Popei's is the reason that I miss Long Island. This is hands down my favorite restaurant. I've been coming here for all you can eat crab leg nights since before I was even strong enough to use a cracker. The place is not exactly fancy, but endearing in it's own crab shack from the 80's way. The service is friendly but make sure you get there early...this place can get packed!

The portions are huge, and the prices for the amount of food you get are pretty unbelievable. I always start with the steamed combo (steamers, mussels and little neck clams) and follow it up with the snow crab legs. Long Island chowder (blend of Manhattan and New England) and crab fra diavolo are standouts as well. Just typing this is making me want to hop on a bus back to LI to make it to Popei's by dinner time.

First time there and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the bisque to start. A little disappointed needed salt and needed more seafood in it. Main course made up for it. Went for the two pound stuffed lobster special. Incredible!  Up there with some lobster dinners I've had in Maine. Service was excellent. Only thing that put a damper on our experience was the trash sitting next to us but I won't get into that. Would definitely recommend.

Second trip there, food, service atmosphere excellent all around

    Good food with decent prices.

    What we sampled:
Came here for the all you can eat crabs legs.  The legs were good and plentiful, though the side of pasta looked a bit sad.

The service was decent, and we were given time to eat and enjoy and we never felt like they didn't want us ordering more or to leave.

I would definitely return for the crabs legs and hopefully will sample more of their food next time.

Excellent food, low prices...can't ask for more than that.

Went here last night with my girlfriend. I made a reservation because I heard this place is always packed. We arrived for our 7:30 reservation and it actually had plenty of seating (not dead by any means, but definitely didn't need a reservation).

For food, I ordered a seafood bisque and thai calamari to start and had the cajun shrimp on a bed of spinach, bacon, and feta for dinner with a side salad.

Oh man. First, the seafood bisque. Not the best I've had, but definitely up there. Extremely delicious.  The thai calamari was extremely good. Not for people who don't like their calamari on the spicy side, but very good. The cajun shrimp dish was probably the best part though. Spinach, bacon, and feta together just happen to be my favorite thing so I already knew I was going to love it. The shrimp were huge and had a lot of flavor. They give you a LOT of bacon and the spinach tasted great too.

The table also gets garlic bread which, while standard, was delicious too. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive and did a good to make sure our courses came out at the appropriate time. Also, the owner was visiting everyone's tables and wanted to make sure everyone was enjoying their meal. My girlfriend lover her "all you can eat fried clams" too (although she still thinks Bigelow's in RVC is better).

Pricing..very reasonable. For a cajun shrimp entree, all you can eat fried clams, thai calamari, and 2 seafood bisque soups the whole order came out to about $62.

Oh and also..people described this place as if it were "a dive". Not fancy by any means, but it isn't a dump (I honestly was expecting it to be like a random seafood shack you see on the beach based on how people described it)

GREAT FOOD..... LOUSY ATMOSPHERE.  This place is located in a run down plaza next to a carvel. I was really expecting much more of a charming atmosphere. Inside  the music was obnoxious and BLARING. Our server was ditzy and not professional. When we told her our salad was inedible(slathered with a full cup of dressing) she giggled and walked away. The seafood is very good quality and tasty, but way overpriced. VERY EXPENSIVE!!!  Bottom line....the restaurant is poorly decorated, overpriced & service is not up to par. Sadly, I would not recommend.

Decor, it has a place for me to sit and eat. As long as it's clean I can deal with it.

It's true, the wait can get crazy so get there early even with a reservation.

Wait staff, always friendly (even when you know they have been busting their humps all night) and very efficient.

Food, nom nom nom. I look at this place as an all you can eat seafood joint that doesn't leave me looking for bottle returns for gas money. The food is good! My fav is the bucket of mussels in garlic sauce. OMG!  I order the "appetizer" portion, which is basically my main course. Calamari is perfectly crisped, I've had the original and the Thai version and like both. They should do a mix platter!

    Bring your bib !!!

OK - I've been coming here for years and only now I'm just getting around to write my review.

