Eh... totally average. I went Sunday night because my boyfriend and I were really craving some Chinese.

I know that a lot of people on here had rave reviews for this place...but I found the food pretty bland and the atmosphere sub par at best.

Everything was average, but nothing was great. I'd say there's no reason you shouldn't give it a try, but don't really expect anything memorable.

They recently moved to their Broadway location from their Hill Street location. I must say this restaurant is a lot better at its new location. It's bigger and has a place for private parties. My workmates and I have organized a luncheon at that place and it was big enough to accommmodate approx. 30 of us in the banquet room. They have a full bar, and it usually fills up during lunch time on weekdays. I'm never around on the weekends, but I'm sure it's just as good.

I recommend going there for lunch around 11:30 am. If you do valet, make sure they validate it. They have lunch specials that include soup, so my coworkers and I usually order one each off the lunch menu and share family style... that way you can taste different entrees and all of you end up being full. :)

Drove over to Chinatown craving some Slippery Shrimp + Egg Foo Young from Yang Chows. This place is one of my favorite chinese restaurants in the city...but at 6pm on a Saturday the wait for a table of four was 45-60 minutes. A friend from Oceanside suggested we walk down the street and find a different place. We stumbled upon The Plum Tree Inn and my friend Zach talked about how he used to go there as a kid before going over to Dodgers stadium. I was a little apprehensive to eat there at first because I had the taste of Egg Foo Young on the tip of my tongue, and as I scanned the menu at Plum Tree Inn there was NO egg foo young!

We decided to order the family style dinner for 4. It started with foil-wrapped chicken, egg rolls and hot&sour soup. It was a good start to what was to become a FANTASTIC meal.

We ordered the Plum Tree chicken strips, Mu Shu Chicken, Sweet&Pungent Shrimp, Kung Pao Chicken and finally the Pork Fried Rice.

Now, me, partner David and our friends Zach and Alondra are LOYAL fans of the Slippery Shrimp,Sauteed Spinach and Egg Foo Young at Yang Chows. This meal made us newbie fans!  The meal was flavorful, presented beautifully, and the whole atmosphere of the restaurant was just mellow. I kept watching other patrons at the restaurant and they looked as happy as we did. All in all our experience was great...except for the idiotic waiter who rolled his eyes when we asked for more lemons for our waiter. He was a TOOL.

Would definitely go back to Plum Tree Inn again.

The most bombin' Chinese food I've ever had. Period. As in grammatically and emphathically.

Oh yeah.

You know how you go to a place.. and their orange chicken sometimes falls apart.. or it's too hard.. or it's too citrusy.. or it's too sweet.. or it's way, way too spicy? Or worse, ALL of the above? This has to be THE place to get the most succulent spicy yet sweet orange chicken. It doesn't fall apart, it's spicy enough to give you sense of bam but not "ow", and makes you wiggle in your seat and go "ooooh".

Ooooh.

Up next was the chow mein. Usually I've been served the following: stringy, dry, flavorless, too much flavor, wet. Since I like my noodles straight up, for my birthday dinner I ordered them plain.

Oh how they glistened underneath the bad 80s decor and lighting. Oh how they were thick and juicy and called out my name, "Tina! Tina! Eat us! Take a large spoonful of our lovin and just eat us!"

So I did.

And I ate like a king. Our bill came out to under 30 bucks since the portions were huge enough to share between the both of us (and then some!) We were so stuffed and delighted that a new place turned out to be so righteously awesome we were already plotting our way back.

I love you, Plum Tree Inn. You were the single best Chinese food experience in my entire life. Thanks for celebrating my 20th birthday with me!

It's 12:30 p.m. on a Wednesday. You don't feel like doing the Parking Dance around downtown. You want real food, plenty of it, don't feel like getting gouged, but still want a sit down adult lunch. Plum Tree Inn is a great place to put in your lunch rotation.

