While I've never visited the actual restaurant, this is where a lot of our vendors at my place of employment prefer to buy us lunch, and it's always a crowd pleaser. I love the chicken ravioli in the creamy vodka tomato sauce, definitely try!
However, my favorite item of all is the chocolate cake! It's perfectly moist, and I'm not a frosting or a sweet-food person but it is absolutely the pinnacle of chocolate heaven. Try it, and you will not be disappointed. -
Review from Darren F.
every time i come here, the service is just decent. sometimes they would be nice but sometimes they are a little rude when you ask a few questions. its a nice looking place to dine in with a few friends tho.
i usually order the pizza strudels or slice pizza here.. the pizza strudels are great! there was a few times when i order it , there wasn't enough stuffing's inside tho. i haven't come across a bad tasting pizza strudel from Pompei.. all taste good! the slice pizza is just alright, nothing really special and taste like your normal average pizza from like ricobenes.
i ordered a chicken vesuvio one time because i think it was that day's special and i didn't really enjoy it.. the chicken was kind of dry and i didn't really like the sauce on it. however, the potatoes was pretty good.
pompei is a bit pricey for what it is but i enjoy the atmosphere here with company and will come back for the wonderful pizza strudels! -

I find myself coming here a lot lately. They have decent Italian food. It is a quick meal and the price cannot be beat.
Here is a list of dishes I have tried:
The cavetelli in vodka cream sauce I thought was great. This is not on the regular menu but a special. My husband thought the tomato cream sauce in the herb chicken ravioli was better but this was my favorite.
The herb chicken ravioli with tomato cream sauce. I thought the sauce was good. I thought the ravioli was "ok" but could use something besides chicken filling. It seemed a little dry.
The pizza was a tasty surprise. I tried the spinach and tomato pizza. Beware the pizza is loaded with spinach. I actually liked it this way but some might not enjoy as much spinach on their pizza. They have tons of choices and I am looking forward to trying more combinations.
House salad was disappointing. The salad I received had no veggies. It was all lettuce. I like the idea of ordering pizza and salad and may try a different salad next time. I am hoping this was just bad luck. Love the fact they they have small and large salad options.
One more note there is 15 minute parking in front and parking in the back. On busy Taylor street is a real perk. -

Chicago, IL
Too pricey and no gluten free pasta (are you kidding?) Not for gluten free vegetarians - they told me lettuce and sausage with peppers are the only gluten free items on the ENTIRE menu. The only location on Taylor to not offer this! Salads use iceberg - not the best quality lettuce. They do such a high volume, there is little concern over what regular customers request. The team didn't seem to care that I had a suggestion. Won't be a regular there any more.

I love Pompei Taylor Street.
This location is not like the other Pompeii around Chicago. The Taylor St. location owners only own this one and one in the suburbs. I have eaten at Pompei on Taylor street many times and found the food exceptional. I have never had a bad pizza which is easy but have never had bad pasta, salad, sandwich, eggplant, meatballs, etc. It's casual, you order at a counter and they bring the food to you. It's good food, high quality, not salty or sweet. Price is good, service is fast and friendly. Tables out doors for al fresco. You will not be disappointed in this location especially if you have eaten at another Pompei and found it lacking. This one is different, much better. -

An ok slice of pizza and some adequate gelato can be procured at Pompei. That being said, it's a bit overpriced and overrated for an order-at-the-counter place. Nothing too impressive.

I've only discovered this location in the last couple of years and have never had a bad meal there.
Generally I'll get their sqaure pizza slices and on Sunday I had a sausage, mushroom, and onion slice (very good)...their minestrone is also very good and filling.
Desserts here like most Italian eateries I've been to are delish as well...their gelato is very good and their cannoli are great as well.
This is my go-to place when I am in the downtown area....its on the level of a Panera Bread (fast casual) yet not the fancy restaurant that Little Italy is famous for...oh yea the noise levelhas not been bad in there at all the times I've gone (generally in the evenings after 6). -

im def a fan!
its just that the pizza just does not come out right. sometimes they are on it! and other times they fail.
i do like to order the chicken mushroom and mostaccioli. that never fails!
its always busy and even though its large, its hard to find a seat. -

