Great atmosphere; the staff are friendly and proud of their product, as they should be - the food here is awesome. The BBQ'd oysters are the best thing I've ever eaten. I could eat them all day, then eat them in my after-life.
The fish here is fresh and cooked simply as to not ruin a good peice of fish. Also a nice selection of beers and a patio for when the weather allows. -

Whenever I'm working for my friend Hugh as his Production assistant down here in the hinterlands of Morgan Hill, we always drop by Poppy's for some serious grub served with a dose of dry wit from Michael, the owner of this fine establishment.
The burgers are to die for, and the sammy's are just devine. There's a great selection of wines at the wine bar, and Michael serves up a mean cup 'o' Joe on the other end of the spectrum. Everything is fresh and very tasty- always a good thing.
But that's not why we go there.
Michael is one of those naturally gifted comic personalities. His sardonic humor always has us cracking up, and he also drops in some sage philosophical advice. The food and the atmosphere of the joint are all bonuses--as is the killer meat and fish selection. He's got some lobsters in the tank ready to go for those so inclined, and there's some lovely ribeye steak that looks delicious even uncooked.
Don't be fooled, this guy knows his stuff.
Even so, getting to know him is the best part of the experience of coming here. And, he's taken a shine to my partner-in-crime, constantly trying hook him up with a date, since he's recently been single.
Anyone can serve up good food, but only a cool cat will try to serve up a hottie for a single guy pal! -

I was SOOOO surprised to find seafood -fresh seafood- in Morgan Hill. The construction going on outside on 3rd street is a little confusing but don't let that stop you from eating at Poppy's.
Michael & Jana, the owners, are very friendly and knowledgeable. Michael told us about the Argentinian grass-fed beef he was adding to the regular menu. They can also special order any kind of meat or seafood you want, even the "exotic" meats like alligator, bison, ostrich, etc. The fish behind the counter was some of the freshest I've ever seen too.
All food is grilled out on the patio and the outside area is quite large, a good place to eat in the summertime. We sat inside since it was a chilly evening. I had the wild Alaskan salmon, usually served with veggies and baked potato but they were out of veggies that night (???) so I got a salad instead. I didn't ask for it, I was told I was getting it. Except for the salmon being overcooked - the skin side was actually burned to a crisp - it was tasty. Husband had the steak and said it was the best he's ever had. Thursday nights are 'Back to the 70's' nights (price-wise) and they serve hot dogs, burgers, mac & cheese & tuna melts in addition to their regular menu.
There's a small bar area to the left and a few of the owners' friends were gathered for a few beers. Definitely a friendly, relaxed, locals place. It was nice. We'll definitely be going back. Jana did say they were famous for their burgers so next time I'll try one. -

I just noticed that I missed reviewing this place before now... and I definitely wanted to put my 2 cents in ;)
Absolutely GREAT customer service here! I needed a Turkey for Canadian Thanksgiving Dinner in October (which is a bit of a task to find ;) - and the owner ordered one in for me. When I went to pick it up we started to chit-chat about Morgan Hill, and how great the town is to live in (maybe I should review the whole town too ;) And, as I was leaving he shouted out, "Welcome to Mayberry!" :)
They have a lot of great wild fish here (not farmed). And, apparently he puts on a dinner on Friday nights and prepares the dinner from his fresh meat selection. I also heard that he will prepare hotdogs and drinks for the Craft Store in behind, when people are having birthday parties for their kids.
The outside of the store looks like a high-end restaurant, and then it's your regular meat-market inside... which was kind of neat.
Quality Service & Quality Product & Fair Pricing = Happy Customers :)Listed in: My Neighborhood

