Daly City, CA
We passed by this place a lot since we stayed nearby. It actually closes later than the rest of the businesses around it so that was cool. We parked, ordered from the small window and took it back to our condo.
Burger was yum. Fries were overloaded with stuff and it was good and we couldn't finish it. Fish tacos was ehh. They used tortillas meant for burrito and it lacked fish. Don't go for the tacos. Prices are reasonable but not the best quality on certain things. Come here if you're on a budget, well even if you're not. -

Kauai is one of those places where you just want to eat fresh healthy food all day. Sadly, there are not many restaurants where they serve fresh healthy food. Luckily, I am a connoisseur of garbage food so I can say with authority that Poipu Grill is some delicious garbage. Boyfriend got the double cheeseburger with bacon and I got chili cheese fries. So very good, and not even remotely good for you. If this place were in San Francisco, I would go here every time I wanted chili cheese fries. Or arterial plaque.
The only downsides are that there's no place to sit, and it takes a while to get your food, so if you're super hungry and/or impatient, waiting for your food won't be pleasant. -

Yum.
I got the special, a substantial teriyaki ono burger that was perfectly grilled and topped with pineapple and teri sauce that dripped down to my elbows. The boy got a mushroom burger that put him in a food coma for the rest of the afternoon. The fries were awesome, and so was the price.
There's nowhere to sit, but this place is close enough to the beach to go plunk down at a picnic table and watch the waves. -

This was definitely my favorite place! The burger is juicy and delicious! I really liked the chicken katsu with the macaroni salad and corn. Lilikoi Cheesecake Pie was yummy too.
However... Fish and chips were bleh. The fried saiman was bleh too.
I was just happy to find a place that was well-priced and close to the hotel. We walked from Koa Kea and the walk wasn't that far at all! -

We were hungry late at night and randomly discovered Poipu Grill in a small plaza. It is ilterally a hole in the wall, as in there's a window in a wall that you order your food, and nowhere to sit. You pretty much have to do take out here or sit on the curb in the parking lot.
We got Teriyaki Chicken and Chicken Strips with fries. The teriyaki chicken was such a disappointment! It was extremely salty, and with each bite I had to pucker my lips to get myself to swallow. You'll need a lot of rice if you plan on ordering this dish. The chicken strips were a lot better - they give you about 7 per order and they had a nice crispy crunch to them. The fries were typical.
This is a good place to grab a quick meal, but don't come expecting too much. Like much of the other food I've had on Kauai, this place was average at best. -
Review from Ravena F.
Damn! We wished we had tried this place on our first day in Kauai so that we could have avoided the glut of pricey (and bland) touristy places all over the Poipu area. This is a great little window shop, located to the left of the Kukuiula grocery store.
You order at the window, get your take out (no real places to sit here), then go nosh, nosh, num, yum wherever you want to. The fish tacos and perfectly cooked ono sandwich were our favorites here (terriyaki chicken elicited a weak "meh").
Finally! Affordable and tasty food in the Poipu area. Woot! -

This is a kitchen that operates out of a small pick up window next to the grocery store in the tiny shopping center just north of the traffic circle between Koloa and the Poipu beach area. There is a small sign and no seating outside. Blink and you'll miss it. But, it is *by far* the least expensive place to get food in Poipu and the food is decent.
Food: Good american fare, mostly burgers. The teriyaki burger with fresh pineapple is yummy. Sides are good. Extremely friendly prices ($7 for a big burger, $2 for fries).
Service: good, considering it's a pick-up window. Expect to wait 10-20 minutes for your food, depending on how busy it is. -
Review from Jean C.
This was the burger that I needed/wanted but didn't know it until I took my first bite. Wowza. This burger hit the spot! We had just picked up the rental and headed to Poipu. We found the beach and just needed to get lunch. I read the reviews on Yelp and knew we would be in good hands.
It really is sandwiched right between two other stores! If someone hadn't posted the picture of the storefront, we may have missed it altogether. We ordered two Poipu cheddar cheeseburgers. The burger was huge and delicious. We were contemplating fries and I am glad we didn't because the burger was very filling.
The one bad thing is that there are no tables to sit down to eat the food. It's a take out counter. We ate our burgers in the car and I got some grease on my dress. It came out so it was worth it. -

