Very great location. That may be biased because I live a few blocks over. But it is right off the Wellington stop.

Anyhow, the service is really good. The staff is friendly, and the food comes pretty quickly. The prices are very affordable for Italian food. It's one of my go-to places if I don't feel like cooking. I recommend the chicken fettuccine alfredo with broccoli. And the calamari.

It can get packed if it's a nice night out and it's a weekend. Overall, a good place.

We're familiar with Pompei on Taylor, so after our last visit to Illinois Masonic for care, we ate at this location.
The selections are almost the same, the prices are higher at this location.
I noticed that this location offers gardiera slices.  I tried one (not heart healthy), and it was great.

This place is like one step up from a Sbarro's. It's cheap, but a lot of their food is pre-made so it's just getting heated up for you. I had the veggie pizzacotti and it was good, but when I saw how small it was I was glad that it was less than $6 including tax.
I actually thought it was a restaurant at first, but you stand in line and order at the counter in front of the food that has been sitting there all day waiting for someone to order it so they can heat it up for you. It seems to be popular with families and there were a bunch of kids (about ages 5-6) running around on a Saturday night. Maybe because it's children friendly that would explain why the place is really dirty. The tables were filthy and I had silverware under mine.
If you aren't within walking distance of here I can't recommend that you make the effort to go out of your way.

I live right by Pompei and have frequented it many times for a quick lunch or dinner.

The food here is pretty hit or miss. For an Italian place, the pizza and pasta are subpar. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here if you are looking for good, authentic Italian food. The salads, on the other hand, are delicious. I've had the chopped salad and the vegetable salad. Their homemade vinaigrette is the perfect light dressing for these healthy salads. I need a lot of toppings on a salad to actually consider it a meal, and the vegetable salad has more than enough with potatoes, asparagus, chicken, eggs, and tomatoes. This alone would be enough, but it comes with a huge piece of bread.

If you do come here, don't skip on dessert! The brownie and chocolate cannoli are both winners!

A nice surprise.  I passed by this place countless times for the past several years and finally walked in for the first time yesterday for lunch.  I had no expectations going in and was pleasantly surprised by the handmade pasta, which was fresh, and some tasty sauces.  My husband and I ordered the spinach pesto ravioli and chicken parmesan with spaghetti, and both were very good.  Not amazing but very good for the price and again, fresh.  The Italian beef, meatball sandwich and Italian sub also looked good.  Will definitely visit again, maybe with the kids next time...looked very kid-friendly!

Good food at a good price. The pasta and ravioli are homemade and are really good. All the pizza products are good, the works is definately worth trying. Salads are very good as well. If you think this place is overpriced or expensive you are cheap.

Evaluate it for what it is... Fast food Italian. With that in mind, if you want quick pasta or pizza, go for it.  Nothing special, but decent enough.

The food is good, not out of this world--but it gets the job done. The service people, though, need to learn some customer service 101. Double charging someone and then asserting that they didn't do it, then finally getting around to looking at the receipt I've thrusted before their faces and confirming the double charge should be enough to get an apology and the issue ironed out. Wrong. Instead, I'm told to sit down while they "fix" the problem. The problem took 10 minutes to fix. How hard is it to just refund the over-charge. I didn't even get an apology. How rude.

I decided to go back one night and of course, I got the cheese ravioli again! I was pleasantly surprised how much of a difference getting the meat sauce over marianara was! It was filling, delicious and NOT runny. I finished the whole thing this time and I did order the Bruschetta again, I'm a huge fan and it's SO good.

Not too shabby. A very wide variety of tasty Italian food all delivered very quickly. They have Sprite Zero on the fountain which I appreciate. It's nice to have caffeine/calorie free beverages. The salads, pastas and pizzacottos are all ready good. Price is definitely right. Portions are gigantic. It would be nice to have an option of ordering a smaller size sometimes.

Pompei is cheap, delicious, and local.  How can you go wrong?  For $2.95 you can get a huge brick-shaped slice of pizza that will fill you up for HOURS and their soups are all phenomenal.  Everything tastes relatively homemade, which is a fete, considering how fast you get your food.  It really could be like a Pasta Bravo (if that still even exists) or something like that, but they really fill their food with heart.  I also love how they reach out into the community and they really welcome families to come in and have a nice hearty and healthy Italian meal.  It reminds me of my Italian mother at home, so I always love coming in, even though it's sort of a "quick service" joint.

Support your local chains!  Go to Pompei!