The main attraction for most people including myself  is the All-you-can-eat crab leg specials (Tues & Wed but call ahead).   I've had other dishes here and they have all been excellent as well, but I go for the crabs (ha ha).

This is a great spot for meeting up with friends and taking down a few bowls of steaming hot crabby goodness.     It isn't as fancy as a Red Lobster might be (if you call that fancy), but the food is the reason you come here.    This is probably one of the best seafood places anywhere on LI and I've been to a lot of them.

Make a reservation on nights when they have the specials and get there early - it gets crowded.

Overall, one of my favorite places.   I don't ever turn down an invite and I live over an hour away.   That says it all.

I was visiting New York while I was on a business trip and luckily stumbled upon this hidden gold mine!  If you're looking for a reasonable priced seafood joint this is definitely for you.

    1) Customer service - not bad
    2) Pricing - reasonable, they have an amazing special for all-you-can-eat on certain days!
    3) Taste - Food flavor was a bit bland but overall pretty good.

The portions are HUGE and overall you get what you pay for.  I would definitely go back.  I recommend the Seafood Trio!

The food was good. The service is very good. The portions are very good as well. It's a little pricey but I would go back.

I had to knock down a star on the rating because of last night. I called to have a 7:30 reservation but was told it wasn't available so I got 8:00. When arriving the place was a zoo. I was glad I had reservations but I was very disappointed because it means nothing. We did not sit down until 9:00. We had 4 young kids that was starving. Unfortunately the hostess is out of her league. Walk in customers were leaving after waiting for 45 mins after being told it was a 20 min wait. The hostess who is very nice should be telling customer the wait is an hour so they can decide to leave or wait.

I have decided that eating here on a Fri or Sat night is out of the question even with reservations. You either have to get there at 5:30 or 10:00 to get a quick table. The bigger the group (more than 4 people) the longer the wait.

the next time on a Fri or Sat, I will be getting take out.

I suggest going at lunch time. The price are less but the quantity is still very good.

The owner pops his head to ask how everything is going and the service is very good.

    I'm still a fan.

I really enjoyed this place.  It is bare bones as far as decor and location but it is very good at what it is, a neighborhood seafood joint with no pretentiousness and really good sea food.

The prices are unbeatable the portions are huge and the seafood is good.  It is not the best seafood I ever had but it is one of the best priced darn good seafood I have ever had (especially on long island!)

The bartender was quite impressive because he knew how to make a darn good cosmopolitan which is hard to come by in much fancier restaurants and the waitress was very sweet and quick.

I will most certainly be coming back soon.

Came here as a group of 4, one of them being my friend who swears by this place. Lucky for me the night as a whole was great because of the company but as far as the food is concerned it was just okay.

This place is a hole in the wall and i'm all for a good hole in the wall joint because well it has to be damn good for its doors to stay open! Unfortunately with this place other than the really friendly staff and cheap prices I really don't see what these other people see in this place. I don't know if its because I have such high expectations for hole in the wall joints or its because these other people have lowered their own standards to accept this place because of how cheap it is. Whatever the case I think this place is slightly above mediocre at best!

First time here, I will be back many times to come.

Initially, garlic bread was placed on the table. It was great. We ordered the bucket of mussels-$12. These fat, juicy mussels come in  their opened shells in a very large bowl ( not a bucket), about 50 of them, swimming in a tomato sauce( or your choice white sauce). This sauce was one of the best tomato sauces Ive ever had.  The garlic bread came to good use. The sauce was thick with lots of flavor.  I would come back just for this mussel dish. Yes, we were now very full, but...

We also had the shrimp rolled in a flounder, topped with a white sauce.
Very good. 2 large pieces-$12. The menu is full of seafood choices.

They also have all you can eat Alaska crab legs $29, and other all you can eat specials on different days. There are good beers on tap. This place is Long Island at its best.

    Parking in front, local decor.

One of my two favorite sea food restaurants on Long Island (the other being South Side in Lindenhurst).  You can't beat the prices, or the quality/quantity of food at Popei's.  You can go to fancier restaurants, you can pay a LOT more money, but the food won't be nearly as good.

