It's a big dive bar with big diner style booth seating on the right, space at the bar and old arcade games. The bartender is fantastic. He poured what was essentially a full shot of whiskey on some really cheap special they were having. Most other bartenders would have just stopped pouring when the bottle was done, but he went and got a fresh bottle and poured from that to top off the shot. I know it's not much, but I appreciate that. It's consideration and decency toward bar patrons.

I went on a Saturday night. The crowd seemed normal. It wasn't a scary dive. They have a huge doorman. That guy must have been 6'10" or so. It was crazy. He's not even fat. Anyways, the bar was nice, the pours were more than fair, the specials were cheap and it was chill to sit with your friends and go smoking outside. It's a totally decent, non-scary place and I'm happy it's actually just a few blocks from me.

The bathrooms, to be honest, were totally okay. Maybe I've been to too many bars at this point in my life, but I can honestly say the bathrooms were 70 percentile and above in terms of cleanliness. Perfectly respectable bar with really good, fast, considerate bartenders.

    Dive bar?  WHAT?!?!?!

Only in the bay area would people call this place a "dive bar". Let me tell you about a dive bar people....

DIve bars are seedy dark holes where drunk old washed up men / women hide from the sun as they wash their faded dreams with cheap whiskey and beer.

The floor has a crust on it that harbors life yet undiscovered by man and the bartender has a 1000 yard stare so hard all the mirrors had to be taken down.

Silly hipsters wouldn't know a dive if it gave them syphillis.

Yes the drinks are cheap and it isn't the beauty bar or Zietgiest.....but it's not a dive either.   Its just a bar, your average city corner bar.  If it were a dive they would't allow hipsters in because the regulars would eat them and listening to hispters rage about why a place doesn't have PBR would cause the bartender to rip heads.

New to the San Francisco area, my lil' brother and I wanted to hit up a couple of bars that were local to 24th st to pass the Friday night hours.

Our first stop Pop's. There was very few people although it was already 10pm. The bar is small, dark, dingy and with the eerie feeling you have some one starting at you. I LOVE IT! We found a couple of empty seats on the booths as we started to order some drinks.

Drinks were very cheap I had a shot of a mystery tequila and a red stripe, the total was 9 dollars.... (im starting to like SF a whole lot more than LA). However the bartender there whose name escapes me was a bit of snobby bitch...yeah I said it.

The gentlemen beside me after hearing that was my birthday ensued a conversation about the city, his life and how much he hates both. (I needed to get out, fast). After this interesting beginning we moved to the next stop....

If you're looking for reasonably-priced booze and a fun crowd, Pop's is solid.  Plus, there's tons of great food all over the Mission, so it's pretty much got everything - AND they're dog-friendly.  Go to Pop's if you're looking to get crunk (i.e. not wearing your nice shoes).

I always drag my friend here when I visit her because they have Racer 5 on Tap and a heavy handed pour for their cocktails fo' cheap, y'all.
Sure, this might add to the craziness that happens outside of this place - but... that's just part of the vibe as I've mentioned before.

Plus, the bartender's are awesome.... they have an oldies night, pups around to pet and there's Free Bacon on Mondays.

Ok, drastic change has to be made unfortunately. Besides being very inconvenient to get to, they have the worst DJs I've ever seen. Well there might be an exaggeration, but it's pretty close. I went on a Saturday night (maybe not the best night to go there) and it was like bro bar for hipsters.

The DJs were seriously 2 OC looking dudes seating behind their Macs. The playlist started with Modest Mouse and then went down hill from there with a mix of Jimmy Eat World, The Ataris, Blink 182, and such. Seriously? You're gonna play Jimmy Eat World after Modest Mouse? I'm no music snob but 90's pop punk are THE WORST bands and obviously you know nothing about 90's indie rock. Were you really dj-ing or just playing random shit from your Pandora?

The only highlight from this bar was they make good drinks and for $6 I got my sweet tea vodka in 16oz glass. Solid bartender tho it's not enough to keep me coming back.

IDK, I like dives and I used to have a thing for hipsters, so this place was kind of a thing for me. Taken a few people here, but they were probably hipsters, so take it for what you will. Priced to sell.

They have a great juke box, some awesome old school video games (pin ball and a table top Ms. Pac Man).

They don't do it anymore, but they used to have bad ass raffles here during Happy Hour and that got me hooked. I won a sparkly gold piggy bank from China Town and a Virgin Mary nightlight, which I still use (and works) to this day. Pretty sure this was like 5 years ago.