Pompei is an above average restaurant.  It doesn't do anything really well, but it does lots of things well.  No one should put their pizza on any top 10 lists.  No one should rave about their pasta.  There is nothing imaginative or striking about their salads or desserts.  But the food is pretty solid.  If you are in the are, its worth the the visit on one of those days when you just can't decide what you want.  They have everything, so you will find something.

Avoid driving there however, parking is terrible in that neighborhood.

Everything I have eaten at this place tastes like total crap.  My office unfortunately ordered their pizza every week from here for a few months until we all complained enough.

I think the only thing on their menu that they don't drench in oil is their soft drinks.  Try to take a piece of their bread or pizza or bread and set it on a napkin for a bit.  The whole napkin will be oil.  Oh, you ordered their delivery and its cold?  Put it in the microwave for a bit on a paper towel and you will see.  The very absolute last time I'll ever eat here my fiance brought back some of their "lasagne".  It was like a dry brick of some pasta made last week and reheated 14 times with nasty marinara on top.  G-R-O-S-S gross.

Do yourself a favor and spend $4 on some Ragu in a jar and dry pasta you boil at home.  You will like it more than this junk.

I've only been to Pompei twice, 3 years apart.

I've gotten a square piece of pizza, I remember it being greasy.

I also recently got a panini of the day-Chicken/Spinach that fantastic. It was very juicy, a bit greasy, but HUGE. Enough to feed 2 people for sure, you could get a panini and a salad for under $15.

They have Magic Hat, Fat Tire, and some other beers in a bottle for under $4. Not too shabby. They also have wine. The place seats enough people BUT, the wait here is horrible. They have so many people in their kitchen, I'm not really sure how their stuff doesn't come out quicker.

That being said, if I'm in the mood for a panini, I'll head here. Nearby Pane's doesn't take cash, Pompei does...

In heaven there are no menu's just clones of David Beckham walking around displaying plates of the options that you can see and smell, also cupcakes do not go straight to your ass.

Needless to say, I was very impressed with the large glass showcase that housed all of the dishes they serve, even though by 7pm some of them were really close to the edge of spoiling, pssst Pompei, 7hr old clams are not appetizing.

I was so excited to see their reasonable alcohol prices and quickly ordered up a $4 glass of wine, then it came out in a miniature juice glass and it all made sense.

We ordered the Calamari which was a huge disappointment. It was a small serving of SUPER bland calamari that was half baby octopi NO ONE likes to eat babies, served with super bland marinara sauce and the real kicker was that it was served atop 4 slices of baguette to make the bowl seem fuller, I am not dumb ! The Gnocchi again were very bland, not bad but nothing special. Though I will say the Chopped Chicken salad was pretty delicious.

Overall its just okay which in a dining mecca like Chicago doesn't cut it. Please save your self the disappointment and go ANYWHERE else.

It is what it is-- it's not a fine dining restaurant, and shouldn't be reviewed as such.  It's great for a casual lunch or dinner, or delivery of a great lunch or dinner at work.  They have a large delivery range.  I would probably also use them for catering.  My favorite is the heart healthy pizza wrap thingy, it has a whole wheat crust and veggies and low-fat cheese inside.

The salads are good, I like the grilled veggie salad w/out chicken.  The calamari is great, it's real and not rubbery.  The rest is honestly average Italian food.  Big portions of pasta, good spinach lasagna, and more.  It's kind of annoying that they charge .50 for Parmesan cheese, most pizza places just give you that free in packets.  I love the way they display their food so you can see what you're ordering, it's a great idea.  You can always get something different here, as they have specials sometimes and a big menu.

They have some good stuff here, like the basil and tomato pizza, the chopped chicken salad and the chicken ravioli in tomato cream sauce.  But I used to come here just for the calamari.  Then they turned it into a blatant rip-off.  It used to be a healthy portion of calamari on top of a little bed of lettuce.  Then they changed it to a little bit of calamari on top of a thick layer of old, dry bread.  So, the tray looks full because of the all that bread but there is about 1/3 as much calamari as there used to be.  Robbery.

    Hated the food. With despise.

I understand and appreciate that everything is made from scratch. BUT. It tastes just like a deli. Everything is laid out there, and heated up as you order. BAD place to take a girl out on a date. I'd be and am still upset. Pasta just tasted like boiled pasta.. nothing outstanding. Sauce was drenched in extra virgin olive oil. Huge serving size you're forced to take it home and have left overs in the morning that taste even worse when heated up.