My favorite nights are Mondays (for the New England Clam Bake special) and Wednesdays (for the "Anything Goes" special).  Tonight's occasion was my mother's birthday. The "All You Can Eat" special was ribs but... why would you go to a seafood restaurant for ribs?  Sadly, the ribs will go "unreviewed" tonight.

We started with the bucket of steamers for an appetizer.  I had the "Popei's Special" which was a big heaping bowl of linguine topped with mussels, clams, scallops, shrimps, snow crab legs, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and mushrooms in a garlic/oil sauce.  I was unable to finish my portion (and people who know me knows how unusual THAT is).

Mom had the twin lobster tails, my brother had the clam bake dinner. My niece had a dish similar to mine, but without the vegetables and in a fra diavolo sauce.  None of us were in the mood for dessert afterward.

If you love seafood, and don't care about paying extra for fancy ambiance, the definitely check out Popei's.

Our last chance at local Long Island seafood this year before heading back to the midwest, went with the family to Popei's based on Yelp data.  While the repeated mantra 'huge portions' was a cause for subliminal concern, the reviews here are accurate:  the food is outstanding (and the portions are indeed huge)!

I started with the Manhattan clam chowder - a cup, which was the size of a large bowl anywhere else.  Loads of clams (some a bit tough) and fresh vegetables, zippy tomato base.  As good as The Fishery in East Rockaway.

For my main course I chose the clams-on-the-halfshell (raw).  It has been years... no, decades... since I've had such delicious and fresh-tasting clams.  Cold, clean, perfect.  I mixed Little Neck, Cherrystone, and Top Neck, and each type was just superb.

Another person had the steamed mussels (white wine and garlic) that was also outstanding.  Not a speck of sand or grit to spoil the excellent flavor.

The owner/chef came out and did the rounds of the dining room.  We asked where he got the clams (Long Island, North Shore - I didn't know that the clam beds were back in business but this is terrific news).  The mussels are farm-raised from PEI - grown on lines so they never come into contact with the ocean floor.  You live, you learn.

Service was informed, helpful, and attentive.  My only complaint is the garlic bread - a bit soggy and not too flavorful.  Just as well - left more room for the meal!

I am surprised i forgot to review this restaurant. My friends took me here a couple of months ago for supper. They have this late night menu ( friday/saturday night special 10-12 pm) which is soo good and cheap.

My friends got 3 dozens of clams on half shells, while i got baked clams, wings, fried shrimps, garlic bread, crab leg cluster, thai calamari.. pretty much everything on their special menu. I would say i loooooove the baked clams and thai calamari. Yum. Must try!!!!

I am going back there tomorrow, and would definitely try out more dishes on their menu.

Came here on a Sunday night around 8pm and the place was packed.  Very good sign.  As for the crowd - it was mainly families having a Sunday night feast.  The menu is a little overwhelming, in a cheesecake factory type of way.  I kept it simple - ordering the snow crab dinner - at $21 - there must have been 2 dozen crab legs on my plate and it came with a side - I went with the baked potato.  There was excellent value here.

My wife had shrimp and lobster over linguine - she must have ordered the smallest thing on the menu.  Everyone else's plates were overflowing with food and hers was just on the large side.  It was plenty of food - a few jumbo shrimp and some pieces of lobster over a garlic and butter sauce.  It's hard to mess this stuff up and it didn't disappoint.

The restaurant is rather pricey - for the 2 of us with tip the bill was about $60 (no alcohol).  You do get a lot of food but it's not exactly a fine dining establishment.

Drove there last night from Brooklyn after reading various reviews from YELP and having a serious hankering for all things clams, raw, steamed, baked & fried..chowders.  Boy was i impressed!  Fresh seafood of any variety to be had with flavorful sauces..lots of garlic & some pleasant surprises along the way.  Our server "Dawn" was also very pleasant and ultra knowledgeable about the seafood and history of the restuarant.
To say the least it was all awesome, including the desserts.
I will be back, even if that means traveling the belt parkway in Bumper to bumper traffic for an hour and a half.  It was that good.  beat anything you can get in the city, sheepshead bay or Bklyn.  I dont know another place like it.  Fantastic prices on it all too.  Lobsters dirt cheap.

