If I could have given the tour we went on 6 stars, I would have. Bioluminescent kayaking is the first time I've ever LOVED fog before. On the first half of our journey, we kayaked across Tomales Bay through thicker fog, which was actually really cool, because you kind of felt like you were in a bubble the whole time because the atmosphere is opaque. We couldn't see the wildlife as well as on a clear night, but we could hear it and see it some. It was eery and beautiful and you could just see the shapes of the islands as we neared, until they came into full view. The whole paddle there felt like a cross between a mystical adventure conjuring up images of Scotland, and a scary movie which was funny and fun and we had a great group laughing and making jokes. When we landed on the beach at Hog Island, it was just starting to get dark. The guides set up tables and we had hot cocoa and brownies, cookies, fruit cobbler bars, chocolate croissants and almond croissants TO DIE FOR from a local bakery in Point Reyes. After our dessert picnic on the beach, it was dark and someone shouted that the bioluminescence had begun. I still had NO IDEA what that meant. I ran over to the water... which looked normal to me... until my friend ran into it and started moving around. HOLY COW. It's like GLOW IN THE DARK WATER. When you move, the water glows for a few seconds where the movement occurred. If you swirl it in circles, there's a glowing circle in the otherwise "black" water. If you send a spray of water in the air, it glitters across the sky and sparkles when it lands back on the water again. If you run your hand through the water, it glows all around it, and when you lift your hand back out, it glitters like a brilliant night sky during a meteor shower. I felt giddy and ridiculous the whole time just staring at my hand being like OMG IT'S GLITTERING! Fish swim by in beautiful glowing streams that look like comets and moon beams. It's INCREDIBLE. INSANE. MAGICAL. Le sigh. The fog was so thick (the thicker the better for this kind of thing), the bioluminescence lasted ALL the way back to shore. It usually stops about halfway back because of light pollution. I don't recommend this trip, I think it's mandatory for anyone who wants adventure, beauty and magic for an evening.

If I could give 0 stars I would. These people are TERRIBLE.
I bought two tours when they had a deal on sfgate. After much haggling and several long discussions via email and on the phone, I booked a tour in the beginning of June, which was cancelled due to conditions, and was told it would not be a problem to rebook it. They have yet to even answer one of my several emails and voicemails with any information about how and when I can rebook or a rebate for our two cancelled tours.
Book with ANYONE ELSE. -

Having been an avid Kayaker before I moved, I was looking forward for a trip around Tomales Bay with the ladies from Point Reyes Outdoors. I was with a group of mixed experience paddlers and was impressed with their tutorial of how best to utilize the kayak and best practices to keep everyone from getting hurt and having a great time.
The Kayaks and equipment were in great shape, the guides where super knowledgeable about the area and when I just wanted to paddle off for a bit and burn some energy they were super chill about it.
Overall a great experience and Im glad my first kayak adventure on the west coast was with them!
They mentioned they did camping trips too, after hanging out with the guides for a bit, if im ever interested in roughing it in West Marin, these will be the people I call. -

OMG!!!! My nephew and I went on the Sunset to Starlight tour last night and it was amazing! Our guides Casey and Achilles were great - very patient and thorough - I had never kayaked before. They suited us up in our gear and provided easy to understand instructions and off we went.
We circled Hogg Island and saw cormorants, pelicans and harbor seals. Then traveled over to a cove to see a herd of Tulle elk - they are magnificent. We paddled around the cove checking out the starfish and jelly fish before stopping at a little beach for our hot drinks and snacks from the Bovine Bakery - YUM!
On the paddle back we enjoyed the bioluminescence - the most magical thing you will ever see or experience! It was a foggy night - so we had great viewing for the entire trip home! Fish and seals left slipstreams of light as they swam around us - you have to experience this for yourself.
GO now!! -