Valet Parking, easy access, full bar, extensive menu, open decor... Plum Tree is not a grab and dash $1 Chinese take-out spot; although take-out is never a bad idea either. Try the Plum Tree Beef or Plum Tree Deluxe. The Sweet and Pungent Shrimp is outstanding as well as the Crispy Duck.

This restaurant was recommended by a native Los Angeles friend who grew up having special family dinners here as a child. It didn't disappoint.

Apparently this is a new location but very little has changed about the place. The decor is a mix of Asian lines and elegance and 80s pastels. There's a wonderful wire sculpture of a dragon hanging from the ceiling and various art pieces on the walls. One Beatles print is kind of anachronistic, but it works.

The cocktails are large and perfect. And the food was amazing. My favorite was the Sauteed Shrimp. Somehow these shrimp just about liquefy into something creamy when bitten into.  I also recommend the Three Flavor Sizzling Rice Soup, the Spicy Fried Prawns, the Orange Chicken, and the Beef With Chinese Peas. Our party ate every bit of the food we were brought. It was all perfectly done.

Service here was also prompt and generous. A vegetable dish was brought to our table by mistake and the server was so apologetic they offered it to us anyway. We said no, give it to the people that actually ordered it. Maybe next time - and I do plan to go back - I'll order it myself.

Plum Tree Inn has become one of the family favorites when it comes to Chinatown cuisine, especially when it comes to my dad's side of the family. This is actually a great place. I think they have some awesome house-special chow mein. We usually get take-out from here too (like the other night) The most common ordered favorites include: Yang Chow Fried Rice, Orange Chicken, Crispy Beef, Walnut Shrimp, & the House Pan Fried Noodles.

Come check it out!

I am kind of weary of the Valet service. I brought my car here which is a 5-sp manual, and the guy didn't drive it very well. :P

The food was 3.5, but the decor and staff got me to round up.

My friends live in Silverlake and Sunday evening Chinese food has become an infrequent, but regular event. He loves Yang Chow. She loves sizzling rice soup (without mushrooms.)

Tonight, he wanted to try somewhere else. I thought of Sam Woos as I wanted to try the LA one to compare to the Las Vegas joint I've tried. But,  my back-up was Plum Tree Inn as I read about it here on Yelp. He also was told about this place so we got here after the Sunday rush.

The waiter was friendly and the place was fairly empty so we got the choice of booths. We ordered the soup and some healthy options (i don't remember what :) ) although we were tempted by the deep fried fish too. All was pretty competent, but not like a trip to San Gabriel or even across the street to Empress Pavillion, but this is a restaurant that accommodates the nearby business diners (you have to ask for chopsticks) and those who want more comfortable surroundings than the bustle and cramp in other spots in Chinatown. I'll probably come back.

When I was a kid, Plum Tree Inn was a special restaurant we'd go to on occasion.  I remember the food was really great.  And I want to say fairly high end with great service.

I took the boy here for his birthday last Friday.  I had been meaning to check out the new location and to see if it was as good as I remembered it to be.

Well, the service was exceptionally great.  However, I thought the food was just fine.  The boy chose the sizzling rice soup and beef with soft noodles.  I snuck in some veggies with a chicken and broccoli dish. We shared it all family style and had a ton of leftovers. We liked it all but I think I would have liked it even better if there weren't loud parties there.

One of the private rooms had constant laughter coming in every ten minutes or so.  It was like there was a roller coaster in there.  And the group of four women sitting near us were having a loud ladies night out or something because they kept cackling hysterically.

But we tried out best to ignore them and enjoy our meal in a decidely bright atmosphere.  Hmm, I'd like to turn down the lights about five notches to get it vaguely near "romantic mood lighting."

Ah well, it was still fun.

I hadn't been to Plum Tree Inn since I was in college - it was actually the first Chinese restaurant I ever tried! (Yeah, I grew up in Indiana, deal with it.)

I had the chance to go back this past Monday with my friend Mike to see if it was as good as I remembered. The restaurant has moved and the new locaiton is spacious and airy. It has a really cool wire frame dragon suspended from the ceiling. I imagine it lights up at night, but I was there at lunch, so I'm just guessing. It would be really cool if it spewed fire too, but that's probably too much to ask.

