10 reviews for Play Hair Lounge
After finishing my contract with the Marine Corps and moving to SoCal, I decided I'd had enough of my regulation high-and-tight haircut and wanted to grow out my hair like all those keen hipsters I kept hearing about.
Finding a new stylist after moving is always a traumatic experience for me because of all the potential for error, and I was doubly nervous because I was also vying for a new hairstyle and length. Play was a bit expensive for me coming from my excellent barber in Manhattan, but I was willing to absorb the costs if it meant I wouldn't end up in the parking lot crying at my dashboard.
The salon itself is very chic, with very trendy designs, current fashion magazines and the always great Bumble & Bumble products. My mother, who in my youth styled hair to ensure food was on the table every night, always told me to judge a stylist by her own hairstyle. It needs to be trendy, because the stylist in question should be bored to death with the "standards" by the point in her career where she can't remember her cosmetology school schedule. My mom would be very pleased with the trendy cuts and colors I saw on the hairstylists at Play (and some of their patrons!)
I am the eternal walk-in, and I lucked out with Brit, who happened to be available when I stumbled in. She directed me to the personal cup coffee machine in the back (a fresh cup each time and they stocked several flavors for me, which saved on my planned Starbucks return trip; that's like five dollars off already!) After drinking my coffee and browsing through an issue of the ever-nostalgic W magazine (are my youthful memories fucked up or what? Thanks, mom,) I sat down for my cut. The cut itself was $25, but men's cuts range from $25 to $35 depending on your stylist. Tip amply.
Simi Valley isn't known for its scene, so it was odd to have gotten such a great cut and styling tips in the family values district of SoCal, but it worked for me. I've recommended Brit to a female friend of mine who also takes her daughter to Play, and she is a sworn convert. I've tried other salons in the area when I've needed a desperate cut and Brit was booked, and I've always left regretting not just scheduling with her like I should have and dealing with my unkempt hair until then.
Take this from a man with very high standards ingrained in him from a young age, you will not be disappointed with Play Hair Lounge, even if your wallet is a little lighter by the end of it. But hey, it's a recession; if we can't treat ourselves to at least some of the finer things now and then, what's the point of living? I say no matter how much your portfolio's losing on the Street, there's no excuse for not looking like a million bucks.
I went to the same salon whenever I came home to Cali but when my last haircut was done by a vapid 18 year old high school dropout who effed up my haircolor, I realized I had to make a switch.
The location and place itself isn't glamorous, but that's Simi for you. I walked in and was greeted by the receptionist who was sooperdooper dripping sweet. She gave me a tour of the place and showed me the FREE beverages! I know some salons offer tea or wine, but it's nice to have a fridge stocked with sodas and water bottles.
My stylist Carissa and I spent 10 minutes talking about what I wanted. Then purrrr the hair wash scalp massage was so soothing! Massages give me the heebeegeebees and goosebumps but this one turned me into a wet noodle. I used to be nonchalant about my hair but ever since I was given a mullet in my college years I'm prone to being tense in a hairstylist's chair. Carissa had me as serene as a frog on a lillypad.
Intially I wanted blunt bangs but was afraid it'd make me look 5 years old. So first she cut in long sweepy bangs until I asked her to cut off more.. and a little more.. and finally, 'Eff it! Let's just get em done!'. She was totally chipper and didn't blink an eye when my hair ocd came out in full force.
My hair is much lighter now and Carissa didn't even cut off a lot, just reshaped it. (There's a huge conspiracy against me. Everytime I ask for a certain amount to be cut off it ends up being 4 times that.) Finally a hairdresser who knows what I mean when I say 'I'm trying to grow it out'. I'm not sure if I'm feeling the layers in the back because they don't blend well, but other than that the haircut's great.
$45 cut and complimentary bang trims along with free Bumble and Bumble samples! And the girls here are so sweet it'll give you diabetes and make you feel like a bad person for not smiling.
