Trust me, I wanted to love this place more. I love greasy spoons and the like, but this was in between that spot where it wasn't greasy enough and not greasy. But although you can argue over the quality of the food, Pork Store Cafe has a prime location for a quick jaunt before cruisin' through the stores nearby.
The service is friendly, quick, and the prices are decent. I ordered a drink and a special and it came out to a little more than $10. The food does fill you up and that'll help you can go longer around the area. Just find some fiber along the way.
The line outside dissipates pretty quickly so don't let that intimidate.
The Spinach Feta (I added sun dried tomatoes) Omelet was a bit watery due to the spinach. Beyond that, great meal, waitress is busy but she gets you what you need when she can.
Lets compartmentalize the situation.
Egg = Good
Spinach = Good
SDT = Good
Feta =? don't recall there being any
Hash browns are always to die, perfectly crunchy and not crunchy where it counts
San Francisco let me down on this one. Why do people love this place so much? I mean, I love diners and greasy spoons....but the food has to deliver. Here, it doesn't. I got the eggs in a tasty nest and the garlic was so overpowering, it ruined the whole dish. (I love garlic, but this was borderline raw - and way too strong as a result). My husband's pancakes were just ok, nothing to write home about. Sadly, the cost of our meal was about the same as we would pay at other breakfast joints that are 100% better in terms of quality.
One redeeming factor - great service on an early Saturday morning. This alone won't make me go back, though.
There's little that I can add to the hundreds of reviews of this awesome place, but here are my several cents:
- The hash browns are friggin' delish, probably best I've ever had.
- The service is always extremely fast - almost rushed - but courteous and with a smile. No small-talk, but that's understandable given the traffic that they usually have.
- I've never waited in line for more than 5-10 minutes.
- (All you can drink) coffee is only so-so! If it's not crucial for you to have coffee with breakfast, then wait it out and head to Coffee to the People next door.
- I have yet to finish my plate when I eat there.
- The cooks make quite an entertaining pair. Very efficient!
Perfect greasy food, awesome for hangovers :)
My friend and I went to the Pork Store Cafe for breakfast today based on the Yelp reviews. Though some people on Yelp love it and some do not, we figured that we would give it a shot. The service was fine and it's a fun little place but the food was barely mediocre (if I'm being generous).
My buddy had pancakes (which he barely ate half of) and said that you can get better pancakes at IHOP. I tried the Eggs in a Tasty Basket and it was pretty awful. Soggy hash browns and the biscuits were like cardboard. I like garlic but they dumped so much garlic powder on the whole mess that it was pretty bad.
Don't make the mistake I made - find somewhere else for breakfast. I would eat in a McDonalds drive thru (shudder) before I would eat again at the pork store cafe. Off to buy some Tums...
Some of the best breakfast I've had in the city in a whilllleeee. After a long night of drinking and yelling and making fun of bad movies, we stumbled down haight and into line to get breakfast. It's a small place, but has great eggs benedict, which is crucial...
Great place to eat after a late Friday or Saturday night. The line is not bad at all, the longest I've ever had to wait was around 15 min. It's worth it though.
Huge portions that are filling enough to last you until dinner time. Food comes out fast and is always delicious.
I usually stick with the Egg's in a Tasty Nest, but the Pesto Scramble is awesome, so are the Pork Chops. Biscuits and Gravy are always great for the ambitious and southern feel. Overal it's a great place.
If you're eating at a diner alone, please don't complain about having to sit at the counter.
That said, I like sitting at the counter every so often, even if I do have company with me. Ben and I decided to grab some local lunch after his flight. He suggested Pork Store-- I had never been there before, and the lines that gather outside the place on weekends was usually the reason. Luckily for us at 3 in the afternoon on a Saturday, the diner was close to closing and the clientele was dwindling, though still present. We were seated immediately at the counter and presented with menus.