Chicago, IL
Pompei is a nice Italian eatery with consistently good food! Their gnocchi was delicious, but I had a problem with the shape of the pasta. In Italy, Gnocchi are small dumplings, not shaped like cylinders like at Pompeii. Either way, the pasta was good, and after a while, I had no issues with its shape. The bruschetta is very tasty and tomato rich!
Their paninis are also good, and their baked minestrone soup was very flavorful. I recommend this place as a good lunch spot or a casual dinner spot. You'll have good food at good prices.
Oh yea, I can't forget the cannolis! Those chocolate covered cannolis are DELICIOUS! -

Had dinner at Pompei tonight for the first time.
Of course I just had to do this during the Taylor Street
Italian Fest where there were too many people(Hello
crowd control!).
Now, I am not dissing Pompei in any way, it actually
was a pretty nice dining experience.
A little confusing, there is a very l-o-n-g cafeteria type counter
where there are lotsa people working or so it seems...
Lotsa stations with all sorts of foods, pizza, pasta, calzones,
stromboli's, some salads, a very nice looking chocolate cake
nice visuals going on here, my eyes liked this!
So, I ordered one piece of pizza which was one of the best
I have ever had, nice thin crust, perfect amount of sausage
and cheese, I was liking pompei more and more!
This restaurant is pretty big inside but because of the festival
going on there was no where left to sit inside so finally found
seats out on the patio.
I was liking it out on the patio until the server started rushing us off the patio because there were other people waiting for tables!
I mean, get real, let me at least finish my chocolate cake!
I paid for it and I want it! It's mine!
So, I finished my chocolate cake and gave up my table to the
next pompei customer cause I am nice like that!
Okay, so I liked pompei and I definitely would return again..
Next time I will go on a nice, quiet relaxing day!
Tonight was a little too frantic, even for me..:( -
Review from Alison V.
Consistently good pizza. I used to frequent this location (and the original smaller Pompei Bakery on Taylor that this large building replaced) a few times per week. I like this location much better than the Oakbrook Terrace location, which is much closer to me now.
My favorites are the eggplant pizza and the pizza Pompei. The eggplant pizza has changed over the years from being grilled to being breaded and fried. The pizza Pompei is a vegetarian pizza without cheese; the topping is a wonderfully delicious mash of crushed tomatoess, sliced olives and breadcrumbs.
Slices are about a 5" x 5" square and are reasonably priced around $3 - $3.75 per slice. I think one slice is adequate for a meal, but I have seen people eat as many as three at a time.
Everything else on the menu is also very good. They make their own pasta, it is very light and cooked well. They also have a squid salad that is not always on the menu. If they have it as a special, I would recommend trying it. -

I came here for lunch with my girlfriend the other day. The guy taking our order was rude when asked what was in the salad: 'Everything's on the menu over there!' was his response.
Another guy behind the counter pointed to the register and said 'You pay over there!' Okay, okay, I'm not trying to get a free meal.
The bread on the meatball sandwich was dry and stale; the meatballs lacked flavor, and the salad was over-dressed. The food gets a 2.5/5 stars, but the service was 0/5.
You should definitely come here for lunch or dinner if you want to be served by thugs. -

I have got food from this place multiple times. Oh maybe I should say too many times. I have recommended this place to my friends. But those will never happen again.
Busboy messed up my order. Cashier messed up accordingly but tried to blame on me. Manager (or whatever) came over and gave me 'you owe me fucking money attitude'.
Sure, I know cops stop by your restaurant everyday. I know you have decent turnover every night. But that does not justify the attitude at all. Don't forget, your food is just OK.
Therefore, FUCK. THIS. PLACE. -

Used to live three doors down from Pompei when it was on Loomis and Taylor. People would line up down the street in order to get their pizza for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised that their pizza was still the same.Had the low cal salad which was very good as well. Brings back some good memories of living in the neigborhood with my sister and friend during our college days. Live in Orland Park area now and have gone to the new one that opened a few months ago. Had a wonderful experience and can't wait to go again!