What a wonderful experience. Point Reyes Outdoors leads kayaking trips around Tomales Bay. I went on a 4-hour outing with my family, and our guide was incredibly patient with us (well, me--I was an hour late) and totally laid back. We saw jellyfish, pelicans, elk, and starfish, and got to experience Point Reyes from the water. How could you not enjoy yourself? But then Steve served us some amazing local bread, cheese, and fruit for lunch, and we had to paddle on back.
Very organized, a well-run operation. They were great about confirming our reservation, and provided very clear driving directions and instructions on appropriate clothing. I will definitely be going on more trips with them again. -

Rented a mountain bike this past weekend to do some trail riding at Point Reyes and had a fantastic experience. After an informal email and phone call a few days in advance, we arrived to find our bike ready to go. At $42/day for a nice hard-tail MTB the rate was MUCH cheaper than bike shops along the way who wanted to charge $100 for a rental demo bike.
The woman in the office (sorry I forgot your name) dodged phone calls to help us get going and provided lots of good info and a map about rides.
We'll be back for a kayak next time! -

Amazing trip with great tour guides. The bioluminescence was out of this world! I'd definately recommend hanging out with Laurie who guarantees a good time and a load of information to go along with it. We can't wait to go on another trip!

My husband and I absolutely loved our kayaking trip. It was just the two of us with a tour guide for six hours on the water. We did stop and have lunch on a beach that was so peaceful. Lunch was provided and it was food from all local companies around Point Reyes. We seen leopard sharks, bat rays, star fish, and jelly fish. This is where I learned that not all jelly fish sting. Our guide was really cool and new the water like the back of his hand. We highly recommend Point Reyes Outdoors !

Do it now! Sign up for the Sunset to Starlight trip. The sunset was so gorgeous I regretted not having a camera (bring a disposable waterproof camera). Laura and Achilius made a fantastic pair of guides, ensuring that our group of 12 stayed together (6 pairs). I will definitely do another kayak trip with Point Reyes Outdoors.

So much fun! My fiancee booked a guided kayaking tour for us as my valentine's gift and it was such a blast! We met our guide, Matthew, and his partner Joanna, around 10am at the Drake's Bay Oyster Co., and we ended up being the only 2 on the tour (probably b/c the forecast was mostly rain last weekend). They never cancel for any minimum attendance, which is awesome, as we'd made the 2 hour drive from the peninsula and we were excited to get on the water with Saturday's improved forecast.
Prior to us heading out, he provided super-helpful instruction on the most effective paddling techniques to utilize our core muscles, and steering with the rudder, and safety precautions. Throughout the day, he told us lots about the wildlife we saw (from all the birds to the adorable and curious seals), the eel grass and kelp in a few spots, the oyster industry in the area, and tons more.
Lunch was amazing with all locally grown ingredients in the salads, guacamole, breads, cheeses and desserts. So good! especially after such an exhilarating paddle in the morning, and with such a tranquil and beautiful spot on Drake's Bay to relax for a bite.
With times of strong winds and others of more relaxed paddling, it was such a great mix of adventure; and an exhilarating workout; and getting in touch with the environment from a new vantage point with lots of education along the way.
When we returned after 4pm, Matthew and Joanna suggested we try some fresh oysters from the Drake's Bay farm right there, and what a great idea! Delicious!
Thanks so much to Matthew and Joanna for being such tremendous hosts and guides along the way. It made for a trip we will never forget. -

We had a great experience, from the reservations to the quick but thorough training to the wonderful guided tour. Since we walked in at 4pm Saturday, nothing was available, but the woman suggested she call a family that had a private tour scheduled and ask them if they minded we join them. She made the call for us and graciously asked, and the family was very kind to give the OK. The next day we all met at the boat landing and after he training headed out in Tomales Bay to White Gulch on the other side. Our guide was knowledgeable but not over talkative, and was super prepared and organized and handled our mixed bag of riders with ease. A great snack of local cheeses, fresh tasty fruit and locally baked bread was perfect. A trip past Hog Island and back to the landing ended our trip. We saw a leopard shark, white and brown pelicans, a kingfisher, Tule elk, seals, sea stars, anenomoes and of course oysters at one of the local bay farms. We had zero experience in kayaking but due to our guide, all went perfect.