I got a tuna sandwich, nothing fancy there but I was starving and that was my craving, also pancakes. Craving pancakes like crazy, we ordered a stack of mixed fruit cakes, which would include bananas, strawberries and blueberries. Ben got a ham and cheese sandwich. We both ordered coffee and had plentiful refills during our visit. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious, but I was so disappointed that they didn't cook the fruit inside the cakes, it was just placed on top. The banana wasn't even sliced up. They should have specified that on the menu (like they do at All You Knead) because I surely would have made a special request to have the fruit cooked in.
Besides the fruit faux pas, we enjoyed our meal and left feeling very full and caffeinated.
What a disappointment! I was last here maybe 5 or 6 years ago for weekend brunch, and my memory of it from then was that it was along the lines of one of the 4 or 5 star reviews.
I was shopping in the Haight today and decided to stop by for lunch. I got a seat at the counter right away and ordered the chicken fried steak, which comes with hash browns, eggs, and biscuits, from the pleasant and efficient waitress.
The eggs were fine, the biscuits were pretty good (but cold). The hash browns were terrible...soggy and greasy, not crispy at all; I couldn't finish them. The chick fried steak itself was fine (although a bit salty), but almost no gravy; not even enough to cover it. So I asked for some more.
3 stars up til time the check came. But they charged me $2.40 for the gravy for the chicken friend steak!!!! Come on, the whole point of this dish is that it's smothered in gravy. If they don't put enough in the first place, that's not my fault.
i don't know what the problem was today; they were pretty busy, so it's not as if stuff was sitting around. Maybe they're saving the A team for the weekend...
Um yeah, no. There was nothing special about this place to compensate for the ridiculous prices. The menu was boring the the quality of the food didn't make up for it either. I'd rather pay 3 dollas for a Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl. I ordered banana pecan pancakes for about 9 big ones and what i got was 2 regular pancakes with banana slices and raw walnuts on top. AT LEAST COOK THE INGREDIENTS IN THERE!!! Geez, what revolutionary culinary masterpieces will these people think of next? I honestly don't think the world can handle the glory that the pork store has to offer. Yeah the service was fast but I'd rather wait for good food.
Very good breakfast food
Eggs Benedict and omelettes are to die for
Place is a bit better than mels and ihop and less better than hobbees.. Atmosphere is a bit grungy here and prices are just ok (not as cheap as I thought)
And the wait on the wknds is terrible
I would love Pork Store even if hadn't been my safety (grease) blanket the first year I moved here from the East Coast, welcoming me whenever I needed some TLC via comfort potato carbs (what can I say, I'm Irish), hot coffee, and the cheapest meal you'll find that keeps you full literally all day.
To optimize your oinks:
*The line outside looks much scarier than the wait actually is - I've not seen a group wait more than 20 minutes even on a busy weekend.
*Everyone whining about the service, please. These ladies work hard for the money. They're necessarily tough/bad ass (you try getting to work on Haight at 5 am everyday and see how your soul feels about the world - trust me, I used to bust my ass to N Judah this time of day and it's not pretty) and once you break through the tough exterior, they're all total sweethearts and will hook you up with the window seat, aka the best seat in San Francisco, no questions.
*Although I'm an avid carnivore, the Veggie Gravy is DELICIOUS avocado-y goodness.
*Coffee is the only thing mediocre - I highly recommend the iced tea instead (and then sneak across the street to Blue Front for some of the best coffee in the city... but don't tell them I told you, k? Thanks friend.).
I've been trying to talk my boyfriend into visiting the Pork Store for about 6 months. We finally went last Sunday and I was not disappointed. We seem to have gotten there just before the late brunch crowd and only had a 5-10 min wait for a table. The waitress asked if we would mind sitting with another couple further back in line which was fine with us and they were a pleasant couple who were happy to be seated early.
The food arrived at the table quickly and was hot and delicious. The biscuits were amazingly yummy and crumbled at a touch. I ordered the eggs and piquin sausage. It's rare that an American restaurant publicizes a dish as spicy and it actually turns out to be spicy, I was pleasantly surprised and damn that sausage was good.