Let me start by saying this started as a 1-2 star review and after actually eating my burger it changed to 5.
$27 got us a Big Kuhuna burger, shrimp and fries, two drinks, side of fries, and a cup of clam chowder. The girl was nice. I asked for no burger sauce as I don't eat mayo.
Fast forward 10 minutes, we got the food and drove back to our condo. I open my burger and their burger sauce was on BOTH buns. We drove back and I was mad. Waited another 10 (?) minutes and their review dropped to a 2. Then I tried the burger.... HEAVEN on a bun. Never has great tasting food outweighed an issue with mayo or sour cream on my food, but this burger was literally the best i had ever tasted. Also the fries were hot and had seasoning salt, delicious as well.
Seriously, if you are in the area stop and try one.
Now, my hubby's shrimp and fries, just okay.
NOTE: this is just food stand. Nowhere to eat your food on site. So, plan this as take-out or eat it in your car in the parking lot.Listed in: What we did in Kaua'i

San Francisco, CA
Amazingly good burgers at a great price! This place is just a walk-up window wedged between a grocery store and a tour guide company, so don't expect a ton of ambiance. However, they may very well have the best burgers in Kauai.
I tried the Ms. Teri burger, which is a burger with pineapple and teriyaki sauce. The three important elements: burger, pineapple, and teriyaki sauce, were all flawless. I'd highly recommend it.
Also worth noting are the "loaded fries." These are seasoned french fries topped with bacon, ranch dressing, cheese, and a bit of green onions. Heaven in my mouth!
2 burgers, 2 sodas, and one serving of loaded fries came out to $24. Pretty good deal for such amazing taste. -

This is hard to find - sandwhiched in between a surf shop and a small grocery store just North of the round-about on the road to Poipu.
There is no seating - it's take out, only. Super burgers and other sandwiches. Try their Club Sandwich. Their fries are the best on the island! Prices are cheap - $7 for a cheeseburger and $2 for fries.
Try their special for the day - usually a fresh fish.
The place is good, cheap and real bargain value!

I used to come to this place when it was a Mexican restaurant. It was quick cheap and delicious! After coming back to Kauai I was upset to find it had changed.
I got a blue cheese burger and was totally bumbed. No blue cheese crumbles - just a mayo like spread. It was gross and I felt crappy after eating there. My sister said the fish tacos were bad as well. AVOID this place -

Don't drive by too fast. If you missed it the first time you're getting close. Poipu Grill is literally a 'hole-in-the-wall' at a small and older strip mall just north of the Poipu rotary. Nothing fancy here, just good food. I would say 'fast', but that's only after you typically wait in a line that proves how popular it can be.
As we only eat veggie and fish out our choices were limited. The best was the ono burger with a juicy and fresh hunk of fish in a wonderfully tasty bun. We read an earlier review about it having teriyaki, but that is a long gone special. The ono plate was also really good, but since they were out of rice we got the fries. Lucky us, they were the best fries we had on the island. Choosing between the two, my wife thought the ono burger is easily the best choice.
Since it's all to go, great place to grab a styrofoam meal and head to the beach for a sunset picnic at a great price. -

This place has great burgers and french fries! I feel that for any size bread there is a perfect amount of meat, and these burgers just fit the bill. Their 1/3 pound burgers are delicious and succulent. If you are more in the mood for more protein, get the Big Kahuna, it's like a wall of meat between two buns (2 1/3 patties) and is amazing. As for their fries, they are very crispy and fried just the right amount. As a point of reference, they are not the big fat kind but rather the thinner kind.
After 4pm, they add more dinner-y items to their menu. I've tried both their fish tacos which were above average and the chicken katsu. The katsu was fantastic as it was crisp and sweet! -