Popei's clam bar is to be found in a strip mall mid island. Tables are clean and the wait staff are friendly.  There is a bar in the front room and a wide screen flat panel TV on the wall in the back room. Decor is common, and the rooms are loud with conversations.

The bread is a tasty combination of warm baguette with a light coating of prepared tomato sauce.  We ordered the Manhattan Clam Chowder in cups, per an earlier review that we read prior to visiting this restaurant. I do not agree that the portion size was equivalent to a bowl elsewhere, nor will I say that the soup was "full" of clams; however, I will say that the cup of soup was fairly sized and reasonably tasty.

The show stopper for me was the portion, Popei's Special.  This portion was enormous, easily large enough to feed two or three people.  Mussels, shrimp, calamari, cherry stone clams and Alaskan King Crab Legs all in a broth spiced with garlic and onions and served on a bed of linguini.

Wine was somewhat pricey and really not necessary.  Had we not had wine and had we shared the Popei's special we could have enjoyed our meal for less than 90% of the restaurants that we frequent.

Popei's clam bar is worth it. Visit and enjoy!

    Seafood for the masses.

Popei's has been around for some ungodly amount of time - like 25 years.  I have been driving past this place for almost all of those years but never ventured in because A: it looked seedy from the outside and B: the parking lot was always jammed.

Since we were in the seafood mood and nothing is my immediate area is worth a damn other than for scenery, I decided to give it a whirl and see what the huge crowds were all about.

After doing some serious maneuvering with the car I got it parked and walked into sheer bedlam - the lady at the front door looks like she can handle a riot at Attica and still do her nails- she is one cool cucumber!

She got us seated and hit us with the ginormous menus that basically overwhelm you with choices- you see something that looks good and 5 lines later you see something altogether different and more interesting and on it goes.

Being that it was also all-you-can-eat crab legs night, the servers were constantly passing with big bowls of steaming snow crab legs- I was about to go on overload but resisted the crab legs as I really wasn't that hungry to begin with.

We ordered up and had our drinks while we waited and watched the diners around us scarf down fish like they were starving pelicans...

The server was great- he dropped some of the most gooey garlic bread on the table which we tried not to eat as I was saving the calories for the main course.

Let me tell you, the portions can easily feed 3-4 normal humans and maybe 2 big fatties - unbelievable.

The actual food fine - it seemed a little bland to me but I want to give it another go-round before I take a star off.

Prices were real good- good value for the amount of food they drop in front of you.  On the other hand, looking at the size of the majority of the patrons, the giant servings might not be the best thing on earth...

We paid and left and apparently there is a valet guy out there but we didn't see him when we pulled up.  There was a crowd of people waiting in the lot to get in - what a gold mine!  Now if they only cleaned up the location...

Great place for seafood at reasonable prices.  They have a late night weekend menu which puts lobster, stuffed shrimp, ribs and other favorites at half price; all you can eat ribs, shrimp, and crab wednesdays for like $20.  Other than the specials the menu is pretty moderately priced and you will always be pleased with the quality of the food.

Break out those stretchy pants and leave the belt at home! This isn't some snotty upscale place with 4 different forks and knives and spoons. This is a great seafood place that has awesome all you can eat nights, just pick the right now to show up on! And great late night specials. Late night on friday and saturday nights, you can order off their menu. I usually go for the raw clams, at 55 cents a piece why not? Their seafood is pretty fresh and the staff really knows what they're doing. They know about seafood, and they're damn nice too!

Their stuff comes in those big metal bows that you usually mix stuff in. Its awesome, damn its about volume here it seems. But they have good seafood, don't think that cause they give you a lot the stuff isn't good. it is! I'm there for late night seafood!

They say eating so much raw shellfish is bad for you. high mercury content and all. I ain't preggers so I'm gonna eat all the seafood creatures i want!

Park in the back or on the side. And the sign they have up when they say the place next door will tow your car, they mean it! They usually have valet on the weekends, so be nice to the guy.

