old Pioneer Chicken. Liked the BBQ sauce a lot. Aloof but friendly service depending who helps you.
This is a solid BBQ spot. I ordered a two meat combo of Brisket & Rib Tips and it came out on a sizzling platter with onions & green peppers. Money presentation and good BBQ. The sides were right one- the beans and dirty rice were the best. The building is a converted Taco Bell which cracks me up but the owners did a good job sprucing it up. Give it a shot if your in the Westside and want some actually BBQ. Best bet is the Baby Back Ribs, Pulled Pork, or Rib Tips. The owner clued me in too that Tuesday is buy one, get one free on entrees. Money deal.
My husband and I just got back from Porky's and I had to write my review right away. It was absolutely delicious. The folks there are super-friendly and the food portions are humongous. I ordered the beef brisket dinner plate which comes with two sides (I got the daily greens--kale and bacon, I believe for tonight--and bbq beans) and I ordered a third side (macaroni & cheese) just to get a sampling of another side. When my order came out it was almost an embarrassingly huge amount of food. I say "almost" because it looked and smelled so delicious, I didn't really care if it looked like I ordered 5 times too much food for one person! The brisket was tender and had a hint of smokiness--more smoky at the edges--and with the Bubba sauce (slightly less sweet and more spicy than their regular sauce) it was wonderful. The sides were all fantastic as well. The greens were peppery and bacony and not sweet (I've had southern style greens that were too sweet for my taste, and these were just perfectly savory), the beans were just the right amount of sweetness with a hint of some herb or spice that I couldn't put my finger on. The mac & cheese was creamy and delicious and homemade as well.
We couldn't finish what we ordered and took the rest home; the bag with our leftovers was so huge you'd never know that we had just eaten a full meal on top of that. I ordered their peach cobbler as well, but haven't eaten it yet, so I'll have to write later about that. They didn't have iced tea tonight which was about the only element missing for me, but the food more than made up for that.
My husband's from Texas and we are always longing for Texas barbecue. Barbecue in LA can never be as smoky as it is in Texas but Porky's was the best we have had here so far, and we have eaten at a fair number of places in LA trying to fulfill our barbecue angst. There are some places that have gotten great reviews which I wound up being very disappointed by--I'm just so thankful we found a great place.
I'm not sure what "authentic" BBQ is supposed to taste like, but I thought Porky's was pretty tasty. The place was on my way to the airport located near the Forum. My friend and I were the only two ppl there on a Friday evening, so don't worry about waiting long! Their entrees come with two sides and toasty bread. We ordered the full rack of baby back ribs w/ collared greens (looked unappetizingly soupy but tasted much better than it looked) and mac n cheese (average) and the tri-tip w/ potato salad (on the sweeter side) and boiled cabbage (had a nice smoky flavor and bits of bacon). I felt the ribs weren't anything special (slightly tough in my opinion), but the tri-tip was quite tender. There was definitely enough food for two w/ leftovers. Both came on blackened skillet plates w/ fried onions. Servers were really nice, too, and our food was served quickly. If you go, don't forget to get a $25 gift certificate on http://Restaurant.com! I think the bill came to about $25 afterwards (including tax and 18% tip, even though you order your meal and pay up at the front).
relatively new joint serving a great variety of bbq... come early, once the food runs out, you'l have to wait another day... can't beat the friendly service... eat up!