Just thought an update was deserved by Poppy's since I recently went to the Valentine's Day Dinner and Music. My husband and I made reservations for this intimate yet very fun night.
My husband and I shared the Prawn Cocktail which was so refreshing then ordered a Ribeye Steak with Baked Potato and Sauteed Greens for one meal and the other was the Chilean Sea Bass with Rice Pilaf and Greens.
First of all, the steak was amazing and HUGE! It was cooked perfectly and the rub or marinade used was so unique! It was almost a sweet aftertaste but so savory and delicious as well... potato was potato but went perfectly with the steak.
The Chilean Sea Bass was cooked absolutely perfect as well. My husband used to fish and sell fish so he is a hard person to please when it comes to fish and he was SOLD! The greens seemed so simple but were incredible and I could've eaten a whole plate of them!!!
Then dessert was drunken strawberry shortcake... OMG DELISH!
There was a fantastic piano player as well who played all the favorites and when people were done eating we started a sing a long and it was so much fun.
I can't wait to go back for St. Pats and the Pig Feed!!! And of course in between them for some of that fantastic surf and turf.
Thanks Mike and Jana!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

You don't know customer service until you've come to Poppy's. You also don't know fresh fish. The owner of this store and restaurant strives to give you consistenly the best. Mostly a fish and poultry shop, but you can get a few things on the grill and eat there.
They know their stuff, and they also know the best desserts...straight from Gizdich ranch. -

What I liked about this place:
-balsamic vinegar salad
-oysters (raw and cooked)
-illy's tea
-house bread/butter
-snapper was flaky good
-owner is super friendly
-crab cocktail
-portions are huge
-friendly waitress
-menu is entirely seafood
Warning: very limited seating outside so its mainly an outside restaurant. A bit nippy at night but they have a few space heaters! -

I was so sad to find out they are no longer serving sandwiches.
BOOO HOOOO! They were the best & only in town =(
Now I'm forced to go to those other fast food sammy joints.
Well it's still great and I can still get my fresh seafood along with my Republic of Teas! -

I have been waiting for the chance to try out the only Steak and Seafood restaurant in Morgan Hill.
When you walk in you really know that you are in a fish market. The restaurant is divided in two. The back part is where the seafood and steaks are displayed and food preparation and the front part has about 10 small tables and a small bar stand for beer. All very casual and unassuming. There is also a larger area for dining outside. Since it was raining they might have moved everything inside.
Over all the service was very friendly and prompt.
We started with the raw oysters. They tasted a little too fishy and were not very cold. No bed of ice. So we barely finished a dozen between three of us.
We all ordered rare steaks, a side salad, and beer. Two Rib Eye and one Porterhouse. The Porter House was thick and rare but the two Rib Eyes were medium with only a little pink in the middle. Considering the price that was very disappointing but the flavor was good considering it was over cooked. The total bill was approximately $150.00 or $50.00 each. About average for a decent steak dinner.
We will come back again to try the seafood. Hopefully it will be better than the raw oysters. -

I haven't eaten at this place yet but I did go by there after work today and got myself a nice thick Ribeye from their market.
When I walked into the place the husband and wife, which I'm assuming were the owners, were ready to help me almost immediately. Both were very friendly and talkative and seemed like two very easy going down to Earth people.
The husband was slicing steak from the huge Ribeye cut and when I requested for a fresh cut steak he sliced one off for me without hesitation.
The meat was extremely fresh and as I sit here drafting this review I'm eating it. It is seriously one of the most tender and juicy steaks I've had.
I can't recommend this place enough. I'll write another review after I go next week for their flashback Thursday :)
Highly recommend for fresh raw meats. -

I love their JUMBO cooked white shrimp (which you can also take-home flash frozen in a 2 lb bag).
I enjoyed their stuff at a large house party, then my wife and I went there to pick up more. MMMMmmm, fresh and tasty. We'll also check out feasting there with several ren faire friends soon. -

Morgan Hill, CA
I've had oysters on the half-shell, BBQ'd oysters, BBQ tri-tip sandwich and a healthy sample of the hospitality. If you're looking for five-star dining, this place ain't it. But if you're in need of a good quality seafood fix...this is the place.
The fish and shellfish have always been top notch, fresh whether from the counter (for cooking at home) or from the kitchen (eat here).
Don't let the construction on 3rd street fool you. Enter the lot at the corner of Monterey & Third & go through the back gate..almost like "going to a friend's house for something to eat" feeling...
Keep up the great product!!! -