If you're a fan of greasy, diner food, this is the place for you! Things you should know before continuing-I can only give a review of their breakfast, and I'm vegetarian.
I'm completely hooked on the eggs florentine-have been for three years. I've tried to go to other establishments for breakfast at 2 or 3pm and haven't yet found one comparable to Pork Store on Haight. By the way, breakfasts come with (amazing) hash browns. I've been to the Mission Pork Store once and did not not care for it as much. Good food, but I don't care for hookahs.
A couple tips for first-timers:
*make sure your full party is present before taking your seat, especially on the weekends! They're tiny and usually have a line out the door, so don't be rude.
*the coffee is inconsistent. If you need good coffee, hit Coffee To The People on masonic and bring in your own. (I have never had a problem bringing in my own)
*be normal and considerate and you'll be treated the same. If you're rude, expect to receive some attitude. You probably deserve it.
Food is OK here, you can find the same anywhere else in the city. Just because it's called Pork Store doesn't mean it specializes in pork. We got in line and there were like 3 groups of people in front of us. When it finally came to our turn (2 of us) the lady seating people skipped us an sat a party of 7 who just got there 5 mins before. Needless to say I a little pissed since we were waiting 20 mins already and ended up waiting another 10. The lady seating folks was going bump the party of 4 behind us to an open table until I told her how long were we waiting. What a load of crap. Better places to go and eat breakfast in the city.
After waking up rather late this morning (following a wild night of t.v. watching and internet surfing, how cool am I?), my husband and I decided to head out into the great wide world of San Francisco for some brunch. We were feeling lazy and didn't want to go too far, so hopped on the bus and headed up to Haight Ashbury.
The Pork Store Cafe had a bit of a queue going on out the door which initially put me off (I was starving, and was in no mood for waiting), but we were promptly whisked inside and seated immediately! This place was super packed at noon, I don't know if that is the norm or it was because today was the Haight Ashbury Street Fair or what.
We sat and the cramped table (tons of condiments displayed across the table, leaving little space for anything else), in the cramped space (almost touching the table and counter seating around us) and ordered delicious breakfasts, which were brought out within maybe 2 minutes!
Our waitress was nice and efficient, despite the fact that many servers could get overwhelmed in such a super packed space. The food was pretty decent, although I thought a little overpriced. The portions are pretty big, though, so I guess that is why they are sort of expensive, considering this place is a greasy spoon type of joint.
I loved the atmosphere, aesthetic, and food at this place. great service too.
I was very skeptical the first time I came here and now I have breakfast here just about every weekend.
This place looks a little suspicious, especially in the Haight. The place is the definition of "greasy spoon." There is always a line on weekends to pack into the small counter-style restaurant. You see everything cooked before your eyes by two of the fastest omelet flippers in town. These guys work hard and they get it right every time (and if they don't the wait staff will do anything to correct it)
The wait staff are lovely girls who work hard. They always have a quick chat with you but there are there to get the job done and to turn those few tables over. I have never felt rushed out but the atmosphere is fast paced. It gets loud but I have never had trouble hearing the rest of my party.
The food is very tasty and comes in large portions. The price is completely fair and I always leave a pretty good tip for the wait staff. I only wish they had mimosas and bloody marys at this location-but hey, you can't have it all.
The only cons are the often obnoxious customers who are 20-somethings (I'm a 20-something so I feel that I can comment on their obnoxiousness) who wear oversized sun-glasses, fresh make-up and leggings and complain about how hung over they are (Go back to freaking bed if you're that hung over. Oh- and usually you don't feel up to putting on fresh make up when you are as hung over as you claim you are...)
Prepare to wait about 10 minutes to get in and do NOT come with a large party (you will wait much longer). While you wait grab a coffee at the cafe next door (they are delicious!) and the cafe is owned by the owner of the Pork Store. I have waited in all kinds of weather and it is nice to have a coffee in hand. On really cold days the Pork Store staff brings coffee to you while you are in line. A very nice touch.
Amazing breakfast and a fantastic local restaurant!