Don't come here if you want a mojito. Don't come here if your name is Craig. Don't come here if you watch Jersey Shore. Just sayin'.

this place is disgusting but i think that's the point.

i think a bunch of people would agree with me when i say that this is the quintessential hipster dive bar in the mission.  you'll often see a bunch of tight-jean wearing bike boys smoking cigarettes out front.  i think they take shifts.

i've done some sunday day-drinking here.
    some late-night saturday drinking.
    a few after-dinner drinks.

and Pops never gets less disgusting.  but that's okay.  there's a photobooth and a pool table.  the bathrooms are BEYOND horrendous so save your pee until you get home (your own or someone else's, wink wink).

oh, they have purse hooks under the bar so that's a major plus.

It's hard to describe Pop's in anything less than holistic terms since it's far greater than the sum of its parts.

I could describe the beverage prices or the dog guests or the clientele or the movies they show but all of these traits are reductionist.

Many "interesting" nights have either started or ended at Pop's. It is a hub of consequence.

Much like Thee Parkside, I'm definitely not cool enough to hang at Pop's on a regular basis. But with that being said, if I were sleeved with tats, got around town on the same skateboard I've been riding since the Tony Alva days, owned nothing but leather jackets, and only bought shoes at HUF, I'd be a regular here faster than you could say 'Dogtown and Z-Boys.'

There's no room for trust fund hipsters at this joint -- it's the real deal. These cats are the forefathers and mavens of the great American Apparel plot for world domination, and something tells me they'd happily ring the necks of any deep-V wearing art school dropout who tries to step on their turf with Serato boxes and bedazzled Toms slippers. Not shoes, slippers (c'mon, those things are ridiculous... even if they are a philanthroper's wet dream). Anyway, I think you get the point as to the general make up of their patrons....

As you might expect with a lead up like that, as for the space itself, you'll find dark sticky floors, cheap drinks, DJs spinning real vinyl in the back of the room, and bartenders who'd just as quickly give you the finger than entertain the idea of making you a lemon drop or apple tini, no matter which sorority sister is celebrating a birthday.

If you're looking for the perfect night to play, hit 'em up on Monday when they'll throw down a plate of bacon with your tall Budweiser. I have a weakness when it comes to salty cured back fat, so the idea of coming here every single Monday isn't completely out of the question.

Yawwwnnn...what's there to say that hasn't already been said? Run of the mill dive bar in the Mi$$ion that's filled to the brim with hipsters.

Pros: Cute light up outside sign. Neighborhood bar. Bacon Mondays. Long happy hour. photo booth.

Cons: Too many dirty smelling hipsters.

Strictly as an alcohol providing establishment this place is fairly good.  Cheapish drink, friendly and attentive bartenders, and a pool table.

That being said, the patrons are pretty awful.  It isn't that they're hipsters, but that they are the judgmental type.  Came here with my Filipino/Hawaiian buddy and we were getting stares all night, since we're not hipsters, and he isn't right.  I guess we just didn't blend in, although the people working there are pretty cool.  Also, their patrons proceed onto 24th each night to tag white vans, most likely owned by local and minority-owned small businesses.

Moral is- great place to be a hipster and white.  You're not welcome if you're brown and non-hipster.

My first few visits to Pop's were marred by the presence of tools, hipsters, and dimwits. Since then, however, they've mostly cleared out and now I am a 100% booster of this place. Pop's has an plenty of space inside, an interesting layout, a pool table, friendly bartenders, and cheap drinks. (Oh, and a photo booth if that's your bag.) This is the kind of place that I'd probably keep to myself if I lived nearby.

But I don't live nearby, and my neighborhood doesn't have anything like this place. So here I am, telling you all about Pop's. Out of spite, mostly.

I love Pop's as long as it's not emo night.  The sight (and sound) of 40 or so twentysomethings drunkenly belting out Saves the Day and AFI hits in unison was something that I never want to experience again.

Other than that, Pop's is a pretty solid joint.  The typical mustachioed keds-wearing crowd is prevalent here, but what are you gonna do...it's the Mission.  Cheap drinks, good juke, pool tables, nice staff.  The photo booth is famous.  I don't remember most of the pictures I have taken in there, but that's probably better anyway.

Last night I went to yoga with a friend of mine after which, we decided to hit up pops for a drink.  That turned into five Budweiser tall boys ($2 ALL NIGHT), and a grill cheese sandwich with fries from the diner across the street.