Dare I say it? Poppy's might have the best crushed ice I've"ve ever had. Unfortunately the meal went downhill from there. The bones in the blackened "fish n chips" stabbed my mouth. The waitress didn't know her head from her ass. Jimmy buffet was played at a level my dad and his college buddies would have been annoyed by. The only way the meal could have been more gross is if there was peanut shells and sawdust on the ground. Desert was the best part of the meal, I had a chocolate shake from mickey d's. The staff was friendly and accommodating which was a nice effort, but not enough to bring me back.

Food was good but the service was pretty poor eg rude. We asked for some extra bread & was told a straight no ... We're out which wasn't exactly true!!

Best place in Morgan Hill!
Michael and Jana are the best and really go the extra mile for the customers. Michael really knows his stuff and makes an honest effort to do the same for his customers. Poppy's is your modern day Cheers! Everyone who walks in is greeted by their first name.
Michael has a sarcastic and loving personality that makes this seafood joint a must when in the valley.
(Try their wines, they have a large selection at great prices!) -

I love love love Poppy's. My parents live in San Martin so whenever we're up for the weekend we always head to Poppy's. The bbq oysters are by far the best I've ever had and I'm not a huge fan of cooked oysters in the first place. Great food, even better people. Maybe I'll stop by tonight!

4 and 5 stars? I don't think so. Ever notice you get the same story about the halibut, "It just flew in last night from Alaska." I know fresh fish, and this place doesn't have it. That is, if you can see through the dirty glass case. Friendly? More like puffed up.
I would never think to buy fish here. Would not recommend it. -

Tonight was the first time we tried Poppy's and we had a fabulous meal. The crab was fresh, quantity good, and price was not bad. It was very casual and stylized as an eat in/take out fish market. We will definitely go there again.

I used to go here to get meat for barbecuing at home but I will never go there again. Michael is a great guy but the older blond haired waitress, she has no idea of what customer service means. She was extremely rude to a member of my party to the point that we walked out. The quality of meat to be found there can also be found at Rocca's market with much better customer service! I will never ever go to this establishment again after the way we were treated!

I love Poppy's. My family and have recently moved to Morgan Hill from San Jose. I have eaten at Poppy's three times and I am more impressed every time. Great food and even better people. Just eat there once and talk to the owners (Mike and Janet) you will be "hooked." You are not going to find two nicer people in the world. I love the buffalo rib-eye steak and my wife the lobster. Two weeks ago my friend and I stopped in to eat at Poppy's on a night where they usually don't have the restaurant open for dinner. They fired up the grill and created another great meal for just us! Who else would do that? It has quickly become my favorite place to go out and eat in Morgan Hill.

Where do I start? I started visiting Poppy's about 2 1/2 years ago and have been in at least once a week since. The seafood is fresh and very reasonably priced. The meat selection is fabulous. I had never tried Buffalo before and Michael (owner) talked me into it and it was amazing! I never was a fan of Barbecued Oysters and now I can't get enough. The staff is great and so friendly. They make you feel like family when you come in. Throwback Thursdays are the best and the pricing takes you back to the time when you got great food at a reasonable cost. If you live in Morgan Hill, you definitely need to visit. And even if you don't live in town, it's worth the trip!

They have the absolute best deals on the best steak, I always think they'd loss money for the price they charge. Love, love, love their grass-fed dry-aged steak. Doesn't get any better than that. Much better than those in Whole Food that easily cost twice as much. It's the only place I buy steak. I'll also recommend Berkshire pork whenever it's available. So juicy and flavorful. As a restaurant, they have great hamburger. Service is excellent. They know their stuff and always go the extra mile. Even though we don't go very often, they remember us from the very beginning. Totally worth the drive.
