This is just about the best mexican food in town:
Fantastic, fresh food;
Reasonably priced;
Yummy tortillas made onsite;
Friendly staff;
Fairly quick despite the hordes of people waiting.
Parking lot is a disaster though.
When I visit my mom in studio city, sometimes we'll come here to eat some tacos.
I wish I had one closer by-- this place is like a luxury rubios or baja fresh. I love this place a lot.
Only thing kind of painful is the parking.... right at the crest of the hollyhood hills near the end of Ventura means things are crammed.
Ok... Totally agree with the other yelpers. When Poquito Mas is around its just plain wrong to go to some other place for Mexican food. This place is amazing. I have to admit it took me a long time to be able to check it out but god am I making up the time I missed! Their classic tacos are soooo GREAT, try it with their homemade Horchata.
The place itself is small and definitely crowded but it's better than other locations. Parking is a nightmare, so I suggest the side street.
I had this like last year and a day doesn't go by that I don't think of the chicken burrito that I had. Poquito Mas, I'll be returning to you soon. Just wait.
This particular Poquito Mas is the best. Been going here for 15-20 years. One of my favorite motorcycle ride destinations, partly because the parking sucks. The Sherman Oaks PM is closer to my house and it's nice but I always seem to get mega extra onions on everything I order there! Easy! I just drive a little farther to the Studio City, Cahuenga one.
Yuck! My husband and I got vegetarian tacos and tostadas. Everything was huge and soggy. It was also sloppy and hard to eat. There was no flavor in both mine and my husband's meal. Needless to say we will not be returning.
Hands down the better location of the other locations that i have been to. The portions or amount of each ingredient seemed to be in proportion and everything was great!! It might have been that one specific day but I dont care. This place STUDIO CITY location gets a 5 start rating!! You guys keep on making those carnita tacos!!
This is one of my favorite places in the whole world! The tostadas are my regular order. I live in orange county now and really miss this a regular place for me. You can't really go wrong here the salsa is awesome the burritos are great. The ahi tacos are a highlight, but I always end up with the tostada! Oh and the HORCHATA is a must!
I have no clue why anyone would go to La Salsa, Baja Fresh, Sharky's, or any other Mexican chain if they lived in the same city as a Poquito Mas. There are few things in this world that taste better than their carnitas tacos. Their tostadas and burritos are incredible too! The only downside is how crowded this particular location can get - but check out the one in Burbank because it's a little bigger.
Also - to the fat dude who glared at me for trying to get into the salsa bar, I think a five minute limit is enough for you to access your salsa needs. Move over!!
Hmmm..........a little bit more ?
Ok how about a little bit more flavor? spice? excitement for this place?
I have been here twice now and I'm not sure what all the excitement is about. I love Mexican food and you can definitely get better than this in the Valley.
On my first visit I had the shrimp burrito. Eh-pricey and not super flavorful. Kinda boring, basically rice and shrimp. The grilled shrimp salad at La Salsa beats this burrito hands down.
But since there is so much love for this place, I tried again. I was really looking forward to the steak burrito mujado style. Unfortunately,I really was not that impressed. :(
I do appreciate that the ingredients are definitely fresh but they are just not that flavorful. I have to say, that although they DO have a salsa bar, the basic salsa is horrible, bland, boring.Combine that with the fact that they screwed up my order with the med. pricing and you have an average experience.
What am I missing here? I'll be taking a little bit more of my money elsewhere next time.
I would take a plane (from Seattle!) to Studio City JUST to go eat at the Poquito Mas across the street from Universal Studios. It is so good, I don't know what to write here...
The BEST is their chicken Burrito - NO RICE, NO BEANS, this is true baja style Guac+Jack+Chicken only. Their GRILL is awesome perhaps it is the secret (?) behind the amazing taste of the chicken. Ah and they put the burritos on the grill AFTER they are done (and for a few minutes) ... it melts the cheese inside and "seals the deal". When I try asking folks around here (WA) to do this, they look at me like I am crazy (Qdobo, Baja Fresh, etc..). I tell them to check out Poquito Mas in Studio City if they don't believe me :)
This is a simple place, mexican music, calls your number on the speaker (I remember waiting impatiently for the call! :) ). Definitely a highlight of my few years living in Studio City CA... I remember seeing Matthew Lillard (Scream) and The Rock (!) there. We talked to The Rock he was super nice. Anyway... This place rocks with or without the stars ;)
Tastes light (not greasy at all), fresh, friendly service. We used to go 3 times per week - at least - when we lived in CA. In an area where mexican restaurants are like bakeries in France (all over the place) this was our #1 choice.