Our waiter, Remy, was an adorable older man who was completely charming. Mike and I ordered the Sweet and Pungent Chicken and the Hot Spicy Eggplant, both sans onions. (I love anyone willing to forgo onions for me. *swoon*) I'm not sure what was pungent about the chicken, though it was breaded and fried and rolled in sauce to within an inch of its life (or death, as the case may be.) It was sort of like sweet and sour chicken but crispier, if that makes sense. Tasty, but probably the most artery-clogging item on the menu. The eggplant was FANTASTIC, but I love me some eggplant, so I could be biased.

The lunch came with complimentary ice cream at the end (!!!) - I picked plum and Mike got the lychee. Both were delicious! I've only tasted one lychee product before, and I don't think it was a good representation, because this ice cream tasted like a melon made love to a lemon. Oh, so yummy...*licking lips*

Plus, 10 minutes away from my office = my new favorite place for lunch.

It would seriously take a lot to get me to try a new restaurant ON Broadway in Chinatown that's not named Sam Woo BBQ. There is a 99 percentage rate that it is a waste of time, taste and a happy tummy.

So what was it that got me in the door? It was my friend Benny, who is a guitarist extraordinaire, who can cover Beach Boys and the Beatles like no other (amongst other things), and his original stuff is just wow. He was (at my first visit) playing at the Inn (which, by the way, is in fact, not an inn but a restaurant) 4 nights a week, and I figured, well, he's playing down the street from me, and I should be a good friend, I'll check this place out.

I don't know,  maybe it's the name that makes me think of that sauce that some people looooooooove but I seem to utterly dispise...so imagine my surprise that Plum Tree Inn is part of that 1 percentile that actually proved me otherwise...the food is actually good here! Dishes are decently priced, you're sure to find a dish that would please everyone.

As expected, dishes are served family style, but if you prefer to have several dishes with a smaller party, they have two options of pre fixe menu that seems to have a selection of their more popular and tasty dishes. My favorite dish by far isn't on the menu. I'm not certain on the name, but I think it's Schwezwan pork with honey and sesame seeds. I don't think I can appropriately describe this dish so I'll just say it's amazing. Their soups are also tasty. Service is very friendly and prompt as well, which I cannot say for the service at Sam Woo...it's a pleasant change, I have to say.

Forget that you have some hippie looking guy at the front of the dining area playing rock and roll in a Chinese restaurant with an amazing wire dragon all along the ceiling and the previously mentioned Beatles posters hanging opposite the "cool" Chinese symbols people loved getting as tattoos in the late 90's. Do take note this place has a full bar. One may come here for the live entertainment, but you'd definitely stay and come again for the good food.

I was looking for a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown for Christmas dinner with my boyfriend and his Chinese mother and uncle. On the basis of its Yelp reviews, I chose the Plum Tree Inn.

Alas, I realized my error as soon as we walked in. The place was full of white people and very few Asians. Clearly, this is a place geared more towards tourists than local Chinese.

The decor leaves much to be desired. Painted in colors reminiscent of McDonald's (orange and yellow), the dining room is decorated with a random selection of "artwork" including a giant wire sculpture of a dragon hanging from the ceiling, some ugly abstract paintings and an inexplicable Beatles poster.

Service was attentive and the food was decent. The one exception being the Peking duck, which was EXCELLENT. Perhaps the best Peking duck I've ever had. The skin was crisp, the meat tender and moist, and it was not fatty at all. Our waiter prepared it at the table, carefully compiling each little bundle of thin pancake, sliced duck, green onions and hoisin sauce.

My boyfriend's mom said that one of the reasons there were no Chinese there was that the prices are too high. So it's a bit pricey for the neighborhood. If you go, go for the Peking duck, which has to be ordered 24 hours in advance.

I can't believe I've worked downtown for 11 years now and hadn't been to Plum Tree.  I'm not sure I'd go for lunch, I can imagine how crowded it gets. But an early dinner was a cinch.

