Four stars for a great buy! Cheap cheap cheap!
So the original plan for the night was to go to Hog Heaven. Except they close at 7:00 p.m. (what is up with that???) so I found this place as another "nearby" BBQ.
Normally, I like to see a menu before going, but based on the "hole in the wall" description, I figured it's worth a shot.
So it's a tiny place, in an intersection with a couple of tiny strip malls and a gas station. You walk up to a counter, and there is a menu on the wall using those plastic letters - and it's hard to figure out what's what, but I ordered two pork shoulder sandwiches, a chicken leg, a side of turnip greens, baked beans and potato salad for my co-worker and me. (The chicken was a back-up in case there were problems with the pork - or vice versa.)
There were some funky stuff on the menu - goat, pig feet, chitterling and bologna sandwich.
The pork shoulder was tender and moist - I wish he dabbed a little more BBQ sauce on it. The sides were all good, but the turnip greens were my favorite - tender, flavorful with a nice bitter edge. It was tangy with a bit of a vinegar-induced bite. The baked beans were not too sweet, but I must admit, I like J. Alexander's tequila beans better - of course, if you consider the price differential...
The best part was that the whole thing came out to about 15 bucks. And on Tuesdays and Sundays, you can apparently get two shoulder sandwiches for $4.00 (it was $3.30 for me.) The sides were like $2.50, so at that price, why would you ever go to the Golden Arches?
Next time, I'll get the goat. Or the pig's feet. Or not.
Pop's. They've got barbecued goat. Goat! Mmm, pulled goat sandwich. It's smoky and delicious, kind of like lamb but less greasy.
The best pulled pork, awesome greens, good beans, pretty damn tasty sauce and they know how to smoke meat right, just like your Mom.
The only thing I don't recommend here is the ribs. Too sloppy, not quite enough flavor. For delicious dry rubbed ribs, hit up Mary's. Oh, and watch out for the takeout containers they put the sides and sauce in -- the lids are the most brittle ever and will definitely snap by the time you make it home, dumping delicious juices and smoky sauces all over your car if you're not on top of things.
I'm sorry, this place was simply awful! We are from Chicago, visiting Nashville. We tried this place based on the two reviews above. First of all this place should aspire to be a hole in the wall. It is basically a walk up counter in a teeny tiny half lot on a strip mall, not that there is anything wrong with that, but while looking inside, all one see is CRAP. I'm not talking Applebees/Bennigans kinda crap on the walls. I'm talking needing some serious needs a housekeeper kind of crap. The kind of crap that makes one wonder about how frequently the health inspector visits.
As for the food. IF I could give it less than one star I would. We each got a "Long Plate" (still tryna figure out what that is.) The meat was old tasting, as though it has been prepared earlier in the day, or perhaps the night before. It was tough, and had what I can only descibe as a "game-y" taste. Very unappealing. I had the beans, typical canned variety, and potato salad, easily purchased from any supermarket deli. The husband had the coleslaw, typical southern vinegar style, and the turnip greens, ok. The total for all this was 21.00. Not cheap, not good, and not worth it.