We had been here once before several years ago and loved it, so were were glad we had a chance to visit again to see if anything had changed...
This is a fun place to eat! It is in the Chicago college district and is a beehive of activity. This is a big open restaurant. We you walk in you are kind of overwhelmed by the size of the place, the great smells, and the buzz of the crowd. We came here for a Saturday dinner with another couple. You order at the long counter that stretches in front of the kitchen and your food is delivered to your table. There are so many great looking and smelling things here it is tough to decide. Sandwiches, salads, soups, pizza, house made pasta and desserts! We ordered the minestrone soup and their special of the day -- butternut squash ravioli with a butter-brown sugar sauce. The soup was thick, rich and delicious! The ravioli was "al dente" and wonderful! For dessert we had their gelato spumoni! A great meal at a reasonable price! We can see why this place it always busy!
This place was just as we remembered it...Great food and great prices in a fun environment! -

Pompei on Taylor street is the best. We are regular customers, at least once a week and are treated like family everytime we are there! My children have been eating the food since they were just little tots. We love Pompei! Very family friendly! Food is delicious....ALL of it!!!

Review from Molly O.
For some reason my office insists on Pompei whenever there is an office lunch outing or all staff meeting. Aside from being able to accommodate large parties in their back dining area and being uber nice on the phone, there's not much else that great about this place.
- The pizza is fine, but it reminds me of frozen pizza. The best, by far, is the all veggie pizza.
- The house salad is a big ball of iceberg lettuce and is always overdressed.
- It's cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Me don't like Pompei. -

I've never actually been inside but have ordered quite a few times for lunch at work...I like the fact that they advise you how long delivery takes..over 1hr..so we always order ahead of time...the eggplant sandwich is so delicious...I also love love their chicken ceasar salad...I might just have to go and check out the place instead of just ordering out ;)

This place is so close to work and delivers! For the past two years, I have been brown bagging my lunch to work since paying for grad school. Since that's over in seven weeks, my budget had opened up again and I ordered out from here not too long ago. My friend and I ordered at the counter and brought the food back. I forgot how difficult it is to decide when coming here! My original plan was to get minestrone soup and the Pompeii salad. Of course when I saw the stuffed artichoke special, I had to get it. It traveled really well. It was deliciousl! And very filling. I ordered a Pompeii salad as well but ended up saving that for the next days lunch.
The food is always good and consistent. Prices are on point for the counter type service. And a major bonus is that they have red cream soda! -

Pompei hosted a St. Jude's of Memphis dinner the night before the 2011 Chicago marathon. They had amazing food and great service. Location was perfect. Spacious, with lots of tables a different spaces. We had the Brushetta inside the restarant and then had great salad and roasted chicken with pasta in some kind of light olive oil spinach sauce. Delish!!!

Great food if you are in a hurry and need a fix for some tasty Italian food! We were visiting the Little Italy area with some out of town friends and they decided they wanted to go to lunch here. Being as it was almost 3pm, there were very few people in the place, which to me was a big plus. Cavernous, to say the least, I would hate to see what the noise levels are when they are busy. Service was prompt, friendly and unobtrusive, even if we were standing in a line like a cafeteria. We received our food within 10 minutes and were soon eating some pretty great tasting food. Sauce was light and not too garlicky, the meats were very fresh, and the bread, tasty. All in all an enjoyable lunch, however, still I enjoy the small mom and pop places we normally frequent!

I tried the chicken limone with linguini---too oily for me. I should stick with hearty healthy pizza strudel and either a small minestrone or a small side house salad.

