Four stars because they sell Kell's Creme, which is the best soft serve ice cream ever, and now I do not need to drive to Revere for it. It is rich, thick, & creamy - just delicious. I do not eat hot dogs, so I just went for ice cream.
I would give them 0 stars for service though. The clerk could not understand what I was asking for, and neither him nor the clerk that handed me my ice cream were friendly at all. I barely got a "Hello".
They have veggie dogs. The big ones, too. One of these on top of a grilled, buttery roll is enough for me. I haven't worked up to getting any of their crazy toppings yet, but perhaps next time around I will let loose.
The other thing is they have redone the inside of the store and now share space with Kell's Kreme (the original on Revere Beach) so you can get a hot dog AND ice cream in the same place. Pretty handy.
There are a few small square tables and bar seating with 4 or 5 stools. Or you can just take your dog and cone over the the beach and enjoy the view.
What makes Popo's fun, aside from the vaguely obscene-sounding name, is that you can top your dog with pretty much anything: even sugar. I can't remember if it was brown sugar or confectionary sugar, but so what? I mean, who has sugar on a hot dog? Evidently, *someone* does, and Popo's is ready for him/her.
But regardless of what you have on them, these are seriously good dogs.
The dog I had was smothered with dijon mustard, sauted onions, sweet pepper relish and plenty of kraut. The baked beans and cole slaw I had on the side were both great. My wife had chili, cheese and god-knows-what-else on hers, and raved about it (I'm sure she'll Yelp about it as well, but I beat her to it!). Actually, she liked hers so much she had a second one.
Prices were reasonable, and the folks behind the counter were friendly and helpful.
My only gripe was the environment: it could have been cleaner (crumbs on the counters, plus there was an overall sticky feeling to the place), and the place was full of smoke from the fryer. And it was wicked hot inside. Probably should have gotten the goods to go and taken them out to the beach, but we didn't. And now our clothes smell like corn dogs. (But I think I kinda like that...)

In short, Popo's hot dogs is incredible. The service is outstanding. Walking in there for the first time you feel like you have known them since childhood. Everything is made fresh and you can get anything and everything on your Hot Dogs. The prices are a little high but for the food and service it is well worth it. The owner is always working and is super friendly.
Anyone and Everyone should try Popo's, It is well worth the trip.
For a great many years there had been a void in Swampscott. A long, tubular void. Then Popo's came along and filled it. In a non-obscene way.
If you just want your basic 'dog, you can get your basic 'dog. But if you want to get funky with it, ah, this is your spot. Popo's is all about the toppings and the creative combinations of toppings you can imagine, and then force yourself to eat.
Sometimes you sit back when you're done and think, "Why the hell did I just eat that?" But sometimes you find yourself thinking, "Damn, that 'dog was amazing and I am a condiment genius." Those are the moments for which Popo's was made.
The space itself is really small, which makes the Popo's experience sometimes a bit onerous in bad weather. The Popo's 'dog is best consumed away from the Popo's counter, on one of the lawns around the Town Hall or down by the beach.
Snag extra napkins. You will need them.
Holy Hot dogs Batman!!! Let's get one thing perfectly clear: I have never been crazy about hot dogs. I know, I know. Leave me alone. Rest assured I am now an avid fan! But I will only order a hot dog at two places: a place in RI, and here at Popo's in Swampscott.
These are the dogs to have. It's true you can choose from a vast array of toppings for your dog. Sugar (yes. Sugar) 3 or 4 types of cheese. Onions, chili, peppers, and the list goes on and on. I had nacho cheese, chili and onions on (both) of mine. Yes I scarfed down two. The husband had a New Yorker and a corn dog and enjoyed both immensely. The kid had pb&j on a hotdog bun.
I didn't find the price unfair for what you get and the service was good. There are only high bar stools and a wall bar to eat at. No tables, but it is a fairly small joint. It was busy while we were there. A steady stream of people came in.
The eating area could have used a wipe down. But the place wasn't so dirty that we couldn't sit and eat and if you don't want to stay there and the weather permits, you can cross the street to the beach where on the walk there are plenty of benches to sit on.
There are napkin dispensers on the bar, but next time I will bring a container of handy wipes (especially with a four year old.) but more because what I had oozed with cheesy goodness and became increasingly difficult to eat. So be prepared, depending on what you order you may just have to shove your face in food. And that's O.K The taste makes up for the mess!