I've been going to Poquito Mas for years now, and actually know one of the owners, Kevin, quite well. I've visited this location, the one in Burbank and the new one in Sherman Oaks. I can say this chain has some of the best mexican food around.
I highly recommend the Bean and Cheese Burrito. I add chicken, and make it Mojado style, with the red sauce and cheese on top, under the broiler for a few minutes. Park some fresh, hot chips next to that with a variety of salsa's, and you're good to go. I highly recommend their guacamole too. It's excellently prepared.
Other favorites include the fish tacos, and the quesadilla. I like my quesadilla a little well done, and they seem to do it right everytime.
There's not much seating inside; at the store on Cahuenga, they have a nice outdoor seating area, but I typically take my food back home to munch on it.
The price is right and the food is great. Highly recommend!
Only downside at this particular location - actually all of them, now that I think about it, is the parking. It sucks out loud!
Was visiting from Chicago with a friend and we were hungry for a late night bite. So we came here, based on Yelp reviews (thanks everyone!) and loved it. We showed up on a rainy day and were happy to see a sign that stated free tortilla soup on rainy days.
I had a very delicious ahi burrito and my friend had a combination plate. The food was very fresh and flavorful. The free tortilla soup was good, too. The best part of dining in was trying all the salsas they offer. I LOVED the green/verde one.
Really nice service, too. And great prices for the quality of food and portions.
The lot was full, but we found street parking up Regal Pl - read the signs so you don't get a ticket!
I have to say, this is better than any Chipotle/Baja Fresh/Qdoba I've been to. Please open up a location in Chicago! =)
i dragged the bf today after our chiro appt (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)...
i ordered the ahi burrito.
HOLY JESUS MOTHER MARY!
the first bite of ahi explosion, avocado, rice, and red sauce brought tears to my eyes.
I LOVE YOU POQUITO MAS. and yes, if i could, i would marry you.

better than baja fresh if you ask me. love their carne asada tacos and fish tacos. Great salsa bar and so inexpensive. Food is tasty and not too greasy.
burritos are awesome. nice and huge!
Parking sucks! (Even though we got parking right outside lol)
It was my first time there after going to Universal Studios. My friends told me that it was good so I was down to try good food. I got a carne asada plate. I really liked it! It didn't taste like dirty carne asada from the taco trucks which is fine with me. The meat was very flavorful and the condiments you get for yourself is even better.
It's been a very long time since I've came here so i can't really remember much, but I do know that I've always wanted to go back!
And I swear we saw a guy that looked like johnny depp! Came in and took off with his food! lol
I love Mexican food, and have been spoiled by my grandmother's & mom's mexican food - so it's hard for me to ever think a restaurant comes close to what I grew up with.
Poquito is good, not greasy, and you get the same thing no matter what location you go to. I am a fan of the dinner plate and tortillas, but have tried the burritos, tacos, and enchiladas, and they were all decent. They have good prices, but parking is HORRIBLE at this location. The Woodland Hills and Burbank location have the most room and were the cleanest.
This place is really good fresh Mexican food.
I went here this afternoon with a friend that I miss dearly, and while that was the best part of the meal (seeing him), the food was quite a treat as well.
I had two veggie tacos, and when I was asked if I wanted black or pinto beans I ordered one of each. And all I can say is YUM!
The portions were a nice size, not too big or small, and prices were reasonable. The salsa bar had a nice variety of goodies to add to your food.
Overall I would recommend the place if you happen to be in the area.
Overrated food.
Oh yeah and parking sucks.
I was suprised by how much I liked this place. Thought it would be like Baja Fresh or La Salsa..thankfully it was MUCH better.
The variety of the salsas are great.
I had the beef taco, chicken tastado both Petito size. I love how they have a small portion sections of the menu....for anyone who doesnt feel like gaining 5 pounds. Good stuff.
Also had the tortilla soup...had a couple bites and wasnt impressed. Basically was eating carrots and chips...i'll pass.
My boyfriend had a beef taco and burrito. He seemed to enjoy both as the meat was pretty damn good.
Cheap prices also help. Good choice.
Long standing purveyor of the best carne asada burrito this side of the rockys, Poquito Mas has been saturating my taste buds with its fresh marinated meat grilled to the perfect point of char and tenderness for nearly 20 years now.
One night, I came out with J.Lo for a quick bite before heading to City Walk. Before we arrived, he adamantly advised me to order the carne asada. However, once we walked into the small establishment, I became side-tracked by their huge and delicious looking menu.