This place is authentic... you can tell by the grease coated surfaces of E-V-E-R-Y thing in the restaurant. The food is delicious and they make it to order (extra crispy, extra runny, whatever you desire). The service is fast but gruff.
This is the top of the hash-brown heap of greasy spoon breakfast places.
Unfancy, cramped, and zero atmosphere. It burned from accumulated grease a few years ago, and I fully expect that regular cleansing fires are needed to renew the local ecology.
Still, the real hash browns, egg dishes, endless coffee, and quick, friendly service are unmatched in The City. Completely satisfying breakfast food.
I ate here a few months ago and I am still thinking about the biscuits. Light, fluffy, crumbly, monstrous! I think I may be drooling just htinking about them. I believe I had a really tasty tofu scramble, a good amount of garlic and spinach were mixed together to make a very nice mix. They have a good mix of veggie friendly food and of course meat products. I am not so sure what they have for the vegans though.
The place is a little small, so smaller groups of 4 will be ok, but any larger and you may have a problem.
The interior is nothing fancy, but cozy and old. You go here for the food and not the decor.
I would definitely recommend this place to people who need some breakfast goodies when they are in the area.
Nice neighborhood joint. Casual and comfy, but stuffy. Wait staff were nice and friendly...in the beginning.
The "Chicken Fried Steak Special" posted on a hanging banner caught our eye, so we decided to order that. We opted for the home fries instead of grits and biscuit instead of toast. Bad choice. The hash browns were soaked in grease and half of it was burnt. We sat at the counter seats so we were able to watch the chef in action and noticed he poured TWO large ladles of grease into each portion of hash browns. That's disgusting! The biscuit were so dry and stale that it crumbled into bits and pieces as we cut into it. The fried steak was chewy, rubbery and had no crunch to it. Their brown gravy was ok, although we prefer white gravy, but it wasn't bad. The only food on the plate that was worth eating are the eggs, and the rest were left untouched after the first bite. How can they call this their "special"? Specially sickening, I would call it.

The Denver Omelette was VERY good. It was packed with peppers and ham and it was humungous. BF and I split the omelette since the Chicken Fried Steak were inedible, and the size of the omelette was plentiful and more than enough to share. The hash browns were also left untouched on this plate because it was also partially burnt and greasy.

It was a quick breakfast since we didn't eat most of it. We got our bill and noticed we were charged an extra coffee. We confronted our waitress and she totally snapped. We were not trying to say anything other than...we did not order TWO coffee. It's not a big deal, it's just another two bucks or whatever, but she flipped and threw a menu onto the counter right next to me and said just deduct it out from the total bill with the bitchiest attitude ever. How does one start out to be a sweetheart and turn into a mean and rude bitch in a matter of half an hour? Why...we all blame it on PMS, of course. We will NEVER come back.

Wow. A breakfest place with a bar? I love it!! Ended up comming after a night of drinking. The egg in a nest was really good. Eggs on top of hash browns and a bunch of other things I know that will make m heart skip a beat. The food was great and the price isn't too bad.
Very homely place with really nice waiters.
If you're willing to wait on line... and shell out some bucks...
EGGS IN A TASTY NEST!!!!!!!
On days like these, when I'm mildly hungover, I wake up and mutter "eggs in a tasty nest". Even when I'm not in the city! Eggs in a tasty nest is the best start to cure a hangover. Hash browns, grease, eggs over easy, bacon, and other assorted things. It's amazing. If for no other reason, go for eggs in a tasty nest alone.
Truly a stop to pork out in.
The name is diceiving.
Much more than pork
Omlettes
tuna sanwiches
bbq sandwiches
feta
salads
Everything fast and hot.
nice atmosphere.
Parking totally sucks.
Can pick up some good stuf a few blocks away in ggpark.
Came here while shopping around the Haight neighborhood. We found this on Yelp and thought it must be good if it had tons of reviews. I ordered their BBQ pork sandwich. It was good, but I don't think it was that good.