Review from Dustin W.
Chicago, IL
I have eaten here on many occasions at different times and days of the week, by myself and with family, and Pompei pretty much stinks it up somehow someway every darn time. The food is generally ok, not great, sometimes good, depending on how long it sat cold before being reheated. Here are a few of the reasons I have decided to not come back again even though it is incredibly fast and convenient.
1. By default, all of Pompei's food is reheated. True you may get served food that was only sitting a short while during lunch hour, do not expect anything shy of sitting out hours firming up with the cheap cheese they use past 6:30PM. Why pay decent cash (not cheap food) for reheated food. This concept is only good from an ownership perspective or if you are in a huge hurry.
2. Because they do not want to have any leftovers (ie lost revenue eating out of the profits), after around 7:30, they just stop making a lot of the items. In other words, you can only order old food, nothing that would actually be made to order or in the past hour.
3. Meatball sandwich delivered 15 minutes after the rest of the groups food. It arrived with a thick cold plastic layer of "cheese" and consisted of cold sauce on top of a dried out burnt roll that was also somehow cold even though it was blackened. Clearly I just got served up someones mess up sandwich that sat for a long time then went though the little oven and was not heated though because it started cold. That was accompanied by cold focaccia bread. The one item I actually thoroughly enjoy at Pompei is the fresh baked bread, but alas this also must have been gone. Keep in mind all of this occurring 15 minutes after everyone else started eating.
4. The lasagna is pretty darn good actually, but again, picked up an order right before close and ended up really sick for about 36 hours, so I cant eat that anymore.
Im sure people have their reasons for frequentlng Pompei (ie lunch is pretty good hence the second star), but I have been burned too many times to return. -

I order delivery from here once every 4-5 months for my work. The only reason is because my president of my company sometimes craves their chicken parm strudel. But no matter what - no matter how many times I order, no matter how much food I order, no matter the cost, I ALWAYS...ALWAYS... get an attitude from one of the staff. It's like clockwork. I always know I'm going to get a tude from someone. Yes, the food is good - italian with some flair. But be forewarned - you'll always get an attitude from someone no matter what. It pisses me off every time.

Review from Hoang L.
The biggest issue with this place is their display of all the food. They have TOO much of it that it gives me the impression that it's been there for a while. In order words, the freshness is not there, regardless of whether it is or not. Perception is half the battle.
However, there are 3 things I really like about Pompei and that is...
1. It has a drive-thru. Sometimes it can get pretty slow though.
2. The building looks badass from the outside. A lot fancier than it really is inside.
3. Their pasta is affordable. I ordered a tray (no sauce) for like $10.
Would I come back? Tough call, only if I was in the area. -

I generally have a love/meh relationship with Pompeii. It is always the default choice when we end up in Little Italy during lunch time and have trouble finding parking - they have a little lot - Love it!
My old favorites - eggplant parmesan, pepper and egg, fried calamari, eggplant marlowe, (used to like the chopped chicken but its better in the downtown express location??), baked ministrone.
What's meh??? We get the above almost EVERY SINGLE TIME plus one new thing for "variety". I don't really like the pizza like products - perhaps some years ago - but the adult version of me doesn't want to eat the pizza. Their tiramisu (and other desserts) are gigantic for the price but ... ho hum.. I usually skip unless I have massive cravings. -

I have ordered from Pompeii for delivery twice. The first time I ordered, I would give it four stars. The herb roasted chicken ravioli I ordered was delicious with an awesome amount of sauce on it, and my italian chopped salad had just the right amount of toppings and dressing. My boyfriend ordered the chicken and broccoli alfredo and caesar salad. He loved the alfredo but thought the caesar dressing tasted more like a balsamic vinaigrette.
The second time, the service was still excellent. However, my salad seemed to have too much going on in the toppings department. My ravioli was also lacking a little in the sauce which left sad and dry little raviolis. My boyfriend noticed the same lack-of-sauceness on his pasta as well.
We will still probably order from them because of fast delivery, and friendly service, and I will just keep my fingers crossed for liberal sauciness on our pastas. -

I am from Chicago and know of Pompei from my dad who remembers when it started as pizza being served out of the church basement in the "old days". I went there last Sunday for lunch and had the Sausage and Ricotta Stuffed Pizza and the Chopped Chicken Salad. The portions are big, so I ended up taking half of it home. This is usually the case when I go in there. It's a great place to order a few things off of the menu and share with your meal companions. And many times I go in there to eat and end up ordering more food to take home. It's so good! I've had everything from the salads to the soups to the pizza and sandwiches and of course the Tiramasu! And I keep going back for more! And the prices are reasonable for such delicious food.