My husband calls this our neighborhood Fazoli's. (Minus the beloved breadstick hand-er-out-er). Keep that in mind and your socks will be knocked off. My many trips to Pompei have always been pleasant. They offer a huge menu of pastas, salads and pizzas. And, like Fazoli's, you order and pay at the counter, find a seat, stick up your number and wait for your food to be brought to you on a tray.

Unlike Fazoli's, Pompei has beer and wine (including $1 drafts for Cubs games). The pasta dishes are good, but not outstanding and I'd skip the lasagna if you're a connoisseur. Same for the pizza if you're a self-proclaimed pizza snob. And Pompei's sauce is a little sweet for my taste. That said, I really like their variety of hearty salads and the service is consistently good.

Perhaps they could use that breadstick person...

This was, by far, the shittiest place I have eaten at. The "pesto" pasta was a bowl filled with pasta still drenched in the water it was boiled in and sprinkled with olive oil and a teaspoon of pesto. The vegetables were also really undercooked.
My sister ordered the gnocchi where the marinara was watered down and the actual noodles tasted absolutely bland.
The only redeeming quality about this experience was that I did not choke on the food and die as I would not want eating here to be my last memory on this earth.

I used to love this place for take out or delivery.  Unfortunately when the economy turned a few years ago so did the quality of this place.  At first I just thought I had a bad experience, then it was followed by another.  I gave up on it for a long time but recently decided to give them another chance and they failed again.  What I didnt like was pretty much everything.

I love gnocchi and always ordered it from there because they said it was 'homemade'.  It used to be little logs of joyfullness but not it appears to the mass produced version I can find in my local grocery store and boil myself in 4 mins.  The salads have gotten limp and unappealing and the sauce just doesnt seam to wow like it did.

I know it is a chain but it used to be so good.  Now it just seems like overpriced, mass produced pasta no more special than I can make myself.

This place is a yummy little joint.

Very very casual, good italian food. I've eaten at the restaurant and ordered delivery multiple times. I really love their ravioli and their pizza strudels.

I prefer to eat there if I'm ordering pasta however because I feel like they give bigger portions at the restaurant and also the pasta cools off by the time it gets delivered, unlike the pizza/ pizza strudels. They say the food is delivered 'within the hour' but its almost always a few minutes after.

This place sort of reminds me of the panera of the italian world. Kind of generic, but pretty good food.

Where does a daughter go for lunch while waiting for her mom to have emergency surgery for a broken face?  I guess Pompei Bakery.

I was craving "Italian" food and a glass of red wine.  I saw Pompei fit this criteria and I decided to give it a try.  I ordered up their baked mostaccioli and a glass of Sangiovese.

I sat down, placed my  number in it's holder and waited about five minutes for my food to arrive.  My one issue was the sauce was a bit runny for my liking.  I had to add grated Parmesan cheese to try and thicken it up a bit.  Overall, the flavor was adequate, the wine was wine, and the bill was small.  My meal, with leftovers, cost me no more than $10.  I'd go back to try other items on the menu, as I'm intrigued as to what pizzicotto is, oh and for the cheap glasses of wine.

I've been back to this place about a dozen times in the past 3 years or so, and everything I've tried has been great.

Some of those things to note are:

1 - Chicken Caesar Salad - even a small is enough to fill you up.  Go for a large if you dare (and want leftovers)
2 - Pizza - fluffy crust, rubbery cheese, just enough crunch on the edges.
3 - Pizza Strudel - keep signing me up for the Chicken Parmigiana
4 - Barq's Red Creme Soda - you have my heart!

Not to mention it's cheap, super quick, and delicious.

    Don't miss out!

I wonder if it's just this location, but I've had numerous bad experiences here. It's nearby so I've used it in a pinch since it's just quick, but I've never had anything that I'd consider good or tasty. The pasta sauce was thin and flavorless, the baked pasta had a layer of cheese that tasted as if it had been melted and left to sit for a long period of time.

I try to be very courteous of service staff anywhere, but I do have to say the service here has never been good. On one occasion I went in to order two salads. Simple enough I thought even though every few minutes someone would come out of the kitchen to say they were out of asparagus or they were out of mushrooms, etc. By the time they were done, it was basically just lettuce and tomatoes. It was so bad that I canceled the salad and ended up eating at home. On another occasion, I went with my family and the entire table was practically done eating by the time my sister's spaghetti came. No one ever apologized or offered to bring her anything else in the meantime. This is just unacceptable and I'll find somewhere else for my casual Italian fix.

