It's true. Bill and John are very knowledgeable and nice guys. Going in, I had some preconceived notions about what I ought to restring my racquet with. Trying to get more spin and pop than my previous string, but wanted to be absolutely sure it was arm friendly. They gave me all the information I needed to make my choice, and within a matter of hours, I had my Babolat restrung with a less expensive string than I had originally thought I needed to buy.
I just came back from the courts, and the string had exactly the properties they described. In one afternoon, they've revived my tennis "career"!
Have been going here for a few years. They use to be located on Solano Avenue just a couple blocks or so above San Pablo Avenue. With this new location you're close to the overhead BART tracks.
Anyway you can't go wrong here. Bill and John will offer you excellent service for your tennis needs. They are a wealth of information. The new location is an improvement over the last location in size and variety of goods they offer. Not fancy inside but service more than makes up for it. I've found that the stringing they do is excellent. My strings seem to last lot longer than other people that have it strung elsewhere.
Went here the other day in search of a tennis racquet. It's a little store on the corner in El Cerrito. Doesn't have dirt cheap prices like your Sports Authority but if you want some advice on a racquet the both the guys there are very knowledgeable and friendly, with no-pressure sales tactic. You can rent the racquet's before you buy and the rental cost can be applied to a new racquet if you purchase it there.
The guy who owned it for years and still works there is Bill Strei. He just sold it to an employee, I think. Anyway, Bill is a minor deity amongst bay area tennis people since he won the Oakland City championships twice back in the '50's. He's in his 70's now and still plays every day. An inspiration to us all.
Whenever anyone asks me where to get their racquet restrung or where to get demos or new shoes, I send them to Bill at Plaza Tennis. If you're looking for cute tennis outfits, then head to the Adidas outlet or Sports Authority but for tennis enthusiasts, Plaza Tennis is the place to go for equipment!