Unfortunately, this restaurant is now closed or moved.
I came here for a wedding, and wanted to try this place out because it had very good reviews. We stopped by and it is now a place called "Da Crack" that serves a robust menu of.... maybe 6 items. The food was moderately OK, but the wait was ridiculous... ESPECIALLY for Mexican food. 30 minutes for a beef burrito? Are you serious? Even on "Island Time" that's excessive.
See "Da Crack" reviews to find out just how much of a waste it is now. I'm so disappointed I missed out on this Poipu Grill. -

Perhaps I'm just spoiled having grown up on the Gulf of Mexico and having amazing fried shrimp at my disposal. I didn't try any of the burgers, but the shrimp and chips and it was a grease fest. I wasn't too stoked on the batter either. I like the price, but no so much the taste.

We went here for a burger on our first day on Kauai after reading the reviews here. Now, the staff was friendly, and I ordered a teriyaki burger and my wife a more conventional cheeseburger. Overall, the food was fine, but not exceptional by any means. My bun was dry and the meat tasted like a store bought premade patty. This is not to say it was terrible, but it was not anything special. The teriyaki sauce was very good, although I do not think it goes well with the special 1000 island style dressing they apparently put on all the burgers. The side order of fries we got was tasty, although they were just plain fries augmented by some spices that were shaken over the top. Having had genuinely good hamburgers at specialty places before, I was very underwhelmed. Not so bad as to make you throw the food back, but not worth a long trip to find it either.

Just a window to order fantastic burgers and such. For lunch had a huge double burger with fries. Great, great burger. Don't let their special sauce scare you, Mayo & chipolte. Not spicy, just super flavor. Hot and crunchy fires are excellent. No seating, so plan on take out. A must eat when in Poipu.

I love this place! It is right in the condo complex where we stay, so it is just a hop skip and a jump away. The fish is delicious, and the price range is pretty average. The service is good, and it is in a great open-air atmosphere with a slight view of the ocean.

Found it on Yelp. Inexpensive beach food in resortland. We picked up fish sandwiches & fries & went to Spouting Horn, where we ate overlooking the ocean. Great food. They had never heard of Yelp, so if you go, mention it. *As you go south toward the shore past Koloa, keep an eye out for a little strip mall on the right, just before the round-about--they are in the middle.* See my photos.*

Poipu Grill has good burgers, both beef and fish, at reasonable prices if you are looking for a quick meal...fries were too salty.

I had a Cheddar cheese burger and side of fries. The burger had a killer sauce on it that made it perfect. The fries were hot and salted perfectly!!! They also gave a good portion of fries. It is hard to find good food in Kauai and this place is a must while here!!!

Great alternative to all the expensive food on the island. Burgers are reasonably priced and really tasty. I got the blue cheese burger and my wife got the pineapple teriyaki burger and both were great. The buns are fresh and add a lot to the burger. Best of all were the loaded fries. They cover them with cheese, bacon, ranch dressing, and deliciousness...

It's a hole in the wall take out operation, so don't go expecting a dining experience. You order, wait on the sidewalk for you name to be called, and then eat in your car or the beach. I read Julian H's review and figured it was worth a shot - best value I found on Kauai!
Fish burger is a grilled piece of fish with a high quality bun and great tartar sauce. Fries are good and made to order. We ate a lot of other places and paid a lot more for a "dining experience" and disappointing food. My theory is that Hawaiians do a lot of takeout and the best places, like the Grill, are the holes in the wall. -

fried saimen. I was dissappointed when i found out it was going to be fried instead of soup style but after biting into it i was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty darn good, killed it quick.