I don't like writing average reviews. But, I go to Pompei at least twice a week for lunch. It is one of the decent food options by my office, and the nearest. So before you read this review, I have to warn you... there is nothing funny or cool here, just a little useful stuff. That is what happens when you write a 3-star review. There is usually nothing funny or cool to say.
They recently introduced half sandwich and soup combos. That is what prompted me to write an update. I like the options. For $5.95 you can get 1/2 sandwich or panini and 1/2 soup of the day. Today, I had beef barley soup with a breaded steak sandwich. Pretty good. Yesterday, I had the philly cheese steak with chicken noodle soup. The soup was just OK (sorta bland, I had to dump a lot of pepper in the bowl) and the sandwich was good.
Service is fast. You are more likely to get a seat if you go before 12 or after 1pm. Lunch hour is a mad rush.
Aaaaaand... you are welcome.
P.S. Told you this is going to be boring.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Chicago, IL
The pizza here is a damn shame. Reheated sheet pizza slices (the size is about the same as a personal pizza), are dry and shockingly flavourless. I had the eggplant which should have been more aptly named "Flat-tasting Paste on bread with a 1/2 inch of Cheese on Top". Could I maybe get more than a 1/2 teaspoon of sauce too, please?
The Caprese Salad was actually quite decent, nice red-ripe tomatoes, fresh basil strips, and a lovely soft mozzarella. But holy-cannoli Batman the vinaigrette used was a garlic bomb! I love garlic but I was so self conscious after eating that. I felt like i had rolled around in 500 garlic cloves. But the good thing was that BF said his garlic bread was really strong too, so you know, if you're going to stink, at least stink together.
I liked the variety of the menu and the ease of ordering (even though the cafeteria-style layout did smack loudly of a Sbarro rip-off). Prices are pretty cheap, but this aint fine dining folks, so you are getting what you pay for.Listed in: Pizza: It's a lot like sex

I ate at Pompei today with some of my co-workers after leaving the Juvenile Justice. I was VERY hungry and usually when I am that hungry I could eat about anything cooked. I walked in the restaurant and it smelled wonderful so I was excited to try something new. Then I noticed all of this food sitting out cold. So I bacame skeptical. Hmmm....has there been any flying insects on the food I wondered. I said what the heck and I ordered a chicken fajita wrap type of gig-a-ma-jig. It was not everything I thought it would be. The sandwich was very dry. But they had creme soda!!! to wash down the sandwich. I could have settled for going to Maxwell Polish Stand. Overall it was okay. Nothing I would refer a friend to or return.

Love the concept, so I'll keep coming back.
Just a maddening experience, I spent more time getting up and down looking for parts of my order. Which drove me crazy since we sat "outside" or there covered outside.
Ordered everything at once, meal, dessert and a latte.
Meal came, check...then I asked where is the latte and lemon knot. response, I don't bring that. Well okay.
A while later, here comes the latte, okay, I ask, "lemon knot?" Response, I don't bring that.
Finally ten minutes later, latte is cold, no lemon knot. I go and fetch it.
All the while, I got up in between to ask about the stuff, yeah yeah, someone will bring it.
As for the food, did get spaghetti. Is it too hard to drain the water? Nice sauce on top, but water in the bottom of the bowl?
I hate to gripe, so I always look for something good, I did get meatballs with the order, those were good.
Maybe next time, get me a meatball sandwich to go! Hold the water.Listed in: Pizza! Pizza!!

Awesome menu.
Too busy.
Not enough seating. (well, there IS enough, but they're just too busy to find any)
They have a 30minute pickup schedule, but you can DRIVE THRU!
Try delivery in advance, or better: order catering for your office lunch.
Awesome food, and the Davino family is a Taylor Street staple. -

I really wanted to like this place. The gnocchi was o.k. The cannoli was subpar. The prices are good enough that I may be back but not with such high hopes.
** Second Visit
I took the family back to Pompei since we were looking for a place to eat where our unruly 3 year old would not bother people trying to have a nice meal. I had the escarole and bean soup which was very good. We also tried the spaghetti, 8 finger cavatelli and mama's meatballs. I have to admit I still think their food is just bland. I do not get it. It is ok, but I really have had much better food at the Olive Garden. However, my sons loved it and are already begging to go back. For that reason, I am sure I will be back and updating again. -