You think that's bad? What's more, I unsuccessfully attempted to make a booty call when all I ended up doing was passing out with my pooch. I know what you're saying, "It's never a good idea to make a booty call after drinks at Pops," or  maybe like a good friend of mine says" Just know when to use it and know when to pass out gracefully".

Either way, I really like keeping the stool warm at this place.  Every third Tuesday of the month is Emo Karakeo Night--well worth it!

Cool little dive bar with cheap beer and for the most part a pretty chill and friendly crowd.

We shot a few games of pool here, and I have to give them credit for having a really nice pool table.  Can't blame the table for being off if you biff a shot here.  They also have a South Park pinball machine, which even though I didn't play looked awesome.

The bartenders were a little slow, but it was the Fourth of July, so maybe they were drinking too and should be cut a little slack.

However they did clear everyone out around 8:00 which was kind of weak, but did afford me the opportunity to see something funny.  While I was waiting for my friends to finish their beers I was outside having a smoke and witnessed a mass exodus of folks on fixed-gear bicycles.  I guess I hadn't realized how many hipsters were here until I saw that.  Pretty amusing.

Now I know why people call this place Poops.

I came in again and the place smelled like sharts and BO. The doorman overheard me saying that it smelled like the toilet overflowed, his reply was "it probably did". The clientele is the most annoying breed of skater hipsters, like the place isn't good enough for regular hipsters anymore.

I will say that the bartender was very nice and attentive, I figure he thought we looked like we'd tip.

I met a "secret friend" at Pop's the other night for drinks & conversation.

Though Pop's is, literally, two blocks from my apartment I'd never been there... I don't know why, as my roommate (Bonnie) told me that they serve free bacon there on Monday nights.  You'd think that would be impetus enough for me to go there immediately...

For some reason it wasn't.  Maybe I'm losing my edge.

Anyhow - this is where I met my "secret friend" the other night (b/c it is close to home & it was raining.)

My "secret friend" & I were both pretty impressed with Pop's - it's a great dive-punky bar - one which was even crowded on a weeknight.  The drinks are very cheap, there's a pool table, a photo booth & the bar has it's regular creepy guys who listen in on your private conversations... Making lewd comments under their breath as if they were a part of it...  Plus, lots of punk rock Mish hipsters... PLUS, PLUS - two blocks from Taqueria El Farilito which stays open until midnight on weekdays, 2am on weekends and is the perfect place to get grub to soak up the cheap drinks you spent time consuming at Pop's.

    Plus Free Bacon Monday.

What else does one need?  Five stars, baby.

Okay, so I went to Pop's the other night with some random people from a bbq I was at, who found out it was my birthday and wanted to buy me shots.  The bartender bought me one too!  :)

Pop's is small and totally fun.  They have $2 beers, a rad photobooth that's plastered with graffiti, pinball machines and a fun karaoke night.  It's weird to me that dogs are allowed in bars here, but whatever - someone had a really cute one with them that made me smile!

I had a great time, and will surely end up at Pop's again.

Pop's is tragically hip, but I don't mind. As long as it's less hip than The Tube in Portland it's A-OK in my book.

I heard a rumor that "Pop's is the new 540" for those of us former-Inner-Richmonders-turned-Missionaries.

    I don't know.

    I just don't know.

The color scheme -- maybe. But this place is way too hip and sedate to be compared to the 540. They do, however, get bonus points for a pool table. And a photo booth. And an ATM! With a Thrasher sticker on it. Which seemed to my drunken self to be PRETTY DAMN COOL since my bf works for Thrasher (even though it's really totally of no consequence to the bar or this review) and kept me entertained while I withdrew money I couldn't afford to throw away on more alcohol that I definitely didn't need.

But -- not the 540. Where are the awesome, generous, ebullient bartenders? The loud, jovial, friendly, no-scene regulars?

Okay -- I answered my own question. I live in the MISSION now.

This bar could not suck any harder if it were a back-alley crackwhore down on her knees looking to score some rock.

I so wanted to like this place, being as I live five steps away from it and it had the potential to be my local. Any bar where, upon last call, I'm a mere 30 seconds away from my mattress, has to fuck it up pretty hard not to get my vote.

Much has been said here about the tediousness, the prententiousness, and the scab-addleness of Mission hipsters, so I won't elaborate too much on the tedious, pretentious, scabby clientele. I will say that these people, on any average night, act as though this is their first time in a bar. Ever. There is screaming, yelling, hair-pulling, hand-wringing, and puking on a regular basis. Learn to hold your drink, peoples. You're an embarassment to Mission hipsters everywhere.