We had some crab and corn soup to start where the crab was so fresh, it almost pinched my ass.  We also had mushu pork that was excellent and these killer lemon scallops that were huge and perfectly cooked.  After we walked over to a chinese bakery and finished off with an egg tart and mango cake.

It was one of those evenings where living in LA was getting me down, really bad traffic, no parking etc but after dinner there and dessert at the bakery in chinatown, it make me remember that one of the things I love about LA is the diversity (the hispanic woman working the counter at the Chinese Bakery really nailed it).

Hmm Hmm good!
So sick of turkey, ham, mac and cheese, and other holiday food, i opted for Chinese food. I was so inspired by this place that I'm not making traditional holiday food for Christmas...I'm bringing (...drumroll) Fried Rice!
This food is awesome, and if you're craving good food at night after a night out or good sex, this is one of the places to go.
Their house special fried rice has bbq pork, chicken, shrimp, and beef. It tasty. Good to my lingua (tongue)
Just like most of the restaurants in downtown....it's pretty good. Ging there after I type this review. Care to join me?

I think what I like most about Plum Tree Inn is the random framed Beatles poster amid all the other typical Chinese decorations.  Oh, and it's also the best Chinese food I've had in this town.  Maybe you are like I used to be, that is to say disappointed by the fact that there was absolutely no acceptable Chinese food anywhere to be found in Los Angeles.  Once I discovered Plum Tree Inn (thanks, boyfriend), the sun was shining, the birds were singing, etc etc.

Everything I've had here has been top notch and I am certain that if you try it, you will agree.

This location is apparently relatively new - there is a bar in the front, several private rooms, and most of the dining room was made up of booths. I can't say I was overly impressed with the atmosphere but it was ok.

The food was good and in typical Chinese fashion, way too much food was served. We ended up taking 1/2 of it home. The food was tasty for Chinese but I'm not sure I'd go back. Maybe it's me that really doesn't like the overly greasy food, I don't know. I hit up a Chinese place in SF last yr and that is what I compare all Chinese food to.

Between the atmosphere and the good (but not excellent) food, it gets three stars!

The five stars are for the food.  Best Chinese food i've ever had, pretty much hands down.

I came here on a Friday evening for a business meeting/dinner with friends.  Our friend Benny was singing acoustic cover songs in the main dining room by the Beatles, Elton John and the like.

Our food came out...
A plate of perfectly cooked and seasoned spinach.
A plate of plump and delicious shrimp with green onions.
A plate of tender yet crisp snow peas.
A bowl of perfectly steamed white rice.
A plate of chicken and noodles
A plate of beef with vegetables and noodles

i feel like i'm missing something.  But it doesn't matter.  Everything that i had was amazing!  I'm a pescetarian so i didn't try the beef or chicken dishes, but there were some scallops hangin out on the chicken plate and i kept stealing some because the scallops were so amazing.  I suggest get anything with scallops in it when you go :-)

All the vegetables were perfectly prepared and such simple and healthy dishes all around.
The ambiance was pretty neutral, probably best for large parties or casual meetings. Check out the original artist pieces like the wire-framed dragon on the ceiling and the modern paper pieces on the large dining room walls.

Located right off the 110 fwy, they offer valet parking and there is $5 parking across the street.  Few street spaces as well, so plan to either take a mini-hike or take a mini-dip into your wallet.

Overall, i think if you're interested in good, well-priced Chinese food (and even Chinese beer),  great Chinatown location, and a casual and relaxed environment, go to the Plum Tree Inn.  You'll have a great time and leave stuffed and happy.

Out of all the Chinese eateries I've been to, Plum Tree is one of the best! I usually start off with the Wonton soup with a dollop of their signature chili sauce. I always end up asking more for their chili sauce.
Also, the braised string beans has enough flavoring of garlic, ginger, green onion and soy sauce. Their sizzling scallops are to die for!

The waiters are very accommodating, but check your bill before you leave. I split the bill with a friend and they charged it twice to my card.