Don't load up on the garlic bread now, save room for the sea creatures, the oh so tasty sea creatures. Vegetarians stay home!

I've been coming to Popei's for at least the last 15 years and I can personally vouch for the place. It's the best seafood restaurant I have ever dined at and I've dined at plenty of seafood restaurants! Probably my favorite thing about the place, besides the quality of the food, is how little it's decor has changed. It's nice coming into an old familiar spot, where it seems like everyone knows my name.

The waitstaff is attentive, the bus boys remember you, and the owner is always quick with a smile when he asks if you're enjoying your meal.

Oh, and Late Night @ Popei's.. well that's just icing on the cake. :)

This place is awesome!  Not only  the food is always great, but service is excellent as well.  Price is the best around the area considering they really give you huge portions.  We've been there 5 times now and has not been disappointed yet.

My husband and I went here tonight and were thoroughly disappointed. Although the service was great, what was served was definitely not! The dishes had too much garlic, as if the chef didn't know what else to put in the food to give it flavor. Everything tasted the same; the broiled flounder, the bay scallops, the linguini with clam sauce. The same garlic flavor. The steamers did not seem fresh. I did enjoy the seafood bisque and the garlic bread...although the garlic bread probably had the same garlic sauce as everything else. The portions were large but who cares. We will not return.

I have been back for the 5th time, and I am still impressed by the food and the service.  If you are a Zagats freak worrying about decor then just come here anyway, the seafood dishes are excellent.  Had the Clambake on Monday night, and was treated like family by the staff, and the amount of food you get is unbelievable for the money.  Lobster is generous in size, and you get like 2 pounds of other shellfish to go with it.  Some of it being King Crab legs.  It is probably the least stuffiest place I have been to while leaving like I was served by friends.  You will never have to worry about needing another drink or having a plate cleared at Popei's!

The muscles are great and the soup are awesome. Doesn't beat peters clam bar. But they have best prices for what u want.  Parking sucks unless u pay for valet or get there early.

We came to Popei's tonight for dinner rather than for our usual Sunday lunch. This restaurant just keeps getting better over time. The special tonight was "All You Can Eat Ribs" for $19.99, but we decided on the Seafood instead. We also looked over at the guy sitting at the table behind us who did order the Ribs and it's like he couldn't shove them into his mouth fast enough!! Watching this huge man eat kind of made the decision an easy one!!

You get a choice of Salad, Pasta, Baked Potato, Rice or Veggies with each entree. You also get that delicious basket of Garlic Bread that will kill your dinner once you start eating it. Once you start, you cannot stop!! The last time we were here, my husband ordered the Fried Combo Platter, it was just slightly greasy. Tonight, it was perfect!! The combo included a big piece of Fish Fillet, Fried Shrimp, Scallops, Calamari, Stuffed Shrimp, Stuffed Mushroom and a Baked Clam. The amount of food on his plate was unbelievable, definitely enough for two people. The Cocktail Sauce and Tartar Sauce they give you are all homemade. He was really in the mood for Lobster and was ready to order what they called the "Expecting Lobster" (stuffed with a colossal lump of Crab meat and Shrimp), but he made a big mistake by telling my children that it was really a Lobster that was pregnant and they believed him. My older daughter actually got very upset over it so there went his Lobster!! (and I can honestly say he so deserved it!!) I ordered my usual Broiled Fillet of Sole and it was delicious. My children had the Baked Ravioli (the sauce was actually really good) and the Fried Shrimp.

Whether you go for lunch or dinner, you will always have a great meal here, and lot's of it. I don't know if Popei's was voted #1 Seafood Restaurant again in 2008, but as far as I'm concerned, they definitely are!!

Going on a trip to Ocean City and not having an chance to grab some seafood left me with an insatiable craving for crab and lobster.  After making the hankerin known to some friends, person after person recommended Popei's.  When I arrived I was a little taken back by the lack of decor (it shares a parking lot with a gas station) but once inside I quickly found out what all the hype was about.  The service was excellent.  The menu was simple and contained everything you could possible want at a seafood restaurant.  The food was fresh and perfectly served.  I cant wait for my next visit!!!
