Review from Ashley G.
I have been wanting to check this store out since I moved to Portland, but it wasn't until recently that my regular swimsuit started falling apart and it felt justifiable to look for a new one. I went to Popina with the hopeful intent of buying a well-fitting, supportive and flattering swimsuit to attend aqua aerobics classes at the gym in... something I can jump around in and not have to keep checking that "the girls" are still covered. I was greeted warmly by the sales lady as soon as I walked in and she asked me what I was looking for. She pointed me in the direction of the "chlorine-resistant" swimsuits for high pool use purposes and offered me some size tips when I asked. I instantly found several suits that I thought would be great for pool-based water exercise. She took those off my hands and set up a fitting room for me while I perused the rest of the amply stocked store. Popina has a huge selection of cute one pieces and mix & match tankinis/ bikinis and other swimwear accessories.
I piled my arms high with suits to try on. There's not even a dressing room limit, just the sign request to please rehang your suits. The light in fitting rooms is actually flattering and not the horrible fluorescent lighting you might be used to and dread. If I were wealthy, I actually could've probably walked out with 5 flattering and super cute swimsuits. This is unheard of in my world. I usually walk out of a bathing suit shopping session in near tears. I debated long and hard about my decision and ultimately bought 2 suits... a "minimizing" slightly retro chlorine-resistant solid black one-piece by Maxine for my swimming and aqua aerobics class and a Popina brand retro black and white polka dot halter one-piece that was too cute to pass up even though I live in Portland and the sun only shines 2 months per year.
Thanks, Popina and staff for the most positive swimsuit buying experience of my life. I'm off to fantasize about somewhere tropical now! I need somewhere to wear the extra suit I bought! -

I'm a big girl. I accept this, so shopping for a swimsuit isnt as much of a drag for me as it is for all those skinny bitches feigning horror at their nonexistent flab. But you know what? Just because I have big boobs and wide hips doesnt mean I will resign myself to wearing a freaking swimtent! It does however require some creativity on my part...
I know that I am not going to accomodate my 38 Es in any department store, so I have become quite adept at surfing the net for my needs. But buying and returning multiple items can get a bit wearysome. So this time I decided to go custom. My Google search led me to Popina. As luck would have it, in addition to their web storefront, they have not one but two stores in PDX! I called ahead to the east Portland store, and was thrilled to hear that their line accomodated up to an E cup. I didnt even need to go custom!
When I arrived I was greeted warmly and offered a cold beer. Now this is my kind of shopping experience! what a fun place; saucy decor and an amazing pineapple chandelier, I would have stuffed into my bag if I could have... I hesitantly told the clerk my size and to my delight she guided me to several different styles that she said would work best with my figure. Off to the dressing room I trotted with six different tops and as many different bottoms. I slipped my beer into the convenient wall mounted coozie, and got nekkid.
I started with the bottoms. Thinking more coverage is better, I started with the high waisted fold-over boy short bottom. I discovered that covering a big ass in a loud sixites print really isnt that flattering. So I opted next for the retro bikini drawcord hipster in navy. Less is more, I guess. It made my butt look two sizes smaller. Fascinating! Sold!
When it comes to tops, I normally need to go with a v neck and if possible, underwire. Unfortunatley, I fell in love at first with their retro keyhole tankini. I had the same swimsuit in third grade. I held my breath and to my delight it not only fit, but fit well. The built in bra supported well, and didn't lift up out of the back of the suit. It looked super-cute with the bottoms. Another sale! This was too easy. Suit found in 15 minutes. I hadnt even finished my beer.
Now if its that easy for me to find a flattering suit, think how easy it must be for everyone else. TIn addition to the Popina line, they carry other popular, well made brands in sizes from 0 to 18. They even have a bin of samples and mix & match items for $5 each. I will come back again and again.
Thank you Popina! -

I had a coupon for this place, and boy am I glad to have found it! I got a really cute retro looking swimsuit. They tailored it to fit me and made it a good experience instead of a terrifying/depressing one! Go Popina!

If you are like most people, shopping for a bathing suit is depressing. You come face to face with the fact that your gym membership is going to waste as you try to slip into tight little bathing suits under the super BRIGHT lights of the dressing room. I barely recognized the body standing in front of me. Popina's helped make this process easier by guiding me to the styles that would work best for my figure and their selection of vintage inspired, modest suits helped me feel better about my thighs!! I love this place.