I needed hair help... desperately!! I decided to go to Play Hair Lounge after reading all the wonderful reviews here on yelp. Hesitant at first, because I live in Los Angeles, I decided to make the drive. I seriously could not be happier!! Owner/Stylist, Brig, did my hair. I sat down in her chair and told her to do whatever she wanted, as long as she kept the length. After talking to me for a little bit and getting to know my style, she started cutting away. I walked out of there feeling like a million bucks! She rocked my hair out like no other!! I haven't been this happy with a hair cut in so long, I can't even remember!
Not only was she a rock star at cutting my hair, but the lady really knows her stuff. She suggested that I get a water filter for my shower, saying that I had a lot of hard water build up on my hair. I made the purchase, and it has been a couple months now, and my hair is softer and shinier than ever!! Beautiful!! (She also has a website where she gives hair tips called http://brigknowsbest.com)
The salon is super cool, everyone is really nice, it's seriously a diamond in the rough. I would highly suggest P!ay Hair Lounge for anyone!
Thank you fellow Yelpers! After living in Simi Valley for four years, I grew tired of heading over the hill and across the valley to get my haircut in Sherman Oaks. I had given one of the salons in Simi Valley a shot when I first moved here, but was very disappointed with the cut, the atmosphere and the price.
So I decided to use yelp to figure out where I should be going, and the top of the list was this salon.
The most impressive part of my experience at P!ay Hair Lounge was that I got a call back from the salon from somebody who asked me questions about my hair. They wanted to pair me up with the stylist that would be best suited for what I wanted to do. No other salon I have been to has ever taken the time to figure that out. They usually just give you an appointment with the first stylist that has an open slot on the schedule.
I ended up seeing Delia, who was so sweet to stay late for me since my schedule was a bit tight that week. She did a great job, and even showed me what to DO with my hair so I could make it look like she made it look when I walked out of the salon. Loved the ambiance, loved the products and LOVED the price.
I have already recommended this salon to my sister-in-law, who had her first appointment with Delia last week and was very, very happy.
So, thanks again yelpers! I no longer have to travel forty minutes and through traffic to get my hair cut! Now I can practically WALK to my appointments!
Play Hair Lounge is a treasure in Simi Valley. It's that hair salon that I've always longed to find; and I am thankful that I finally did. If only it were around when I wanted to look like Angela Chase from My So Called Life. HA!
Play has a stylist for everyone from punky to chic. Brig does my hair and she always does a great job. You can tell that she has a lot of expertise and knowledge not only as a hair stylist, but also as a business owner. Her salon is funky, fun, creative, and friendly. I love that not only is she up to date with new looks and techniques, but is constantly making an effort to learn the most up to date styles. That makes her a fabulous hair dresser and owner. I am always confident that she can make me look good even if I'm not completely sure what sort of hair style I want. Finally, a hair dresser who can give me expert advice on what would look good on me!
So I needed to get my hair cut for the first time in well over a year. New to the area, I decided to checked out my options here on Yelp first. I was immediately drawn to this salon and all of the good reviews. I checked out their website and decided to just go for it. When I called I was hoping they would be able to squeeze me in this week. I had tried to trim my own hair and I realized that I just needed to get it fixed. Not only did they accomodate me, they got me in that very evening....lastnight. I also have curly hair so I needed someone that was experienced and knowledgable about cutting cury hair.
My appointment was for 6pm ( they are open till 8pm!) As soon as I walked in the door, I was immediately greeted with a smile and a friendly tour. The interior was funky with an industrial artsy feel.
I was then introduced to Carissa my hair "surgeon". Sweet girl with an awesome hair style and color job. She made me feel at ease as we talked about my hair. She explained what she wanted to do, that would work best for me and my hair. She used the hair cutting technique for curly hair that I only read about but never had done. She described each product and what it does as she put it on me. The whole process was quick and efficient. I left with samples and no pressure to buy the products. THANK YOU!