THE BEST CHINESE FOOD I'm serious...I don't mess around when it comes to food. They moved from Hill stree to Broadway...bigger location...nicer and cooler. I order from here when I have my board meetings and my providers love it!!!
It's really good!
I took my mom and she loves it... hmmmm yummy! I'm hungry!
For lunch it usually get's busy and for dinner too. Make sure for lunch you get there at like 11:30am and for Dinner around 4pm...if you wait till later it gets crowded...
The parking is in the back...but you might have to park across the street. They do deliver but only if your close and if you order over $100.00. =)
Enjoy! I did!

so i went yesterday hoping to get an extremely delicious meal but i came out disappointed. the noodes are the best i have ever eaten in LA but the res t of the food was just ok.  there is nothing to really rave about because im sure that i can go to the place that they filmed jackie chan and get a way better offer for the same food because the plum tree was extremely expensive. i felt i got ripped off and i didnt even pay but i would go back if it was a special occasion or something because its a fairly decnt restaurant with a randomly placed beatles poster.

Good food that is less authentically Chinese and more palatably American (though i would never go so far to compare it to any take out chinese/american dive).

One "rave," though, is for their Peking Duck, which you must order at least 24 hours in advance.  Call the day before, get the duck, which (standard) comes with 1)soft, steamed, white buns 2)sweet, yet savory plum sauce and 3)sliced, long scallions.  It is the perfect flavor AND texture combination.

My wife and I were craving some chinese food so we headed for Chinatown. I'd been to this place when it was a couple blocks over and always remembered it so I thought it was time to try it at the new location. We ordered way too much food. Seafood and veggies, chicken moo goo (they assemble them at your table) and steamed spinach. That doesn't seem like a lot but it was. Good as well.

It didn't hurt that my friend Twen, the architect who designed this place, invited us here for dinner one night, or that my friend Benny was performing exquisite Beatles and Kinks covers on his acoustic guitar that recent Friday night, but I had a really good time here and I can say suretly that this is a great place to help you discover China Town!

I'm told the busy hours are lunchtime when there is a line of businessmen out the door daily, so use this to your advantage and eat here at night when you can get a table in the smartly decorated Chinese family restaurant. (skip the valet and pay the $5 parking directly across the street).

Why?

Because they have some of the best Chinese food you'll ever taste.

Simple dishes often having only one main ingredient like spinach that you will only appreciate when they touch your tounge and speak to you and tell you "more isn't always better".

You will leave downtown Los Angeles happy, and in the back of your mind you mind respond to the spinach, "you know, I think you're right simple is often better".

This place is great.  It is a little dark inside, but it's clean, and the food is excellent.  I came here with a large group of family and friends, several of whom are picky eaters, and everybody at the table enjoyed the meal.  Between the 12 or so of us we probably sampled over half the menu, and I don't think there was anything anyone didn't like.  Parking is a pain in the butt, though, so if you decide to come here, come a little early to give yourself time to circle around and find a spot.

Yeah, I totally eat Americanized Chinese food - and there's nothing I like more than than the sauteed shrimp at the Plum Tree Inn. I've been getting it since I was in my early teens. The taste is mild but not bland, the portion is generous, and you can knock back the whole plate without realizing you left nothing for those eating with you. Everything else is fine too. The soups are consistently good.

The new place is a little less 80's, its got a neato dragon hanging from the ceiling, but thats about it.  Other than that, its the exact same joint, just a hop skip and a jump away from the old location. Safe, easy, risk-free Chinese food when you aren't up to the challenge of authenticity.

I can't really described this place very well. It was one of those excursions that I went with my ex-boss to find a good Chinese restaurant in old Chinatown. He always wants to go Sam Woo or Hop Woo (the worst part is that he gets them mixed up since both are on the same street) and I rather pick Foo Chow. One day he convinced me to take a chance on this place because it's a couple of doors down from Foo Chow.