After years of wearing my perfect suit from Poppi Swim (now Popina Swimwear) I feel it is time to write my review. As I mentioned I purchased my bathing suit some time ago, three years to be exact, and I still love it! In fact every time I wear it I love it more.
The suit is a very retro halter top one piece in coral pink. A custom order made to fit my small top and larger hips, and double lined for those cold Oregon beach days. The material used is of a very high quality. The color is the same as the first day I bought it. And even though I have sat on the side of many pools there isn't any pilling on the bottom or snags that I have been able to see.
I really do not know why any woman would buy a suit anywhere else. Even if Popina does not have it in stock they will make it for you! No kidding! I will be buying my suits here as long as they are in business.Listed in: I am a cheapskate...

I can't believe it has taken me this long to review this AMAZING store! I first went to Popina per my mom's suggestion about a year ago. It is right near where I live in NE Portland and I had heard it was just a great local store.
The gals who work at the shop are super helpful without being pushy (obviously a big pet peeve of mine). The best part is, Popina makes a lot of their own swimsuits and they are so cute, comfortable and mine has worn great. Recently, having lost a little bit of weight, I even took a swimsuit to be re-altered to fit and they were more than happy to help. -

I am the petite yet busy friend referenced in Maria's review. Poppi Swim and Sport is the only store that has ever made buying a bathing suit a positive experience for me. I am in love with my bikini and want a few more.
I wish Poppi's had a few more employees. They provide such great and in depth customer service that the wait for help can be a long one. -

Poppi Swim is a lovely little swim and beach wear boutique that makes buying a suit fun again. If you are like 75% of other women and are a different size on top than you are on bottom, this is truly the place to go. I bought a retro-tankini thing there with cute little boy-leg shorts, and they altered the top to fit me for the whopping sum of $5. While I was trying on a few things, they also entertained the small child as she rolled around on the shag carpet like a loon and emptied the contents of the candy dish. Check out their website for a sampling of the retro-inspired wear. It's like dress-up for big people: you can pretend you're an extra in Gidget Goes Hawaiian or like an old-time Coney Island diving girl. One star knocked off just because I wanted even MORE options.

Love. Love. Love. I love the vintage style bathing suits from Popina. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The best part is that they have so many different styles and cuts of suits, so regardless of your body type you are going to find something you look beautiful and feel comfortable in. They have several dressing rooms for you to try your future bathing suit on in, just to make sure you have the right size and color before you buy. I also picked up my new favorite pair of shades from Popina's. So girls go get your retro summer fab on!

I so wish I would have allowed the knowledge of the the wiser Yeeps to dance into my brain before I went on the painstaking search for the perfect swim suit for my Cancun vacacion! However, I absent mindedly hurled myself somewhat mainstream & found a couple cute suits at elsewhere. One of the tops was, well, the fit was "off". I tried it on, & of course it fit me perfectly everywhere, except the chest. You could say, I'm not completely unfortunate, but the girls are not busting to get out of my shirts either. Ok, bra size talk aside, I am directed to Popina by another business I had called to see about getting the top altered. I spoke with Pamela, who is so so so so so nice! She had me bring it right in, had it ready for me in a couple days, it fits perfectly everywhere now, & she only charged me $10!
She has a gaggle of great suits in the store. All shapes, sizes, & styles. She's also got some great must have beach wear!
She's got me gettin' my beach on in style!! -

Poppi Swim and Sport has cute bathing suits in retro-inspired designs. You can mix and match colors/patterns, in modern fabrics. The staff makes the oft-miserable experience of fitting a suit fun. You can custom size a suit for an additional $35 added to the already-reasonable suit prices (ab $72 for a one-piece, and $26-42 per piece for a two-piece). The custom fit feature is great for someone with an extra-long torso like me, or with a petite frame and large bust, like my friend who has also bought a suit there. I think their business could be improved by: another dressing room, more stock in the store, and more fabric choices, especially cotton-blends. Visit this place, or their web site -- I think you'll love it.

After having twins, I loathe shopping for swimsuits. Popina was a godsend. Not only was the saleslady extremely helpful and easy-going, but the suits are fabulous. Their bottoms for their tankinis fit like no other swimsuit bottom I've ever had. They have an amazing selection and can easily accommodate any shape, size, style.
They went above and beyond the call of duty when they tracked down a replacement strap to a Jantzen suit that I hadn't even purchased through them and sent it to me for FREE!! Thanks Popina. -