The place is small and cramped. I don't have much to say about it.
sunday mornings and pork store go together like beans and cornbread. Its a perfect match.
1. it has an open kitchen. this is great for me, as it means that there's no faking it. You can't fake the good stuff
2. the food is served fast and hot... this is probably due to the open kitchen style...
3. the griddle is extra hot - this is all important for those flapjacks, french toast, sausage, bacon and hash brown lovers. it's essential for that crispy crust (carmelization) on the outside, and warm flavorful insides.
4. it's got ample bar seating, so you can wait for a table... like the tourists do - or just belly up, and dig in.
- it normally gets a lineup after 10:30 am - when the hangover kicks in, so expect to wait... like 15-20 minutes for a table or bar seat.
but its worth it. totally worth it.
If I'm having breakfast anywhere, my eyes immediately scan for eggs benedict so that was my choice for breakfast at the Pork Store.
It was the best hollandaise sauce I've ever had. Everything else about the dish, the muffin and ham, was alright, but I wanted to order an extra porkchop and slather that hollandaise sauce all over it.
This place gets packed as hell. I think the wait for our party of four was around 20 minutes, which wasn't so bad, but if you're going around that prime weekend brunch time between 10-1, expect to see a long-ass line outside. I think it only seats less than 20-30 people in there.
Come to enjoy good food on your binge day, don't come if you are health conscious, have a heart condition, or just afraid of becoming a fatty in general.
Pork Store Cafe has nothing nothing to hide. The kitchen is open for all to see so you can watch them doust your omelette in oil, see the grease drip off the towel they wrap around the new batch of bacon, and gawk at the gallon size tub of butter they have next to the toaster.
BUT...if you want good prices, real hash browns, large portions, and the quickest bruch service I've witnessed, then maybe you can forget the little thing called "health" and feast at Pork Store.
Last time I went, I ordered the corned beef hash ($7.25) and home-made lemonade...delicious.
If you want ceviche and poached eggs- take your tail somewhere else. If you want greasy spoon breakfast you can eat in your clothes from the night before- this is the place.
I clicked in here Saturday morning after one-heck of a Friday night. I worried my 5" heels, halter top, and skinny jeans might create a morning-after spectacle in the cute breakfast joint. Fortunately the neighborhood is littered with dirty hippies that are much more fun to look at. (Great people watching- 1 star).
We were quickly seated (even though the place was packed. My coffee cup was full within 1 minute of being seated and the waitress was non-judgemental and pleasant- but not irritatingly cheerful (add a star).
I followed the recommendation of my morning-after companion and had the Scralifornia. Awesome if you love scrambled eggs with salsa and feta (which I do). The hash browns were delectable too (the kind that are crisp on the outside and soft but not mushy on the inside).
My sour dough toast was a little disappointing- definitely go for the biscuits instead. Next time I will try some bacon (a place called Pork Store Cafe MUST have good bacon right??)... (Great food adds another 2 stars).
What was it that put me over the top and categorized this as a 5 star greasy spoon joint? Coffee was fresh, always full, check was quick and accurate, table was clean, cream was cold... clearly this place has been doing breakfast- and doing it proper- for years. - boom- 5 stars.
I will be back again and again.. in varying hungover outfits to work my way through the menu.
If you're up for tasty Bloody Marys- hit their location in the Mission (it has a full bar).
I really love the food. It's the little things; real butter on the table, real butter on your (tasty) pancakes. Hash browns crispy the way I like them. Cute courteous waitresses. The varied menu offers some unusual items, all good.
Although there is usually a line (always on weekends), the food comes quickly after you order it.
The prices are fair for the area.
One thing I don't like is that if you go alone you have to sit at the counter. There is one table for two that they will allow you to sit at only when business is slow. No booths. Wooden chairs. The bathroom is upstairs.
I just realized why my hashbrowns were plain.
I never put salt on them.
But oh the biscuits were to die for and I was so happy.
My dead brain still knew there was deliciousness in my mouth.
Partying the night before causes a silent breakfast.
So I could bask in the grease of the delicious bacon.
