Why pay $10 for a funnel cake when you can get away from tourists and inhale some spicy pork awesomeness for so much cheaper? At Dona Zita's, tacos are $3 and tortas (toasted sandwiches) are $8. The menu is simple but has chicken, pork, veggies, beef, and chorizo. They also have Jarritos and agua fresca. Perry got a sampling of different tacos while i opted for the larger enchilada torta. It was as big as my head! The meal was big on quantity, but I did feel that the meat could have been jucier. I'll totally be back when I'm in the neighborhood, simply because its a great cheap eat. Keep it up guys!

I love real Mexican food and this place, although not trendy is fantastic.  The chicken tacos were to die for and the chicken torta was out of this world, over the top, stuffed with jalapenos, fresh cheese and pulled chicken as well as avocados.  The perfectly toasted bread finishes off a sandwich to rival any made in the streets of Mexico City.  Definitely the place to eat when on a Coney Island random adventure in the rain.

I moved back to NYC from being in California for the last couple of years and knew I would have trouble finding decent Mexican food again.

Unfortunately for me, that one place is in Coney Island... the absolute, absolute opposite side of the city from the northernmost part of the Bronx.

They are, in fact, worth a 2 hour subway ride.  And that 2 hours... is only ONE WAY.

I've done the 4-hour trip.  Believe it.  They are the real deal.

I could take one star off because sometimes, the wait is effing long, there's no place to sit, the pork is a bit too salty, and people that go there are mad ghetto.  But if you're patient, the price is right and the product is tasty as helllllllll.

Really just average tacos. The ones that used to be around the corner were amazing and gave you a fantastic charred scallion as a garnish. Dona Zita has awnings and a bathroom, which i guess are improvements but the tacos are really just OK. The steak in the steak tacos is some crappy faux steak like you'd find at a chain restaurant. The chorizo, fried pork, and chicken tacos were good but not great.

The pork taco was salty and dry. The beef taco was tasty & fresh, but a bit salty. And, the chicken taco?, the chicken taco was fabulous!

They have their chicken meat served up pulled-chicken style, so it comes dressed with a tasty sauce. Then when you ply on the fresh chunky salsa, and their house sauce, it turns into one of the best chicken tacos I've had.

Normally, I prefer hard taco shells. However, this place can convert me with their dual soft shells per taco. The second shell is useful too; it catches the grease that seeps past the first shell.

Their location right off the Coney Island boardwalk couldn't be better. Grab a plate of fresh tacos, and enjoy them while soaking in some sun on the beach, and listening to the breaking waves.

Don't let the ghetto carnie atmosphere fool you, this is arguably the best taco you could get in the area (and quite possibly all of NY). Dona Zita's tacos are served on a paper plate and piled with porkey goodness, then topped with fresh salsa, cilantro, lettuce, and grilled onions. After receiving this heaping pile of love, you have the option to douse it with homemade hot sauce, guac, and sour cream. I recommend you stay away from the Ragu-sauce slathered Pollo, and go for the Spicy Pork, Chorizo, or Carnitas.

Skip past Nathan's  (which will likely be swarmed with tourists) and save some money- these $3 tacos are enough to make Anthony Bourdain cream himself.  After day-drinking Russian beers on the beach, this is the place you should stumble on your way back to the Stillwell Ave. stop. Don't forget about the 12oz Mexican Coke (READ: real sugar) bottles either!

In the backround, one hears the terrible pop-rap/R&B blasting "Ay Bay Bay" from the spinny ride. Dona Zita's also has a lovely view of a mostly abandoned lot and the top right corner of the Wonder Wheel... this place is practically IN Dino's. Every time someone visits Coney Island I take them here, and every time my guests are blown away. If you're not convinced, check out some of the pictures!

They've raised the price of the tacos to $3 (as of July 2009), which is a little steep, but they were so good I didn't care. I agree with Tony C. that the chicken was amazing. I also got tacos with enchilada (spicy pork) and chorizo. They weren't  quite as good as the chicken but still pretty great. Good horchata too. Definitely check this place out.

    Update:

I went to Coney Island on a lark yesterday so I stopped in . The chicken was as good as ever but the enchilada may have been even better.

This is the best Mexican I have had in New York City. I know you find this disarming, friends, but I am from California and so you must heed my words. And whenever I'm home in San Francisco, say ensconced on a bench at the fabulous Taqueria Vallarta, the most immediate thing I realize I've missed is the vibrancy of the ingredients. Bright flavors come from fresh vegetables and Doña Zita is an oasis of thoughtful flavor in this desert of Mexican food that is Our Fair City.

Other pluses: this being Coney Island, the prices are rock bottom: two dollars for the pictured (massive) tacos. Place your order and she grills up the onions for you straight away, along with some meat, and then you dress with limitless supplies of pico de gallo and a few salsas yourself. It looks as if she uses a second griddle for vegetarians! Doña Zita and the others are kind and charming.

I know you love your Red Hook truck or your hole-in-the-wall Jackson Heights secret, but I put forward Doña as a worthy rival. With her own permanent stand, she bests the trucks, and with the sunlight shining through her umbrellas, somehow the food shines so much more brightly than in the Heights.

My bestie and I snacked there (two tacos per), rode the Cyclone and wandered the beach, and came back for two more. You have got to check this place out.

I love the tacos!!!  These are the best tacos I've ever had.  They remind me of the street vendor tacos in Boise, ID.  I enjoy every aspect of their tacos (I get the steak) including the shredded fresh cilantro.  Fresh, fast (once you place your order) and fab!  Wish I could go there more often.

unlike the other reviews above, i tried the chicken taco and it was bland bland bland.  luckily it was doused in salsa and pico de gallo, but still, bland.  dona zita's saving grace was the chorizo taco, which was awesome and probably the biggest serving of chorizo i've ever seen in a taco.

2 stars for the chicken taco, 5 stars for the chorizo taco, and 4 stars for the price...  will definitely return and try the other meats next time i'm at coney island.

Delish. Like Steve M., I'm from California, too and i thought these tacos were great! They aren't healthy or fancy, but just the good old grease and corn tortilla style you grew up with eating in abuela's kitchen or in East LA. Stick to the carnitas tacos, I say. But they do make a chorizo taco and a tostada that comes with cotija and Oaxaca cheeses - yum, if you like that stuff. Don't go there if you're vegetarian or even if you're mostly used to chain Mexican food - this isn't Baja Fresh. This is comfort food and I might find myself here whenever the California dreamin' won't let me go.

On the boardwalk @ Coney island, you find this small spot, seemed cleaned to me so I gave it a try. I ordered tostadas de pollo ( Chicken tostadas) and good thing I ordered just one because the serving is huge!!!! it was so fresh and flavorful. Definitely coming back on my next time to NY =)

I had the chicken tacos and I thought it was just ok. I have had much better tacos on Staten Island. Granted it was at 11pm but I don't think it mattered that much. The green hot sauce was pretty good though. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again but if I was in Coney Island again late at night this place would be an option I suppose.
