I very rarely stop a person and ask where she got her hair cut, but a few months ago at Little Fish the hostess's awesome asymmetrical 'do with cool little Vs shaved into the back I had to ask.  The hostess kindly directed me to Jeni at Plume.

Flashback to several months prior... I was in San Francisco, searching for a place to get a haircut, and ended up with one of the worst cuts I've ever had.  It didn't look horrible; It was just sort of choppy and uneven and when it started to grow out... let's just say it was not a pretty scene.

So come to Jeni with this somewhat insane halfway-grown-out mess on my head and basically say: I saw what you did to the hostess at Little Fish.  Fix me.

And fix me she did.  I walked out with an awesome hair cut that (now that I'm getting ready to make an appointment for another trim) has grown out beautifully -- especially considering what she had to start with.  I was so impressed with her work  and the prices, that I made an appointment for her to do my color, too.  I like to have a few colorful streaks, but as someone with naturally dark hair, you really have to bleach the crap out of it in order to get good results.

Jeni is someone who knows the meaning of "bleach the crap out of it."

Even better: not only did I walk out with two awesome light blond streaks (ready to take my choice of color) but the bleached hair also still felt pretty healthy.

Adorable shop! The decor is inviting, the stylists are friendly and experienced, and the prices are completely affordable. Jeni is very skilled, attentive, and down to earth. She definitely knows what she is doing, and gave me so many tips on how to make my hair behave.

So so glad Plume came to Fishtown!

Tina is fantastic.  I switched from a much higher priced salon in Washington West after a few of my friends reported going there and loving it...both were pretty exacting so I figured I'd give it a try.  I can usually get appointments in a week or two as opposed to my old salon which took close to a month.

Tina works fast and does a great job--a tough combo to find.  I get fidgety sitting in a chair for hours--she can die my hair, cut it and blow dry and straighten my thick, long crop of hair in 2 hours--as opposed to 3 or 4 hours at my old salon.  Also, she doesn't take appointments in the time I'm drying or anything--which always makes the cut take longer so it's a nice change.  For someone who is busy and on the go like I am, this is much appreciated.

Tina is also really responsive with what I want done to my hair as opposed to prejudging that I don't want something as drastic as I say because I look a certain way (ie. professional, yuppie...whatever we'd like to call it...a non-drastic looking person) and whereas other stylists groaned when I brought in a picture, she actually almost replicated it and welcomed it.

I've also gotten waxing done there and it was great--no "naked eyebrow" overwaxing like some places do--she listened to exactly what I said.

She's also a really pleasant person to talk to--I've had to change stylists because the person couldn't hold a conversation OR because the stylist's conversation was idiotic and annoying and I'd end up feeling trapped in the chair!

Basically, it's an all-around great experience and the prices are dirt cheap.  Can't beat it.

With summer in the air McThrill was feeling the need to bring back the spiky hair. But rather than call up Jeremiah and go to my standard favorite The Alley, I decided to give some new blood a try (no reason, sometimes I just get curious.). And after reading two VERY differing reviews from people who generally seem to know what they're talking about, I decided to give Plume a try. At the very least I figured that if I walked out with a hair nightmare like Juliana, then It would be a lesson learned, and I'd take extreme measures by grabbing some buzz clippers and making myself look like a military hopeful (I've been the before, FU very much Hiar Cuttery and Manic Panic!). But extreme measures weren't necessary because at the end I came across another incredible hair salon.

As I walked in I was warmly greeted by Tina and Jeni, and offered a beer. And from that point forward the pampering and incredible treatment continued (Zang!). as Jeni cut my hair I found her to be extremely accomodating, engaging to talk too, and a master of the scissors (Equal to Jeremiah? all I know is that it's one scissor competition that I wouldn't mind refereeing.).  And in the end I got one haircut that was exactly how I wanted and then some.

So with my experiment being a success, I might now have to divide my haircut appointments between 2 salons. But at the same time I'm happy to let people know that I know of two salons that go above and beyond for you without really breaking the bank. So I guess that it's one minor sacrifice that I can live with.

Jeni spent a while talking to me about my hair, my last haircut and how much time I spent doing it in the morning before suggesting something I never would have thought of myself.  I decided to let her do it and I'm in love.

The atmosphere is relaxed and there's no pressure to buy expensive crap or come in every 6-8 weeks--Jeni told me I could go a few months before my next cut (and she does free bang trims!)

My haircut is way better than some I've paid twice the price for.

I can't say enough about this place. When I walked in, Jeni gave me 3 options: wine, rum or beer? And I thought I was just coming to get my hair cut. I opted for the Virginia Lightning. We discussed my hair at great length (it probably would have been a 600-word essay) and when it was all said and done, the cut was perfect. I walked out drunk and hair happy.

Every time I go there, I get the best haircut I've ever had. Call for an appointment though, the best kept secret in Philly is quickly becoming declassified... Tina is the best!