Me: What should I get? Fish tacos? Shrimp burrito? Tostada? Mmm...I want it all. Oink.
Him: Dude, get the carne asada.
Me: Okay, I'll get the Nature's Grill quesadilla with chicken.
A few minutes later, I got my chicken quesadilla with fajita-style vegetables, and he got his carne asada burrito. I was very happy with my food; the white chicken pieces were tender and the grilled veggies were flavorful.
But then I took a bite of his burrito (pause). Holy crap, this was good!!! Damn good. The pieces of beef were so tender, juicy, and wonderfully seasoned. The tortilla was toasty crisp and there were no beans, a major plus. All of a sudden, my yummy quesadilla seemed to be not quite as yummy a second earlier. I became very sad.
Him: I told you to get carne asada.
Me: Shut up and gimme another bite of your burrito! Oink.
For lunch, the Studio Plate for $6.95 is bulletproof. You get about half-a-dozen strips of fresh charbroiled chicken over a bed of white rice, black beans, Caesar salad, tostadas, handmade mini-flour tortillas and a bonus side of their sinful red pepper sour cream. A beast of a feast for the sum invested.
Four stars for Poquito's Ahi burrito...taco plates with black beans...generally friendly service and late hours.
Pretty consistent, though Tortas up the street near Vineland kicks all other Mexican food's booty in my humblest -- most because I like their salsa better. Don't get me wrong on Poquito here. Salsa is a very personal thing. Tastes are vast and typically matter of preference like flavors of ice cream it seems.
I simply come to Poquito for the Ahi Burritos mostly, and prefer Tortas for all else.
Not to mention parking's a NGHTMARE when Mama Juana's salsa club is popping. If I'm going to Mama Juan's though? Well sheeesh this is perfect ;-)
Food is great, marked down to 'good' because it's a bit pricey for a taco stand. I like the wet burritos the best.
The real show starts when the cashier bounces your change back to you, yep she IS that good. She can bounce a quarter into you open palm 98.99% of the time. One time she bounced five coins in a row into my shirt pocket. Just look at the counter and you can see where the Formica has worn from the side show.
"It's like Baja Fresh, but better." That's what my friend told me. But how can that be? I already love The Baja so much, what could be better?
Poquito Mas. That's what. Minus 1 star for parking. Otherwise ... YUMMMMMM!!!
Oh how I wish I could give it 4.5 stars. I will say that this is a staple of the community and those that know about it know and go. Its been around since way before Baja Fresh was born, but as much as I love this place, i won't really say its better, but I'll say the menu is more diverse and what they do, they do very well. I will say, since the 80's, I have been here at least 50 times. I think the beef they use is at least as good as the excellent beef at baja fresh, or even better, but Baja seems to do chicken a bit better IMHO.
If you like La Salsa, then this is a notch or two better. If you like Rubio's I believe the food here is also better.
One way to sum up my feeling for this place, when I find my self driving in this area, my mouth starts to water and my car starts to drive itself to their lot.
There is nothing more authentically Mexican in this world than this California-style Mexican restaurant. Parking may be hell on earth (it's better at the Magnolia Blvd. one), but the food is well worth it. Everyone knows that I'm a raper of the ahi tuna population of the world. So the fresh ahi tuna tacos are a perfect fit for me. The shrimp tacos san felipe are also amazing. It would be hard to believe if anything here was canned or not of the freshest quality. As Oprah would say, you better kick Baja Fresh to the curb, honey.
I really do love the Poquito Mas, and t his from a guy who usually just busts into a Taco Bell for his fiesta fix.
Bu tI swear their burritos have gotten smaller in the past few months. Anyone else think this?
Other than that probably the best Mexican in the Valley.
You can see my review on the NoHo location for overall. This location tho, tough parking at times, however, killer food.. The portions I find are consistantly better here then at the other locations I've been to. The guys/gals behind the counter seems to have the pace going too, they run flat out which can be neat to watch at times. There's also one man cashier who can be entertaining with change and had a good personality as well. Another nice thing about this location is the people watching if your into that, being that it's down from Universal, the theaters and such you get some characters coming and going.
Overall, I prefer this one to the NoHo if I find myself out in the area.
Oh man, I totally ordered the wrong thing here. I was thinking about getting either the shrimp or ahi tuna burritos but no, at the last minute, I changed my mind to something "healthy." I got the "nature's grill" burrito and added chicken to it.
WHAT THE POLLO? Where is it? For an extra fee of $1.95, there was a piddly three pieces, all cut in different shapes. Some where flat and long, some were tiny and chunky.
I guess I should have just accepted the burrito as is, with a ton of beans.