And the first night I moved in? We enthusiastically popped over to Pops, looking to settle in and introduce ourselves to the bartenders as neighbors and make some friends. What we saw was the bartender doing a healthy coke trade from behind the bar and four sketchy-ass motherfuckers looking to pick a fight with anyone who looked at them crossways. We were later awakened by those same four gentlemen kicking the shit out of a homeless man in the middle of the street at 2:15, one of whom was pissed because he'd gotten the homeless guy's blood on him.

Goddamn, seriously? I wanted to like this place--the drinks are cheap, the vibe has potential, and the photo booth kicks ass. But's it the few dozen that spoil it for the rest of us, huh? Give this one a miss and head down to Dirty Thieves (formerly Treat Street) or Jay and Bee.

The unassuming older man who tried to sell us morphine was by far the most gentlemanly person here.

A great selection of beers for a dive bar; also a great selection of loudmouthed deadbeats.  Pick your poison.  Some friends who recently moved to this neighborhood, former East Bay residents, seemed happy to be within walking distance of various attractions, but I'm hoping they don't count this place.

    Bad Pops! Bad!

You should be so great because you're the first placed I used my ID. You are across the street from the Brava, where I had my film school graduation. You have cheap, plentiful beer.

But it's the plentiful amount of douche bags that kills me. Look, I'm down with hipsters, but not these old guys who seem to want to be both hipster and punk (stick to one fellas - are you sensitive and arty or do you like breaking bones?).

Anyway, as I was talked down from fighting the entire bar last night, I realized. I'm not a huge fan.

Now that I've gotten over the trauma of the incident below, I'm open to hitting up Pop's again. What can I say, that cute 'tender behind the bar serves it up right.

One star for the photo booth.
One star for the pool tables.
One star for erotic photo hunt.
One star for the juke box.
One star for 2 tequila shots and 2 Tecates = $8 total.

Only one star and I will never go back because I saw someone get shot in front of the bar on Friday night. Dive bars aren't few and far between. You can find plenty of good ones all over this city. I'm not your typical Marina girl. I love to venture out into every different 'hood, but there's a reason that I live in the Marina and that's because I'm not trying to get shot while I'm drinking the work week away on a Friday night at Happy Hour. Sorry Pop's, but it's just not worth it.

Okay, you know you're a geek when someone mentions an establishment, and you must IMMEDIATELY go home and Yelp! it. Sort of like my dad, when he'd consult Consumer Reports before making a major purchase.

So my friend Julie's in town from Tucson and says "let's meet at pop's at 9." Sadly, I must be out of it, because i'm like "Pop's? Huh??? Like the mom and pop store on Divis and McAllister?" Yeah, something like that. So I go home and Yelp it. Then I'm like, "Oh yeah, Pop's, hipster bar at 24th in the Mission, know it well." It begats the Cliff Claven in all of us.

Pretty cool little bar. Yeah, it's loaded with hipsters, but I just spent a week in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, so I've hipster--proofed.

This might be the cheapest bar in the City.  They always have good specials and if nothing else you always get the PBR pitcher for $6 which holds about 4 pints.

My friends loved the free bacon on Mondays and its now become a legend among us.  Told with pride to disbelievers who don't understand the concept of free delicious bacon.

My boss now makes fun of me by calling me the beer and bacon guy but I see it as a badge of honor.

Have you ever been to one of those bars about 20 miles outside of a medium-sized town like Winnipeg or Pittsburgh? You know what I'm talking about, the local bar where everyone who never left that small "suburb of a suburb" has been going since they turned 21. And now they're all 45 and look like stereotypes you see on King of the Hill or Art e documentaries on North American gun-nuts. See, those bars are fun. You go there and chat somebody up and they'll regale you with stories of how they were the star pitcher on the baseball team, almost made it as a yacht-rock singer in the early 80s, or how some day, they will own all that farm land over there.  You call it an early night after many drinks and driving back to your hotel feeling enlightened, if not slightly drunk, after having engaged in quasi-reflective conversation with a total stranger.

In a nutshell, that's what Pop's is like. Except these guys aren't 45, they're 23. And they're not ranting about their past accomplishments or lifetime peaks...Instead, they're telling you all about that novel they're going to write, the band they're going to form, or the film they're going to shoot once they get the funds. But still, you have a good time...removing yourself from their naivite and sheltered existence and engaging in quasi-intellectual conversations on the merits of Francis Bacon's supposed mysogyny or whether Brakhage is actually watchable. Patrons of Pop's, I salute you. You are truly the salt of the earth. The imported kind.