Not so great unfortunately. We had the fish plate which was ok but a little tasteless. We also had the saimin which was very salty. The terriaki was over cooked and the sauce heavy. Too bad because we wanted to like it. Not that many inexpensive options in this area

Laguna Beach, CA
poipu grill started out great, probably a 4 star rating for good food and good prices. i had the grilled fresh fish the first visit and it was great, tasty fish unadorned by anything unnecessary and some rice.
my second trip was a step down as i had a hankering for some fish & chips and i thought what better place to try fish and chips than kauai with its locally sourced product. it ended up being ok, i think if they had some vinegar i would have been content, but as they were out and the store next door had nothing but red wine vinegar i had to improvise with salsa. my wife on this occasion tried the fish tacos and was wholly unimpressed; we're pretty spoiled in so cal with excellent choices for fish tacos, but these were particularly pedestrian. though the french fries were good.
on the night i decided on a burger, again being on kauai i thought the teriyaki burger with pineapple sounded pretty good. unfortunately much like my experience at the poipu burger grill the slop they put on top and claimed was teriyaki was awful. the pineapple was leathery and tasteless. i scraped both off the burger and "salvaged" it with some ketchup and mustard.
if you go here stick with the basics, burgers, fresh fish, etc... it's the cheapest thing in the area and if you don't get too adventurous you'll be fine.
in my time in poipu i've learned a few things about the food: it's really expensive, even the very best restaurants are only "good" and avoid sauces at all costs, they're almost universally awful. -

My husband and I are traveling with our 16 month old and it is easier to get takeout most nights. The Poipu Grill was the perfect place to pick up dinner. The food was fresh and fairly priced. We had the fish and chips, the grilled fish platter, and the bean soup. Everything was great. The fries were awesome. Even the tarter sauce was great. Next time we are in Kauai we will be sure to stop by again.

Yummy, juicy teriyaki burger. Fresh pineapple slice, homemade bun and lots of drippy stuff to mop up with fries. Fried fish was good too. Fries were seasoned and fresh. Good prices and close enough to the beach for a quick lunch.

Longmont, CO
We found this place by accident while looking for a shrimp truck. I love this kind of place. We had fish burgers and fried shrimp. They were both KILLER! The shrimp was fried perfectly. The fries are made on premise, crunchy and decently salted. The fish sandwich was wonderful- lots of tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato on a bun that doesn't smother the taste. There's no place to sit, so take out is the only option. Grab a beer from the grocery next door and eat at the beach. Definitely worth a stop if you are in Lihuie or on your way to Waimea.

It's ok but nothing to write home about.
The best thing about Poipu Grill is that it opens late - until 9pm, when other take-out places have already closed. Otherwise, food is ok - nothing to rave about. Ordered fish burger, fried shrimp and chicken katsu. Food tasted ok but it was not a memorable meal. -
Review from Ryan B.
East Village, Manhattan, NY
I go here about once a week or so, simply because they have the greatest fries on the island. Also, their "Magic Mushroom Burger" is fantastic. You can get a burger, fries, and a drink for around $8-10, so it's pretty affordable. They also serve some dinner entrees after 4pm, such as Chicken Katsu. Just about everything here is fried in some way, so if you're a health nut, you may want to stay away, but if you're hungry for some quick and tasty food in Poipu, definitely stop by.

Review from Aaron M.
Menlo Park, CA
The serving size was great (I went from starving to super stuffed and we only split a fries between 3 people plus a burger each). Moderately priced, it was only $8 for a burger and drink. The burgers are only cooled medium well, which was too overdone for my taste, especially since the bun was also slightly burned and charred tasting. I had the BBQ bacon burger and the bacon was also over-cooked. Just ok overall but it was close by. The burgers took about 10 minutes and it didn't seem too busy, but we weren't in a hurry so it wasn't too bad.

My partner wants me to give it five stars. He had a Big Kahuna Burger and keeps telling me it was super good. I had the shrimp and fries, too much batter and not enough shrimps. Although the place is supposed to be good for burgers, so I should have chosen better... the fries were super good though.