The veggies in the burrito were few and far between, one strip of red bell pepper, a couple of sliced mushrooms, some chunks of red onions. The burrito may have seemed huge but it was because it was ALL BEANS. I like beans but not that much.
The chips were good. Almost all the salsas were good. And they gave you a cup of water with lemon. Still, I'm going to stick with La Salsa next time. At least when you add extra meat to something there, you aren't surprised with odd bits and ends.
I love Poquito Mas! I always order the shrimp burrito mojado (wet). The shrimp are always big, fat, moist and never over cooked. The salsa bar is great and they have the more authentic style of chips. (Like real tortillas fried in grease.)
Why not full marks? Mostly I think their prices are too steep for what is essentially a taco stand. As busy as they always seem to be, I may be off base on that. Also, the parking situation is horrible. That isn't thier fault, but it does detract from the experience. (Lucky for me it is a comfortable walk from work.)
I've even had a star sighting there. A few cast members from E.R. were having lunch there one day. I had to look twice as I'm usually good at misidentifying celebrities. (I once thought a homeless guy was Lou Diamond Phillips.)
Food's good, but the first and probably last time I ate here, I ordered a burrito VERY specifically, as well as my coworker's food. Somehow my burrito got mixed up with someone else's order and voila, I was incredibly upset for my lunch hour while my coworker and boss ate. It might've been an innocent mistake, but I only get an hour to eat - and I spent most of it waiting for the food to be prepared and then walking up and down Cahuenga to get to and from work.
The service was good, despite that one fatal mistake, and they were nice.. I dunno. The food was good (the stuff they got right), but it's true. First impressions are everything.
If you stop by here to eat, make sure BEFORE you leave that you got the right stuff.
Also, be incredibly wary of parking in the lot provided. It's super tiny and it wouldn't the first (or even 100th) time that someone got in an accident from backing out or backing in, in that damn lot. In fact, my boss said that she wouldn't park in that lot even if someone paid her a million dollars (even more!)
Delicious fresh Mexican Food. Better than Baja Fresh. Poquito Mas nailed it.
I have kind of always found it to be rather silly when some Yelpers take the time to review a chain restaurant, drugstore, alpaca farm i.e. "The seven layer burritos at the Taco Bell at the corner of Beverwood and Pico has higher quality fake guacamole that they use." Really? I do stand to be corrected on the original Del Taco in Barstow that seems to be an exception to the rule of chain consistency. Poquito Mas seems to be a mini LA chain that I had never been to. Because it is a chain of perhaps less then 15 locations, I decided to temporarily break my rule of reviewing chain restaurants. I decided to get a burrito and shelled out 7 bucks for a micro chicken burrito and some chips. My 2 stars are in regard to the quality of the burrito I had and the bland salsa that they were serving. Flavor? The chicken had no flavor and there was no substance to the burrito and it was way overpriced. Not a fan and I would like to go to a Mexican joint that I do not have to bring my own hot sauce to.
This is sucky but fast mexican food. It's good if you're REALLY hungry and want something cheap. I got the vegetarian burrito (not the one w/ just cheese and lettuce, the one with actual vegetables). I think they called it garden deluxe or something equally as cheesy.
It was so bland, i can't even possibly begin to expound on it. I stuffed the thing w/ jalepenos from their side bar and it still sucked.
Maybe their non-veggie stuff is better? BLAH
Carne Asada Burrito.
LOVE this place. the best fast food mexican around LA.
Workers are great!! Prices are reasonable!
Parking---------eh, not so good. to small of a parking lot.
Street parking - OK when available.
LOVE the CHEF MEX and the shrimp Burrito.
Be careful with the black beans........DANGEROUS!!! :):):):)
once a month certain individuals on God's green Earth experience a change that moves us to emotion, decision, bloatation, cravation, and pure negative bliss......"rat bastards!! yes I mean you!! you have a ding dong, don't you!!!!!"
today i woke up ready to endure this fantasy world.....
i had three lunches. wow.
i had breakfast, two hours later, Poquito Mas...enchiladas, burrito, and nachos, then took a client out for sushi...then came back and with in a hour had lunch again: burrito, nachos, and enchiladas. I want to die as i sit here in my high waist gray pinstripe suit from JC Penny's. (Worthington Collection.)
classy.
Me gusta poquito mas. The veggie quesadilla is the perfect blend of veg and cheese, and I dig the steak tacos much better than that "fresh" place. Great for a quick lunch; this location has an awkward patio set-up, and is hard to get around in, parking's a bitch, but it only adds to the character. See how forgiving I am when I'm in love?