I live right down the street from this place so I find myself running down there to pick up food pretty often. Pompei is an enigma of restaurants because the price points and the food quality are somewhere in between the status quos for quick serve and casual dining.

I'm a huge fan of the egg plant parm sandwich. It is a hell of a sandwich for under 5 bucks.

Added bonus: if you order an entree for dine in then you get a complimentary glass of house wine with your meal. What's not to love?

Pompei does. and it's the best pizza I've had since I've been in Chicago.

Love the crust. Love the sauce. Love the cheese. Love the amount of ingredients too! I am in love. I also love that its right down the street from my house.

Once you walk into Pompei, the plethora of unbelievable smells just makes your mouth start to water. Everything looks so fresh, tastes so fresh and its just amazing.

Love the guys that walk around and give you samples. High fives all over.

The prices are legit and right around perfect! Beer is cheap.

If you want a Panera like experience for Italian food with better quality food, Pompei is your spot.  We went there with a relatively large group after watching some college hoops across the street and this was probably the ideal balance of quick food and sit down eating that we were looking for at that point.  The menu was a bit overwhelming for some of our party as it has about a million different choices on there, but in the end we all left rather full.  I definitely dropped close to $20 on my meal and got a few weird looks in the process, but 3 large pieces of pizza and some spinach ravioli is a reasonable amount of food for me.

How convenient it would've been if pompei made good tasting food, because I lived a block away.  Too bad they don't.  I really tried.
I've tried their pizza, salads, and pasta... all of which were NARSTY.
The pasta sauce tastes like it may have dishwasher detergent in it.  I don't even hate my dirty dishes enough to subject them to that.  The chicken was rubbery.  I'm all about rubber chickens, but not for digestion.

The pizza reminds me of the square mystery slices that you got from the cafeteria in junior high school.  Ya know, where the cheese is all hard but the crust is spongy and greasy.  I would definitely trade a slice of their pizza for a fruit roll-up and a Yoo-Hoo.  Hell, I would even trade it for a wedgie.  It was Siiiiiiiiick.

Pompei has great soups, salads, sandwiches, and pastas.  The pizzas are okay... despite others' excitement about them, they seem to be hit or miss, and I therefore rarely order them.  I feel like it's a little pricey for the experience, but based on the food quality and the time it takes to get your meal, I assume everything is made to order.

My personal favorites are their white bean soup, the Mela Verde salad (lettuce, apples, dried cherries, blue cheese, walnuts and house vinaigrette), and the eggplant sandwich.

I end up here alot when I try to go to Panes (across the street) before realizing I have no cash.

I agree with the husband.. even while eating, we were thinking to ourselves that the food was mediocre, at best, and that Yelp would probably have good reviews because the place had a dozen or so customers on a quiet Wednesday night. It just didn't add up!

Maybe there aren't a lot of options nearby, I don't know.. but we were at Masonic Hospital and just walked around looking for something fast. We skipped the sushi place since that's not our thing, we saw a pizza place but it looked pretty lonely.. and so we settled for Pompei for a quick dinner.

I ordered the lasagna and my sister had the chicken alfredo. We decided to swap about half-way since we were both disappointed with our choices.

The lasagna wasn't terrible, it just wasn't really warm and/or tasty. The portion was just right for the price, I guess. I did enjoy the free refills on my drink, though.

The chicken alfredo.. wooow that was a little tougher to eat. The chicken had no taste, I had to add salt to give it some life. And the pasta was pretty bland so salt and some cheese was added to that. The broccoli was the best thing actually.

I doubt I'll come again, I'll settle for cereal and a banana at the hospital cafeteria.

The Wellington Brown Line access makes this place for me. I would likely not venture the short distance from my home otherwise, but:

There are some good deals on good food here. For example: a half order of the rich, and varied Italian pasta entrees is plenty. No need to spend $9.00 for a full order when $5.00 will do, especially if accompanied by a soup, salad or you split a calamari appetizer, which feeds three people.

Pitchers of Pompei Ale, which is very good enough, are $11.00 (that certianly takes care of two or three adults).  A very big enough slice of cheese pizza is $2.95, and satisfies my kid every time.

Don't want a pitcher of beer? Draft beer for $1 with any entree.

So, with an adult or two, and a kid, and some beer, and plenty of food, your talkin' bargain price for very, very good enough fare. (They serve wine, too).

And the counter service eliminates tipping crappy servers, which seem to be pandemic in Chicago chowhouses of late.

