Oh Poplar House, how you've grown to disappoint me in the face of economic growth! Why, WHY must you be closed for supper now and also offer a catfish buffet on weekends? NO!
This place was the shit when I first moved to town. Actually, it was the ONLY restaurant in town (unless you count the BP which had actual pizza). I mean, where else could you find a $300 painting of a turkey in a field? What other restaurants still have dark wood paneling and actual arcade games from 1986?
They used to serve rooster fries and have square dancing on Saturday nights. But with the booming population, the added in grotesque Applebee's, the Poplar House has been forced to stay open only for breakfast and lunch.
The same waitresses have worked there since I was 12. The decor has changed (they painted the dark wood panels white and removed the arcade games) made it NON SMOKING and I think they've tried overly hard to make it yuppie friendly.
Food has gone downhill in the past year. No longer are the biscuits plump and tasty, but now they are thick and sour tasting. The swiss hamburger looks disgusting and it has just lost it's over all charm and small town, 'this is your only food stop for thirty miles' appeal.
Still worth a shot if you're curious to what the hell I'm talking about. Just don't eat the biscuits and stick with the grilled cheese or patty melt.
*sniffles*