Nikki Skaggs saved me and my hair when I thought all hope was lost. I had been going to another hair stylist for 6 years and it ended with a bad experience. Nikki had a huge job ahead of her when I first came to her, but she was so patient and never made me feel hopeless. My hair is awesome now and I get compliments all the time and everytime I gosta give props to my girl Nikki at P!AY!
The place itself is hip and artistic inspired. I want to stay in the bathroom forever, it's so cool! Even if you don't have to go to the bathroom you should make a special trip and visit it! Everyone is so friendly, you feel like they are all old time buddies. They also showcase artists, not just the painting kind, but jewelry makers etc. Whatever you can imagine, the P!AY girls can definately make it come to life. Don't go to the cookie cutter hair places, come to P!AY and be unique!
I also love their Bumble & Bumble products, they come in all sizes from travel to costco size that lasts 6 months or more! It's a really good investment to buy the huge size. Okay, I think I'd better stop, just come to P!AY and see why we can't shut up about this place!!
My dull lifeless hair made the most miraculous transformation on my first visit with Brig Van Osten over three years ago. My once over processed hair, has now seen all lengths (from short to long) and a spectrum of colors (from plum to highlights) under Brig's genius. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area and as a frequent traveler, I have been to salons here in the Bay and in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Los Angeles; and the Inland Empire. However, the only place that I will continue to return to is P!ay for its great hospitality and unparalleled hair expertise. I have come to Brig without a clue and occasionally with a diagram--but no matter what my level of certainty about my hair--she has known exactly what to do to get my hair from blase to beautiful.
In case she may seem familiar, Brig's been featured in Redbook magazine and as an oh-so-talented stylist for the television show, 'What not to Wear' as an aide to the fashionably challenged. Her technique is divine and her honesty is refreshing.
Now, as the owner of the Play Hair Lounge, Brig and her amazing team of talented stylists are bringing Hollywood posh to the Simi Valley suburbs. A super stylish salon makes a seemingly routine hair appointment transform into a luxe lounging experience. Get there a little early before your appointment and enjoy free beverages and a stellar magazine selection that rivals a Parisian newsstand. This coupled with cushy bright red salon chairs and avant-garde artwork make P!ay the stairway to hair heaven.
What a releif from the ordinary of suburbia. Brig and her crew have really createda shining jewel in a sea of generic shopping center blandness. The salon and everyone working there are full of character and they don't care if you are a career professional or a groupie. Just come in and enjoy. Everyone is super friendly and they all get along really well. We have followed Tara around from salon to salon and its great to see this as her home. Our whole family goes there and we will continue to go and recommend all our friends.
I have been going to Brig loyally now for a little over 6 years. And when I say loyally I mean even after I moved up to Northern California I have been known to let my roots grow out to 6-7 inches (ie: 6-7 month after my last visit) because I can't bring myself to go to anyone else! This might seem crazy to some, but to me it totally makes sense. Brig has taken my hair through all sorts of adventures, long and blond with blunt fringe, medium length and auburn, layered and strawberry blond, super short and messy, and now super blond and very layered and long. From the first time I met her at an L.A. hair show it was very evident to how passionate and knowledgeable she was with hair. Her talent shined in the way she could whip my long hair up in an amazing up-do, all while explaining what she was doing to an audience in less than 10 minutes... maybe even 5. She knows hair inside and out and gets to know her clients even better. It is important to her that you look your best so she won't be one to try out new techniques on you just for the sake of it. She will get to know your personality and will work with you to make you look and feel your best. Whether you are a person who has found their perfect cut or someone like me who likes to be a bit more of a chameleon with their hair do, Brig will make you feel amazing. I have seen Brig through her travels of many different salons and am so excited for her that she has her own place. It is a wonderful creation of her imagination which brings the salon experience to a whole new level. And her choice to become a B&B exclusive salon gives her access to constant training and new products. Brig is a super star - now its your turn to go and P!ay !
