2 reviews for Pompei Pizza
You want classic "NY Style" pizza? Thin crust, not too much sauce, perfect gooey, awesome cheese? This is it. This is my go to pizzeria. I used to be able to go here with a dollar and get change back when I bought a slice. Those days are long gone, but the pizza's that good that it doesn't matter.
I still live nearby and it will always smell and taste the same as it did when I was a kid.
I remember I went inside to get a slice when I was with some cousins from out of town. None of them were hungry so I only bought one for me. I came out and they all took a bite. They were all so amazed at how good it was, they went back and bought their own. It doesn't get any better than that!
When we were kids, we would take our bikes and pedal down Broadway and, if by some miracle had any money, we'd buy a slice at Pompei's. They do not deliver, so eat-in/ take-out are your only options. This was probably why it was such a novelty, because in Bayonne, every other pizza joint delivered. This business had such good walk-up sales due to its central location on Broadway that I guess they never bothered chasing down customers. Recently I went back, and it's the same terrific pizza from twenty-five years ago. Crust is on the thin side but not too thin, the cheese comes out gooey like it should, and the sauce is tangy enough to be dippable. Worth the walk.