When I walked in, the place was sort of dingy and a little dark. Hey, it would be great for romantic settings, but I came along with my boss.  I could tell that this was going to be a mismatched setting. It seemed like there's going to be couples all around us. We would never have to worry about the wait because most of the time we came in after 8pm weekdays, so it's pretty much deserted during the non-tourist weekends.

The food was not memorable or I would have given suggestions on what their specialty or the best dishes was. But my guess is that a cool place for nice dinner in a dark cozy place. Or they need more light in that place, not quite sure exactly. My best guess is that this Chinese cuisine restaurant was catered to western tastes and people looking for a nice quiet dinner.

In a couple of reviews I read was that it put in Kung Pao Chicken and Peking Duck as their main featured item. Boy, you know this is not a Chinese restaurant for Chinese if those two items are your big attractions.

Great large family place for lunch or dinner. Located right off the 110 fwy in Old Chinatown. After a night of partying in the area, I discovered it's open late night and no surprise it's just as full as it is on sunday during lunch. Just packed. The food is two notch above average Chinese food.

This the the best asian/Chinese food Ive had from the area.  The service is always great and the food comes to your table quicky.  The grean beans and the sweet & pungent chicken are awesome- as are the lemon scallops.  Everything Ive had there has been good and whats great is that each dish has its own distinct flavor - and they dont get muddled together like they do in other restaurants.  We have taken my office to lunch there many times.  Parking can be a little tricky - but they do validate with the valet service next door.

I'm not so glad we found this place again.  I remember going to the Plum Tree when it was on Hill Ave (St.?) instead of its current location on Broadway.  It was just what I pictured a "real" Chinese restaurant in Chinatown was like--round tables with lazy Susans, etc.  I remember the food being yummy.  We had ordered lots of it and had some cold Tsing-Taos.  It helped that I worked within walking distance of it which is why we ended up there for a late lunch that day.

Three years later, we found ourselves in the same vicinity yesterday and I suggested that to my friends I had in tow.  After walking up and down Hill, I decided to stop and ask and was informed that it had moved to Broadway.  No problem.  We'll cross through the main Chinatown plaza and head on over.

Sometimes I think that restaurants make bad decisions when they try to make their places better.  Newer tables...er booths, new decor, a bigger bar, fancy modern Chinese decor, etc. was not what I remember the Plum Tree Inn to be like.  Nonetheless, we decided to sit and order some lunch.  I knew it had changed when we asked for Chinese Broccoli w/ Oyster Sauce (a Chinese restaurant standard) and our server told us that they don't do chinese broccoli, rather "American broccoli" (is broccoli really American?).  Fine.  We'll have that.  I also ordered some moo shu chicken.  That was just okay. Some Wor Wonton.  Meh.  Chao Siu, sans Bao, and it was just standard.  Pretty much, my Tsing-Tao was the best thing I ordered. No chopsticks were provided, just forks and I enjoy my chinese with a good ol' pair of splintered sticks, so we all asked for a pair.  Yeah, no authentic Chinese food-lovers really come to the Plum Tree, anyway, so why put out chopsticks.  Makes sense.

Needless to say, I was saddened that the Plum Tree's new look and move effected its food quality.  Oh, the days of yesteryear.

Love it! Looks like a classic red-boothed cliche from way back. But it's new. And the booths I think are orange. Even better, the place is large but not cavernous; and friendly w/o patronizing; and even mo better: The Food Rocks. Been there once for dinner with small kids, and they handled our partay as good as anyone. Been there once for lunch with a bud, and that hit the spot. Lunch specials are tasty, and get you out pretty cheap. Dinner we had a bunch of stuff: The corn soup, sooo good, and I'm not even a fan of that. The classic cken lo mein or whatever it's called worked just fine. Man, what else? Uh, OH, the SCALLOPS! Get Them Now! Big and bulbous, yet didn't taste of growth hormone ;). Can't describe em other than YUM. They have a bar, too, and we had some decent dry white wine. I'm forgetting dessert, but you shouldn/t, cause whatever we had, was great. Might have been a pudding. or maybe ice cream. I'm foggy. It's late. Pls forgive. But go!