NB: the pizzacado sucks. It's something like wrapped pizza crust with stuff inside. Too doughy and too much money - just a hands down dumbass item, but they probably sell a lot of this stuff.

All else: thumbs up if your expectations are in line. It's not gourmet Italian; it's journeyman at best but it's definitely not pretending to be something it's not, which is more than you can say about way too many restaurants.

Pompei is one of the places I like to pretend doesn't exist - sheerly for the sake of my ass not getting any bigger.

I have been in love with this place since my father first introduced me to the pizza strudel at the location on Taylor St after a "big city" driving lesson when I was 16. When I moved roughly a mile away from the Sheffield location 2 years ago, it became a weekly dinner stop.

Since then, I've come to love almost everything on their menu. To rewind, the pizza strudel is exactly what you would imagine it to be. It's cooked much like a pastry, but with a thicker, less flaky crust. Ironically, none of the pizza strudel varieties are similar to a traditional pizza. My favorites are: Steak Fajita, Chicken Parmesean, Beef Angelo, and The Poor Boy. I will forgive almost any indiscretion if an apology is accompanied by a piping hot Poor Boy from Pompei.

Another gem is their pasta. Pompei hand cuts their own pasta and God bless them for doing so as it is prepared al dante every time. While the marinara is average, the tomato cream sauce is definitely noteworthy. It comes served with the herb chicken ravioli, however they do allow sauce substitution and I find that it tastes delicious over fettuccine and topped with grilled chicken.

I don't often eat in the restaurant, but I have dined on the patio once. The location on Sheffield is perfect because it sits in a mostly residential area (aside from the hospital) so it is a nice place to enjoy a quiet dinner with minimal traffic and no bar noise.

As soon as you walk into Pompei, you get an excellent aroma. And you've got to love first impressions!

It's set up cafeteria style, and the menu is pretty easy to read. They also have all of the desert choices on display, which if you're me, if it looks delicious, I'm buying it.

The Minestrone soup was incredible! And the portion size was huge. All for 2.95.

They have a good Italian Beef sandwich, but the pasta is where it's at. The baked mostaccioli was awesome. Great sauce and topped with a  layer of Parmesan cheese that seemed to seep into the noodles. Man, it's tasty.

If you want some good comfort food and a good choice of yummy deserts, than Pompei is for you.

    Pretty disappointing.

I've been avoiding Pompei for a few years...and I couldn't think why, but I know the reason.
It sucks!  (Actually, I vaguely remember trying Pompei near Oak Brook mall, and the food was pretty gross.  I had some ravioli, and it was undercooked (not al dente, but al rock hard and cold).  I remembered this while I was complaining about my food at home).

I ate some overpriced pasta, and it was overpriced.  Did I mention it was overpriced?
It takes forever too.  For carry-out, I think we waited 25 minutes for pasta (with olive oil, garlic, and tomatoes) and a pre-made pizza that they had to heat up.

The quality is fast food, but the price and time it takes for the food is sit-down chain restaurant.

Maybe I'll be back again if I forget why I hated it.

I use to eat at the locations in the loop and recently realized that this location is somewhat close to work.

We have gone here a handful of times and I have to admit that I have the same thing every time which is the soup and the works pizza. Both are always tasty and are delivered to the table quickly.

The staff has always been very helpful and quick to take your order. The floor staff are also very pleasant and remove dishes quickly when you are finished.

I big change from the burger and hot dog lunches we usually have.

Pompei is neither New York nor Chicago style--it's it's own style. I found them  through GrubHub and ordered their handrolled pizza since I didn't know what "pizzicoto" was and a quick googling didn't help silence my grumbly tummy anyway. An hour later (and during a tornado warning--ballsy!) the delivery guy handed me a huge slab of a box that contained a gigantic square of grease, cheese and bread. The crust is a bit weird--it's not crispy, it's chewy and doughy, like soggy Italian bread. The four-cheese pizza idea apparently also means four times the cheese as this sucker was drowning in it and demanded use of a fork and knife to transport it from plate to mouth. I'd also  recommend cutting each slice in half for human-sized consumption.

If you're looking for delicate, summery pizza and you dig that floury, cracker-like thin crust this is not the way to go. If you're starving for a grease-lubed mega-carb intake, though, hit up Pompei.

I've dined in and have had good service... quick... easy... good!  Plus, the bar that sponsored my softball league used to cater in pasta and pizza from Pompei and it was always GREAT!!

The by-the-slice pizza there looks a little scary sometimes, though, but I keep going back!