This is certainly my "neighorhood" dive....and that's true for several "regulars" I see there everytime I stop in.

It's cheap. Like, HELLA CHEAP. You can always get a pitcher of Pabst for $6.50 (except on Tuesdays, when it's only $5). The Happy Hour is awesome ($2 wells and $2 domestics). The daily specials are great (Wednesday is $1 Hammes, if you're into that thing).

The jukebox is a thing of dreams. In one sitting, I played Minor Threat, the Misfits, and Operation Ivy. The next person up knocked out Iron Maiden and Madonna. After that, I think I heard Snoop Dogg.

There is a photo booth ($3 for 4 pictures/black and white/on the darker side) that has captured many of my drunken nights.

A lot of people who have known about this bar for ages are jaded on it, claiming it's stuffed with hipsters and over-rated. Well, welcome to San Francisco. :)

I love you, Pop's....even if you're in a sketch part of town. May your bicycle-decorated walls and dirty pool table live on!

    I love Pops, LOVE Pops.
    Heres why:
    -Friendly bartenders
-Groovin' tunes that are reminiscent of wacky high-school hijinks
-Very dark and good for making out
    -Cheap drinks
-a pool table (ok so lots of places have pool tables but still)
    but most impotantly...A PHOTO BOOTH!!!
Seriously I'd go to this place just for that.
I definitely don't get a hipster vibe at all. If anything it's almost anti hipster. Or maybe I'm just too drunk to notice.
PS It definitely has a bit of a "funk" to it, like a mens lockeroom or a frathouse (not that I've ever been to one but thats how I'd imagine it would smell).

Edited to add: Last night there was a Basset Hound there. Thats right a BASSET HOUND!!! Could anything have made it better? I don't think so.

Pop's is not on my list of the  bars that I frequent, but on the list of bars I just "end up going to"

    pros:
    1. photo booth
    2. nice bartenders that replace drinks that dumb f-ers happen to think is their own
    3. blended margaritas
    4. nice when it's empty (rarity)

    cons:
    1. over the amt. of 10 people it's a fire hazard
    2. skanky bitches everywhere
    3. and well it's kinda off the beaten path for my stumble/ride walk bike home thing.
    4. I almost always get into some confrontation waiting (yes waiting always) to use the bathroom

If you live in the hood its a great place to "catch a twist" while you do laundry.

    Happy hours 4 - 8 pm everyday

    Different drink specials every night

    Pool table.

Never seen a hot girl in there that I wasn't with.

Get over your anti-hipster rage (you know that attitude just makes you more of a hipster yourself, right?) and give this bar a chance. If you're into super nice AND super attentive bartenders with exquisite drink makin' skills, then you're in luck.  If you like photo booths that give you black and white strips (which makes everyone look prettier and handsome-er, with or without beer goggles on), then you're even luckier. Pool, pinball, a table top video game, and, of course, erotic photo hunt all ensure your visit to be both drunken and productive. . .well, if you're like me and consider playing games to signify productivity.

Jessi's beer raffle is every Tuesday from 4-9pm, and she gives away super prizes that only YOUR eyes will BELIEVE in PERSON! And you win them just for drinking! I'm totally not lying! Amazing! Every day's a gift!

This is a fantastic happy hour bar, but I enjoy Wednesday nights for the $1 Hamms special. The weekends get a little rowdy and very crowded, but hey, live a little.

And if all the hipsters still continue to weird you out, just think: at least YOU can legally drink alcohol! And we all deserve pats on the back for that one.
    -------------------------
    9/07/06 ADDENDUM:
Jessi and Halsey now provide free bbq (for carnivores, opportunivores, and vegetarians alike), rotating DJs, and $4 pint glass-sized Mojitos or Margaritas (as well as the standard $2.50 draft beers and $2.00 well drinks fare) from 4pm-9pm on Thursdays. Have I mentioned what fabulous bartenders these ladies are? Well, they're drink-making geniuses. And total babes.

    BEST DAY EVER!

I love Pop's. I love it so much I ended up working there.

It's unapologetically what a neighborhood dive bar is supposed to be -- cheap, gritty and full of disaffected and tragically-flawed misanthropes straight out of the pages of a Bukowski novel.

Plus, there's free bacon on Monday nights.