Oh bacon.
I got the Scalifornia.Eggs with Avocado, feta cheese, and SALSA! it was to DIE FOR! loved it. The hash browns are awesome too! and I love how they have vegetarian options!! They cook the food really fast too! OH and i love the MA and POP feel of the restaurant.
I absolutely fell in love with this place because of their corned beef hash. I tried the twenty/thirty-something dollar corned beef hash at Bouchon, and I've tried the corned beef hash at Hash House a Go Go, which is well know for their beef hash. I admit it, I LOVE corned beef hash for brunch!
Pork Store Cafe tops the list, however! The dish wasn't overly blood pressure bursting salty, and it wasn't uber greasy. It was just right! I ordered a side of grits which was also great.
Sadly, I subtracted a star because of the service. They were swamped that morning, and having glanced over a couple of the other reviews, they're almost always crazy crowded. The wait was over 30 mins outside--in the wind with shady folk offering to sell me weed...Upon being seated at the counter, we noticed the waitress was overwhelmed. She threw down the menu and picked up the coffee carafe in a hurry....I suspect that service was bad due to the busy weekend--probably more attentive on a weekday.
Not that it needs another good review, but damn is this place good. Went there 8/29 with a group of 5 and we couldn't have been happier. Kudos to you and your yumminess.
After a rough 2 days of being sick in bed and eating nothing but chicken noodle soup, I was ready for a big breakfast! I've passed this place on Haight on several occasions, and theres always a long line out the door. So I woke up the boyfriend nice and early and headed to the Pork Store Cafe to find out what the hype's about.
I guess Sunday morning is a good time to go, because there wasn't much of a line that day. I realize now, that due to the cramped space, there really isn't room for a line inside. We were seated in a few minutes at the counter, and the nice waitress quickly set down the menus and got our drink orders. I must say, I find the speedy service, and super speedy cooks behind the counter very impressive! I've never seen service move that fast.
Boyfriend ordered the Piggy Special with French Toast, and I got the Eggs in a Tasty Nest. The French Toast was made with thick slices, and served with plenty of syrup and butter--Yum. I thought the veggies in the Tasty Nest were a bit much, but it was pretty tasty though, and the biscuits they came with were to die for! I think the star of the meal were the side of hashbrowns we got--which were done to perfection!
Definitely won't be my last visit here. Pork Store Cafe and I hit it off real well.
So many good brunch options to choose from it's hard for me to decide on what to get. I love sitting at the bar here and watching the cooks at work.
Free coffee refills? Good.
Crispy hash browns? Even better.
TONS of bacon AND garlic? Priceless!!
Came here on a day trip to San Francisco. Parking really sucked in this area but me and my friend were determined to eat breakfast here (around 3PM =P). Our attempts would not go without reward!
We got here in the afternoon so there was no wait but there's only about five tables and a counter area that seats about 10 people in there. But there was just enough space for us. =)
We both had to go for one of their signature specials. I mean, if it's on the special menu then it has to be good!
"Eggs In A Tasty Nest": The dish had crispy hash browns topped with sauteed tomatoes, green bell peppers, onions, LOTS of garlic (LOVE it! I use a whole bulb of garlic when I cook =D), LOTS of bacon and chedder cheese which was then topped with two eggs over medium. It came with a choice of either homemade biscuits or toast. I tried the biscuits. The biscuits were a little dry, but at least they were fluffy. Definitely a homemade recipe. But the main dish was very tasty. I LOVED that there was TONS of bacon! Actually, there was a ton of EVERYTHING. There were actually too many tomatoes and bell peppers that I had to push them to the side.
I was definitely filled up when I left the restaurant. I paid about $14 including tax and tip for my meal. Not too shabby.
I suggest you come eat here first and then hang out on Haight to walk off your meal. =)
Eggs in a tasty nest!
The only bad thing is that you can't alter the ingrediants since all food is prepared as is.
The food tastes great, they offer a wide variety of all breakfast staples. I fell in love with about 5 things on the menu.
