2 reviews for Polonez Restaurant
Last week the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel restaurant critic listed Polonez in Cudahy as one of his 30 best restaurants in the Milwaukee area. I am half Polish and my mom used to prepare more Polish food than she does now, so I was a bit hungry for something different, and we checked it out. Polonez is in an out-of-the-way southern suburb, not too far from the popular Bayview neighborhood, but not really near anything of note.
The inside is pleasant, a bit grandmotherly, decorated with lots of pinks and flowers, but clean and very welcoming. The service was very attentive Tuesday night and the clientele overwhelmingly older. We ordered the "mighty" Polish plate, a sample of Polish sausage, a potato pancake, a stuffed cabbage roll, and some very delicious perogis. To me the pierogis seemed deceptively like a potsticker, which goes to show how much time I spend eating Chinese food compared to anything European. When I bit into the cheese one, I had to stop the conversation I was having with my mother it was so delicious.
We also ordered the bigos (?) hunter's stew, a mix of sauerkraut and different meats in a very thick stew. The mashed potatoes served with both dishes were rich and delicious. We both had sweet Polish red wines, tasty for those of us not-so-sophisticated wine drinkers. Overall, I enjoyed parts of the meal and was very impressed with Polonez, however, I won't be rethinking my favorite Latin and Asian cuisines any time soon.
If you want excellent home cooked Polish food without flying to Poland try this spot!! love love love it!!
